Overlooked public land (the woods people skip)
Famous forests eat opening weekend. These pages are the next drainage over — still public, still legal, usually fewer taillights at the lot.

How to pick a trip without lying to yourself
If you have one week and a nonresident tag, do not start with the forest that has a magazine cover. Start with whether you can buy the tag over the counter. That answer is on the license how-to for that state, then on the state guide for dates.
Then pick the kind of woods:
- Big timber, swamp, lake-effect — Ottawa / Chequamegon / UP.
- Plateau hardwoods and hunter roads — Allegheny, PA state forest.
- Hills, benches, long seasons — Daniel Boone, Ozarks, Mark Twain.
- Prairie, walk-in strips, wind — Kansas WIHA, eastern Montana BLM, Dakotas on the state pages.
- Lease country with scraps of public — Texas on the state guide, timber-company page, Corps lots.

Where is the best public land to hunt deer? There is no single best. OTC vs draw, opening-weekend pressure, and how far you will walk beat a “trophy” forest name. Use the trip pages above, then the state guide for the tag.
Do I need a special license for a national forest? No. You need that state’s deer license and to be in the right unit. Forest-specific extras (Pioneer Weapons, some WMA overlays, CWD carcass rules) are on the forest page.
What if the famous forest is slammed? Hunt the overlooked page for that region, or the sibling forest on the compare. Ottawa’s backup is not “try harder on the same two-track.”
