Updated on September 7, 2026. Statewide dates, stamps, CWD carcass rules, and Sunday hunting sit on the West Virginia deer hunting page. This page is what is different on the Monongahela: high-elevation spruce, eight wildernesses, a two-week gun season that packs every pull-off on November 23, and antlerless cards that draw on three Forest counties. Confirm seasons in the WVDNR 2026–27 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Summary and Forest rules on the Monongahela hunting page before you hang a stand.
| State | West Virginia — Allegheny Mountains, 10 eastern highland counties |
|---|---|
| Manager | U.S. Forest Service, Monongahela National Forest (four ranger districts: Cheat-Potomac, Greenbrier, Marlinton–White Sulphur, Gauley). HQ: 200 Sycamore Street, Elkins. |
| Species | White-tailed deer. Black bear, grouse, and turkey are separate seasons, not a deer tag. |
| What differs here | No bait. Portable stands only. No motorized retrieve, including off-road to a downed deer. 150-yard no-discharge around residences, campsites, and developed rec. Who this forest is for
If you want red spruce, 4,000-foot benches, and a legal deer you packed off a wilderness ridge, hunt the Monongahela and accept fewer daylight deer than a Preston County farm edge.
If you need a freezer filled by Saturday night of gun week, do not start here. Hunt a north-central WMA on a weekday — that plan is on the state page — then come to the Forest when you want the woods trip.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. The Monongahela is the West Virginia version of that hill-country hunt, except the Forest Service owns more than 919,000 federal acres inside a 1.7-million-acre proclamation boundary, Spruce Knob tops out at 4,863 feet, and a mast bust plus a hard winter can empty a drainage that looked perfect in October. I learned the tourist-lot version the expensive way in 2019: I parked at the Spruce Knob observation lot at 5:40 a.m. on a Saturday in late October, counted nine other trucks before legal light, and spent the morning watching headlights instead of a spruce-to-hardwood transition 600 yards down the west face.
This is not a cornfield. It is not Ottawa swamp edges either. It is Allegheny Mountain timber with mixed hardwoods, high-elevation red spruce, mountain laurel, and eight designated wildernesses totaling about 115,000 acres. The general how-to for any national forest is on hunting national forest land. The West Virginia tag, two-buck cap, Sunday hunting, and CWD containment stay on the state guide. What follows is how I would actually spend three days on this Forest.
Four districts, not one blob
Pick a district before you pick a motel. The Forest is not one continuous block, and the west slope is a different climate than the rain-shadow east.
Cheat-Potomac (Parsons and Petersburg). North and northeast. Otter Creek Wilderness (20,698 acres in a bowl between Shavers Mountain and McGowan Mountain), Dolly Sods (17,371 acres of bog and heath that looks like southern Canada), and the Spruce Knob–Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area. Two offices: 459 Nursery Bottom, Parsons (304-478-3251) and 2499 North Fork Highway, Petersburg (304-257-4488). Stay in Parsons for Otter Creek and the Cheat. Stay in Petersburg for Dolly Sods and Seneca country.
Greenbrier (Bartow). East-central, along U.S. 250. Office at 7409 Staunton Parkersburg Turnpike, Bartow (304-456-3335). Drier rain-shadow oak than the Gauley. Laurel Fork North and South wildernesses sit here. Bartow is not a grocery town after dark — Elkins or Marlinton is.
Marlinton–White Sulphur (Marlinton and White Sulphur Springs). Pocahontas and Greenbrier. Cranberry and Tea Creek access from the east, Highland Scenic Highway (WV 150), Rimel, Lake Sherwood. Offices: 1627 Cemetery Road, Marlinton (304-799-4334) and 1079 Main Street East, White Sulphur Springs (304-536-2144). Big Draft Wilderness (5,144 acres) is the southern tip, about five miles north of White Sulphur Springs. Stay in Marlinton for the Pocahontas hunt. Lewisburg if you want I-64 and a processor without committing to a dead-end after dark.
Gauley (Richwood). West slope. Cranberry Wilderness — 47,815 acres in Pocahontas and Webster, the largest Forest Service wilderness in the East — plus the Williams River corridor and Tea Creek. Office: 932 North Fork Cherry Road, Richwood (304-846-2695). This is the wet side. The Forest’s about-page puts roughly 60 inches of precipitation on the western mountains and about half that on the eastern rain shadow. Hunt mast and browse accordingly. Stay in Richwood, and buy ice in Summersville on the way in.
West Virginia DNR co-manages ten WMAs inside the Forest: Beaver Dam, Blackwater, Cheat, Cranberry, Little River, Neola, Otter Creek, Potomac, Rimel, and Tea Creek. Yellow paint and WMA signs mark those co-op boundaries. Private inholdings sit inside the proclamation line. Purple paint is posting in this state. I do not guess at a paint color in the dark. Terrain: how deer actually use this mountain
Monongahela deer live in a landscape that runs from about 1,000 feet on the eastern edge to 4,863 feet at Spruce Knob. That is not a trivia line. It is why a ridge-top road hunt fails, why a spruce-to-hardwood transition works, and why a mast year and a mast bust do not hunt the same.
Here is what I do on this kind of ground, the same call I make in the Ozarks and on Mark Twain, just steeper and colder.
I hunt the places deer have to cross: a saddle between two points, the end of a bench that dumps into a steep cut, the first thick laurel or spruce blowdown off a ridge road, and the leeward third of a face when the wind is up. I do not sit the pretty oak flat 200 yards from a developed recreation site. Forest rule: no discharging a firearm within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site, or occupied area. That is not a suggestion. It also tells you where the people cluster. Do not shoot across a Forest road or into a cave.
Food is mast and browse, not beans. White oak drop under a single hot tree will pull deer until the caps go stale. Then they spread into mixed hardwoods, greenbrier, and the edges of old cuts. At elevation, red spruce and heath are bedding and winter cover, not a feedlot. When the oak crop fails and the winter is hard, the same drainage that looked perfect in October is empty — that is the honesty on the Appalachian national forest comparison. If acorns are everywhere, I hunt cover and funnels. If they are spotty, I hunt the fresh caps. Timing sits is deer feeding times, then the county’s mast, not a moon chart.
Hunters checked 92,553 deer statewide in 2025–26, down 17 percent, per the WVDNR harvest release — mast scattered deer, plus EHD in western counties. Randolph hit the top ten for antlerless (774), archery (860), and muzzleloader (158). Nicholas led muzzleloader at 186. Those are county totals, not Forest-only kills. Preston’s statewide lead is farm-and-creek country, not a Cranberry plan. A hot-September creek carcass is often EHD, not CWD.
Access, parking, and opening weekend
Download the Motor Vehicle Use Map for the district you are hunting. A two-track that looks open on a phone basemap can be gated, seasonal, or a private driveway. It is prohibited to run a motor vehicle on Forest trails or cross-country, including to retrieve a deer. If you cannot drag or pack it to a legal road, you should not take the shot.
November 23, 2026 is the statewide buck-firearms opener — 14 days, closes Sunday, December 6. Every pull-off with a view of an oak flat will have a truck in it. I do not race a headlamp to the first saddle. I park where it looks slightly wrong, walk past the first decent sign, and I want the last 200 yards steep, thick, or both. 0.6 to 1.5 miles is the band that starts to matter. If there is a Highland Scenic Highway overlook, a Dolly Sods FR 75 vista, or a Seneca Rocks climber lot, I add distance. Crowding tactics live on how to beat the crowds on public land opening day.
Two access problems that are unique this year, not generic Appalachia:
- Forest Road 86 (Williams River Road) — closed from the intersection of FR 216 to WV 150 starting July 20, 2026 for flood-damage repair, per the July 17, 2026 Forest Service release. Tea Creek Campground and Three Forks Trailhead stay reachable from Dyer, WV on the west. Cranberry Wilderness trailheads on FR 86 are not a drive-through. Check the Forest alerts the week you leave.
- Highland Scenic Highway (WV 150) — the Forest’s Cranberry page is blunt: it is not snowplowed in winter and is closed to vehicles. Three Cranberry Wilderness trailheads sit off that highway. A December muzzleloader plan that assumes 150 is open is a bad plan. Confirm at the Gauley office in Richwood.
Stands and blinds must be portable. No nails, no screw-in steps you leave, no permanent stand you “found.” I run a hang-on and sticks because that is what the rule allows and because I need to move when a two-track fills up.
Find portable climbing sticks on Amazon Amazon associate tag checkcheck-20. We may earn a commission.
Class Q/QQ hunters with a WVDNR disability permit can request designated Class Q Forest roads. That is a signed, gated program — not a loophole for your buddy’s truck.
Wind and thermals on 4,000-foot faces
A weather app that says “west 6 mph” is lying to you in a holler. Morning thermals crawl up the face. Evening thermals fall. Midday they swirl at the ridge lip. I hunt lower in the morning with a crosswind that dumps into a cut, and higher in the evening so falling air carries scent off the travel line. If the wind switches every three minutes, I do not force a tree. Cranberry Wilderness can frost any month of the year. Same physics as Allegheny, just more elevation: how to read wind and thermals. Rain is a reason to hunt. Wet leaves cover access.
Season notes versus the rest of West Virginia
Do not copy the whole state table onto this page. The 2026–27 archery window (Sept. 26–Dec. 31), 14-day buck firearms (Nov. 23–Dec. 6), split antlerless firearms, muzzleloader (Dec. 14–20), and two-buck statewide cap are on the West Virginia guide. What changes on the Monongahela:
- Baiting is banned on the Forest at all times — feed, minerals, attractants. Same rule on all West Virginia public land. Private-land baiting outside the CWD Containment Area is a different conversation and does not help you here.
- Nonresidents need a Class I stamp ($2) to hunt national forest land, on top of Class E and whatever weapon stamps you stacked. Buy it at WVhunt.com. Residents: confirm Class I on the current summary before you assume Class A or X covers Forest dirt.
- Antlerless on National Forest in Nicholas, Pocahontas, and Randolph is a draw. The 2026–27 summary lists limited Class N/NN cards: National Forest in Pocahontas County (500), National Forest and state land in Randolph County (350), National Forest in Nicholas County (50). Apply at WVhunt.com July 15 through Sept. 5, 2026. The card is an eligibility slip plus the stamp, for the tract printed on it. Webster County and Greenbrier’s north portion are also limited-permit counties that overlap Forest dirt. National Forest in Greenbrier and Monroe is listed closed to antlerless in the public-land pages of the summary — read that sheet before you assume a leftover N stamp works on the White Sulphur side.
- Wilderness is legal to hunt and illegal to wheel a deer out of. Motorized and mechanical equipment — chainsaws, bikes, wagons, wheelbarrows, deer carts — stay out of the eight wildernesses. Groups over 10 are prohibited. If you shoot deep in Cranberry, Dolly Sods, or Otter Creek, you are quartering and packing. I learned that in 2022, when I rolled a wheeled cart to a Cranberry trailhead off Route 150, read the wilderness sign, left the cart in the truck, and still-hunted a spruce-hardwood edge I could actually get a deer out of.
- CWD sits on the Grant and Pendleton edge, not as a Forest-wide carcass zone. The Forest hunting page (last updated March 6, 2026) still says positives have come from counties outside the Forest. WVDNR’s Containment Area includes Grant for carcass transport and baiting, and Pendleton for baiting only. Dolly Sods crosses Grant, Randolph, and Tucker. If you kill a deer in Grant County Forest land, treat it as containment: do not haul high-risk parts out of those seven carcass counties. Confirm the WVDNR CWD page the week you hunt. Symptoms and testing: CWD symptoms and how to get your deer tested for CWD.
- Sunday hunting is legal on this federal land. Hunter orange is 400 square inches as an outer garment during deer firearms and muzzleloader seasons, including bowhunters sitting those days. Why the color works is on why orange camo works. Dogs are not a deer-hunting method. A leashed tracking dog after a hit is the retrieve exception — the role of dogs in deer hunting.
I take the first legal deer that matches the hunt I drove for. Holding out for a Pike County rack on a Webster County spruce bench is how you eat tag soup.
Where to sit without dropping a pin
I will not give you a GPS coordinate. I will give you spot types you can repeat after you look at the MVUM and the paint.
Spruce-to-hardwood transition below a tourist high point. Not the Spruce Knob observation lot. Not a Highland Scenic Highway overlook. Four hundred to nine hundred yards down the leeward face, last stretch ugly, where red spruce gives way to oak and birch. Set up 20 to 40 yards off the bench on the downhill side so scent dumps below the travel line.
Leeward bench off a ridge road. Same sit I use on Mark Twain, transplanted onto Cheat Mountain sandstone. 400 to 900 yards, last stretch steep or thick. This is the Tuesday hunt when you did not draw a Class N card and you are hunting a buck tag.
Saddle that connects two bedding pockets. Not the lowest, cleanest gap on the map. The one with laurel, blowdowns, or a cut on one side that makes people groan. Rut sit. Light grunt, not a rattling concert — you will call in orange before you call in a buck near a trailhead. I packed an Illinois rattling bag onto a Gauley bench in 2018 and educated every deer in the holler. I hunt fresh sign now.
First thick cover off easy access during gun week. When shots start at 7:05 a.m. on November 23, deer dive into the nastiest cut, not off the scenic overlook. Hunt the downwind edge of that mess, 40 to 120 yards off, not in the middle of it. Public-land version: where to find unpressured deer on public land.
Cranberry Wilderness interior, only if you will pack. 47,815 acres, elevations 2,400 to over 4,600 feet, more than 70 miles of trail, no bridges, no blazes except at junctions, no deer cart. Trailheads off 150 (when it is open), off Cranberry Campground, and off FR 86 (when it is open). Hunt a bench or a river-head saddle you can side-hill out of. Do not shoot a deer you cannot get to a legal road on your back.
Dolly Sods off the vista, not on it. 17,371 acres, 2,500 to over 4,700 feet, 47 miles of old railroad grades. FR 75 and FR 19 are a backpacker parade in October. Hunt a drainage over, or hunt a weekday. The Forest is still posting unexploded World War II ordnance warnings from 1943 mountain training. A 1997 survey found 15 shells on trails and campsites, some live. Do not dig a ground blind into a suspicious crater. Mark it, walk away, call the district.
Otter Creek bowl. 20,698 acres between Shavers and McGowan, 1,800 to 3,900 feet. Cheat-Potomac. Wet rhododendron. Same pack-out rule. Parsons is the town.
Public-land tactics: how to hunt public land deer. Lease vs two-track: public land vs lease deer hunting.
If you are not hunting
The same land is a trip if the wind dies. Spruce Knob is the state’s high point — go look, then hunt somewhere else. Seneca Rocks Discovery Center is the Petersburg rainy-day plan, not a deer sit. Cranberry Glades is a boardwalk bog; the Nature Center is a few miles away when it is staffed. Lake Sherwood is the White Sulphur boat option. Blackwater Falls is a state park. Canaan Valley NWR is a separate refuge hunt — read the refuge page before you treat FR 80 as Forest camping. Climbers, backpackers, and opening-weekend trucks share this dirt. Hunt like it.
Where to stay, ice, and the meat pole
Pick a base for the district you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery that is open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet clothes. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before. Call a processor before you shoot. Ask if they take CWD-county deer, and when you can actually pick up meat. In Grant County I assume I am deboning in the field unless a drop-off says otherwise.
Elkins, WV — Forest headquarters, U.S. 33 and 219, grocery, rooms, and a real town if a Parsons gravel road turns into a recovery. Closest honest base for the north half.
Marlinton, WV — Marlinton–White Sulphur District, Cranberry and Tea Creek from the east, Highland Scenic Highway. Quieter. Cook in the cabin. This is the Pocahontas County hunt.
Richwood, WV — Gauley Ranger District doorstep. Cranberry Wilderness next door. If the grocery is closed, you should have bought ice in Summersville on the way in.
Petersburg, WV — Cheat-Potomac east office, Dolly Sods, Seneca Rocks. Grant County CWD paperwork lives on this side of the Forest.
Parsons, WV — Cheat-Potomac west office, Otter Creek, Cheat Canyon. Smaller than Elkins; plan groceries.
Lewisburg, WV — Greenbrier County harvest, I-64, White Sulphur office about 20 minutes east. Meat hunt on the south end without committing to a Richwood dead-end after dark.
A straight-up drag out of a 35-degree holler is a bad plan. I side-hill to a ridge road even if it adds a third of a mile. Field work is how to field dress a deer. Sidehill shot angles: shot-placement chart and the after the shot hub. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her. I wait now. Field-tag, then register at WVhunt.com — how to tag a deer. Mountain deer run lighter than corn-fed Illinois deer: how much meat from a deer.
Find a field boning knife on Amazon Amazon associate tag checkcheck-20. We may earn a commission.
If this Forest is slammed
If every Tea Creek and FR 75 pull-off has a truck at 5 a.m., I do not drive home. I go to a nastier access on the same district, I hunt a gated two-track on foot, or I slide from Gauley to Greenbrier and accept the drier oak. I do not invent a secret WMA. If I need deer on the ground, I leave the high country and hunt a north-central or Panhandle WMA on a weekday — that plan is on the state page, not here. Same-state neighbor woods: the West Virginia slice of George Washington and Jefferson in Hardy, Hampshire, and Pendleton. Other trips, not a same-morning backup from Richwood: Allegheny in Pennsylvania, Daniel Boone in Kentucky, Cherokee in Tennessee. Ottawa is the north-woods contrast, not a substitute ridge. If you are building a multi-state year, the index is deer hunting by state.
Wildlife that actually lives here
Black bears use this Forest. I hang food and I do not leave gut piles at a trailhead. Grouse, turkey, and snowshoe hare in the high spruce are the honest overlap. Brook trout are why the Cranberry and Williams get the other half of opening weekend. I am here for white-tailed deer. After dark on U.S. 219: what to do if you hit a deer. Elkins hosta beds are a different problem: do deer eat hostas.
FAQ
Do I need a draw tag to hunt deer on the Monongahela?
No for a buck. Buy the West Virginia license and stamps that match the weapon, plus Class I if you are a nonresident. Antlerless on National Forest in Nicholas, Pocahontas, and Randolph is the draw — Class N/NN limited permits, apply July 15–Sept. 5, 2026 at WVhunt.com. Confirm the current card counts in the WVDNR summary.
Can I use a deer cart in Cranberry or Dolly Sods?
No. Wilderness rules ban mechanical transport, including deer carts, bikes, and wagons. Quarter and pack, or hunt outside the wilderness boundary where a legal road lets you drag.
Is baiting legal on the Forest?
No. Not corn, not minerals, not a “just this once” pile. Forest Service and WVDNR both say it on public land. Private land outside the CWD Containment Area is a different rule and is not this hunt.
How far do I need to walk?
I start taking it seriously at about 0.6 miles, and I feel better at 1.0 to 1.5 miles if the last stretch is steep or thick. Easy Highland Scenic Highway or FR 75 walking does not count as distance. A steep 400-foot drop into laurel beats a flat two-mile gated-road stroll.
What about CWD if I kill a deer in Grant County?
Plan the head and the cooler before you shoot. Grant is in the WVDNR Containment Area for carcass transport. Do not drive high-risk parts out of those counties. Details move — the WVDNR CWD page wins.
Can I hunt Sunday?
Yes, on this federal land. Wear 400 square inches of blaze orange if a gun deer season is open that day.

I am not a guide. I am a public-land hunter who has eaten tag soup on more than one ridge. If you pick a district, hunt a spruce-hardwood bench or a nasty cover edge off the easy two-track, stay out of the 150-yard rec-site bubble, leave the deer cart in the truck at a wilderness sign, and keep a grocery and a processor in the same town as your pillow, the Monongahela will give you a shot. When it does, slow down, make it count, and side-hill the deer out.
