This page is what is different on Ozark National Forest: three cooperative WMAs with their own 2026–27 cards, a CWD core that started in Newton County, six ranger districts that do not keep the same office hours, and a St. Francis unit on Crowley’s Ridge that is not this hunt. If you want steep oak benches, a legal deer you earned on limestone, and a WMA card you actually read, hunt Ozark National Forest and accept fewer daylight deer than a Delta soybean edge.
If you need a freezer filled by Saturday night, or you hunt it like a Pike County bean-field lease, you will burn a long weekend watching pretty bluffs and seeing one tail.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I grew up broke, so I learned public land before I ever paid for a lease, and I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. Ozark National Forest is the Arkansas version of that hunt — same saddles and leeward points as Mark Twain — except the Forest Service dirt is overlaid with AGFC WMAs, CWD started here in 2016, and a Saturday on White Rock does not feel like a Saturday on Sylamore. What follows is how I would actually spend three days on this Forest.
Two forests, six districts, three hunts
The administrative name is Ozark–St. Francis. Treat it as two forests. St. Francis is 22,840 Forest Service acres on Crowley’s Ridge in Lee and Phillips counties, with the ranger office at 2955 Great River Rd in Marianna. AGFC lists St. Francis National Forest WMA at 22,798 acres with a 15-inch inside-spread or 18-inch main-beam rule. That is a river-adjacent hardwood hunt next to the Mississippi. It is not 1.2 million acres of Boston Mountain. I do not stay in Russellville to hunt Marianna.
The Ozark side is the trip this URL is for. Pick a district before you pick a motel. District offices do not all keep the same hours, and as of the Forest’s own offices page, some phones are flaky — if a district does not pick up, the Supervisor’s Office backup is (501) 802-0287.
Big Piney (Hector / Highway 7). Largest district. Office at 12000 AR-27, Hector — phone services only Monday–Friday 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., (479) 284-3150. The July 9, 2026 office sheet lists 509,789 Forest Service acres and 106,887 acres of private inholding inside a 616,676-acre footprint in Conway, Johnson, Madison, Newton, Pope, and Van Buren counties. It is the old Bayou District (Hector) plus the old Buffalo District (Jasper) under one name. Four wilderness areas, four wild-and-scenic river pieces, Pedestal Rocks, Sam’s Throne, Moccasin Gap (28 miles of multi-use trail), Brock Creek (37 miles). Stay in Russellville if you want grocery and a processor. Stay closer to Jasper or Hector only if you already know the gravel.
Pleasant Hill (Clarksville). Office at 2591 AR-21, Clarksville. Visitor center Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., (479) 754-2864. This is the south edge of White Rock and the Mulberry. Stay in Clarksville.
Boston Mountain (Ozark, AR). Office at 1803 N 18th St, Ozark. Visitor center Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., (479) 667-2191. White Rock Mountain, Shores Lake, the Pig Trail (Highway 23), and the mobility-impaired modern-gun permit for White Rock — AGFC sends you to this number. Do not show up Tuesday for a paper map.
Sylamore (Mountain View). Office at 1001 E Main St, Mountain View. Visitor center Monday and Wednesday 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., (870) 269-3228. Blanchard Springs Caverns is 704 Blanchard Springs Rd, Fifty-Six — Thursday–Monday, not a deer sit. Stay in Mountain View.
Mt. Magazine (Paris). Office at 3001 E Walnut St, Paris, Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., (479) 963-3076. Detached block south of the Arkansas River around the state’s high point (2,753 feet). Mount Magazine State Park sits on the summit. I do not hunt the state park like Forest Service dirt, and I do not treat Paris as a same-morning backup from a White Rock two-track.
A lot of land inside the proclamation is still private. Purple paint and posted signs win. A wounded deer does not give you a right to cross. I turn around at the mailbox.
Terrain: Boston Mountain benches, not one blob of oak
White Rock’s own AGFC card is the honest terrain sentence: deep hollows, steep benched ridges, precipitous bluffs. Upland hardwoods on north and east aspects. Shortleaf pine and pine-hardwood on south and west exposures. The Mulberry River cuts the south end. Shores Lake, Horsehead Lake, Lake Fort Smith, and Lake Shepherd Springs are the named water. Deer do not live in “the big woods.” They live on the steps: a 20-yard bench, a leeward point, the first thick cutover off a Forest Service road, a creek crossing in a dry November.
I hunt the places deer have to cross — a saddle, the end of a bench that dumps into a steep cut, the first brushy edge off a ridge road — the same call I make on Mark Twain and in the Ozarks public-land guide, except here the last stretch is often greenbrier and chert instead of cedar glade. I do not sit the pretty oak flat 200 yards from White Rock Mountain cabins or a Highway 7 overlook.
Sylamore is a different plateau. AGFC describes it as the Springfield Plateau: narrower rolling mountains, elevations about 1,250–1,700 feet, limestone cliffs, fertile stream valleys, and a lot of white oak left after 1950s stave-bolt cuts. Their own hunt note puts deer capacity around 15–20 per section, with quality bucks in deep ravines. That is not Illinois numbers. It is a reason to hunt cover, not a reason to expect a bean-field parade. North and South Sylamore Creeks, Gunner Pool, Barkshed, and Mirror Lake at Blanchard are the named water. The west boundary runs into National Park Service Buffalo River dirt. That corridor is not Forest Service, and I do not hunt it like a WMA two-track.
Food is mast and browse, not beans. White oak drop under a single hot tree will pull deer until the caps go stale. Then they spread into mixed hardwoods, pine edges, and the wildlife openings AGFC and the Forest Service actually maintain. Piney Creeks’ card says that since 1968 they have built 364 openings averaging about an acre and a half, plus 220 waterholes. I use those as edge, not as a pin. If acorns are everywhere, I hunt cover and funnels. If they are spotty, I hunt the fresh caps. Habitat notes that keep me from hunting empty oak flats: deer habitat.
Five designated wilderness areas sit on the Ozark side — East Fork, Hurricane Creek, Leatherwood, Richland Creek, Upper Buffalo — about 66,728 acres total, and none of them on St. Francis. Upper Buffalo is contiguous with NPS wilderness on the Buffalo National River. Hurricane Creek carries a piece of the Ozark Highlands Trail. I will not drop a pin in any of them. A wilderness trailhead on opening Saturday can still be a parking lot. Midweek it is the honest “go farther” play, and if you shoot deep you are quartering.
Access, the MVUM, and opening weekend
The Motor Vehicle Use Map is the legal road list. If a two-track is on the ground and not on the map, it is not open. Download the current PDFs from the Forest maps page the week I leave. AGFC also keeps georeferenced WMA maps at apps.agfc.com/maps. OHVs stay on designated routes. A 2024 Forest Service hunter reminder that still matches the current hunting page: Ozark–St. Francis does not have game-retrieval corridors. Do not drive to the deer. Unlike Ouachita, you do not get a 14-day stand-move rule in that press note — what they said for this Forest is simpler: remove hunting stands at the end of the season.
Check Forest alerts the night before. FSR 1003 (White Rock Road) had a closure that was partially lifted; a May 22, 2026 release said the road was open, and the alert list still flagged it when I last checked. Spring Lake Recreation Area is listed closed for the rest of the 2026 season. I do not invent a workaround around a gate.
White Rock access, from the WMA card: U.S. 71 on the west at Winslow and Mountainburg; Highway 16 from the north at Dutton, Delaney, Combs, St. Paul, and Pettigrew; I-40 from the south via Highway 103 at Clarksville, the Pig Trail (Highway 23) at Ozark, and Highway 71 at Alma. The area sits 13 miles north of Ozark, 14 miles northwest of Clarksville, and 25 miles southeast of Fayetteville. Piney Creeks: Highway 7 north of Russellville (forest portal about 15 miles), Highway 123 north of Lamar, Highway 7 south from Harrison about 50 miles to Pelsor. Sylamore: Highway 14 west of Mountain View, Highway 14 east of Marshall/Big Flat, Highway 5 or 341 south of Mountain Home/Calico Rock.
November 14, 2026 is the modern-gun opener on all three WMA cards. Every easy Forest Service pull-off with a gravel pad will have a truck in it. That is not a reason to stay home. It is a reason to hunt like public land deer: hunters cluster near roads, peak on opening weekend, and quit when the walk gets steep. I park where it looks slightly wrong, walk past the first decent sign, and I want the last 200 yards steep, brushy, or both. 0.6 to 1.5 miles is the band that starts to matter. If I can still hear truck doors at 6:40 a.m., I am too close to the gravel. Opening-day clustering is how to beat the crowds on public land opening day. If the easy access is orange, the next question is where to find unpressured deer on public land.
Do not hunt developed recreation sites. Blanchard Springs, Gunner Pool, Barkshed, Shores Lake, Horsehead Lake, Long Pool, Haw Creek Falls, White Rock Mountain, Redding, Wolf Pen — those are family trips and Forest Order ground (camping limits, group size, the usual rec-site list through Dec. 31, 2026). Sylamore’s card is blunt: dogs, hunting, or trapping equipment are not allowed in Blanchard Springs Recreation Area. I hang a portable stand, I label it, and I take it home when the season ends. I run a hang-on and sticks because I need to move when a two-track fills up.

Wind and thermals in a Boston Mountain hollow
A weather app that says “west 6 mph” is lying to you in a Mulberry holler. Ridge-top gravel can be a steady west or northwest push. Ten yards over the rim it swirls. Down in a hollow it often runs downhill at first light, uphill after the sun hits the slope, then downhill again at last light. I set 20 to 40 yards off the bench on the downhill side so scent dumps below the travel line, into a steep side or a creek, not into bedding. On a swirling midday I leave the deep sit and hunt a thicker escape edge closer to access. Same physics as do deer move in the wind. I still check deer feeding times so I am not walking that bench at the minute a deer wants to leave it. I wasted $400 on ozone scent control years ago. It did not fix a loud access or a swirling hollow.
Season notes versus statewide Arkansas
You do not get an Ozark National Forest deer season. You hunt AGFC dates on USFS ground, and on White Rock, Piney Creeks, and Sylamore you hunt the WMA card, which is often tighter than the private-land zone around it. Full statewide dates, license cost, and the two-buck cap live on the Arkansas guide. Permits are OTC. There is no Forest Service hunting fee. What a WMA actually is lives on wildlife management areas.
What actually changes on this dirt, last checked September 7, 2026 on the three WMA pages:
- 2026–27 deer windows match on White Rock, Piney Creeks, and Sylamore: archery Aug. 29–31 (one antlered buck only) then Sept. 26–Feb. 28; alternative firearms Oct. 17–25; modern gun Nov. 14–Dec. 6 and Dec. 26–28; youth Nov. 7–8 and Jan. 2–3. White Rock also lists a mobility-impaired modern-gun hunt Nov. 7–8 (permit through the Boston Mountain office, 479-667-2191).
- WMA bag is three deer, no more than two antlered bucks, and no antler restrictions — these cards sit in the CWD zone. Antlerless on gun is not a free-for-all: one antlerless during alternative firearms or during the first two days of modern gun, plus archery antlerless. Do not copy a private-land four-deer screenshot onto a WMA sit.
- No bait. Wildlife management areas: no bait. I hunt public without a pile either way.
- No deer dogs. These are northern-zone / WMA hunts. White Rock and Piney Creeks even shut squirrel dogs Nov. 14–22. A leashed tracking dog after a hit is a wounded-deer procedure, not a drive.
- Sunday hunting is legal. Wear at least 400 square inches of hunter orange plus a cap during modern-gun and alternative-firearms seasons.
- Check the harvest within 12 hours. Tag before you move it. You may quarter in the field if the head stays within arm’s reach of all four quarters until it is checked.
Chronic wasting disease is not a rumor on this Forest. It showed up in 2016 in Newton County elk and deer. AGFC’s first intensive sample around those animals came back at 23 percent in northern Newton County. White Rock, Piney Creeks, and Sylamore all carry the CWD-zone icon. You cannot haul an intact CWD-zone deer into a clean county. I bone meat in the zone or I use an AGFC drop site. Where to sit without dropping a pin
I will not drop a GPS pin. Pins on public land become parking lots. These sit types repeat from a White Rock two-track, a Highway 7 Piney Creeks ridge, or a Sylamore ravine off Highway 14.
The first quiet bench off the gravel. Sit 20 to 40 yards downhill of the shelf, 400 to 900 yards from easy access, with a shot at the side-hill trail instead of the ridge-top road. If I smell deer or hear a blow before legal light, I am too close for that wind and I back out to the next terrace.
The first ugly cover 100 to 250 yards off the road, firearms week. Greenbrier, a young cut, a pine thicket. Deer pile in when shots start popping at 7:05 a.m. Hunt the edge, not the middle. Deep backcountry dreams on Nov. 14 are how you hike past the deer that already fled the lot.
The second saddle, not the first. The clean saddle off a Forest Service road is a deer crossing and a hunter crossing. I want the next one, the one with a steep side that makes people groan. Light grunt, not a rattling concert — you will call in orange before you call in a buck near a Pig Trail pull-off.
White oak, only if today’s caps are there. Fresh caps, shiny droppings, tracks made today. If the crop is a bust I hunt browse, 3- to 8-year regeneration, and those AGFC openings instead of “oak” in my head.
Wilderness midweek, or a Piney Creeks food-plot edge if the mast is gone. Upper Buffalo, Hurricane Creek, Richland Creek, East Fork, Leatherwood: foot or horse, same benches, no wheels. I hunt a drainage over from the popular Ozark Highlands Trail tread. The Forest Service describes that trail as running from Lake Fort Smith State Park on Arkansas 71 to Woolum near the Buffalo and on into Sylamore; foot travel only. Their page still cites about 230 miles built as of 2017. I treat white blazes like a road.
If I cannot explain why a deer would walk that shelf at 8:10 a.m., I do not sit there. These are white-tailed deer in timber. Most honest shots are inside 80 yards; a lot of the good bow shots are inside 30. Refresh shot placement, then after the shot and how to field dress a deer. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her.
If you are not hunting
The same land is a fall trip without a tag. I would rather burn a blown-wind afternoon on a bluff than educate a bench I plan to hunt at daylight. White Rock Mountain is the cabin-and-view play — go do that from town, then hunt somewhere else. Blanchard Springs Caverns is the rainy-day walk; reserve on Recreation.gov because tours sell out. Pedestal Rocks and Haw Creek Falls are the Highway 16 / 123 stops. The Mulberry and Big Piney Creek (57 miles of National Wild and Scenic River from near Fallsville to the Arkansas River) are the paddle if the wind is wrong. Where to stay, ice, and a meat pole
Pick the town for the district you will actually park in. Drive time to a Forest Service gate at 4:45 a.m. beats a nicer lobby 50 minutes away. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet clothes. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before, twice if archery is still 80 degrees. Call a processor before you shoot. Ozark shops book, and in the CWD zone I ask two questions: are you taking CWD-area deer, and when can I actually pick up meat.
Russellville, AR — Supervisor’s Office town on I-40. Grocery, rooms, Piney Creeks / Highway 7 access, a processor the same afternoon if you call ahead. Best all-around base if you have not picked a district yet.
Clarksville, AR — Pleasant Hill office on AR-21. Closer to the south edge of White Rock and the Mulberry than Russellville is. Real grocery. Stay here if your parking is north of I-40 on 103 or 21.
Ozark, AR — Boston Mountain office on 18th Street. Pig Trail (Highway 23) and White Rock south access. Smaller than Russellville; plan a processor backup in Clarksville if you need one.
Mountain View, AR — Sylamore office on East Main. Blanchard, Gunner Pool, Highway 14. Cabin country. Cook in the kitchen. Do not assume a 10 p.m. ice run in Fifty-Six.
Harrison, AR — north Big Piney and Newton County CWD ground, Highway 7 south toward Pelsor. Confirm carcass rules before you drive a deer south out of the zone. Grocery and rooms without sleeping in a Branson overflow.
An Ozark drag up a limestone slope can be 900 yards of pain. I side-hill to a ridge road even if it adds a third of a mile, and if I am more than about 0.9 mile from the truck I already plan to quarter and pack. I process my own deer in the garage when I can, taught by my uncle who was a butcher. Hill-country deer run lighter than corn-fed Illinois deer, so I size coolers with how much meat from a deer. If this forest is slammed, hunt this instead
If every White Rock two-track has trucks at 5 a.m., I do not go two miles deeper into nothing. I hunt a nastier access on the same district — a gated spur I will walk, a wilderness trail instead of a recreation-area lot, Piney Creeks instead of the first Highway 23 pull-off. I do not invent a secret WMA. A different national-forest overnight is a sibling and a different license. Mark Twain is the Missouri version of these same hills; overlooked tracts on that side of the line are on overlooked Ozarks public land. Daniel Boone is Kentucky ridge-and-holler. Cherokee is the Tennessee WMA overlay with a national park in the middle. Ottawa is Michigan U.P. swamp edges, not a substitute bench. Ouachita National Forest is the other big Arkansas public block — pine-oak, more east-west ridges, Hot Springs as a base — and it does not have a dedicated WorldDeer unit URL yet, so I am not inventing one. Wildlife that actually lives here
Black bears use these same oak ridges. White Rock, Piney Creeks, and Sylamore all list bear seasons that close early when Bear Zone 1 quota is reached. I hang food, I do not leave a gut pile by a tent, and I do not turn every snap into a story. The Forest’s own alert is “Be Bear Aware.” Wild turkey use the same regeneration, openings, and oak mast the deer use, which is why I do not stomp a cut in October for no reason. Elk in the Buffalo highlands are a separate limited hunt, not a deer tag. Timber rattlesnakes and copperheads use the same south slopes I hunt as deer bedding. I watch my hands in the leaves. Ticks and chiggers run late here; I treat clothes. No wolves. No gorillas. Whitetails are the animal you came for. Wild diet is acorns and browse — what do deer eat.
FAQ
Do I need a special national-forest deer tag for Ozark National Forest?
No. A valid Arkansas hunting license with deer tags and AGFC seasons. No Forest Service hunting fee. On White Rock, Piney Creeks, and Sylamore you also hunt the WMA card — shorter gun windows and a three-deer WMA bag, not the private-land screenshot. Anyone 16 or older hunting on a WMA needs the WMA general-use privilege; a hunting license covers it.
How far should I walk off a Forest Service road?
Far enough that the last 200 yards are the hard part. Here that is often 400 to 900 yards, or one steep hollow most guys will not cross. Two miles into a dead oak flat is still a dead oak flat. Pleasant walking on the Ozark Highlands Trail does not count as distance.
Can I bait or put out minerals on Ozark National Forest?
Not on the WMAs that cover the hunt-able Ozark blocks. I hunt without either. Private land outside the Forest is a different rule and is not this hunt. Inside the CWD zone, even private baiting is seasonal — that lives on the Arkansas page.
Can I hunt deer with dogs here?
No. These northern WMAs and zones do not allow dogs for deer. Southern Arkansas is a different sport on a different card.
Is Sunday hunting legal?
Yes. Wear at least 400 square inches of hunter orange plus a cap during modern-gun and alternative-firearms seasons.
Can I leave a stand up all season?
The Forest Service hunter reminder for Ozark–St. Francis is to remove hunting stands at the end of the hunting season. I hunt mobile anyway — hang-on, sticks, two trees for two winds — because a two-track that was empty on Thursday is a parking lot on Saturday. Do not drive off the MVUM to retrieve a deer; this Forest has no game-retrieval corridors.

If you pick a district, hunt a bench or a nasty cover edge off the easy two-track, stay out of the 150-yard rec-site buffer, read the WMA card instead of the statewide screenshot, and keep a grocery and a processor in the same town as your pillow, Ozark National Forest will give you a shot. When it does, slow down, make it count, and side-hill the deer out.
