Who this forest is for
If you want room to walk, longleaf ridges, and a still-hunt only forest, hunt Kisatchie and accept fewer deer, pine thickets, and a 150-yard buffer off every campground.
If you need a freezer filled by Saturday night, do not start here. Hunt a bottomland WMA on a weekday either-sex day, then come to the pine hills when you want the woods trip.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. Kisatchie is the Louisiana version of that Ozark walk — except the Forest is not one block, the trees are longleaf and loblolly instead of white oak, the Forest Service will cite you for a stand you left Tuesday, and the parish around you may run dogs while the Forest itself never does.
This is not Sherburne. It is not a cornfield. It is not Ottawa swamp edges either. It is scattered pine-hills public across Grant, Natchitoches, Winn, Rapides, Vernon, Claiborne, and Webster parishes. The general how-to for any national forest is on hunting national forest land. Five districts, not one blob
Pick a district before you pick a motel. Kisatchie is Louisiana’s only national forest, and it is a patchwork, not a green rectangle.
Kisatchie Ranger District (Natchitoches Parish, ~102,000 acres). The namesake. Sandstone bluffs at Longleaf Vista, the 17-mile Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway (Forest Highway 59 off I-49 Derry / exit 119), Kisatchie Bayou, the 8,700-acre Kisatchie Hills Wilderness, and the ~38,000-acre Red Dirt National Wildlife Management Preserve. District office: 229 Dogwood Park Road, Provencal, (318) 472-1840. Stay in Natchitoches.
Catahoula Ranger District (Grant and Rapides, ~121,500 acres). Closest to Alexandria and Pineville. North of Dry Prong on U.S. 167 is the Catahoula National Wildlife Management Preserve (~36,000 acres, shared with Winn). Hunter camps at Highway 472 and Pearson. District office: 5325 LA Highway 8, Bentley, (318) 765-3554. Stay in Alexandria if you want grocery and a processor on the same trip.
Winn Ranger District (~164,000 acres in Winn, Grant, and Natchitoches). Gum Springs, Cloud Crossing, Saline Bayou, Keiffer Prairie. Shares the Catahoula preserve. Office: 12319 U.S. Highway 84 West, Winnfield, (318) 628-4664. Stay in Winnfield if you are hunting that block and do not want I-49 traffic.
Calcasieu Ranger District (~183,000 acres in two units). Evangeline Unit (~97,000 acres, Rapides, Kincaid Lake, west of Alexandria). Vernon Unit near Leesville, excluding the Fort Polk–Vernon WMA overlay — that military WMA is not “regular Kisatchie.” Archery on the Vernon Unit opens Sept. 19, two weeks before the rest of the Forest. Office in Boyce: (318) 793-9427. Stay in Leesville for Vernon, Alexandria for Evangeline.
Caney Ranger District (Webster and Claiborne, near Homer and Minden). The northern outlier — three small units (Caney, Corney, Middlefork) toward the Arkansas line. Same Area 2 calendar as the parish around it, except still-hunt only, and either-sex the whole season. That is the fork that actually changes a trip. Office: 3288 Highway 79, Homer, (318) 927-2061. Stay in Homer.
Do not treat Caney like the rest of the Forest, and do not treat Fort Polk–Vernon WMA like the Vernon Unit. Read the current federal lands schedule for the tract you parked on.
Terrain: how deer use longleaf, cuts, and sandstone
Kisatchie deer live in four plant communities the Forest actually maps: longleaf pine, shortleaf pine / oak-hickory, mixed hardwood-loblolly, and riparian. The sandstone hills on the Kisatchie District are some of the steepest ground in Louisiana. That is not a trivia line. It is why a two-track hunt on pretty planted pine fails and a nasty-edge hunt works.
Here is what I do on this kind of ground, the same call I make in the Ozarks and on Mark Twain, adjusted for heat and fire.
I hunt the places deer have to cross: a seeded log deck growing briar, a three-year-old cutover against older timber, the first dry ridge off a creek swamp, a beaver pond edge, and the leeward side of a longleaf ridge after a prescribed burn when new browse is the only green thing in the section. I do not sit the pretty pine flat 80 yards off Forest Highway 59. Forest rule: no hunting or shooting within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site, or occupied area. That is not a suggestion. It also tells you where the people cluster. Hunting within 50 feet of the centerline of any road on KNF is prohibited. If you can glass a deer from the truck, you are already in the wrong spot.
Food is mast and browse, not beans. When a few oaks dump, hunt those trees until the caps go stale. When they do not, hunt the greenbrier, honeysuckle, and the edge of a recent cut. The Forest burns for red-cockaded woodpecker habitat. A fresh burn looks empty at noon and can be a magnet at last light. If acorns are everywhere, I hunt cover. If they are spotty, I hunt the fresh caps. Habitat notes that keep me off empty pine: deer habitat.
In yards these same deer hammer plants like hostas. In the woods I hunt, they are living on browse, mast, and heat. Pine-hills bucks often look smaller than a bottomland Sherburne deer or a Pike County Illinois deer. I decide at home if I am shooting the first legal deer. Access, parking, and the 24-hour stand clock
Download the Motor Vehicle Use Map for the district you are hunting. Motorized travel off designated roads and trails is prohibited on the entire Forest. ATVs and UTVs are capped at 50 inches, banned at night, and game retrieval is only along designated 300-foot corridors on the MVUM. A two-track that looks open on a phone basemap can be gated, seasonal, or a private driveway. Private land is interspersed. Yellow or red paint is not a guess in the dark. Written permission is the only honest answer on an inholding.
Either-sex gun days on most of the Forest in 2026-27 are Oct. 31–Nov. 1 and Nov. 27. Those three days are the circus. Every pull-off with a view of a cut will have a truck in it. I do not race a headlamp to the first seeded deck. I park where it looks slightly wrong, walk past the first decent sign, and I want the last 200 yards ugly — briar, a cutover, or a creek swamp other people will not cross in snake country. 400 to 900 yards is the band that starts to matter. Stands are the rule that wrecks Midwest habits. Hunting from a permanent stand is prohibited. Placing or leaving a temporary stand is limited to 24 hours. WMA stand, blind, tripod, baiting, and spotlighting rules apply unless the Forest carves out an exception. I run a hang-on and sticks because I have to pull the set every day, and because I need to move when a two-track fills up. I do not leave a lock-on for the week. If you grew up hanging a stand in October for a November sit, this Forest will not let you.

Catahoula and Red Dirt NWMPs add paperwork. Hunting, fishing, or trapping on either preserve needs a free season permit — print it, sign it, keep it on you. On deer gun hunts and turkey, you also need a self-clearing daily permit (paper at check stations, hunter camps, and district offices, or electronic through LDWF). Mandatory deer checks apply on primitive firearms (Oct. 24–25) and either-sex gun days (Oct. 31–Nov. 1 and Nov. 27) at the main check stations. The preserves are not “secret Kisatchie.” They are the tracts with extra eyes. Fishing on the preserves is closed during deer gun hunts. Loaded firearms in a vehicle are prohibited on KNF — live round in the chamber, magazine, cylinder, or attached clip, or a cocked crossbow. Unload before the truck. Do not shoot across a Forest road or a body of water. Centerfire rifles stay cased except during modern and primitive deer seasons.
Wind and thermals in pine hills
A weather app that says “north 6 mph” is lying to you in a longleaf draw. Morning thermals crawl up a sandstone face as it warms. Evening thermals fall. Midday they swirl at the ridge lip. I hunt lower in the morning with a crosswind that dumps into a creek or a burn, and I hunt higher in the evening so falling air carries scent off the travel line. If the wind is switching every three minutes, I do not force a tree. I still-hunt damp pine straw or I sit an edge where a bad swirl hits open burn or water, not a bedding thicket.
That is the same thermal problem as Daniel Boone and Mark Twain, just hotter and flatter on most districts. When I want a reminder of how deer use wind, I reread do deer move in the wind and then I still pick the leeward third of the ridge. Rain is a reason to hunt, not a reason to sit in Natchitoches. October in Louisiana is still snake and tick weather. I wear gaiters in palmetto and creek edges. I wasted money on $400 ozone scent control that made zero difference in Illinois; I would rather play the wind and stay quiet here too.

Season notes versus the rest of Louisiana
Do not copy the whole state table onto this page. The ten deer areas, OTC licenses, 72-hour validation, and CWD map are on the Louisiana guide. What changes on Kisatchie:
- Still hunt only. The parish around you may have a “firearms with or without dogs” window. The Forest does not. Training deer dogs is prohibited year-round. Hog hunting with dogs is not allowed on KNF. A tracking dog on a leash after a hit follows WMA rules — read that section before you turn a hound out. I hunt this Forest without dogs.
- One deer per day up to the statewide seasonal limit. Statewide on most private land is one antlered and one antlerless per day when legal. That extra doe in the same morning is not legal here.
- Archery is split. Vernon Unit (excluding Fort Polk–Vernon WMA): Sept. 19, 2026 – Jan. 15, 2027. Catahoula, Winn, Kisatchie, Evangeline, Caney, and both NWMPs: Oct. 1 – Jan. 31. Archers hunt bucks only while a bucks-only firearms season is in progress on KNF, and they wear hunter orange or blaze pink during any firearm deer season. LDWF WMA orange/pink rules apply.
- Gun days are short on most of the Forest. Youth either-sex Oct. 10–16. Primitive either-sex Oct. 24–25 and Jan. 2–3. Firearms either-sex Oct. 31–Nov. 1 and Nov. 27. Firearms bucks-only Nov. 7–26, Nov. 28–29, and Dec. 12–27. Last checked September 7, 2026 against the Forest 2026–27 hunting dates sheet. If this page and LDWF disagree, LDWF wins.
- Caney is the exception. Webster and Claiborne tracts follow Area 2 dates, including youth and primitive, except still-hunt only, and either-sex the entire season. That is why I will drive to Homer for a midweek gun sit when the rest of the Forest is bucks-only.
- Baiting is banned. WMA bait rules apply. Corn piles teach deer and teach other hunters where to sit. I hunt public dirt without bait. If you are still choosing public versus a lease year, that split is public land vs lease deer hunting.
- CWD is a northeast problem first. Louisiana’s 55 detections through 2025-26 are concentrated in Tensas Parish, with single cases in Ouachita, Catahoula, and Concordia. Management zones (15 miles from a positive) currently cover parts of those northeast parishes — not the same thing as the Catahoula Ranger District, which sits in Grant and Rapides. Caney, on the Claiborne–Webster line, is the district I would double-check against the LDWF CWD map before I haul a whole carcass. Symptoms: CWD symptoms. - No spring squirrel on KNF. Waterfowl hunting ceases at noon. Corney Lake duck blinds on Caney need a free tag from the Homer office.
Out-of-state hunters: a basic hunting license plus a deer license covers Forest deer hunting. Some WMA and refuge hunts still draw; Kisatchie itself does not. Where to sit without dropping a pin
I will not give you a GPS coordinate. I will give you spot types you can repeat after you look at the MVUM and the paint.
Nasty edge off a Forest road, 400 to 900 yards. Last stretch briar, a cut, or a creek swamp. Set up 20 to 40 yards off the travel line on the downwind side so scent dumps into the mess, not into the bedding. This is the Mark Twain sit, transplanted onto longleaf.
Fresh burn or cutover against older timber. Not the middle of a 40-acre opening every other truck can glass. The first thick stuff on the downwind edge, 40 to 120 yards off.
Sandstone bench or saddle on the Kisatchie District. Not Longleaf Vista on a Saturday. A drainage over from the gazebo crowd, where the wilderness or Red Dirt makes people groan about the pack-out. Hunting is legal in Kisatchie Hills Wilderness. Mechanized equipment is not. If you shoot deep, you are quartering.
Caney midweek, either-sex. Smaller tracts, Area 2 dates, still-hunt only. Pressure is not zero. Walk past Bucktail and Turkey Trot hunter camps before you hang.
Either-sex gun morning, downwind of the push you did not sign up for. When shots start at 7:05 a.m., deer dive into the nastiest cut, not off the scenic byway. Sit that edge. Do not rattle all day. You will call in orange before you call in a buck near Highway 472 Camp.
If you are still deciding whether this Forest is worth the walk versus a lease, that split is already linked above. Southern timber-company dirt is a different access system — deer hunting timber company land in the South — not a same-morning backup from Natchitoches.
If you are not hunting
The same land is a trip if the wind dies or you brought family. Longleaf Vista is the rainy-day plan on the Kisatchie District: stone gazebo, panoramic view of Kisatchie Hills Wilderness, 1.5-mile interpretive loop, potable water, picnic tables. From I-49 take the Derry exit (119), south on LA 119 5.5 miles to Forest Highway 59, then 3.2 miles to the signed junction. Do not hunt the picnic area. Stay 150 yards off it.
Kisatchie Bayou has the sandy-beach-and-rapids day if you want water. Kincaid Lake on the Evangeline Unit is the 2,600-acre boat-and-eagle option west of Alexandria; the Forest runs eagle cams on loblolly near that shore. Gum Springs (Winn) is the horse-camp version. Stuart Lake sits on Catahoula. The Supervisor’s Office is in Pineville if you need a map before you commit to a district. Climbers are not the problem here. Opening-weekend trucks, OHV routes, and hunter camps are. Hunt like you share it, because you do.
Where to stay, ice, and the meat pole
Pick a base for the district you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery that is open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on an either-sex morning and a place I can hang wet clothes. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before. Call a processor before you shoot. Ask if they are taking deer that weekend, and when you can actually pick up meat. Pine-hills deer run lighter than a flooded-timber buck; size the cooler with how much meat from a deer.
Natchitoches, LA — Kisatchie Ranger District, Red Dirt, Longleaf Vista. Grocery, rooms, and a real town if the weather dies.
Alexandria, LA — Catahoula and Evangeline units, I-49, processors, Supervisor’s Office in Pineville.
Leesville, LA — Vernon Unit. Confirm you are not on Fort Polk–Vernon WMA before you book the week around a military closure.
Homer, LA — Caney District, Corney Lake, the Arkansas-line tracts. Smaller town; plan groceries.
Winnfield, LA — Winn District and the north side of Catahoula Preserve. Quieter than Alexandria if that is the block you drew.
A straight-up drag through palmetto is a bad plan. I side-hill to a designated road even if it adds a third of a mile, and I remember the 300-foot ATV retrieval rule exists only where the MVUM drew it. I process my own deer in the garage, taught by my uncle who was a butcher, and I still call a shop when I am 900 yards into Red Dirt. Field work is how to field dress a deer. If this Forest is slammed
If every two-track off Forest Highway 59 has a truck at 5 a.m., I do not drive home. I go to a nastier access on the same district, I slide to Caney and accept Area 2 dates, or I hunt Tuesday through Thursday. I do not invent a secret WMA. If I need deer on the ground, I leave the pine hills and hunt a bottomland WMA on a weekday — that plan is on the Louisiana page, not here. Indian Bayou (Corps) and Tensas River NWR are different permits and different calendars; they are not a same-morning backup from Natchitoches.
There is no live De Soto, Ouachita, Ozark, or Sabine unit page on this site yet. I am not inventing those URLs. Neighboring-state trips we already cover: Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas. Those are other weekends. Use the official forest map, or those state guides, instead of a 404.
Wildlife that actually lives here
Red-cockaded woodpeckers nest in the longleaf the Forest burns. That is why a stand of open pine with painted cavity trees is a habitat project, not a honey hole. Louisiana pine snake is a threatened species tied to that same open longleaf and pocket-gopher country — I do not kill snakes for sport, and I watch where I put my hand in a cutover. Feral hogs are on almost every tract I would bother to hunt; they are legal incidental take on a deer hunt with a weapon legal for that hunt, not the reason I drive south. Bald eagles show up around Kincaid. Black bear is a different permit. I am here for white-tailed deer.

FAQ
Do I need a draw tag to hunt deer on Kisatchie National Forest?
No. A Louisiana basic hunting license plus a deer license covers Forest deer hunting. Catahoula and Red Dirt NWMPs add a free season permit and, on gun hunts, a self-clearing daily permit. Fort Polk–Vernon WMA is a different overlay. Some state WMAs and refuges still draw; that is not this Forest.
Can I hunt Kisatchie with dogs?
Not for deer. Still-hunt only. Training deer dogs is prohibited year-round. Hog dogs are not allowed. Bird dogs, beagles for rabbits (15-inch shoulder cap), and raccoon dogs have their own seasons and collar rules. I hunt deer here without dogs.
Is baiting legal on the Forest?
No. WMA bait, stand, and spotlight rules apply. Private land outside the Forest is a different rule and is not this hunt.
How long can I leave a treestand?
Twenty-four hours. Permanent stands are prohibited. Pull it when you leave for town. That is the rule that changes how I pack.
When are the either-sex gun days?
On most of the Forest in 2026-27: Oct. 31–Nov. 1 and Nov. 27, still-hunt only. Caney follows Area 2 and is either-sex all season, still-hunt only. Confirm on the LDWF seasons page and the Forest date sheet, last checked September 7, 2026.
How far do I need to walk?
I start taking it seriously at about 400 yards, and I feel better at 600 to 900 if the last stretch is briar, a cut, or a swamp. Easy Longleaf Byway walking does not count as distance. If the walk is pleasant the whole way, expect company.

I am not a guide. I am a public-land hunter who has eaten tag soup on more than one ridge. If you pick a district, hunt a nasty cover edge off the easy two-track, pull the stand every day, stay out of the 150-yard campground buffer, and keep a grocery and a processor in the same town as your pillow, Kisatchie will give you a shot. When it does, slow down, make it count, and drag toward a road the MVUM actually opened.
