Updated on September 7, 2026. Statewide dates, bags, and CWD rules sit on the Arkansas deer hunting and Oklahoma deer hunting pages. This page is what is different on the Forest: two licenses, east-west ridges, cooperative WMAs, and a Forest Order that bans bait. Confirm seasons on the AGFC zone table or the ODWC deer page, and Forest rules on the Ouachita hunting page, before you hang a stand.
| States | Arkansas (most of the acres) and Oklahoma (Le Flore and McCurtain). Pick one license. The state line is not a suggestion. |
|---|---|
| Manager | U.S. Forest Service, Ouachita National Forest. Supervisor’s Office: 100 Reserve Street, Hot Springs, AR. Nearly 1.8 million acres in 12 Arkansas counties and 2 Oklahoma counties. Oldest and largest national forest in the South. Forest home |
| Species | White-tailed deer. Black bear is a separate season on the same ridges, not a deer tag. |
| What differs here | East-west ridges (hardwood north faces, pine south faces). Forest Order OA-ONF-07-2026: no bait; portable stands 14 consecutive days, then 200 yards, name and address on the stand. Oklahoma NF land sits inside Ouachita WMA. Arkansas mixes general forest with Winona, Caney Creek, and Muddy Creek cooperative WMAs. |
| Pressure | Highest on the Arkansas modern-gun opener (Nov. 14, 2026) along U.S. 270, Arkansas 7, and the Talimena Scenic Drive. Oklahoma gun opens a week later (Nov. 21). Lowest: a midweek north-face bench, or a wilderness drain most trucks will not pack into. |

Who this forest is for
If you want east-west pine-oak ridges, a legal deer you earned on your legs, and enough public dirt to walk past the first two-track, hunt the Ouachitas and accept fewer daylight deer than a Delta WMA or an Oklahoma farm-edge sit.
If you need a freezer filled by Saturday night, do not start here. Hunt a farm-country WMA on a weekday, then come to these mountains when you want the woods trip.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. The Ouachitas are the next range south of that hunt — same benches and leeward points — except the ridges run east-west, shortleaf pine owns the south faces, and one Forest Service boundary holds two state proclamations. A Saturday on Winona and a Saturday south of Heavener are not the same license. This is not Ottawa swamp edges and it is not the Ozark limestone hollers I grew up on, even though people mash the two ranges together on a map. National-forest how-to: hunting national forest land. Tag math stays on the state pages.
Two states, one green polygon
Buy the license for the dirt under your boots. Arkansas Game and Fish Commission seasons, tags, and WMA cards apply east of the line. Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation seasons, deer licenses, and WMA cards apply west of it. There is no Forest Service hunting fee. There is also no “I thought I was still in Arkansas” defense when a warden asks.
The calendars do not line up. For 2026–27, last checked September 7, 2026: Arkansas hill-country modern gun opens November 14. Oklahoma gun opens November 21. If you drive the Talimena Scenic Drive (Oklahoma Highway 1 / Arkansas Highway 88) on that first Arkansas Saturday, the Oklahoma side is still archery or leftover muzzleloader, not a rifle opener. Holiday antlerless gun is closed on the Ouachita WMA Le Flore Unit. It is not closed on the McCurtain and Tiak units. Read the card for the unit you parked in, not a screenshot from last year.
Oklahoma is the simpler ownership story: all National Forest System land in Le Flore and McCurtain sits inside Ouachita WMA. ODWC lists 221,559 acres on the Le Flore Unit and about 133,000 more on the McCurtain and Tiak units, managed with the Forest Service. Arkansas is the mixed bag: general forest, then cooperative WMAs (Winona, Caney Creek, Muddy Creek, and others) under a 1968 memorandum of understanding. WMA cards are tighter than the private-land zone around them. Winona’s 2026–27 modern-gun bag is three deer, no more than two antlered bucks, and one antlerless with alternative firearms or modern gun. Caney Creek’s one antlerless firearm deer is limited to alternative firearms or the first two days of modern gun. Both WMAs run a three-point rule. Confirm the current sheet on Winona WMA and Caney Creek WMA.
Terrain: east-west ridges, not Ozark hollers
Most ranges in this country run north-south. The Ouachitas do not. AGFC’s own Winona and Caney Creek descriptions say it out loud: ridges run east-west; hardwoods on the north and east faces; shortleaf pine on the south and west. That is the hunt. Acorns, greenbrier, and travel sit on the cool side. Pine needle carpets and a view sit on the sun side. If you hunt “pretty pines along the Talimena” you are hunting the postcard, not the deer.
Relief is a few hundred feet on a lot of these faces and more than that on Rich Mountain, the Forest’s high point at 2,681 feet. A ridge-top road hunt fails for the same reason it fails on Mark Twain and Daniel Boone: you skyline, you rattle gravel, and every truck on the two-track can see your orange. I hunt the places deer have to cross: a saddle that cuts an east-west spine (that is a north-south travel line), the first hardwood bench one-third down the north face, the brushy point where a pine bench dumps into a hardwood drain, and the leeward third of a face when the wind is up.
Food is mast and browse, plus the wildlife openings AGFC and ODWC actually mow. Winona lists about 109 food plots on rotation. Caney Creek lists about 135. The Le Flore Unit plants more than 400 acres of plots a year. I use those as age-class edges, not as a pin. If I can glass the plot from a Forest road, so can everyone else. Hunt the timber that feeds it. White oak drop under a single hot tree will pull deer until the caps go stale. Then they spread into mixed pine-hardwood and the 3- to 8-year regeneration off a cut. If acorns are everywhere, I hunt cover and saddles. If they are spotty, I hunt today’s caps. Timing sits is deer feeding times, then the ridge’s mast, not a moon chart.
The Forest has committed about 250,000 acres to shortleaf pine-bluestem restoration — thinning, midstory work, and fire on a 3- to 4-year cycle — for red-cockaded woodpecker habitat. Those open pine stands hunt like a glade: deer use the edge, not the middle of the burn you can see from Buffalo Road south of Waldron. Treat a fresh prescribed-burn block as an edge hunt the first season, then as bedding once the bluestem and oak sprouts thicken.
Districts, not one blob
Pick a district before you pick a motel. The Forest is not one continuous block, and the offices do not share a parking lot.
Jessieville–Winona–Fourche (8607 N Hwy 7, Jessieville, 501-984-5313). East end. Winona WMA, Flatside Wilderness, the trail toward Perryville. Hot Springs is the grocery. This is the first-timer district if you do not want a Talimena weekend.
Caddo–Womble (1523 Hwy 270 E, Mount Ida, 870-867-2101). About 310,000 acres. Lake Ouachita’s south shore. Mount Ida if you want a processor without sleeping in Hot Springs.
Mena–Oden (1603 Hwy 71 N, Mena, 479-394-2382). About 378,000 Forest Service acres in Montgomery, Polk, Scott, and Yell. Caney Creek and Black Fork Mountain wildernesses, Rich Mountain, east end of the Talimena. Mena is the high-country hub.
Poteau–Cold Springs (1541 AR-248, Waldron, 479-637-4174). Poteau Mountain and Dry Creek wildernesses, shortleaf-bluestem country. Scott, Logan, Sebastian, and Yell sit in Arkansas’s CWD Management Zone. Hunt here with a cooler plan, not a whole-carcass drive to Hot Springs.
Oklahoma Ranger District — Hodgen (52175 US-59, 918-653-2991) and Broken Bow (111 SH-259A, 580-494-6402). Le Flore Unit south of Heavener; McCurtain and Tiak toward Broken Bow. Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area (about 26,445 acres) wraps the Oklahoma Talimena. Cedar Lake, Billy Creek, and Winding Stair recreation areas are closed to hunting. McCurtain is an Oklahoma Selective Surveillance Area for CWD.
Access, parking, and opening weekend
Download the Motor Vehicle Use Map for the district you are hunting. A two-track that looks open on a phone basemap can be gated, seasonal, or a private driveway. Some Forest roads allow off-road travel to retrieve a downed deer or bear in October–December — only on the mapped side of the road, only 1/2 mile from centerline, only on Forest Service land. That is a retrieval rule, not a hunting-from-the-ATV rule. If the MVUM does not show it, do not do it.
November 14, 2026 is the Arkansas modern-gun opener. Every pull-off with a view of an oak flat on U.S. 270, Arkansas 7, or a Talimena overlook will have a truck in it. I do not race a headlamp to the first saddle. I park where it looks slightly wrong, walk past the first decent sign, and I want the last 200 yards steep, thick, or both. 0.6 to 1.5 miles is the band that starts to matter. The Ouachita National Recreation Trail runs 192 miles on the Forest, Talimena State Park near Talihina to Highway 9 south of Perryville, plus about 32 more miles to Pinnacle Mountain State Park. I treat that white-blazed tread like a road. Hikers and hunters share it.
Developed recreation sites are closed to hunting. So are posted closures. Walk-in turkey areas (Chinquapin Mountain, Deckard Mountain, Fourche Mountain, Hogan Mountain, Blue Mountain) are turkey tools in spring; in deer season they still tell you which spurs get gated. I do not hunt a trailhead lot on a Saturday in October and then complain about people.
Forest Order OA-ONF-07-2026 (June 26, 2026 through June 26, 2028): no baiting game with salt, grain, or feed anywhere on the Forest. Temporary stands in the general forest may stay 14 consecutive days, then must move at least 200 yards, and the owner’s name and address stay on the stand. WMA stand rules can be tighter. I run a hang-on and sticks because that is what the order allows and because I need to move when a two-track fills up.

Wind and thermals on an east-west face
A weather app that says “west 6 mph” is lying to you in a pine hollow. Because these ridges run east-west, a north wind hits the entire north face at once. A south wind does the same to the pine side. That is different from the Ozarks, where a west wind can be a crosswind on one holler and a tailwind on the next. Morning thermals crawl up the south and west faces first as the shortleaf warms. North faces stay cooler and hold frost. I hunt lower on the north face in the morning with a crosswind that dumps into a drain, and I hunt higher in the evening so falling air carries scent off the travel line. If the wind is switching every three minutes, I do not force a tree. I still-hunt damp leaves or I sit a bench where a bad swirl hits a cliff, a lake arm, or a posted inholding, not a bedding thicket.
That is the same thermal problem as Mark Twain and Daniel Boone, with a compass that actually matters. When I want a reminder of how deer use wind, I reread do deer move in the wind and then I still pick the leeward third of the ridge. Rain is a reason to hunt, not a reason to sit in Hot Springs. Wet leaves cover access. I slip the downwind edge of thick cover. Creek crossings on the Little Missouri and Cossatot can come up fast — Albert Pike is the proof, not folklore. Overnight camping at Albert Pike Recreation Area has been shut down since the June 11, 2010 flash flood that killed 20 people in that canyon. Check Forest alerts before you treat any rec-site camping line in an old WMA write-up as current. Bard Springs has been posted temporarily closed. The river named Cossatot is not a beginner float. I do not hunt a gravel bar after a night of rain and call it a travel corridor.
Season notes versus statewide Arkansas and Oklahoma
Do not copy the whole state table onto this page. Archery windows, bags, and nonresident cost bands live on the Arkansas and Oklahoma guides. What changes on Ouachita dirt:
- Baiting is banned on the Forest at all times under the Forest Order — corn, minerals, “just this once” piles. Arkansas still allows private-land baiting outside the CWD zone, and limited baiting inside it. That private-land conversation does not help you here. Oklahoma already bans bait on department-managed land. Salt or mineral blocks are a separate ODWC line; the Forest Order still says salt that could lure game is bait. I hunt without a pile.
- Dogs. Forest Service: hunting with dogs is not allowed on the WMAs managed with AGFC or ODWC. It is still allowed on the general forest area of the Ouachita in Arkansas where the zone card allows dog-deer (typically Zones 7, 10, 11 and neighbors, during the listed modern-gun dates; nonresidents only in the last nine days). Winona and Caney Creek are no-dogs for deer. Oklahoma: dogs cannot be used to take deer, period. A leashed tracking dog after the shot is a different rule — Arkansas and Oklahoma both allow it with conditions. If you hear hounds on a Saturday in late November on Arkansas general forest, sit the downwind side of the push. Do not invent a dog hunt on a WMA that forbids it.
- Hunter orange. Arkansas: 400 square inches above the waist plus a head garment during modern gun or alternative firearms deer (chartreuse or blaze camo counts). Oklahoma: head covering plus an outer garment above the waist, 400 square inches, during firearm deer. Archers on days a gun season is open need orange on the Oklahoma side. Sunday hunting is legal in both states.
- CWD is not “somewhere else in the Ozarks.” Scott, Logan, Sebastian, and Yell — Poteau–Cold Springs and the north edge of Mena–Oden — sit in Arkansas’s CWD Management Zone. Sevier County, on the southwest shoulder of Caney Creek country, joins that zone July 1, 2026. Grant County also joins that date; it is not this Forest, but it is the same map. You cannot haul a whole carcass out of the zone. Deboned meat, a clean skull plate, hide, and finished taxidermy can leave. McCurtain County, Oklahoma, is an SSA: process the deer before you leave the area. If a deer looks sick, skinny, or oddly tame, use CWD symptoms and how to get your deer tested for CWD.
- Antler rules tighten on the WMAs. Three-point on Winona and Caney Creek. Inside the Arkansas CWD zone, antler-point restrictions come off. Button bucks count as antlerless but still get checked as button bucks. Oklahoma antlered means 3 inches of antler above the hairline. Do not mix those definitions at the state line.
Where to sit without dropping a pin
I will not give you a GPS coordinate. I will give you spot types you can repeat after you look at the MVUM and the paint.
North-face hardwood bench off an east-west ridge road. 400 to 900 yards, last stretch ugly. Set up 20 to 40 yards off the bench on the downhill side so scent dumps below the travel line. This is the Mark Twain sit, rotated onto a compass that actually runs east-west.
Saddle that cuts the spine. Not the lowest, cleanest gap on the map. The one with greenbrier, blowdowns, or a rock jumble on one side that makes people groan. That gap is how a deer moves from a north-face bed to a south-face oak without skylining. Rut sit. Light grunt, not a rattling concert — you will call in orange before you call in a buck near a Talimena overlook.
First thick pine or cutover off easy access during gun week. When shots start at 7:05 a.m., deer dive into the nastiest regeneration, not off Queen Wilhelmina’s porch. Hunt the downwind edge of that mess, 40 to 120 yards off, not in the middle of it.
Winona or Caney Creek interior, not the plot you can glass from the road. Three-point rule. No dogs. Tighter antlerless. Walk past the first food plot. Flatside Wilderness (about 10,000 acres, closest wilderness to Little Rock) is the east-end “go farther” play if Jessieville two-tracks are a parking lot. Pack-out is real.
Oklahoma Le Flore, off Highway 59 or the Talimena, last 200 yards steep. Holiday antlerless is closed here. Cedar Lake and Winding Stair rec sites are closed to hunting, which also tells you where people cluster. Upper Kiamichi River Wilderness (Oklahoma) and Black Fork Mountain Wilderness (the state line, 8,430 acres in Arkansas and 5,149 in Oklahoma) are the roadless version. Mechanized equipment stays out. If you shoot deep, you are quartering.
Public-land tactics that work on any of these sits live on how to hunt public land deer. If you are still deciding whether this Forest is worth the walk versus a lease, that split is public land vs lease deer hunting. These are white-tailed deer in timber. Most honest shots are inside 80 yards; a lot of the good bow shots are inside 30. That is a shot placement problem, not a courage problem.
If you are not hunting
The same land is a trip if the wind dies or you brought family. Talimena Scenic Drive is 54 miles of ridge between Mena and Talihina — views, not a deer sit on a Saturday in leaf season. Queen Wilhelmina State Park sits on Rich Mountain. The Ouachita Trail is the long walk. Lake Ouachita and Lake Greeson are the boat option; Corps tracts around those lakes are a different hunting rule set — Army Corps land for deer — not a same-morning backup from a Forest two-track. Hot Springs holds the Supervisor’s Office if you need a map. If you hit a deer on U.S. 270, start at what to do if you hit a deer. OHV riders, leaf-peepers, and opening-weekend trucks share this Forest. Hunt like it.
Where to stay, ice, and the meat pole
Pick a base for the district you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery that is open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet clothes. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before, twice if October is still 80 degrees. Call a processor before you shoot. Ask if they take CWD-zone or SSA deer, and when you can actually pick up meat. In a CWD county I assume I am deboning in the field unless a staffed station says otherwise.
Hot Springs, AR — Supervisor’s Office, grocery, rooms, Jessieville–Winona access without sleeping on the mountain. The east-end base if a recovery turns into a highway run.
Mena, AR — Talimena east end, Caney Creek, Black Fork, Rich Mountain. Real town. Closest honest hub to the high country.
Mount Ida, AR — Caddo–Womble, U.S. 270 spine, Lake Ouachita. Quieter than Hot Springs. Cook in the cabin.
Poteau, OK — Ouachita–Le Flore gateway. Heavener and Talihina access, grocery, rooms. Different license than Mena. Do not treat it as a same-morning hop from Hot Springs.
Broken Bow, OK — McCurtain and Tiak units, Three Rivers timber backup, SSA cooler plan. Closer to the south Oklahoma block than Poteau is.
A straight-up drag up a pine slope is a bad plan. I side-hill to a ridge road even if it adds a third of a mile. I process my own deer in the garage, taught by my uncle who was a butcher, and I still call a shop when I am 1.1 miles in on a north face. Field work is how to field dress a deer. Shot angles on a sidehill are why I reread shot placement and the after the shot hub before I climb. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her. I wait now. Tag and check-in: how to tag a deer — Arkansas wants the harvest in the system within 12 hours; Oklahoma uses Go Outdoors Oklahoma E-Check. Hill-country deer run lighter than corn-fed Illinois deer, so I size coolers with how much meat from a deer.
Find a field boning knife on Amazon Amazon associate tag checkcheck-20. We may earn a commission.
If this Forest is slammed
If every U.S. 270 two-track has a truck at 5 a.m., I do not drive home. I go to a nastier access on the same district, I hunt a wilderness drain midweek, or I slide to the other state’s block only if I already bought that license. I do not invent a secret WMA. Three Rivers and Honobia Creek are Oklahoma timber-company WMAs next door — Land Access Permit required, different map, the hunt described on timber company land in the South. They are not a same-morning backup from Mount Ida. If I need deer on the ground, I leave the mountains and hunt a farm-edge WMA on a weekday — that plan is on the state pages, not here. Neighboring woods we already cover: Ozarks public land, Mark Twain, overlooked Missouri Ozarks public. Ozark-St. Francis National Forest is the other Arkansas national forest; it does not have a dedicated WorldDeer unit URL yet, so use the Arkansas state page and the Ozark-St. Francis Forest Service map instead of a 404. Coming from out of state, read planning an out-of-state deer hunt before you book a cabin around November 14.
Wildlife that actually lives here
Black bears use this Forest in both states. I hang food, I do not leave gut piles at a trailhead, and I do not pretend a snapped stick is always a deer. Overlap: do black bears eat deer. Camp habits: how to deal with black bears. Eastern wild turkey and the shortleaf-bluestem bird community (red-cockaded woodpecker) use the same burns I hunt as edges. Feral hogs are an invasive you might see; they are not why I drove here. Habitat notes: deer habitat.
FAQ
Do I need a draw tag to hunt deer on Ouachita National Forest?
No. Arkansas: a hunting license plus the deer tags that come with it, then the WMA card if you are on Winona, Caney Creek, or Muddy Creek. Oklahoma: base hunting license plus a deer license for each season you hunt (archery, muzzleloader, gun). Some overlapping Oklahoma timber WMAs need a Land Access Permit. Ouachita WMA itself does not. Elk is not a deer tag. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is not this Forest.
Can I hunt the Oklahoma side on Arkansas’s November 14 opener?
Not with a rifle. Oklahoma gun season opens November 21, 2026. You need an Oklahoma deer license on Oklahoma dirt. The Talimena is a pretty drive, not a two-state cheat code.
Is baiting legal on the Forest?
No. Forest Order OA-ONF-07-2026 bans salt, grain, or feed used to lure game. WMAs already ban bait. Private land outside the proclamation boundary is a different rule and is not this hunt.
Can I hunt with dogs?
On Arkansas general forest, only where the zone card allows it, and not on the cooperative WMAs. On Oklahoma NF land, no. Tracking a hit deer with a leashed dog is a separate, legal-after-the-shot conversation in both states.
How far do I need to walk?
I start taking it seriously at about 0.6 miles, and I feel better at 1.0 to 1.5 miles if the last stretch is steep or thick. Easy Talimena or Highway 7 walking does not count as distance. If the walk is pleasant the whole way, expect company.
What about CWD if I kill a deer in Scott County or McCurtain County?
Plan the head and the cooler before you shoot. Arkansas CWD Management Zone rules apply in Scott, Logan, Sebastian, Yell, and (as of July 1, 2026) Sevier. McCurtain is an Oklahoma SSA. Do not drive a whole carcass out of those areas. Details move — the AGFC CWD page and the ODWC SSA page win.

I am not a guide. I am a public-land hunter who has eaten tag soup on more than one ridge. Pick a district, hunt a north-face bench or a nasty cover edge off the easy two-track, stay off the Talimena postcard at daylight, and keep a grocery and a processor in the same state as your tag. When you get a shot, slow down, make it count, and side-hill the deer out. Index: deer hunting by state. Public versus a paid farm: public land vs lease. North-woods public is a different sport — Chequamegon.
