Pennsylvania vs Ohio Deer Hunting

Updated on September 7, 2026. Season dates, bag limits, and Disease Surveillance Area lines move. Confirm Pennsylvania on the Game Commission seasons page and Ohio in the 2026–27 ODNR hunting regulations before you buy a tag or hang a stand.

If you want two weeks of legal centerfire on real public woods — State Game Lands, state forest, and Allegheny National Forest — hunt Pennsylvania.

If you want four months of archery, farm-edge deer, and a nine-day gun season with a straight-wall cartridge, hunt Ohio.

I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting broke on public dirt with my dad in southern Missouri, and I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and Missouri public land. Pennsylvania and Ohio sit next to each other and feel like different sports: public-land rifle culture versus a long bow season, a short straight-wall gun week, and more “ask a farmer” than “walk a hunter road.” Both are white-tailed deer only.

Parent hubs: deer hunting by state and Places. Statewide trip plans live on Pennsylvania deer hunting and Ohio deer hunting. I am not inventing a Wayne National Forest child URL — that hunt belongs under hunting national forest land and the Ohio page until a unit page exists.

Decision Pennsylvania Ohio
2025–26 harvest 505,600 estimated (185,310 antlered, 320,290 antlerless). Regular firearms took 299,230. PGC harvest release 232,142 checked. Archery 104,731; weeklong gun 85,448; two-day gun 15,835. Seventh-highest on record. ODNR 2025–26 season report
Habitat 22 Wildlife Management Units. Big-woods plateau (Allegheny, north-central), oak ridges, and suburban southeast. 1.5 million acres of State Game Lands plus 2.2 million acres of DCNR state forest. County bag-limit map, not WMUs. Farm-woodlot edges, Coshocton-style rolling ag, and smaller public blocks (Woodbury Wildlife Area, Wayne National Forest). More permission hunting than forest walking.
Tags and 2026–27 window OTC. Adult license includes one antlered tag ($20.97 resident / $101.97 nonresident). Antlerless $6.97 / $26.97 by WMU. Statewide archery Oct. 3–Nov. 20, 2026 and Dec. 26–Jan. 24, 2027. Regular firearms Nov. 28–Dec. 13, 2026. Sundays are in the deer seasons this year. PGC license types OTC. Resident hunting license $18 plus deer permit $30; nonresident hunting $174 plus deer permit $210 (Ohio Revised Code 1533.10 / 1533.11). Statewide archery Sept. 26, 2026–Feb. 7, 2027. Gun Nov. 30–Dec. 6 and Dec. 19–20. Muzzleloader Jan. 2–5, 2027. One antlered deer. Statewide cap six. ORC deer permit fees
Pressure Firearms Saturday after Thanksgiving is a holiday. SGL pull-offs and Allegheny hunter roads fill before daylight. Midweek and late archery are quieter. Gun week is the crowd. Public land caps you at two antlerless from all public hunting areas combined. Private farm edges hold the deer people actually see.
Who it is for A hunter who will walk past the first 400 yards, buy the right WMU antlerless license, and hunt a two-week rifle season with a real centerfire. A hunter who will knock on doors, sit a crossbow or straight-wall on a field edge, and use the long archery calendar. Not a public-land rifle destination.
Stay Base on the woods you will actually hunt: Bradford, Warren, or Kane for Allegheny; skip Harrisburg if you are hunting 2F. Base on the county bag you bought: Coshocton for the farm belt, Marietta for Wayne country, Athens only if that county’s 2026 bag still makes sense after the 2025 EHD hit.

Three differences that actually change the trip

1. Pennsylvania has the public woods. Ohio has the farm edge.

This is the decision. Pennsylvania Game Lands are a statewide public-hunting system — over 1.5 million acres — and DCNR adds 2.2 million acres of state forest. Allegheny is the national-forest version of that: plateau, benches, hunter roads, and Pennsylvania’s only USFS deer hunt. How to hunt that dirt without inventing a pin is on the Allegheny spots page. If you want oak ridges instead of cherry plateau, start at Pennsylvania state forests (Tuscarora is the honest pick there). The method is the same as any crowded public: walk past the first pretty parking lot. That is how to hunt public land deer and the public land hub.

Ohio is not that map. The live Ohio page is right to name Woodbury Wildlife Area (~19,000 acres) as a real public block. Wayne National Forest is the only national forest in the state, and it hunts more like cutover hills and private inholdings than a 500,000-acre plateau. There is no live Wayne child URL, so I am not making one. Appalachian forest context is Appalachian national forests. The rule that changes an Ohio public trip: no more than two antlerless deer from all public hunting areas for the year, and no baiting on those areas. Coshocton County checked 8,527 deer in 2025–26 — 24th straight year leading the state — and those deer live on private farms. If you do not have permission, you are hunting leftover public while the neighbors hunt the beans. How to ask lives on how to find permission to hunt private land.

2. Two weeks of centerfire versus nine gun days and a four-month bow season.

Pennsylvania regular firearms 2026 is Nov. 28 through Dec. 13. That is a two-week concurrent antlered/antlerless rifle season in most of the state, and for 2026–27 the Game Commission put every Sunday inside the deer seasons (migratory birds stay closed). Special Regulations Areas in the southeast still cut you to shotgun, slug, and archery — do not show up in 2B or 5D with a .30-06 because a western PA camp did. Everywhere else, a hunting rifle is legal. That is why Pennsylvania’s firearms season still takes the majority of the harvest (299,230 of 505,600 last year).

Ohio does not give you that rifle. Gun season is a week (Nov. 30–Dec. 6, 2026) plus a two-day bonus (Dec. 19–20). Legal firearms are shotgun, muzzleloader, handgun, and straight-walled cartridge rifles — not a bottleneck .270. Straight-walls already take about a third of Ohio’s harvest (78,395 of 232,142 in 2025–26), neck-and-neck with crossbows (77,938). If you are buying a gun for this trip, the child page is best straight wall cartridge for deer in Ohio — .350 Legend for most people, .450 Bushmaster if you want more punch inside 150 yards. Ohio pays you back on the calendar the other way: statewide archery runs Sept. 26, 2026 through Feb. 7, 2027. That is four-plus months. Pennsylvania archery is October through mid-November, then a late window after Christmas. If your only free weeks are January, Ohio is the hunt. If you want a traditional rifle camp the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Pennsylvania is the hunt.

3. The nonresident bill is not close.

Pennsylvania’s nonresident adult hunting license is $101.97 and it already includes the antlered deer tag. Add archery ($26.97) and one antlerless license ($26.97) and you are still around $156 before writing fees. Ohio’s nonresident hunting license is $174 and the either-sex deer permit is $210. That is $384 before a $15 deer-management permit. ODNR’s 2025–26 report shows Pennsylvania led Ohio nonresident license sales (6,768). I will spend the extra Ohio money for a farm I can actually hunt in January. I will not spend it to sit Woodbury on gun-week Saturday next to three other out-of-state trucks. Confirm current carts on HuntFishPA and HuntFish Ohio — writing fees move.

CWD, bait, and the other rules that wreck a weekend

Both states have Chronic Wasting Disease. Pennsylvania has been managing to it for years; most of the 22 WMUs had a reduce objective in 2025–26, and extra antlerless licenses were part of why the harvest hit 505,600. Ohio’s 2025–26 testing found 40 CWD-positive deer out of 6,617 samples in Allen, Crawford, Hancock, Hardin, Marion, and Wyandot counties. The Disease Surveillance Area gets an earlier archery opener (Sept. 12, 2026) and an early gun weekend (Oct. 10–12). Baiting and mineral sites are illegal inside that DSA. Statewide, Ohio still allows baiting on private land outside the DSA; it is illegal on Division of Wildlife public hunting areas. Pennsylvania baiting is illegal except in the Southeast Special Regulations Area on private (and now federal) land, with its own corn-and-feeder rules. Do not mix the two states in your head. Symptoms and what to do with the head are on CWD deer symptoms and how to get your deer tested for CWD.

Ohio’s southeast is a different disease problem. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease crushed the 2025–26 harvest in Athens, Meigs, Morgan, and Washington counties — 4,289 deer checked versus 15,659 the year before. The 2026–27 bag in Athens, Meigs, and Washington is two deer, no more than one antlerless. I would not build a “giant southeast Ohio bucks” trip on last decade’s memory.

Road miles matter on both sides of the line. Dawn and dusk on I-80, I-79, I-70, and I-77 still kill deer. If you hit one, what to do if you hit a deer is the page, not a Facebook group.

If you are choosing a trip

Pick the hunt, then pick the town. I would not sleep in Columbus to hunt Coshocton, and I would not sleep in Pittsburgh to hunt Kane. Drive time to the lot, a grocery open after dark, a processor who answers on Sunday, and late checkout on opening morning beat a pretty lobby. Mix a motel and a cabin.

Bradford, PA — North end of Allegheny. Food, rooms, and a processor within range of the Bradford Ranger District hunter roads.

Warren, PA — West-side gateway to the forest and the river. Shorter hop if you are coming up I-79.

Kane, PA — Central forest. Best if you are bouncing 2F and 2G and do not want to commit to Bradford’s north end.

Coshocton, OH — The farm-belt harvest capital. Stay here if you have permission in Coshocton, Tuscarawas, or Holmes, not because the town is pretty.

Marietta, OH — Ohio River / Wayne National Forest access. Grocery and rooms without sitting in Columbus. Confirm the county bag; this is not a two-week rifle camp.

Athens, OH — Southeast public and Wayne country, but treat 2026 as an EHD recovery year. Two-deer bag in Athens County. I would rather have a named farm than a wildlife-area parking lot here.

When I time a sit I still check deer feeding times, then I let the landscape change the food: cherry mast and benches on Allegheny, waste grain and woodlot edges in Coshocton. Wind on a dissected plateau is not the same as wind on a flat Ohio ridge — do deer move in the wind is the physics. After a hit, field dressing and the after the shot hub matter more than which state logo is on the tag.

FAQ

Is Pennsylvania or Ohio better for a nonresident public-land hunt?

Pennsylvania. The license is cheaper, centerfire rifles are legal in most WMUs, firearms season is two weeks, and the public map is larger. Ohio caps you at two antlerless from all public hunting areas combined, gun season is nine days, and bottleneck rifles are out.

Can I hunt both states on one long weekend?

You can drive it. I would not. Two licenses, two tag systems, two CWD carcass rules. A Saturday in Kane and a Monday in Coshocton is two trips that share an interstate. Pick a state and stay in it.

Which state has more deer?

Pennsylvania harvested more than twice as many in 2025–26 (505,600 vs 232,142). That is more hunters, more public land, and a longer gun season, not a promise you will see more deer from a SGL parking lot. Ohio’s Coshocton farm country still produces the kind of daylight field-edge deer Pennsylvania big woods often hide until dark.

Do I need a straight-wall cartridge in Pennsylvania?

No, except in Special Regulations Areas where the gun is a shotgun/slug problem anyway. Bring the straight-wall to Ohio. Pennsylvania wants a hunting rifle in most of the state and a slug gun in the southeast suburbs.
