Who this place is for
If you want public dirt you can walk without a handshake, hunt the Ozarks and accept smaller-bodied deer, steep drags, and trucks on the easy gravel.
If you want Illinois antlers or a Saturday you can cover in sneakers, pick a different trip. This is ridge-and-hollow country.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. Back in November 1998 in Iron County I killed my first deer, an 8-point, with a borrowed rifle. I grew up broke, so I learned public land before I ever paid for a lease, and I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois, and these hills. The Ozarks are the home hunt. They are not Ottawa swamp edges and they are not a Pike County bean field. Mixing those hunts up is how you burn a November.

Terrain, and how deer actually use it
The Ozarks are not one forest. They are a dissected plateau: oak-hickory ridges, chert and dolomite, cedar pockets, glades, and hollows that dump into springs. The Forest Service notes the Missouri Ozarks hold the world’s largest collection of first-magnitude springs — more than 65 million gallons a day — which is why a “dry” creek on your phone can be a wet scent dump by 9 a.m. Karst means disappearing streams, sinkholes, and a thermal that does not read like a Wisconsin hardwood ridge.
Deer here live in pockets, not in a sea of corn. White oak acorns flip a week. When mast is on, they feed a hot tree and bed the first cedar or greenbrier tangle that has a back door. When mast is off, they browse cedar, honeysuckle, and the edge of a two-year-old cut. I do not still-hunt pretty oaks all day and hope. I pick a saddle, a bench one-third down the leeward slope, or the first brushy point off the ridge spine — then I only sit there if I can explain why a deer would walk it at 8:10 a.m.
Shots are timber shots. Most honest ones are inside 80 yards. A lot of the good bow shots are inside 30. Do not pack a 280-yard mule setup onto White Rock and then blame Arkansas. Refresh shot placement and the after the shot hub before you climb. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her. Ozark cover swallows a bad hit.
Public systems that actually matter

- Mark Twain National Forest — about 1,485,800 acres in nine units across 29 southern and central Missouri counties. About 84% of the state’s publicly owned forest. No Forest Service hunting fee. MDC seasons apply. Federal ownership inside the proclamation averages about 49% — as low as 24% on Cedar Creek, as high as 71% on Doniphan/Eleven Point — so purple paint and posted signs are the boundary, not the green on your phone. Portable stands only, labeled with your name and address. Do not shoot within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, or developed site. Hunt 400 to 900 yards off the easy two-track; last 200 yards wet or steep.
- Wilderness inside Mark Twain — foot or horse. Irish Wilderness is 16,277 acres in Oregon County, the largest in Missouri, with the 18.6-mile Whites Creek Trail and a high black-bear concentration the Forest Service itself flags. Hercules-Glades is 12,413 acres, about 10 miles northeast of Branson: glade and grassland, not just oak. Bell Mountain is 9,143 acres in the St. Francois Mountains. Paddy Creek is 7,035 acres in Texas County, southwest of Rolla. These are not “secret.” They are a different walk. Confirm the current wilderness order before you hang a stand.
- Overlooked Ozarks Conservation Areas — mid-size, odd-shaped MDC tracts most trucks skip on the way to a famous name. Indian Trail Conservation Area is 13,503 acres in northeast Dent County between Salem and Steelville: glades, chert savannas, food plots, Highway 19 entrance. I hunt the far side of the first ridge, not the lot. Peck Ranch is 29,567 acres in Shannon and Carter counties. Elk restoration core. The refuge interior is managed deer hunts (youth, archery, muzzleloader) by drawing. The exterior hunts under statewide seasons. Do not walk in assuming the whole ranch is November OTC.
- Ozark National Scenic Riverways — NPS land on the Current and Jacks Fork where hunting is actually allowed, unlike most parks. MDC seasons apply. Hunting is closed at Alley Spring, Big Spring, and Round Spring (old state-park boundaries) and within 300 yards of developed areas, roads, trails, and public facilities. Confirm stand and camera rules on the ONSR hunting page before you hang anything. Van Buren and Eminence are the river towns.
- Ozark-St. Francis National Forests — the Forest Service’s own welcome page calls it 1.2 million acres, headquarters in Russellville. No dedicated Ozark NF URL is live here, so use this page, the Arkansas state guide, and the Forest Service map. Hunting is allowed except in developed rec sites and AGFC-closed ground. White Rock WMA sits inside that proclamation — AGFC lists 328,836 acres on the area card, with archery, alternative firearms (Oct. 17–25, 2026), and modern gun Nov. 14–Dec. 6 plus Dec. 26–28. Big Piney Ranger District is about 496,000 acres. Hunt 0.8 to 1.6 miles off the easy two-track.
- Buffalo National River WMA — 95,730 acres in Baxter, Marion, Newton, and Searcy counties. NPS plus AGFC Zone 080. Free annual WMA General Use Permit (WMP) required. CWD rules apply. No hunting in developed zones; stay 50 yards off residences and 100 feet off maintained roads. You may not shoot across, into, or from the river or its gravel bars. - Corps of Engineers timber — Table Rock, Bull Shoals, Norfork, and the smaller Ozark lakes. Overlooked ribbons of timber near town. Rules are not Forest Service rules. Start at how to hunt Army Corps of Engineers land for deer.
Southern timber-company programs exist on the Arkansas and Missouri edges. They are not this hunt. If that is the access you actually have, use deer hunting timber company land in the South.
Access, parking, and opening weekend
I open a map and mark every parking pad, gated road, and ridge-top trail within two miles before I ever hang a stand. Then I pick the hard side: no clean trail, a steep climb, a bad drag. Missouri’s November portion is a cultural event. MDC staff have said about a third of the four-month harvest happens those first two days. Arkansas’s modern-gun opener is the same circus on White Rock gravel. That is not a reason to stay home. It is a reason to hunt 400 to 900 yards off the lot in Missouri timber, or 0.8 to 1.6 miles in Arkansas forest, and to sit Tuesday through Thursday if you can take the days.
Inholdings will wreck a loop. On Mark Twain I treat purple paint as a wall. A wounded deer does not give you permission to cross it. Get a phone number or eat the loss. On Buffalo River ground, private inholdings and use-and-occupancy reservations are closed. On Indian Trail, the Highway 19 lot fills; the interior gravel does not make the far ridge empty if you still walk the pretty road.
Wind and thermals
Hollows swirl. Cold air sinks at first light and rides the drainage like water. I do not walk the bottom at daylight and I do not sit the skyline on a calm morning. I pick setups where a bad swirl dumps into a creek, a glade, or dead space — not into the bed. Same lesson as do deer move in the wind, just rockier. I wasted money on $400 ozone scent control that made zero difference in Iron County cedar. Wind and access beat gadgets.
My sweet spot is usually one-third down from the ridge top: above the sinking air, below the gusts. On a 15 mph day I expect more sidehill travel and less skyline movement. On a 67-degree November afternoon — I sat that in 2021 — I hunt a shaded north slope that stays damp. When I time movement I check deer feeding times, then I let mast, not the app, pick the tree.
Season notes versus statewide
Do not copy the whole Missouri or Arkansas table onto this page. What changes here:
- Two licenses. A Missouri Firearms Any-Deer permit does not hunt White Rock. An Arkansas annual license does not hunt Mark Twain. Nonresident Missouri any-deer is $360 in 2026; nonresident Arkansas annual hunting is $410. You cannot hop the state line at lunch.
- CWD carcasses. Missouri mandatory sampling for 2026 is Nov. 14–15 in 28 rotating counties. Ozark names on that list include Carter, Iron, Oregon, Reynolds, Ripley, Shannon, and Wayne. Stations run 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Field dress and Telecheck first. Arkansas CWD started in Newton County in 2016; the management zone now covers the north Ozarks, and Grant and Sevier were added July 1, 2026. - Bait and dogs. Missouri: hunting with bait is illegal statewide; an area stays baited 10 days after removal. Dogs may not hunt deer; a leashed tracking dog after a hit is legal. Arkansas Ozark and most northern zones do not allow dogs for deer. WMAs are closed to deer dogs unless the card says otherwise. Buffalo River: chase for pleasure and dog training are not allowed.
- Stands. Mark Twain: portable, labeled, no screw-in steps that damage trees. Peck Ranch: portable Sept. 1–Jan. 31, labeled, out by Feb. 1. ONSR and Buffalo: read the park page the week you leave — developed-area setbacks are the thing that gets people tickets.
Where to sit without dropping a pin
I will not publish a GPS honey hole. I will tell you the three spot types that keep working on both sides of the line.
Secondary saddles — not the obvious gap between the two highest points on the map. A low notch that connects a thick ridge finger to the next one. Sit 30 to 60 yards off the lowest point on the downwind side.
Benches that pinch — rocks, a blowdown line, or a cedar wall that forces travel to one side. One-third down. If the bench is a hallway everyone can see from the ridge road, keep walking.
The first brushy point off the ridge — deer bed on the point and slide the sides without skylining. I set up on the downwind outside edge of cedar or greenbrier and watch the first trail that exits toward acorns. In 2013 on Mark Twain I pushed into a cedar point at 1:30 p.m. and jumped a buck that sounded like a horse. I never saw him again that season.
If you want doe action with a kid, hunt closer to a white oak flat and accept company. If you want a mature buck on public, sit closer to bedding and accept a 12-minute window. In 2022 I took my oldest into a “good enough” close spot; we saw four does and a yearling before dark. That was the right hunt for a kid. It was not where the oldest buck in that hollow lived.
If you are not hunting
The same map is a hiking and river map. Irish Wilderness and Hercules-Glades are overnight backpack trips when you are not in orange. The Current and Jacks Fork at Ozark National Scenic Riverways, and the Buffalo on the Arkansas side, are the reason towns have canoe liveries in October. Greer Crossing on the Eleven Point is a year-round camp if you want to float and hunt different days of the same week. West Plains has grocery and a hospital. Harrison sits under Buffalo River country. Branson is 10 miles from Hercules-Glades and is a weather-out town, not a hunting base I would book on purpose for Nov. 14.
Wear hunter orange if you hike during firearms season. River gravel bars and trails are not closed just because you are not hunting. Identify a target. A white sweatshirt on a gravel bar has gotten people yelled at for a reason.
Where to stay, ice, and a processor
Pick a base for the side of the highlands you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet clothes.
West Plains, MO — south Missouri Ozarks and Howell County harvest country. MDC Ozark regional office is here. Cook in the cabin. Opening weekend motels fill.
Rolla, MO — I-44 and north Mark Twain. Grocery, rooms, and a processor backup if the weather dies. Short drive toward Salem-side Indian Trail.
Potosi, MO — northeast Mark Twain and the Iron County hills I grew up hunting. Quieter than Rolla. Confirm a processor before you shoot.
Doniphan, MO — Eleven Point and Irish Wilderness country. Small town. Plan ice the night before. Cell service dies in the wilderness.
Mountain Home, AR — northeast Arkansas Ozarks, Norfork and White River, Corps timber if the forest lots fill. Cabin country.
Harrison, AR — north Arkansas Ozarks and Buffalo River / Newton County CWD ground. Confirm carcass rules before you drive a deer south or into Missouri.
Call a processor before you shoot, especially for Nov. 14–15. Ozark shops book. Ask two questions: are you taking CWD-area deer, and when can I actually pick up meat. I process my own deer in the garage when I can, taught by my uncle who was a butcher. On a road trip I still want a backup shop and a cooler plan. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before, twice if archery is still 80 degrees. A Mark Twain drag through greenbrier can be 900 yards of pain. I bone quarters in contractor bags before I try to be a hero on a 40-degree slope. The hardware-store climbing sticks, about $35, have put me in more Ozark trees than any boutique carbon set. Tag it, then check it. How to tag a deer is the mechanics. Missouri wants Telecheck before the deer leaves the county of harvest or by 10 p.m. the day of harvest, whichever comes first. Arkansas wants the harvest in the system within 12 hours. Field work is how to field dress a deer. Ozark public-land deer run lighter than corn-fed Illinois deer, so I size coolers with how much meat from a deer. If the Mark Twain gravel pad looks like a Black Friday sale, I do not drive to a made-up second forest page. I hunt a nastier access on the same district, or I slide to Indian Trail on a weekday. If White Rock’s first lot is full at 5 a.m., I go farther on the same forest or I sit a Corps tract midweek — I do not invent an Ozark NF child URL. Arkansas is not a same-morning backup from Rolla. Daniel Boone in Kentucky is the sibling ridge hunt if you are building a multi-state year. Ottawa and Chequamegon are the big-woods contrast, not a Saturday Plan B from West Plains.
Suburban hostas on the edge of these towns are a different deer. If you only have a backyard problem in Springfield or Fayetteville, that is do deer eat hostas, not a national-forest sit.
Wildlife of this place
Black bears use the same oak ridges, especially around Irish Wilderness. I hang food, I do not treat a popped-corn pile as a deer sit, and I keep a clean camp. Elk live at Peck Ranch and in the Buffalo highlands. That is a viewing drive or a separate limited hunt, not a deer tag. Timber rattlesnakes and copperheads are real on glades in October. I watch my hands on rocky benches. Feral hogs are a Forest Service problem on Mark Twain — report them, do not freelance a hog hunt on a deer tag unless the current order says you can.
FAQ
Is Ozarks public land in Missouri or Arkansas?
Both. The hills do not stop at the state line. The license does. Hunt Mark Twain and Missouri Conservation Areas on an MDC permit. Hunt Ozark-St. Francis, White Rock, and Buffalo River WMA on an AGFC license plus any WMA permit the card requires.
Do I need a draw tag?
Regular Missouri archery and firearms any-deer permits are OTC. Regular Arkansas deer licenses are OTC. Managed hunts at Peck Ranch and some WMA firearm hunts still draw. Elk is a different lottery.
Where should a first-timer go?
If you need to see deer, hunt a Conservation Area or Corps edge on a weekday and take a legal antlerless deer. If you want a woods trip, hunt Mark Twain with the bench-and-pressure plan on the Mark Twain guide and do not expect Illinois numbers. If you are coming from the south, White Rock is the Arkansas version of that same saddle-and-bench hunt.
Can I hunt Sunday?
Yes in Missouri. Arkansas Sunday hunting follows the zone and WMA card — confirm the current guidebook. Wear hunter orange during firearms portions in Missouri (hat plus shirt, vest, or coat; camo orange does not count).
What about bait?
Not in Missouri. Not as a deer-hunting method on these Arkansas WMAs unless the current card says otherwise, and Buffalo River forbids baiting. I hunt without a pile.

I am not a guide. I am a public-land hunter who grew up in these hills and has eaten tag soup on more than one Conservation Area. Pick the Missouri side or the Arkansas side on purpose, hunt fresh sign off the easy access, and stay near a grocery and a processor. When a buck slips that bench at 9:12 a.m., slow down, make it count, and enjoy the drag.
