Who this forest is for
If you want Great Lakes shoreline, jack pine and cedar in the same week, and a public-land deer you will drag, hunt Hiawatha — and pick East or West before you book a cabin.
If you want one continuous million-acre block of cedar-hemlock and lake-effect snow against the Wisconsin line, hunt Ottawa instead. Hiawatha is not Ottawa with a different sign.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I grew up broke, so I learned public land before I ever paid for a lease, and I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. The UP is the trip I take when I want snow tracks and room to walk. Hiawatha is the one I take when I am coming across the Mackinac Bridge and I am honest about drive time. Treating the East unit as “the same woods as Munising” is how you burn a Saturday on I-75 sand and sit in empty plantation pine.
This is a meat-and-tracks hunt. You will see fewer deer than a southern Lower Peninsula state game area. Shot windows in cedar and jack pine are 15 to 40 yards. If you need 12 sightings a sit, stay south of the bridge.
Two zones, four districts — pick one
The Forest Service is blunt: Hiawatha is two zones in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. They do not share a parking lot. Ironwood to St. Ignace on US-2 is a half-day. Munising to Sault Ste. Marie is not an evening sit. Book the town that matches the district, or you will hunt from a motel you already paid for.
West Zone — Munising Ranger District (400 E. Munising Avenue, Munising, 906-387-2512). Sandstone, aspen cuts, cedar drainages, blueberry burns the Forest maps on purpose after prescribed fire, and a denser recreation grid because Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore sits next door. Pictured Rocks is National Park Service. I do not hunt it and I do not tell you to. Grand Island National Recreation Area is Hiawatha dirt a half-mile off Munising: about 13,500 acres, 300-foot wave-cut cliffs, a passenger ferry from M-28, no public vehicles on the island. Black bears use the camps. It is a weather-day hike or bike, not where I hang a stand on Nov. 15.
West Zone — Rapid River/Manistique Ranger District (8181 US Highway 2, Rapid River, 906-474-6442). South side of the west unit, US-2, Lake Michigan influence, Big Island Lake Wilderness country. Manistique is the grocery-and-processor town. Rapid River is closer to the south trailheads. The Bay de Noc / Grand Island National Recreation Trail runs about 40 miles from near Rapid River north to Ackerman Lake on an old portage route. Treat that tread like a road. Hikers, horses, and bikes use it. I do not sit it on Saturday of firearm week.
East Zone — St. Ignace Ranger District (W1900 US-2, St. Ignace, 906-643-7900). This is the trap. Sandy, historically unhomesteaded ground — jack pine, openings, dunes near the Straits, and a lot of hunters who paid the bridge and stopped at the first green USFS sign. Horseshoe Bay Wilderness (about 3,800 acres) is undeveloped Lake Huron shoreline. Round Island Wilderness is 375 acres in the Straits; the lighthouse tip is excluded. Do not build a deer plan around a ferry.
East Zone — Sault Ste. Marie Ranger District (same St. Ignace office handles both). Whitefish Bay / Lake Superior side, Point Iroquois country, more interior swamp and jack pine than the St. Ignace sand dump. Delirium Wilderness (about 11,900 acres) has no designated trails or campsites. The Forest named it for the bugs that drove early loggers half-mad. That is solitude. It is not an opening-morning drag you can finish before dark if you shoot into the middle of it.
Between the two zones is a lot of private, state, and town. You can drive US-2 and think you are “in the forest” when you are not. Counties the Forest sits in: Chippewa, Mackinac, Alger, Schoolcraft, Delta, and a slice of Marquette. The east unit used to be the Marquette National Forest. An executive order on February 9, 1962 folded it into Hiawatha. The configuration you see on the map is that merge, not one original purchase unit.
Terrain, and how deer actually use it
Hiawatha deer do not live in a Missouri oak hollow and they do not live on a Pike County bean edge. Deer habitat here is security cover in a pine/aspen/cedar mosaic, with food spread out: mast on hardwood ridges when it is actually falling, logging browse, marsh edges, leftover farmstead apples, and blueberry after fire. Wild diet context is on what do deer eat. Old orchard apples are honest overlap with do deer eat apples, not a reason to sit a random tree 80 yards from a county road.
West-unit deer bed in cedar, tag alder, and the first nasty cut off a two-track. They travel the dry finger between two wet pockets. I hunt the wet-to-dry edge, not a named trailhead. Munising sandstone and lake-effect air off Superior make evenings cold and scent dump toward water. Hardwood ridges matter when acorns are actually there. If they are not, I quit the pretty timber and hunt the ugly edge.
East-unit deer use jack pine walls, alder, and any thick stuff that is not visible from I-75. The plantation edge swirls. Openings look like food and become hunter highways. I want the nasty mix other people drive past because it looks empty. It is closer to the bridge. It is not denser than southern Michigan. If you only have a weekend and you need to see deer, this unit will not turn into farmland because you paid a toll.
When I time movement I check deer feeding times, then I let snow and pressure rewrite the clock.
Access, parking, and opening weekend
Download the Motor Vehicle Use Map for the district you will park in. Hiawatha publishes four: Munising, Rapid River/Manistique, St. Ignace, Sault Ste. Marie. Free PDFs and Avenza copies sit on the maps page. The Forest says more than 2,000 miles of Forest Road are open to some class of motorized use — that is not a permission slip to ride wherever the two-track looks packed. A route that looked open on Google last August may be seasonal, gated, or a snowmobile trail. I keep a paper MVUM in the truck because cell service dies in cedar.
Hiawatha’s own hunting notice is the line that bites people: wheeled motor vehicles, including OHVs, only on routes shown open on the current MVUM. Cross-country motorized travel is prohibited, including for baiting, blind access, and game retrieval. The maps page says that has been policy since 1986. If you shoot a deer 400 yards off a designated road, you drag it. A sled in the truck is not optional once snow flies. Wilderness adds another layer: no motors, no mechanical transport, no game carts. Do not shoot a deer into a Big Island Lake portage you cannot get a sled through.
Same notice and the Forest hunting page: portable, temporary blinds only; placed no earlier than September 1; off by January 1; owner name, phone, and address on the blind; no nails, screws, or screw-in steps; no cutting shooting lanes. Abandoned blinds get pulled. Guiding needs a federal special-use permit. I hunt a hang-on or saddle and I take it with me. I wasted money on $400 ozone scent control that did not fix a bad wind. Opening Saturday, Nov. 15, every easy pull-off you can see from I-75 (East) and anything with a recreation sign near Munising (West) will have a truck. Hunt it like opening day on public land: 400 to 900 yards off the easiest access, last stretch wet, steep, or deadfall. I pick a backup parking pin before daylight. If the first lot is full, I do not drive the road looking for a miracle. I go to the pin.
US-2 and I-75 at dawn are also a collision hunt you did not sign up for. If you hit a deer on the way to the stand, the after-action is what to do if you hit a deer, not “it will be fine in the ditch.”
Check current Forest alerts the week you drive. As of this writing the Forest has a Haymeadow Trail and Bridge closure and a public-entry restriction at Stonington Quarry. Do not hunt a closed quarry. Do not plan a weather-day hike on a closed trail.
Wind and thermals
West-unit thermals fall toward water at last light. A west wind that feels perfect on a sandstone ridge is garbage in the cedar below. East-unit jack pine swirls at the plantation wall. I sit the downwind corner of cover and let a bad swirl dump into open water, bog, or a cut I do not expect deer to walk. If the wind is switching 4 to 18 mph, I pick a different tree or I sit lower and tighter. Details on movement live on do deer move in the wind.
I pick setups where my mistake blows into dead space, not into the best bedding. That is the same call I make in the Ozarks. Hiawatha just has more lake and more pine wall to dump into.
Season notes versus the rest of Michigan
Do not copy the whole state table onto this page. Base license plus a deer license or combo, Sunday hunting (legal), hunter orange, harvest reporting, and the nonresident sticker shock ($151 base, not the $20 deer tag) live on the Michigan page. If you are coming from Illinois or Ohio, read planning an out-of-state deer hunt before you book one town for “both” Hiawatha units. You cannot hunt them as a lunch-break backup. What is not the same as the Lower Peninsula, and what is extra on this Forest:
- Baiting. Banned on the entire LP. Legal in the UP with the DNR cap: no more than 2 gallons, scattered over at least 10×10 feet, in season (Sept. 15–Jan. 1 on the current digest). The extra baiting ban around the 2018 Dickinson CWD case — a core surveillance area that also touched Delta and Menominee — was lifted after follow-up testing came back clean. Delta is Rapid River / Gladstone / Stonington country on this Forest; that does not mean the DNR cannot draw a new circle. Confirm the current digest the week you leave. Forest Service still bans motorized travel off the MVUM to tend a pile. On Commercial Forest land — private timber with hunting access, not USFS — do not leave bait unless the landowner said you could. I still hunt without it.
- Muzzleloader. Three days, Dec. 4–6, 2026, UP DMUs only. Crossbows are not a default UP muzzleloader tool. The LP’s December firearm hunt is any legal firearm those same calendar days. Do not mix the two in your head.
- Antlerless. The old UP antlerless drawing is gone for 2026. Universal antlerless licenses are only valid in a short DMU list (DNR: 022, 122, 155, 255, 121, and 055). Do not assume a $20 tag is a doe hunt on the tract you parked on. Check the current DNR DMU map for the county, not a forum screenshot from 2023.
- CWD. Dickinson County is the UP’s confirmed wild case — west of this Forest, on the Ottawa/state-forest side. Hiawatha counties are not a free pass to skip carcass rules. I still bag a deer the way the DNR wants it moved. Link DNR CWD locations, CWD symptoms, and how to get your deer tested.
- Blinds and retrieval. State portable-blind dates apply. Hiawatha adds no screw-in steps, no shooting-lane cutting, and no motorized retrieval off the MVUM. That last one is the trip-changer.
Dogs are not a deer-hunting method in Michigan. Tracking after a hit is a different question — read the current wildlife conservation order, do not copy a hound-state habit.
Where to sit without dropping a pin
I do not publish a tree. I publish a pattern.
On Hiawatha West: the first cut or cedar edge off a two-track that does not have a recreation name. Avoid Bruno’s Run, Valley Spur, and any lot with a selfie stick in October. Hunt the motor-legal side of Big Island Lake country if you need a drag. Big Island Lake Wilderness is about 5,700 acres with twelve designated campsites, portages, and a 10-person group cap. Canoe camping is the point. It is not a drive-up gun opener.
On Hiawatha East: get off the I-75 / St. Ignace obvious sand roads. Hunt the nasty jack-pine/alder mix. Mackinac Wilderness (about 11,400 acres) holds the Wild and Scenic Carp River; the hiking trail is minimum-maintenance and the river jams. Rock River Canyon Wilderness (about 5,200 acres, west unit) is 150-foot sandstone, Rock River Falls, and the Eben Ice Caves in winter. That is a weather-day walk with ice cleats, not a November stand.
One morning sit tight to bedding. One evening sit on a travel edge. If I cannot explain why a deer would walk it at 8:10 a.m., I do not sit there. Still-hunt only in wet snow or enough wind. In 2014 I tracked a buck line 600 yards in crunchy UP snow and blew him out of his bed because I got impatient. Tracking is hunting. The deer gets a vote. Shot windows in this cover swallow a bad hit. I decide max range before I climb. Refresh shot placement and the after the shot hub. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her. In cedar that mistake is a lost deer in a swamp that all looks the same after dark.
If you are not hunting
Weather dies up here. Have a daylight plan that is not “drive to camp and stare at the wall.”
West: Grand Island ferry from Munising if the boats are running (Grand Island Landing on M-28, a few miles west of town). Bruno’s Run if you want to walk off a bad sit. Pictured Rocks as a neighbor — NPS rules, not a Forest hunt. Eben Ice Caves only when the ground is frozen; the Forest says turn around if it is not. East: the Straits, St. Ignace, Point Iroquois Lighthouse if you already booked the bridge town. None of that is a reason to hunt a trailhead on Saturday of firearm week.
Where to stay, ice, and the meat pole
Pick a base for the zone you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet wool. Do not sleep in St. Ignace and hunt the Munising district. Do not sleep in Ironwood and “just run over” to Hiawatha West for the evening sit — that is Ottawa country, a different forest.
Munising, MI — Hiawatha West, Munising district. Tourist town in October. Book away from the lakeshore weekend crowd if you can. Hunt interior, not the ferry lot.
Manistique, MI — Hiawatha West south, Rapid River/Manistique district, US-2. Closer to Big Island Lake country than Marquette is. Grocery and a real town if the weather dies.
Rapid River, MI — quieter south-West base if your two-tracks are off US-2 east of town. Smaller services. Confirm a processor before you shoot.
St. Ignace, MI — Hiawatha East. Bridge town. Fine if that is your unit. A bad West-zone base and a terrible Ottawa base.
Sault Ste. Marie, MI — East unit, Superior/Whitefish side. Use it when the Sault district is the hunt, not as a Munising substitute.
Call a processor before you shoot. UP shops book for Nov. 15. Ask if they are taking CWD-area deer and when you can actually pick up meat. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before. I keep a cheap plastic sled in the truck once snow is possible. Hardware-store version, about $40, has hauled more deer for me than any boutique pack frame. Field work is how to field dress a deer. If this forest is slammed
Same zone, uglier access first. Wet, steep, deadfall. Most orange quits at the first dry two-track.
Switch Hiawatha zones only with a town plan. East slammed on I-75 → West interior off Rapid River or Munising. West slammed on recreation roads → East only if you already have a St. Ignace or Sault room. Do not commute between zones in the dark.
Switch forests next. Ottawa is the western UP block — Ironwood/Watersmeet, not a Munising hotel. The choice page is Upper Peninsula national forests. Huron-Manistee is Lower Peninsula; there is no child URL on this site yet. Do not hunt a 404. Michigan state forest and Commercial Forest Act land are the other green; CF is private timber with posted exceptions, not USFS.
A different state is a different tag. Chequamegon is the Wisconsin cousin — aspen age-class and a nine-day gun week. Terrain split: Ottawa vs Chequamegon. Pennsylvania’s Allegheny is a sibling trip, not a same-weekend backup from Munising. Lease vs public: public land vs lease.
Wildlife that actually lives here
Black bear — including on Grand Island, where the Forest posts bear-aware notes around camps. Gray wolf is a UP fact; you may hear them, you will hear camp stories. Hang food, keep a clean truck bed, and hunt deer. Wolves are not a reason to rattle a 20-acre cedar swamp all day. Moose exist in the western UP in low numbers; they are not a Hiawatha deer tag and they are not common on the east unit sand. Snowshoe hare and ruffed grouse are the other animals you will actually jump. I do not sell a lynx sighting as a hunt plan.

Is Hiawatha the same hunt as Ottawa?
No. Ottawa is one western block with cedar, elevation, and lake-effect snow against the Wisconsin line. Hiawatha is two disconnected units with shoreline on three Great Lakes, more jack pine on the east, and more I-75 and Pictured Rocks pressure. The woods how-to for Ottawa is on its own page. Should I hunt the East unit or the West unit?
West if you want cedar, sandstone, and a Munising or Manistique base. East if you are coming across the bridge and you accept jack pine and opener pressure. They are not a same-day backup. Book the town that matches the MVUM you downloaded.
Can I ride an ATV out to my deer?
Not off designated routes. The Forest’s maps page and hunting notice say motorized retrieval off the MVUM is prohibited, and that has been policy since 1986. Wilderness also bans game carts. Plan the drag before you shoot. A sled beats a citation.
Can I bait on Hiawatha?
Michigan allows limited baiting in the UP (2 gallons, 10×10 scatter, in season). Forest Service rules still apply: no motorized travel off the MVUM to tend a pile, and Commercial Forest land is not USFS. The extra Dickinson-area CWD bait ban that also touched Delta County was lifted after follow-up testing. Confirm the current DNR summary. I hunt this forest without bait.
Should I hunt Grand Island or Pictured Rocks?
Grand Island is Forest Service National Recreation Area — ferry, no public vehicles, black bears, sandstone cliffs. I treat it as a weather day, not a gun-opener stand. Pictured Rocks is National Park Service, next door, not this Forest. I do not hunt it.
Where should I stay for a first Hiawatha trip?
Munising or Manistique if you picked West. St. Ignace or Sault Ste. Marie if you picked East. Rapid River if your two-tracks are the south West district. Marquette is a service town if you are bouncing, not a substitute for being close to the parking area. Ironwood is Ottawa.
