Who this forest is for
If you want a public mule deer you can glass off an aspen finger into a sage park, and you will pack meat before you chase a second basin, hunt Medicine Bow.
If you want a long November rut on easy two-tracks, or a tree-stand sit like Pike County, do not start here. The general rifle window on the Snowy Range is two weeks in October. Pole Mountain looks close to town and hunts like a city park.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. I have chased mule deer in Colorado. Medicine Bow is the Wyoming version of that Colorado lesson, except the forest is split into four mountain islands, the rifle seasons are shorter, and I-80 puts a lot of weekend trucks within two hours of Denver and Cheyenne.
This is not Bridger-Teton. There is no grizzly planning item. There is a quartzite skyline, a scenic byway that closes for winter, and mule deer that leave the alpine the first time an October storm sticks. What follows is how I would spend three days on this Forest without treating it like a name-swap of the Bighorns.
Four mountain blocks, plus a grassland
Pick a block before you pick a motel. The proclamation boundary looks huge on a wall map. On the ground you are hunting one range.
Snowy Range (Laramie and Brush Creek/Hayden districts). This is the postcard: Medicine Bow Peak at 12,013 feet, Snowy Range Pass at 10,847 feet on Wyoming Highway 130. Hunt Areas 75 (Four Mile), 76 (Sheep Mountain), and 77 (Boulder Ridge) are Region D general, rifle Oct. 1–14 in 2026, archery Sep. 1–30. Game and Fish’s 2026 hunt forecast called adult buck numbers strong in the Sheep Mountain herd, then warned that a warm fall makes the hunt hard. That is this country. Deer summer high. They do not stay high if it is 62 degrees at noon.
Sierra Madre (Brush Creek/Hayden, based in Saratoga). West of the North Platte, accessed off Wyoming 70 over Battle Pass and out of Encampment. Huston Park Wilderness (30,588 acres) and Encampment River Wilderness (10,124 acres) sit here. This is the pack-in play. It is also where a nonresident who drew Region D and then walked into wilderness without a licensed outfitter or a Wyoming resident guide is hunting illegally. The statute is W.S. 23-2-401. Game and Fish’s own FAQ says the resident companion has to pick up a free non-commercial guide license in person. Hiking and fishing do not require that. Big game does.
Laramie Peak (Douglas district). Granite island mountain north of I-80, Hunt Area 64, Region J general, rifle Oct. 15–31. Chapter 6 closes the Tom Thorne/Beth Williams Wildlife Habitat Management Area and the Laramie Peak WHMA north of Tunnel Road (Albany County 727) during that general. Read the limitation. This block hunts more like a steep, rocky island than alpine Snowy Range.
Pole Mountain (Laramie district). East of Laramie, former military reservation, now the recreation unit next to town. Hunt Area 61 (Harriman) is Region J, rifle Oct. 1–14, and it is on the 2026 mandatory CWD list. Target shooting here has an annual closure March 31 through September 10. I treat Pole Mountain as a scouting and leftover-day option, not the mule trip I drove for.
Thunder Basin National Grassland. Same supervisor’s office, different sport. Prairie, breaks, and coal country out of Douglas. If your tag is east-side grassland, hunt it like the Powder River page on Wyoming public mule land, not like Medicine Bow Peak.
Terrain, and how mule deer actually use it
Medicine Bow mule deer are an edge animal on steep ground. They are not an oak-ridge whitetail. If you want the habitat version of that sentence, I already wrote it at deer habitat.
On the Snowy Range I hunt the first aspen and park edge below the krummholz, not the quartzite tourist pull-off. Deer bed where they can see a long way and drop into spruce-fir or a north-face pocket when the sun hits. In the Sierra Madre they use open parks, alpine bogs, and lodgepole/aspen mixes — Huston Park is full of that, and it never really breaks timberline. On Laramie Peak they use granite benches, mahogany, and the first timber finger that dumps into sage.
Food is browse, forbs, and whatever green is left after a dry August. There is no bean field. A warm October keeps them high and nocturnal. A six-inch snow in the first week of October dumps them onto the same benches every other truck can see from the byway. That is the whole hunt. I glass first. I do not still-hunt dark timber hoping a mule deer walks by like an Ozark doe.
If you cannot tell a mule from a whitetail at 400 yards, stop and read mule deer vs whitetail. A Region D general is antlered mule deer or any white-tailed deer. Shooting the wrong silhouette in a river bottom is how you tag a private-land whitetail you cannot keep, or pass a legal mule because you waited for a Midwest rack.
Access, parking, and the opening-weekend trap
Download the Motor Vehicle Use Map for the district you are parking in. A two-track that looks open on a phone basemap can be seasonal, a private inholding, or closed. Forest visitor maps are $14 print / $5 Avenza from the maps page. MVUMs are free.
Wyoming Highway 130 — the Snowy Range Scenic Byway — is the access everyone uses and the trap everyone parks on. The high 12-mile stretch, mile markers 36–48 from Green Rock trailhead to just above Ryan Park, closes every fall when WYDOT stops plowing. It closed November 26, 2025 and reopened May 7, 2026. October 1–14 rifle on Hunt Areas 75–77 usually still has pavement. Archery in September does too. A wet storm in week two of October can still shut side roads even when 130 is open. I do not plan a high-country pack-out that requires 130 after Halloween.
Opening weekend of general rifle is a zoo at Libby Flats, Lake Marie, and every pull-off with a view. I treat it like opening-day public land anywhere: park where it looks slightly wrong, then walk at least 25 minutes, last stretch ugly. If I can glass the basin from the truck, I do not hunt it at daylight. I walk a mile to a different angle.
Checkerboard is real on the forest edge, leftover Union Pacific grant country. Corner crossing is legal in the 10th Circuit after Iron Bar Holdings v. Cape; the U.S. Supreme Court denied review on October 20, 2025. That is airspace at the monument, not a license to walk the private. If you cannot do it clean, pick a different block.
Forbes Sheep Mountain WHMA is 950 acres on the west end of Sheep Mountain, Hunt Area 76, bought so the public can reach about 20,000 acres of Forest Service ground. Motor travel is limited to marked routes. It is closed to all human presence January 1–April 30. That closure does not hit the October rifle season, but it tells you this is winter range, not a secret. Details sit on the Forbes Sheep Mountain WHMA page.
Tree stands may be used if they come off daily and do not damage the tree. Forest language is blunt: damage can mean a fine. I do not leave a hang-on overnight on a two-track aspen. I glass, stalk, or sit a rock. If I do hang, it is a lightweight stand I pack back to the truck.

Wind and thermals on quartzite
A weather app that says “west 8 mph” is lying to you on a 10,000-foot face. Morning thermals dump downhill until the quartzite warms. Evening thermals climb. Midday they swirl at the lip of every park. I glass from a spot that takes at least 25 minutes of walking, even if it is only 1.2 miles, and I use the ridge like a wall. I wasted $400 on ozone scent control that made zero difference on an open hillside in Colorado. I shower, wear clean base layers, and hunt the wind.
On a 25 mph day I stop long stalks across parks and glass tight pockets and saddles instead — same rule as do deer move in the wind. If I am hunting an aspen finger over a sage park, I sit on the downwind side of the park, not in swirling bedding timber. If the wind is wrong I switch basins. That is cheaper than educating a whole drainage you drove eight hours to hunt.
When I am trying to time movement inside a 14-day rifle season, I still check feeding times, then I glass the same slope again around 8:30 a.m. because mule deer stand up and shift beds. Walking at first light through the best-looking cover is how you blow a basin you never knew you had.
Season notes versus the rest of Wyoming
Do not copy a Black Hills or Bighorn Basin calendar onto this forest.
- The rifle window is short. Hunt Areas 75, 76, and 77 general close October 14. Hunt Area 70 is seven days starting October 15. That is not the Nov. 1–20 Region A Black Hills season, and it is not a long limited-quota sit. If you want more days on this mountain, apply archery (Sep. 1–30) or draw limited-quota Area 60 / Platte Valley 78–81.
- Area 60 Type 2 is off national forest. Type 1 is any deer Oct. 15–Nov. 5. Type 2 is any deer off national forest the same dates. I have watched people celebrate a draw and then realize they cannot hunt the timber they booked the cabin for.
- Platte Valley (78–81) is limited quota for a reason. The 2026 forecast said adult buck numbers are strong there. The herd objective is 16,000; the modeled post-2025 estimate sat around 10,500. A 2025 harvest survey cited 495 buck mule deer, 65 percent success, 70 percent hunter satisfaction — better than 2023–24, similar to 2018. That is not a general-license walk-in. Confirm leftover lists in July. I am not going to invent a leftover that is not posted.
- Mandatory CWD sampling in Hunt Areas 61, 74, 75, 76, and 77 (plus 15). Lymph nodes at a check station, the Laramie regional office at 1212 S. Adams, or the Wildlife Health Lab. Head and spinal column stay at the kill site or go to an approved landfill or incinerator in Wyoming. If a deer looks sick, use CWD symptoms and how to get a deer tested. Goshen Rim, not this forest, was the 36 percent herd in the 2026 forecast. Other Laramie-region herds that sat under 10 percent five years ago were running about 15 percent. That is still a reason to sample, not a reason to skip the hunt.
- Wilderness is legal to hunt and illegal for a solo nonresident. Savage Run is 14,927 acres. Platte River Wilderness is about 23,492 acres split with Colorado. Huston Park and Encampment River are the Sierra Madre pair. One licensed guide or resident guide per two nonresident hunters. A resident guide cannot take money and cannot guide more than two nonresidents a year on national forest or wilderness.
- Baiting is illegal for big game except a short list of qualified hunters. You cannot hunt deer with dogs. One leashed blood-trailer is legal after the shot under Chapter 2. Fluorescent orange or pink on during regular firearm. Special archery is exempt. Sunday hunting is legal statewide.
Where to sit without dropping a pin
I will not give you a GPS coordinate. I will give you spot types you can repeat after you look at the MVUM and the Hunt Planner.
Aspen finger dumping into a sage park, one drainage off 130. Glass from the downwind rim. Stalk only if the bedded buck cannot see the skyline you have to cross. This is the Colorado mule sit, transplanted onto Albany County.
North-face spruce pocket under a quartzite bench after the first snow. Deer drop overnight. Every truck on Libby Flats can see the sunny slope. Hunt the ugly shaded cut they actually use at 9 a.m.
Sierra Madre park inside Huston Park, if you are a resident or you have the guide paper. Continental Divide Trail traffic is real in September. Get off the CDT tread. Hunt the first bog-edge park that makes people groan about wet boots. Pack-out is the hunt. If you cannot quarter and hang, do not shoot.
Laramie Peak mahogany bench off a gated spur. Granite, not alpine. Same wind rules. Watch the WHMA closure north of Tunnel Road so you do not glass legal deer on illegal dirt.
First thick cover off a two-track during rifle week. When shots start at 7:05 a.m., mule deer dive into the nastiest pocket, not off the scenic overlook. Hunt the downwind edge of that mess, 40 to 120 yards off, not in the middle of it.

On Medicine Bow that means a bed you can glass from 400 yards, droppings that still look wet under an aspen, and a track in frost at a seep — not a card pull on a food plot.
If you are not hunting
The same land is a trip if the rifle stays in the case. Snowy Range Scenic Byway between Centennial and Saratoga, Mirror Lake and Lake Marie pull-outs, Vedauwoo granite north of I-80, and the Continental Divide Trail off Battle Pass are why I tell people to book a town with a grocery, not just a trailhead. Laramie still works if the weather dies. Saratoga is quieter and puts you on the west side. That is also why lodging lives on this URL instead of a fake hotels-near-the-forest page.
If the hunt goes quiet, I would rather walk a named trail than invent a new “secret basin” and educate it. Elk Mountain and the Platte Valley towns have real food. I do not need a second mountain website to enjoy a rest day.
Where to stay, ice, and a meat pole
Pick the town on the side of the unit you are actually hunting. Drive time to the two-track, a grocery, and a processor beats a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can ice quarters if the afternoon hits 62 degrees.
Laramie is the I-80 grocery, the Wildlife Health Lab, and the jump-off for Pole Mountain and the east Snowy Range. Centennial puts you closer to Green Rock and the high lakes if you are hunting Hunt Areas 75–77 from the east. Saratoga is the Brush Creek/Hayden base — west Snowy Range and the Sierra Madre — with a real town if a recovery turns into a highway run. Encampment (and Riverside) is the wilderness trailhead town; I stay here if Huston Park or Encampment River is the plan. Douglas is Laramie Peak and Thunder Basin, not a Snowy Range motel. Call a processor before you leave home. I do not keep a secret list, and I will not invent a shop name.
I process my own deer in the garage, taught by my uncle who was a butcher, so I am picky from minute one. Hide off, quarters in the shade, airflow, game bags in the pack every day. If it is 62 degrees at 1:00 p.m. and you are two miles out and 1,800 feet above the truck, meat care is the hunt. If this country is slammed
Do the opposite of the crowd without doing the opposite of common sense. Do not hike the skyline past three other hunters on Libby Flats. Side-hill the ugly stuff. Hunt midweek. Move one drainage toward Battle Pass. If your tag is Region D and the Snowy Range parking lots are full, the Sierra Madre still exists. If your tag is Region J, Laramie Peak is the island, not Pole Mountain at daylight on Saturday.

Wildlife that actually lives here
Elk share every block. A bugle in September is not a bonus deer. Moose use willow bottoms on the west side; Forbes Sheep Mountain lists moose as a commonly found species. Black bear and mountain lion are here — the forest plan called them present and popular. Bighorn sheep: three herds on the Forest. Pronghorn live on the sage edges and on Thunder Basin, not on Medicine Bow Peak. There are no grizzlies on this forest. That is a real difference from Shoshone and Bridger-Teton, and it is why I still hang meat and keep a clean camp instead of telling a Yellowstone story that does not belong.
CWD is the wildlife fact that changes what you do with the carcass. Sample it. Bone out if you are crossing state lines. CDC advice if it tests positive is do not eat the meat. Our what CWD looks like in deer meat page is the longer version.
Gear that earned a ride in the truck
Buy glass before camo. I run Vortex Diamondback HD 10×42s, about $230. On the Snowy Range a spotting scope helps judge a buck at 600 yards; binoculars find him. Caribou Gear reusable game bags have held up better for me than the cheap set that tore on a bone edge — about $55 on sale. Solo high-country days I carry a Garmin inReach Mini 2, about $300. I have two kids now. “I should be back by dark” is not a plan on Huston Park. I wait for broadside or slight quartering-away and pick a hair, not a whole shoulder. I learned that the hard way in 2007, pushed a gut-shot doe too early, and never found her. The breakdown I use is where to shoot a deer to drop it.

FAQ
Do I need a draw to hunt deer on Medicine Bow National Forest?
Residents buy a general deer license over the counter and hunt any hunt area open to general licenses. Nonresidents draw Region D (Snowy Range / Sierra Madre generals) or Region J (Laramie Peak / Harriman / Pole Mountain). Hunt Area 60 and Platte Valley 78–81 are limited quota. Leftovers exist some years. Deadlines sit on the licenses and applications page.
Can a nonresident hunt Huston Park or Encampment River Wilderness alone?
No. Wyoming requires a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, at least one per two nonresident hunters, for big game in designated wilderness. The resident guide license is free and in-person. You can hike and fish those wildernesses without that paper. You cannot hunt mule deer there solo as a nonresident. When does the Snowy Range highway close?
WYDOT closes the high 12 miles of Wyoming 130 when snow makes plowing impractical. Recent closures: Nov. 26, 2025; Nov. 19, 2024; Nov. 26, 2023. It reopened May 7, 2026. October rifle on Hunt Areas 75–77 usually still has pavement. Do not count on 130 after a hard October storm, and do not count on it at all in November.
Is Pole Mountain a good mule deer hunt?
It is close to Laramie and it is crowded. Hunt Area 61 is a short October general with mandatory CWD sampling. I would rather spend a Region J tag on Laramie Peak than on the recreation unit next to town.
Sunday, bait, dogs, stands?
Sunday yes. Baiting no, except qualified persons. Dogs cannot hunt deer; a leashed blood-trailer is legal after the shot. Forest Service: stands come off daily, no damage to trees.
