Pick the forest before you pick a two-track.
If you want cedar-hemlock bedding, lake-effect snow, and a million-acre block from Lake Superior to the Wisconsin line, hunt Ottawa National Forest.
If you want two disconnected “Great Lakes” units, jack pine and shoreline, and a shorter drive from the Mackinac Bridge, hunt Hiawatha — and decide East or West before you book a cabin.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I grew up broke, so I learned public land before I ever paid for a lease, and I still split time between my 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. The UP is the trip I take when I want snow tracks and room to walk. It is not one forest. Treating Hiawatha as “Ottawa with a different sign” is how you burn a tank of gas on US-2 and sit in empty sand pine.

Do not treat that box as a proclamation. If it and the DNR disagree, the DNR wins.
Who this place is for
This is a meat-and-tracks hunt. You will see fewer deer than a southern Lower Peninsula state game area. You will drag farther. You will sit in cedar that soaks you to the knee. If you need 12 sightings a sit, stay south of the bridge and accept bait bans, CWD rules, and headlights. If you want room, snow, and a legal 2-gallon bait pile you probably should not bother with, come north.
It is also a choice hunt. Ottawa and Hiawatha do not share a parking lot. Ironwood to St. Ignace on US-2 is a half-day, not a backup sit. Book the town that matches the unit, or you will hunt from a motel parking lot you already paid for.
Two forests, three hunts
The Upper Peninsula has two national forests. Ottawa is one block: the Forest Service calls it about one million acres from the south shore of Lake Superior to the Wisconsin border. Elevations run from about 600 feet on Superior to more than 1,800 feet in the Sylvania Wilderness. Portions take more than 200 inches of snow a year — “Big Snow Country.” Three wildernesses (Sylvania, Sturgeon Gorge, McCormick) add more than 50,000 acres of no-motor country. Hiawatha is the other forest, and it is not one blob on the map. The Forest Service splits it into two zones: West (Munising and Rapid River/Manistique ranger districts) and East (Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace). Headquarters sit at 820 Rains Drive in Gladstone. National Forest Foundation and Forest Service hunting notes put it near 900,000 acres with about 100 miles of shoreline on Superior, Michigan, and Huron — that is why they nickname it the Great Lakes National Forest. Counties: Chippewa, Mackinac, Alger, Schoolcraft, Delta, and a slice of Marquette. Between the two zones is a lot of private, state, and town. You can drive US-2 and think you are “in the forest” when you are not.
Hiawatha holds six wildernesses totaling more than 38,000 acres — Big Island Lake, Delirium, Horseshoe Bay, Mackinac, Rock River Canyon, and Round Island — added by the Michigan Wilderness Act of 1987. That is a different wilderness menu than Ottawa’s three. Big Island Lake, northwest of Steuben between Munising and Manistique, is the paddling one: inland lakes and portages, not a drive-up gun opener. Round Island sits in the Straits. Do not build a deer plan around a ferry.
Grand Island National Recreation Area is Hiawatha dirt off Munising. Sandstone cliffs, a ferry, no public vehicles on the island. It is a weather-day hike, not where I hang a stand. Pictured Rocks is National Park Service, next door, not Forest Service. I do not hunt it and I do not tell you to.
Terrain, and how deer actually use it
Ottawa deer bed in cedar, tag alder, and hemlock, then travel the first dry finger between two bogs. Hardwood ridges matter when acorns are actually falling. Lake-effect snow on the Gogebic crest can give you a trackable base in early November when the east end of the UP is still rain and leaf noise. That is the hunt I described on the Ottawa page.
Hiawatha West hunts closer to that, with more lakeshore influence. Munising sandstone, aspen cuts, cedar drainages, blueberry burns the Forest Service maps on purpose, and a denser recreation grid because Pictured Rocks tourism leaks onto forest roads. Deer still want security cover first. I hunt the wet-to-dry edge and the first ugly cut off a two-track, not a trailhead that has a Bruno’s Run parking lot and a selfie stick.
Hiawatha East is the trap. The east unit sits on sandy, historically unhomesteaded ground — jack pine, openings, dunes near St. Ignace, and a lot of hunters who drove I-75, paid the bridge, and stopped at the first green USFS sign. Old farmstead apples and browse pockets exist. That is honest overlap with do deer eat apples, not a reason to sit a random orchard 80 yards from a county road. Deer habitat here is security cover in a pine/aspen mosaic, not a Missouri oak hollow and not a Pike County bean edge.
Food is spread out on all three hunts. Acorns, logging browse, marsh edges, leftover apples. Wild diet context is on what do deer eat. When I time movement I still check deer feeding times, then I let snow and pressure rewrite the clock. Big-woods deer hide daylight. They do not lose it.
Access, parking, and opening weekend
Download the MVUM for the district you will park in. Hiawatha publishes four: Munising, Rapid River/Manistique, St. Ignace, Sault Ste. Marie. Ottawa has its own. A two-track that looked open on Google last August may be seasonal, gated, or a snowmobile route. I keep a paper MVUM in the truck because cell service dies in cedar.
Hiawatha’s own hunting season notice is blunt: wheeled motor vehicles, including OHVs, only on routes shown open on the current MVUM. Cross-country motorized travel is prohibited, including for baiting, blind access, and game retrieval — the forest says that has been policy since 1986. If you shoot a deer 400 yards off a designated road, you drag it. A sled in the truck is not optional once snow flies.
Same notice: portable, temporary blinds only; no nails, screws, or screw-in steps in trees; owner name, phone, and address on the blind; no cutting shooting lanes. Guiding needs a federal special-use permit. I hunt a hang-on or saddle and I take it with me. I wasted money on $400 ozone scent control that did not fix a bad wind. A set of $35 climbing sticks has lasted 11 seasons.
Opening Saturday, Nov. 15, every easy pull-off on US-2 (Ottawa) and anything you can see from I-75 (Hiawatha East) will have a truck. Hunt it like opening day on public land: 400 to 900 yards off the easiest access, last stretch wet, steep, or deadfall. I pick a backup parking pin before daylight. If the first lot is full, I do not drive the road looking for a miracle. I go to the pin.

Wind and thermals
Ottawa thermals fall into swamps at last light. A west wind that feels perfect on the ridge is garbage in the cedar below. Hiawatha West does the same trick on lake-effect evenings off Superior — cold air slides toward water. Hiawatha East jack pine swirls at the plantation wall. I sit the downwind corner of cover and let a bad swirl dump into open water, bog, or a cut I do not expect deer to walk. Season notes versus the rest of Michigan
You still need a base license plus a deer license or combo. Nonresident sticker shock is the $151 base, not the $20 deer tag. If you are coming from Illinois or Ohio, read planning an out-of-state deer hunt before you book Ironwood for “both gun openers” with Wisconsin. You cannot. What is not the same as the Lower Peninsula:
- Baiting. Banned on the entire LP. Legal in the UP with the 2-gallon scatter cap. On Commercial Forest land, do not leave bait unless the landowner said you could. A pile does not cancel a west wind into cedar, and it teaches every hunter with a flashlight where to sit.
- Muzzleloader. Three days, Dec. 4–6, 2026. Crossbows are not a default UP muzzleloader tool. The LP’s December firearm hunt is any legal firearm. Do not mix the two in your head.
- Antlerless. Short DMU list. I check the current DNR table for the unit I parked in, not a forum screenshot from 2023.
- CWD. Dickinson is the UP county on the wild list. I still bag a deer the way the DNR wants it moved, and I know how to get a deer tested for CWD. 2025 focused UP testing in several counties came back with zeros in that table; that is not a promise for 2026.
Dogs are not a deer-hunting method in Michigan. Tracking after a hit is a different question — read the current wildlife conservation order, do not copy a hound-state habit.
Where to sit without dropping a pin
I do not publish a tree. I publish a pattern.
On Ottawa: swamp edge or the dry finger between two wet pockets, 400 to 900 yards off easy access, last 200 yards ugly. Fresh tracks both directions, droppings that still look wet. The full version is on the Ottawa page.
On Hiawatha West: the first cut or cedar edge off a two-track that does not have a recreation name. Avoid trailheads. Hunt the side of Big Island Lake country that is still motor-legal if you need a drag; do not shoot a deer into a wilderness portage you cannot get a sled through.
On Hiawatha East: get off the I-75 / St. Ignace obvious sand roads. Hunt the nasty jack-pine/alder mix other people drive past because it looks ugly. If you only have a weekend and you need to see deer, this unit is still not southern LP farm country. It is closer to the bridge, not denser.
One morning sit tight to bedding. One evening sit on a travel edge. If I cannot explain why a deer would walk it at 8:10 a.m., I do not sit there. Still-hunt only in wet snow or enough wind. In 2014 I tracked a buck line 600 yards in crunchy UP snow and blew him out of his bed because I got impatient. Tracking is hunting. The deer gets a vote.
Shot windows in cedar are 15 to 40 yards. I decide max range before I climb. Cover swallows a bad hit. Refresh shot placement and the after the shot hub. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her. In this timber that mistake is a lost deer in a swamp that all looks the same after dark.
If you are not hunting
Weather dies up here. Have a daylight plan that is not “drive to camp and stare at the wall.”
Ottawa: waterfalls and the Black River National Forest Scenic Byway, Bond Falls, the visitor center at US-2 and US-45 in Watersmeet. Hiawatha West: Grand Island ferry from Munising if the boats are running, Bruno’s Run if you want to walk off a bad sit, Pictured Rocks as a neighbor (NPS rules). Hiawatha East: the Straits and St. Ignace if you already booked the bridge town. None of that is a reason to hunt a trailhead on Saturday of firearm week.
Where to stay, ice, and the meat pole
Pick a base for the unit you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet wool. Do not sleep in St. Ignace and hunt Ottawa. Do not sleep in Ironwood and “just run over” to Munising for the evening sit.
Ironwood, MI — Ottawa west. Grocery, rooms, processor, and a real town if lake-effect shuts a Superior-side road.
Watersmeet, MI — Ottawa east, junction of US-2 and US-45, visitor center. Quieter. Cook in the cabin.
Munising, MI — Hiawatha West. Tourist town in October. Book away from the lakeshore weekend crowd if you can. Hunt interior, not the ferry lot.
Manistique, MI — Hiawatha West south, Rapid River/Manistique district, US-2. Closer to Big Island Lake country than Marquette is.
St. Ignace, MI — Hiawatha East. Bridge town. Fine if that is your unit. A bad Ottawa base.
Marquette, MI — central UP services if you are bouncing west Hiawatha and state forest. Longer drive to Ironwood and to the east unit than people admit.
Call a processor before you shoot. UP shops book for Nov. 15. Ask if they are taking CWD-area deer and when you can actually pick up meat. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before. I keep a cheap plastic sled in the truck once snow is possible. Hardware-store version, about $40, has hauled more deer for me than any boutique pack frame. Field work is how to field dress a deer. If this forest is slammed
I do not invent a Hiawatha child URL. There is not one in the sitemap. Stay on this page and a Forest Service map.
First move: same forest, uglier access. Wet, steep, deadfall. Most orange quits at the first dry two-track.
Second move: switch UP forests on purpose. Ottawa slammed on US-2 → Hiawatha West interior off Munising or Rapid River, not the east-unit I-75 dump. Hiawatha East slammed → do not “just go west” without a town plan.
Third move: Michigan state forest and Commercial Forest Act land. CF is private timber open to hunting with posted exceptions. It is not national forest. I have burned a morning on a gate that was legal last year. Escanaba River and Lake Superior state forests are the other green. Ugly access still beats pretty timber.
Fourth move: a different state, a different tag. Chequamegon is the Wisconsin cousin — aspen age-class and a nine-day gun week, not Ottawa with a different hat. Terrain split is on Ottawa vs Chequamegon. Statewide Wisconsin is Wisconsin deer hunting. Pennsylvania’s Allegheny is a sibling public-land trip, not a same-weekend backup from Munising. Lease vs public is a different decision: public land vs lease.
Wildlife that actually lives here
Black bear, gray wolf, snowshoe hare, ruffed grouse. You will hear camp stories. Hang food, keep a clean truck bed, and hunt deer. Wolves are a UP fact, not a reason to rattle a 20-acre cedar swamp all day. Moose exist in the western UP in low numbers; they are not a deer tag. I do not sell a lynx sighting as a hunt plan.

Is Hiawatha the same hunt as Ottawa?
No. Ottawa is one western block with cedar, elevation, and lake-effect snow. Hiawatha is two disconnected units with Great Lakes shoreline, more jack pine on the east, and more I-75 pressure. The woods how-to for Ottawa is on its own page. This page is the choice.
Can I bait on Upper Peninsula national forest?
Michigan allows limited baiting in the UP (2 gallons, 10×10 scatter, in season). Forest Service rules still apply: no motorized travel off the MVUM to tend a pile, and Commercial Forest land is not USFS. The Lower Peninsula ban does not apply north of the bridge. Confirm the current DNR summary.
Can I ride an ATV out to my deer?
Not off designated routes on Hiawatha. The forest’s hunting notice says motorized retrieval off the MVUM is prohibited. Plan the drag before you shoot. A sled beats a citation.
Where should I stay for a first UP national forest trip?
Ironwood or Watersmeet if you picked Ottawa. Munising or Manistique if you picked Hiawatha West. St. Ignace only if you picked Hiawatha East. Marquette is a service town, not a substitute for being close to the parking area.
Is there a separate Hiawatha deer hunting URL on this site?
