Updated on September 7, 2026. Statewide dates, bags, CWD zones, and license math sit on the Mississippi deer hunting page. This page is what is different on De Soto: two ranger districts, five MDWFP wildlife-management-area overlays, a Camp Shelby impact closure with unexploded ordnance, legal dog seasons, and a Forest Service bait ban on dirt where private land next door can still feed. Confirm seasons on the MDWFP deer seasons table and Forest rules on the national-forest hunting page before you hang a stand.
| State | Mississippi — Gulf Coastal Plain pine, south of U.S. 84 and east of M.S. 35 (Southeast Deer Management Unit) |
|---|---|
| Manager | U.S. Forest Service, National Forests in Mississippi. Two ranger districts: De Soto in Wiggins and Chickasawhay in Laurel. MDWFP sets seasons, bags, and the five WMA overlays. |
| Species | White-tailed deer. Feral hogs and turkey are separate hunts, not a deer tag. |
| What differs here | No bait and no hunter-planted food plots on Forest Service land. Open public forest uses Southeast DMU dates with legal-buck-only gun on most days. Five WMAs (Leaf River, Chickasawhay, Little Biloxi, Red Creek, Mason Creek) run their own sheets and need a WMA User Permit. Camp Shelby Impact Closure Area is closed to all public use. Dogs are legal on designated gun windows. U.S. Forest Service bag in the Southeast DMU is one deer per day, three per season. |
| Pressure | Highest Thanksgiving weekend and the late-December dog gun on any two-track a sedan can reach, plus Leaf River and Red Creek parking. Lowest midweek archery, primitive-weapon week, the no-dog gun window, and anything with a last 400 yards of gallberry, palmetto, or young pine. |

Parents: Places · Public land deer hunting · Mississippi deer hunting. Siblings: Ottawa, Daniel Boone, Mark Twain, Cherokee. How any national forest hunts: hunting national forest land.
Who this forest is for
If you want longleaf and slash pine, tea-colored creeks, a legal buck you earned in palmetto, and you can live with hounds on the Thanksgiving gun opener, hunt De Soto.
If you need a freezer filled by Saturday night over a corn pile, this is the wrong forest. Mississippi lets a lot of private land hunt near feed. The Forest Service does not.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I grew up broke, so I learned public land before I ever paid for a lease, and I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. De Soto is not that Ozark hunt. It is not Ottawa swamp edges and it is not a Cherokee laurel bench. It is Gulf Coastal Plain pine with hardwood bottoms, pitcher-plant bogs, and a dog culture that is legal, loud, and older than my first rifle. The Mississippi tag, Sunday hunting, and CWD zones stay on the state guide. What follows is how I would actually spend three days on this Forest.
Two districts, five WMAs, and a firing range you do not walk into
Pick a district before you pick a motel. De Soto is Mississippi’s largest national forest — commonly listed around 518,000 acres — inside a bigger proclamation boundary that still holds private inholdings. The Supervisor’s Office is in Jackson. You will not get a paper map there at 5 a.m. on opening Saturday.
De Soto Ranger District (Wiggins). Office at 654 West Frontage Road, Wiggins, (601) 528-6160, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the southern block between Hattiesburg and the Gulf: Black Creek Wild and Scenic River, Black Creek Wilderness, Leaf Wilderness, Tuxachanie Trail, Bethel OHV, Airey Lake, Ashe Lake. Wiggins is surrounded by Forest on three sides. Stay in Wiggins if you want a short drive; stay in Hattiesburg if you want a grocery that is open after dark and a processor.
Chickasawhay Ranger District (Laurel). Office at 968 Highway 15 South, Laurel, (601) 428-0594, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Northern block toward the Leaf and Chickasawhay drainages: Turkey Fork, Longleaf Horse Trail, Little Tiger ATV. Stay in Laurel. I do not treat Laurel and Wiggins as a same-morning backup for each other. That is an hour of U.S. 49 and U.S. 84 you will not want after a 4:30 a.m. alarm.
Five MDWFP wildlife management areas sit on Forest Service dirt inside this Forest. They are not “just more green on onX.” They have yellow WMA signs, their own deer sheets, and a WMA User Permit ($30 plus fees for nonresidents; residents buy the state WMA permit). What a WMA overlay actually is lives on wildlife management areas.
- Leaf River WMA — about 41,350 to 41,411 acres in Perry County near Wiggins. Headquarters off Forest Service Road 353; permit station on Mars Hill Road; manager phone (601) 598-2323. Leaf River WMA page. Dog-hunting area is the portion west of Forest Service Road 315; the rest is still-hunt. Legal bucks on this WMA are 12 inches inside spread or a 15-inch main beam — tighter than the Southeast DMU’s 10 / 13 on open public land. MDWFP’s 2024–25 DMAP summary: 152 deer checked (91 bucks, 61 does) on 41,411 acres, about 272 acres per deer harvested. That is public-land density, not a Pike County soybean edge.
- Chickasawhay WMA — about 29,049 acres near Laurel (Jones County).
- Little Biloxi WMA — about 13,687 acres near McHenry (Stone and Harrison counties).
- Red Creek WMA — about 22,789 acres near Wiggins (Stone, George, and Jackson counties).
- Mason Creek WMA — about 26,075 acres near Richton (Greene County).
Acres and nearest towns are from the 2026–27 WMA information table, last checked September 7, 2026. Caston Creek, Sandy Creek, Bienville, and the rest of the 14 Forest Service WMAs in Mississippi are on other forests. Do not drive to Meadville thinking you are still on De Soto.
Camp Shelby Impact Closure Area is closed to all public use. Signs read “Danger, Military Firing Range, Unexploded Ordinance, DO NOT ENTER.” I do not treat a gate as a rumor. I treat it as a dud that can still kill you. The rest of the general forest is open to hunting except developed recreation sites and administrative ground.
Terrain: how deer actually use pine, bogs, and creek hardwoods
De Soto deer live in a landscape the Forest Service describes as gently rolling southern pine ridges and hardwood bottoms with clear, tea-colored streams. Elevations in Black Creek Wilderness run about 100 to 270 feet. That is not a 2,000-foot Appalachian face. It is why a “walk 200 yards off the road onto a pretty pine flat” fails and a nasty regeneration thicket works.
Here is what I do on this kind of ground. I hunt the places deer have to cross: a creek-hardwood finger that dumps into a pine thicket, the first gallberry or palmetto edge off a Forest two-track, the downwind lip of a prescribed-fire opening, and the nasty young pine that other people will not crawl. I do not sit the Black Creek sandbar, the Tuxachanie trailhead, or the Bethel OHV parking circle. The Forest hunting page tells you to stay at least 150 yards from trails, roads, recreation areas, buildings, and residences. That is also a pressure map. People cluster where walking is easy and the ground is dry.
Food is browse, greenbrier, palmetto, and mast in the creek bottoms — not a bean field. White oak and water oak drop in the hardwood drains will pull deer until the caps go stale. Then they spread into mixed pine and the edges of cuts and burns. The Forest publishes a daily prescribed-burn map. I use it to find age-class edges, not to drop a pin on a honey hole. If acorns are everywhere in the bottoms, I hunt cover. If they are spotty, I hunt the fresh caps. Habitat notes that keep me from hunting empty pine: deer habitat.
Hurricane Katrina hit this Forest harder than any other national forest in Mississippi. Later storms kept stacking blowdown and salvage cuts. The young pine and palmetto you hate to walk is where daylight deer still live when a pack or a two-track fills up. That is the same public-land problem as a nasty cedar thicket in the Ozarks or a swamp edge on Ottawa — different plants, same decision.
Bottoms look like water and travel. On pressured public land they also become human highways, especially along Black Creek landings and any sand road that Google Maps draws as a through-route. I hunt a bottom only when I can sit 10 to 30 yards off the trail and let scent dump into a bog, a posted inholding, or a creek I will not cross. A lot of land inside the proclamation boundary is still private. Yellow Forest signs and WMA yellow mark public. Red paint and no-trespassing signs mark inholdings. I do not guess at a paint color in the dark.
Access, parking, and opening weekend
Download the current Motor Vehicle Use Map for the district you are hunting. There are two sheets — De Soto and Chickasawhay — posted as 2024–2025 maps on the Forest maps page, last updated May 21, 2026. A two-track that looks open on a phone basemap can be gated, seasonal, or a private driveway. If a road is not on the MVUM, it is not open to your truck. ORVs and ATVs are legal only on designated routes. On Forest Service-owned WMAs you may use an ATV to retrieve a harvested deer or hog without a weapon. No loaded shoulder-fired firearm on an OHV. Forest Order 08-11-37-23-152-1 (alert posted July 10, 2026) also bans a loaded shoulder-fired weapon within 100 feet of the center line of any road or trail designated for motor vehicle traffic, and bans transporting an uncased loaded shoulder-fired firearm in a motor vehicle on a Forest road. Read the order. It is not camp lore.
November 21, 2026 is the Southeast DMU gun opener, and it is a dogs-allowed window. Every pull-off with a view of a pine flat will have a truck in it. I do not race a headlamp to Janice Landing or Turkey Fork. I park where it looks slightly wrong, walk past the first decent sign, and I want the last 200 yards wet, thick, or both. 0.6 to 1.5 miles is the band that starts to matter. If there is an OHV trailhead, a wild-and-scenic landing, or a wilderness trail register, I add distance. The Forest lists more than 60 miles of national recreation trail on Black Creek (about 39 miles) and Tuxachanie. I treat a blazed tread like a road.
Stands must be portable and cannot deface trees. You cannot hold exclusive rights to a tree on national forest land. WMAs add their own stand rules — check the sheet. I run a hang-on and sticks because that is what the rule allows and because I need to move when a two-track fills up. The Forest Order requires a fall-arrest harness to climb.
Find portable climbing sticks on Amazon Amazon associate tag checkcheck-20. We may earn a commission.
Wind, humidity, and dog season
A weather app that says “north 6 mph” is lying to you in a pine stand at 7:10 a.m. Humidity hangs. Thermals in 150 feet of relief are weaker than a Tellico holler, but scent still puddles in the first creek bottom and swirls at every cut edge. I hunt with a crosswind that dumps into a bog or a posted line, not into the thicket I think they are bedded in. If the wind is switching every three minutes, I do not force a tree. I still-hunt damp needles or I sit a fire edge where a bad swirl hits open sand, not a bedding thicket.
That is the same wind problem we cover on do deer move in the wind, just hotter. October archery here can still be the 80s. I sweat walking in, I change a shirt at the tree, and I hunt the first 90 minutes and the last 60. Timing sits is deer feeding times, then the creek’s mast, not a moon chart. Rain is a reason to hunt. Wet needles cover access. I slip the downwind edge of thick regeneration.
When dogs are legal, I do not get mad at the Forest. I change the sit. Deer pile into the nastiest palmetto and young pine the packs will not want to tear up, and they do it in daylight. I sit the downwind edge of that mess, 40 to 120 yards off, not in the middle of it, and I wear my 500 square inches of solid orange because I am not the only person in that section. If I came to still-hunt, I hunt archery, primitive-weapon week, the December 16–23 no-dog gun window, or a midweek after the first wave of trucks goes back to work.
Season notes versus the rest of Mississippi
Do not copy the whole state table onto this page. Hills, Delta, and North Central windows live on the Mississippi guide. What changes on De Soto:
- You are in the Southeast DMU unless you drove north of U.S. 84. Last checked September 7, 2026 on the MDWFP seasons table (updated August 14, 2026): archery starts Oct. 15, not Oct. 1; gun with dogs opens Nov. 21; a no-dog gun week sits Dec. 16–23; late archery / primitive runs into February. Most open-public gun days are legal bucks only. Velvet archery Sept. 11–13 needs the special permit. If this paragraph and the table disagree, the table wins.
- Open public land is not a WMA. Wildlife management areas are not “open public land.” General Forest uses the Southeast dates above. Leaf River, Chickasawhay, Little Biloxi, Red Creek, and Mason Creek use the WMA sheet. Confirm 2026–27 WMA dates on the MDWFP WMA page — I am not pasting a brochure that may have moved a Saturday.
- Legal buck on open public Forest in the Southeast DMU is 10 inches inside spread or a 13-inch main beam. Leaf River WMA is 12 / 15. Youth 15 and under get a break on private and some authorized lands; on open public land after the early youth window they follow legal-deer criteria. Source: white-tailed deer hunting.
- Bag on U.S. Forest Service land is one deer per day, not to exceed five per season except in the Southeast DMU, which is three per annual season. Antlerless daily cap in the Southeast DMU is one.
- Baiting is banned on national forest land at all times. No hunter food plots except by official personnel. Private-land feeders 100 yards off the paint do not make the Forest legal. If you want a feed hunt, lease it — that split is public land vs lease deer hunting.
- Dogs are legal on designated gun seasons on open public land. WMAs split dog ground from still-hunt ground (Leaf River: west of FS 315). Hog hunting with dogs has its own windows. Forest Order: 500 square inches of solid orange to hunt hogs during any firearm season.
- Hunter orange or pink is 500 square inches of solid unbroken fluorescent during any firearm deer season, whether you are carrying a rifle or a bow, except from a stand 12 feet or more up or a fully enclosed blind. Mesh and orange-camo do not count.
- CWD is in Mississippi (first found February 2018). The Harrison Management Zone includes Harrison County west of U.S. 49 plus pieces of Hancock. De Soto wraps both sides of 49 near the Gulf. If you hunt west of 49 in Harrison County, carcass transport and the feed ban (already true on the Forest) follow the zone. North Mississippi and Issaquena zones are a different drive. I still will not eat a sick-looking deer. If one looks wrong, use CWD symptoms and how to get your deer tested for CWD. Confirm on the MDWFP CWD page the week you drive — the map moves.
- Sunday hunting is legal. License: residents buy cheap All Game; nonresidents are looking at a $300 All Game plus a $100 deer permit (about $400 before the $75 archery / primitive permit and the $30 WMA permit). Seven-day All Game is $150. Buy it from MDWFP licenses. Out-of-state trip math: planning an out-of-state deer hunt.
I take the first legal deer that matches the hunt I drove for. Holding out for a Pike County rack on a Perry County pine bench is how you eat tag soup. Pine-woods deer run lighter than corn-fed Illinois deer — size the cooler with how much meat from a deer.
Where to sit without dropping a pin
I will not give you a GPS coordinate. I will give you spot types you can repeat after you look at the MVUM, the WMA sheet, and the paint.
Downwind edge of young pine or palmetto, 400 to 900 yards off easy access. Last stretch ugly. Set up so scent dumps into a bog or a posted line. This is the sit that still works when a pack or a two-track fills up.
Creek-hardwood finger that pinches into a pine thicket. Not the sandbar everyone canoes. The first oak drain off a Forest road that still has shiny droppings and tracks in the wet sand. Mast sit. Light grunt, not a rattling concert — you will call in orange before you call in a buck near Black Creek.
Prescribed-fire edge, two or three years old. Deer use the browse and the sight-line. Sit the downwind timber, not the blackened opening at 8 a.m. on a Saturday.
Wilderness pack-in on Black Creek or Leaf. Black Creek Wilderness is slightly more than 5,000 acres, designated 1984, east of Highway 29 about 10 miles north of Wiggins and 18 miles south of New Augusta. Foot travel only. About 10 miles of the Black Creek National Recreation Trail run through it. Elevations 100 to 270 feet. Hardwood floodplain, oxbows, cypress. Leaf Wilderness is the small 940-acre unit on the Leaf River floodplain. Both are a pack-out, not a shortcut around a gate. I hunt the edge of that quiet, not the trail tread.
WMA still-hunt side on a dog weekend. On Leaf River that means east of FS 315 while the west side is running dogs. Read the current map. A still-hunt boundary is a real line, not a suggestion from a guy at the gas station.
Public-land tactics that work on any of these sits live on how to hunt public land deer and how to beat the crowds on opening day. This Forest versus a farm is the north woods vs farmland problem with pine instead of aspen.
If you are not hunting
The same land is a trip if the wind dies or you brought family. Black Creek is Mississippi’s only National Wild and Scenic River — 21 miles of black water, white sandbars, and a relaxed float from Moody’s Landing toward Fairley Bridge. Big Creek Landing is the northern terminus for the float and the trail; check the current rec-site status before you count on a bathroom. Tuxachanie Trail out of Airey Lake is the hike people actually finish. Ashe Lake is an 8-acre pond built for Ashe Nursery, bass and bream, not a deer sit. Bethel is 43 miles of ATV trail 50 inches or narrower — treat it as a noise and pressure map, not a secret. Buttercup Flats is the pitcher-plant savanna; Ragland Hills is the rare steep hardwood toe. Paul B. Johnson State Park outside Hattiesburg is the rainy-day family backup. Recreation.gov is for developed sites, not a stand reservation. Hunters, paddlers, OHV riders, and opening-weekend trucks are all users. Hunt like you share it, because you do.
U.S. 49 after dark is a real collision corridor — what to do if you hit a deer. Town-edge gardens in Hattiesburg are a different deer problem than a pine thicket; start at do deer eat hostas if that is the question you actually have.
Where to stay, ice, and the meat pole
Pick a base for the district you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery that is open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet clothes. Ice is a town problem in a 70-degree November — buy it the night before. Call a processor before you shoot. Ask when you can actually pick up meat. A De Soto drag through palmetto can be 600 yards that is also a bog.
Wiggins, MS — De Soto Ranger District jump-off. Forest on three sides. Fuel and a motel. Closest pillow to Leaf River, Red Creek, and Black Creek. Plan on driving to Hattiesburg for a real grocery and a processor.
Hattiesburg, MS — Grocery, rooms, hospital, processors. Best if you are hunting the north end of the De Soto District or you want a town when the weather dies. Longer dawn drive than Wiggins.
Laurel, MS — Chickasawhay District, Turkey Fork, Chickasawhay WMA. Grocery and rooms without living on the Coast.
Gulfport, MS — South end, Little Biloxi and the Harrison County toe. Coast rates in October; book before you brag about the trip. Watch the CWD line west of U.S. 49.
Richton, MS — Mason Creek / east-side access. Quieter than Hattiesburg. Confirm a processor before you count on one.
I process my own deer in the garage, taught by my uncle who was a butcher, and I still call a shop when I am 0.8 miles into a bog. Field work is how to field dress a deer. Shot angles in thick pine are why I reread shot placement and the after the shot hub before I climb. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her. I wait now. Tag it: how to tag a deer. Ticks here are not a joke — lone star and the rest — so I treat clothes and I wear gaiters in October.
Find tick gaiters on Amazon Amazon associate tag checkcheck-20. We may earn a commission.
If this Forest is slammed
If every Leaf River two-track has a truck at 5 a.m., I do not drive home. I go to a nastier access on the same district, I hunt general Forest instead of the WMA parking, or I slide to Chickasawhay gravel and accept the Laurel drive. Homochitto (Meadville office, (601) 384-5876), Bienville, Holly Springs, Tombigbee, and Delta are the other national forests in Mississippi — name plus the Forest Service Mississippi page. No live WorldDeer Homochitto or Kisatchie unit URL yet, so I am not inventing those slugs. Pascagoula River WMA (about 39,150 acres near Vancleave) is a different MDWFP sheet. Timber-company hunts: timber company land in the South. Neighboring trips: Alabama, Florida, Louisiana. Corps dirt: Army Corps of Engineers land.
Wildlife that actually lives here
Black bears use south Mississippi, including this Forest. Uncommon, not a camp story, and they will find a gut pile at a landing. Feral hogs are legal and numerous; they are not a deer plan, and Forest Order orange still applies during firearm season. Gopher tortoises and red-cockaded woodpeckers are why some longleaf stands look park-like — habitat work, not a reason to drive into marked cavity trees. Cottonmouths use the same creek you want to still-hunt in October. I am here for white-tailed deer.
FAQ
Do I need a draw tag to hunt deer on De Soto National Forest?
No, not on general Forest. A Mississippi hunting license plus the deer permit (nonresidents) covers open public Forest under Southeast DMU dates. The five WMA overlays need a WMA User Permit and follow the WMA sheet. Some other Mississippi WMAs run draws; Leaf River deer hunting is not a statewide lottery. Confirm on WMA draw hunts if you are mixing properties.
Can I hunt over bait on De Soto?
No. Baiting and hunting over bait are not allowed on national forest lands. No hunter food plots. Private land across the red paint is a different rule and is not this hunt.
Are dogs legal?
Yes, on designated guns-with-dogs seasons on open public land, and on the dog portion of WMAs that allow it. Leaf River’s dog area is west of Forest Service Road 315. Still-hunters should pick archery, primitive, the no-dog gun week, or the nasty cover on a dog day and wear orange.
Can I walk into Camp Shelby?
Not the Impact Closure Area. Unexploded ordnance. If the sign says do not enter, you do not enter. The rest of the Forest is not automatically closed because the base is nearby — stay on the MVUM and the paint.
How far do I need to walk?
I start taking it seriously at about 0.6 miles, and I feel better at 1.0 to 1.5 miles if the last stretch is wet or thick. Easy Black Creek or Bethel walking does not count as distance. If the walk is pleasant the whole way, expect company.
When is firearm deer season here?
Southeast DMU, 2026–27: gun with dogs opens Nov. 21. A still-hunt gun week sits Dec. 16–23. Primitive is Dec. 2–15. Late archery / primitive runs into February. Legal bucks only on most open-public gun days. Confirm on the MDWFP deer seasons table, last checked September 7, 2026.

I am not a guide. I am a public-land hunter who has eaten tag soup on more than one pine ridge. If you pick a district, hunt a nasty thicket off the easy two-track, skip the landing parking lot, keep a grocery and a processor in the same town as your pillow, and read the WMA sheet before you assume statewide dates, De Soto will give you a shot. When it does, slow down, make it count, and drag toward high ground.
The state-by-state index is deer hunting by state. Wisconsin north-woods public is a different sport — Chequamegon — if you are building a multi-state year.
