Who this forest is for
If you want ridges, rhododendron, a legal deer you earned on your legs, and a WMA sheet you actually read, hunt Cherokee and accept fewer deer per square mile than a Henry County soybean edge.
If you need a freezer filled by Saturday night, do not start here. Hunt a Unit 1 or 2 weekday west of the Plateau, then come east when you want the woods trip.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. Cherokee is the Tennessee version of that Ozark hunt — same benches and leeward points — except the Forest is more than 660,000 acres, Great Smoky Mountains National Park cuts it in half, and TWRA, not a statewide calendar screenshot, is what you hunt by.
This is not a cornfield. It is not Ottawa swamp edges either. It is Southern Appalachian hardwood with laurel hells, trout water in the bottoms, and bear country that will steal a camera if you are dumb enough to hang corn. What follows is how I would actually spend three days on this Forest.
Two forests, not one blob
Pick a side of the Park before you pick a motel. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is not a hunt. Cherokee is. North of the Park and south of the Park are different ranger districts, different TWRA regions, and different drives. I do not treat them as a same-morning backup for each other.
Watauga (Unicoi / Johnson City / Elizabethton). Northernmost district. Office at 4400 Unicoi Drive, Unicoi — I-26 exit 32. Iron Mountain, Pond Mountain, Watauga Lake, South Holston country, and a long piece of the Appalachian Trail. This is the district I send a first-timer who wants Forest Service two-tracks without committing to Tellico gravel. Stay in Unicoi or Johnson City. Construction has been limiting the district office to Tuesday and Thursday walk-ins; call (423) 735-1500 before you count on a paper map from the counter.
Unaka (Greeneville / Nolichucky). North zone, against the Park’s northern edge. Office at 4900 Asheville Highway (SR 70), Greeneville. Bald Mountains, Unaka Mountain, Sampson Mountain Wilderness (10,895 acres), and Roan high country that hunts like a tourist destination in June and a windy spruce ridge in November. Stay in Greeneville. Permits at that office have been Monday and Friday only — do not show up Wednesday and argue with a locked door.
Tellico (Tellico Plains / Bald River / Citico). South zone. Office at 250 Ranger Station Road, Tellico Plains. Tellico River Road (Forest Road 210), Bald River Gorge Wilderness (3,791 acres), Upper Bald River Wilderness (9,037 acres), Citico Creek Wilderness (16,213 acres). North River check station is 2500 River Road. This is the steep pack-out. Stay in Tellico Plains.
Ocoee (Benton / Parksville / Georgia line). South zone. Office at 3171 Highway 64, Benton. Ocoee River, Big Frog Wilderness (8,366 acres), Little Frog Mountain, Starr Mountain. Supervisor’s Office is 2800 North Ocoee Street in Cleveland, not in the woods. Stay in Benton if you are hunting the Ocoee; Cleveland if you want grocery and a processor and you will drive.
The Forest Service is responsible for habitat. TWRA sets seasons, bags, and the permit. That is not trivia. It is why a statewide gun screenshot will put you in a closed antlerless hunt on North Cherokee, or in a bear reserve on South Cherokee that is shut to all big game while the hounds are running.
Terrain: how deer actually use these ridges
Cherokee deer live in a landscape of steep forested faces, rhododendron and mountain laurel thickets, oak-hickory benches, and river gorges that drop hard enough that a straight-up drag is a medical plan, not a meat plan. Relief is a couple thousand feet from a Tellico bottom to a Unicoi bald. That is why a ridge-top Skyway hunt fails and a bench hunt works.
Here is what I do on this kind of ground, the same call I make in the Ozarks and on Mark Twain.
I hunt the places deer have to cross: a saddle between two points, the end of a bench that dumps into a steep cut, the first thick laurel edge off a ridge road, and the leeward third of a face when the wind is up. I do not sit the pretty oak flat 200 yards from Indian Boundary or Bald River Falls. Cherokee WMA rule: hunting or discharging a firearm is prohibited within 150 yards of a developed recreation area, campsite, residence, building, or occupied area, and across or on a National Forest system road. That is not a suggestion. It also tells you where the people cluster.
Bottoms look like water and travel. On pressured public land they also become human highways — Tellico River Road, Citico, the AT tread. I hunt a bottom only when I can sit 10 to 30 feet above the trail and let scent dump into dead space — a gorge wall, a posted inholding, or a lake arm I will not cross. A lot of land inside the proclamation boundary is still private. Yellow paint and WMA signs mark the co-op. Posted red-paint and no-trespassing signs mark the inholdings. I do not guess at a paint color in the dark.
Food is mast and browse, not beans. White oak drop under a single hot tree will pull deer until the caps go stale. Then they spread into mixed hardwoods and the edges of old cuts and prescribed-fire openings. The Forest publishes a prescribed-fire map. I use it to find age-class edges, not to drop a pin on a “honey hole.” If acorns are everywhere, I hunt cover and funnels. If they are spotty, I hunt the fresh caps. Laurel and rhododendron are bedding, not a postcard. If you will not crawl 40 yards into it, you are hunting the edge the other guy already walked. Habitat notes that keep me from hunting empty oak flats: deer habitat.
Access, parking, and opening weekend
Download the Motor Vehicle Use Map for the district you are hunting. There are four sheets — Watauga, Unaka, Tellico, Ocoee — last posted as 2024 maps on the Forest maps page. A two-track that looks open on a phone basemap can be gated, seasonal, or a private driveway. Some roads normally open to public travel close December 15, 2026 through March 31, 2027. Seasonal winter gates are a resource closure, not a conspiracy. If a road is not on the MVUM, it is not open to your truck.
As of July 23, 2026, a flood washout still has Citico Creek Road (NFSR 35-1) closed to motorized traffic from Indian Boundary toward Camp 11, and Doublecamp–Jake Best Road (NFSR 2659) closed with it. Jake Best Campground has been listed open; Double Camp has been listed closed. That is an active Forest alert, last updated August 21, 2026. I do not plan a Citico truck hunt until Tellico District (423-397-8455) says the road is a road again. Foot access into Citico Creek Wilderness is still a pack-out, not a shortcut around a gate.
November 21, 2026 is the statewide gun opener, and it is also South Cherokee’s first gun window. Every pull-off with a view of an oak flat will have a truck in it. I do not race a headlamp to Bald River Falls. I park where it looks slightly wrong, walk past the first decent sign, and I want the last 200 yards steep, thick, or both. 0.6 to 1.5 miles is the band that starts to matter. If there is an Appalachian Trail trailhead, a Cherohala overlook, or a waterfall lot, I add distance. The Forest lists more than 700 miles of trail, including about 150 miles of the AT. I treat a white-blazed tread like a road.
Named South Cherokee access on the TWRA sheet is for finding the WMA, not for hanging a stand in the parking circle: Bee House Gap, Eagle Gap, Cantrell Bridge / Bald River, Basin Gap, Beech Gap, Grassy Gap, Lower Crowder Field, Farr Gap, Buck Bald, Indian Boundary, North River check station, Citico Creek check station. Indian Boundary is a 96-acre lake rec area with a campground. That is a family trip, not a deer sit.
Stands must be portable. TWRA WMA rule: no wire, nails, or other metal in a tree; no hunting from a permanent attached stand; mark the stand with your TWRA ID number; unattended personal property, including stands, more than 24 hours needs the area manager’s approval. I run a hang-on and sticks because that is what the rule allows and because I need to move when a two-track fills up.

Wind and thermals on gorges
A weather app that says “west 6 mph” is lying to you in a Tellico holler. Morning thermals crawl up the face as the hardwoods warm. Evening thermals fall. Midday they swirl at the gorge lip and on every Skyway bald. I hunt lower in the morning with a crosswind that dumps into a cut, and I hunt higher in the evening so falling air carries scent off the travel line. If the wind is switching every three minutes, I do not force a tree. I still-hunt damp leaves or I sit a bench where a bad swirl hits a gorge wall, not a bedding thicket.
That is the same thermal problem as Daniel Boone and Allegheny, just with more laurel. When I want a reminder of how deer use wind, I reread do deer move in the wind and then I still pick the leeward third of the ridge. Rain is a reason to hunt, not a reason to sit in Cleveland. Wet leaves cover access. I slip the downwind edge of thick cover. Timing sits is deer feeding times, then the county’s mast, not a moon chart.
Season notes versus the rest of Tennessee
Do not copy the whole state table onto this page. The 2026–27 statewide archery, muzzleloader, and Nov. 21–Jan. 3 gun windows live on the Tennessee guide. What changes on Cherokee:
- It is a WMA. You need a Tennessee license plus the right big-game supplement — or Sportsman / nonresident All Game — and a non-quota WMA big-game permit. Cherokee-only non-quota is $18 and is not valid on any other WMA. The $24 WMA Big Game permit covers Cherokee plus the rest. Sportsman and Lifetime skip the non-quota permit. Youths under 6 may not hunt big game on a WMA. Buy it at GoOutDoorsTennessee.
- South Cherokee does not use statewide deer dates. Last checked September 7, 2026 on the South Cherokee WMA sheet: deer/bear archery Sept. 19–Oct. 1 (one deer, antlered or antlerless); muzzleloader Oct. 26–Nov. 1 (one deer, antlered only); young sportsman gun Oct. 24–25 (one deer, either sex); gun Nov. 21–29 and Dec. 14–28 (two deer, antlered only). Statewide gun running through Jan. 3 does not give you extra South Cherokee days. If this paragraph and the WMA sheet disagree, the sheet wins.
- North Cherokee uses statewide dates, with a hard antlerless cut. Archery antlerless bag four; muzzleloader antlerless bag one; young sportsman antlerless bag two; gun closed to antlerless. Antlered bag is two and counts toward the statewide cap. Source: North Cherokee WMA.
- Bear reserves are a deer problem on South Cherokee. When the dog-bear season is open, the Ocoee and Tellico bear reserves are closed to all big-game hunting — not just bear. 2026 dog-bear windows include Oct. 3–4, Oct. 10–16, Nov. 2–6, Nov. 30–Dec. 13, and Dec. 31–Jan. 3, 2027. If you hear a pack on the Tellico, you are not in a deer sit anymore. You are in someone else’s bear hunt. Party-dog hunts (Upper Tellico, Lower Tellico, Upper Bald River, Lower Bald River) are a July quota, 75 permits per party, not a walk-on deer plan.
- Baiting is banned on the Forest at all times. Same as every Tennessee WMA. Corn on Cherokee teaches bears where your camera lives. The 2026 private-land Deer Bait Privilege License does not help you here.
- CWD is not why you are deboning on this Forest. The CWD Management Zone is every county west of the Tennessee River. Cherokee’s east-Tennessee counties are outside that zone as of the September 7, 2026 check. I still will not eat a sick-looking deer. - Sunday hunting is legal. Hunter orange or pink is 500 square inches on the upper body and head during big-game gun and muzzleloader hunts. Archery-only days are exempt unless they overlap a gun bear season. Tag before you drag; check in by midnight.
I take the first legal deer that matches the hunt I drove for. Holding out for a Pike County rack on a Monroe County laurel bench is how you eat tag soup. Mountain deer run lighter than corn-fed Illinois deer — size the cooler with how much meat from a deer.
Where to sit without dropping a pin
I will not give you a GPS coordinate. I will give you spot types you can repeat after you look at the MVUM, the WMA sheet, and the paint.
Leeward bench off a ridge road. 400 to 900 yards, last stretch ugly. Set up 20 to 40 yards off the bench on the downhill side so scent dumps below the travel line. This is the Mark Twain sit, transplanted onto Unaka and Tellico sandstone and schist.
Saddle that connects two bedding pockets. Not the lowest, cleanest gap on the map. The one with rhododendron, blowdowns, or a gorge on one side that makes people groan. Rut sit. Light grunt, not a rattling concert — you will call in orange before you call in a buck near a Skyway pull-off.
First thick cover off easy access during gun week. When shots start at 7:05 a.m., deer dive into the nastiest laurel, not off Bald River Falls. Hunt the downwind edge of that mess, 40 to 120 yards off, not in the middle of it.
Wilderness edge, not the trail register. Citico Creek, Bald River Gorge, Upper Bald River, Big Frog, Pond Mountain, Sampson Mountain. More than 86,000 acres of this Forest is Wilderness — about 13 percent. No wheels, no e-bikes, no “I’ll just drag to the truck.” If you shoot deep, you are quartering. Hunt a drainage over from the popular tread.
North Cherokee gun sit. Antlerless is closed. I am not wasting a November Saturday on a doe trail and calling it a plan. I hunt travel between bedding thickets and I am honest about passing a legal antlerless deer I cannot shoot.

If you are not hunting
The same land is a trip if the wind dies or you brought family. Bald River Falls is the 90-foot roadside waterfall people actually drive Forest Road 210 to see — go do that from town, then hunt somewhere else. Indian Boundary is the lake-and-campground day. Cherohala Skyway (TN 165 / NC 143) is the 43-mile National Scenic Byway toward Robbinsville; the overlooks are for photos, not a Saturday gun sit. Ocoee Whitewater Center on Highway 64 is the 1996 Olympic leftover and a rainy-day walk. Roan high country and Carver’s Gap are the north-end balds; they hunt poorly on a foliage Saturday. Cleveland holds the Supervisor’s Office if you need a map before you commit to a district.
Hikers, paddlers, and opening-weekend trucks are all users. Hunt like you share it, because you do.
Where to stay, ice, and the meat pole
Pick a base for the district you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery that is open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet clothes. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before. Call a processor before you shoot. Eastern shops book around quota hunts and bear weekends. Ask when you can actually pick up meat.
Tellico Plains, TN — South Cherokee, Tellico District. North River check station is 2500 River Road. Grocery, rooms, and you are not commuting from Knoxville to a 5 a.m. Bald River sit.
Benton, TN — Ocoee District office is 3171 Highway 64. Closer to Big Frog and the river corridor than Cleveland is. Smaller town; plan groceries.
Cleveland, TN — Supervisor’s Office at 2800 North Ocoee Street. South-zone HQ town if you want a real grocery, a processor, and a highway if a Tellico gravel road turns into a recovery.
Unicoi, TN — Watauga District, I-26. North Cherokee without sleeping in Pigeon Forge. Cook in the cabin.
Greeneville, TN — Unaka District office on SR 70. Quieter north-zone base if you are hunting Bald Mountain / Nolichucky country and you want to skip Johnson City traffic.
A straight-up drag out of a Bald River face is a bad plan. I side-hill to a ridge road even if it adds a third of a mile. I process my own deer in the garage, taught by my uncle who was a butcher, and I still call a shop when I am 1.1 miles into Citico. Field work is how to field dress a deer. If this Forest is slammed
If every Indian Boundary two-track has a truck at 5 a.m., I do not drive home. I go to a nastier access on the same district — a Wilderness trail instead of a paved overlook, Farr Gap instead of the Falls lot, a gated-road walk instead of Cherohala. I do not invent a secret WMA. I do not drive Citico Creek Road while the flood closure is up. If I need deer on the ground, I leave the mountains and hunt a Unit 1 or 2 WMA on a weekday — that plan is on the Tennessee page, not here. Catoosa is a midweek Plateau backup from Crossville, not a same-morning hop from Tellico Plains. Kentucky’s Daniel Boone is the sibling woods hunt if you are building a multi-state public-land year. It is not a Saturday backup from Benton. Pisgah, Nantahala, and George Washington–Jefferson do not have dedicated WorldDeer unit URLs yet; they are named on the Appalachia comparison and on their state pages. Use those, or the official forest map, instead of a 404.
Wildlife that actually lives here
Black bears use this Forest. That is why the reserves exist and why I hang food, I do not leave gut piles at a trailhead, and I do not pretend a snapped stick is always a deer. Wild boar are listed game here; incidental hog taking is allowed on deer and bear hunts with the weapon legal for that hunt, except you do not take hogs in the bear reserves during bear season. They are not a deer plan. Ruffed grouse and squirrel are the other Forest Service listed small game. I am here for white-tailed deer.
FAQ
Do I need a draw tag to hunt deer on Cherokee National Forest?
No. An annual Tennessee hunting license plus the right big-game supplement — or Sportsman / nonresident All Game — plus a non-quota WMA big-game permit covers Forest deer hunting under the North or South Cherokee sheet. The $18 Cherokee-only permit is valid only here. Bear party-dog hunts are the quota. Elk is a North Cumberland quota, not a Cherokee deer tag.
Can I hunt South Cherokee on the statewide January gun days?
Not after Dec. 28, 2026 on the current sheet. South Cherokee gun is Nov. 21–29 and Dec. 14–28, antlered only. Statewide gun through Jan. 3 is a different hunt. Confirm on the South Cherokee WMA page.
Is baiting legal on the Forest?
No. Not corn, not minerals, not a “just this once” pile. Public-land baiting is closed statewide. Private land outside the Forest is a different rule and is not this hunt.
How far do I need to walk?
I start taking it seriously at about 0.6 miles, and I feel better at 1.0 to 1.5 miles if the last stretch is steep or thick. Easy Cherohala or AT walking does not count as distance. If the walk is pleasant the whole way, expect company.
Can I hunt a bear reserve during deer season?
On South Cherokee, no — not when the dog-bear season is open. Those reserves close to all big-game hunting for those dates. Outside those windows, read the current sheet and the reserve boundary (Ocoee Reserve is south of Ocoee Lake/River to the Georgia line; Tellico Reserve is the Monroe County block described on the WMA page). I do not hunt a “quiet” ridge that is actually a reserve.
Can I hunt Sunday?
Yes. Wear 500 square inches of orange or pink on gun and muzzleloader hunts.

I am not a guide. I am a public-land hunter who has eaten tag soup on more than one ridge. If you pick a district, hunt a bench or a nasty cover edge off the easy two-track, stay out of the 150-yard rec-site buffer, read the South Cherokee dates instead of the statewide screenshot, and keep a grocery and a processor in the same town as your pillow, Cherokee will give you a shot. When it does, slow down, make it count, and side-hill the deer out.
