Who this forest is for
If you want oak-hickory ridges, a real walk, and Indiana’s only national forest, hunt the Hoosier and accept fewer deer per hour than a northern Indiana woodlot, private inholdings that will make a liar out of the green on your phone, and a long drag out of a hollow.
If you need a freezer filled by Saturday night, do not start here. Get permission on a farm-woodlot, or hunt a weekday Fish & Wildlife area, then come south when you want the woods trip. That split is the whole point of north woods vs farmland deer hunting — the Hoosier is the hill-country half of Indiana, not a swamp and not a bean field.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. The Hoosier is the Indiana version of that Ozark hunt — same benches and leeward points — except the Forest Service owns about 204,000 acres inside a much bigger proclamation patchwork, the Deam Wilderness is the only Congressionally designated wilderness in the state, and a posted line can sit 80 yards off a Forest road that looked public the whole way in. What follows is how I would actually spend three days here.
Two districts, nine counties, not one blob
Pick a district before you pick a motel. The Forest is not one continuous block. The Forest Service’s own fact sheet (March 2026) calls it 204,000 acres spread across nine counties from Monroe Lake to the Ohio River: Brown, Crawford, Dubois, Jackson, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Orange, and Perry. Offices are in Bedford and Tell City. It sits inside a two-hour drive of Indianapolis, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Evansville, which is why the easy trailheads are not a secret.
Brownstown District (Bedford / Bloomington). North and central. Supervisor’s Office at 811 Constitution Avenue, Bedford, 812-275-5987. Deam Wilderness, Hardin Ridge on Monroe Lake, Hickory Ridge Lookout Tower, Nebo Ridge, Pate Hollow, and the Brown County edge. This is the district I send a first-timer who wants Forest Service two-tracks without committing to Perry County gravel. Stay in Bloomington if you want grocery hours; stay in Bedford if you want a shorter drive to interior roads.
Tell City District (Tell City / Ohio River). South. 248 15th Street, Tell City, 812-547-7051. German Ridge, Tipsaw Lake, Indian-Celina, Saddle Lake, Oriole, Birdseye, Buzzard Roost, Hemlock Cliffs, and Mano Point on the Ohio. Steeper. More hollow. Fewer IU football Saturdays. Stay in Tell City or French Lick depending on whether you are hunting the river hills or Orange County.
The Forest was pieced together starting with a 40-acre purchase near Houston in 1935 and was proclaimed a national forest in 1951. That history is why it still hunts like a quilt, not like a western block.
Terrain: how deer actually use these ridges
Hoosier deer live on steps, not in cathedral oak. White oak and black oak on the south and west faces, mixed hardwoods in the coves, greenbrier and rhododendron in the nasty stuff, and cut edges from Forest thinning and prescribed fire. The Forest Service administers about 15 percent of the watersheds that feed Monroe Lake — roughly 51,000 acres of forest — and I use those age-class edges the same way I use a cut on Mark Twain: hunt the contact line, not the pretty flat.
I hunt saddles, the end of a bench that dumps into a hollow, the first thick greenbrier edge off a ridge road, and the leeward third of a face when the wind is up. I do not sit the oak flat 200 yards from Hardin Ridge, a horse camp, or a wilderness trailhead. Forest rule: no discharging a firearm or a bow within 150 yards of a developed recreation site, a residence, or any place people are likely to be, and not from, into, or across a parking area, trail, boat ramp, road, or body of water. That is not a suggestion. It also tells you where the people cluster.
Bottoms look like travel and become human highways. I hunt a bottom only when I can sit 10 to 30 feet above the trail and dump scent into a cliff, a lake arm, or a posted inholding I will not cross. Karst is everywhere. Caves on this Forest are closed August 16 through May 14 to protect hibernating bats — that window covers the entire deer season. I do not hunt a cave mouth or build a fire in a rock shelter. Food is mast and browse, not beans. If acorns are everywhere, I hunt cover and funnels. If they are spotty, I hunt the fresh caps. Timing sits: deer feeding times, then the ridge. Habitat notes: deer habitat.
Access, parking, and opening weekend
Download the Motor Vehicle Use Map for the district you are hunting. A two-track that looks open on a phone basemap can be gated, seasonal, or a private driveway. Printed trail maps are being phased out of kiosks; the Forest wants you to download a trail PDF, buy the National Geographic map, or photograph the trailhead sign. Office topos are $8 and they still may not match today’s ownership. I treat the MVUM as the legal road list and a current ownership layer as the hunt list. Off-road vehicles are not allowed. E-bikes count as motor vehicles here — they go where the MVUM allows motors, not down Nebo.
Private land is interspersed. The Forest Service says it out loud: get written permission or do not hunt it. About 1,450 miles of boundary is a trespass factory. I have walked off green into posted without meaning to. A wounded deer does not give you a right to cross. I turn around at the mailbox, and if a retrieve is on the other side I call a conservation officer through central dispatch at 812-837-9536 rather than climbing a fence.
November 14, 2026 is the statewide firearms opener — 16 days, first Saturday after Veterans Day. Every Hoosier two-track with a turnout will have a truck in it. That is not a reason to stay home. It is a reason to hunt like public land and like opening day on public land: hunters cluster near roads, peak on opening weekend, and quit when the walk gets steep. I park where it looks slightly wrong, walk past the first decent sign, and I want the last 200 yards steep, thick, or both. 400 to 900 yards is the band that starts to matter. If I can still hear truck doors at 6:40 a.m., I am too close to the gravel.
Trailheads I treat like roads: Nebo Ridge (Nashville / Brown County), Hickory Ridge (Norman), German Ridge (Derby), Two Lakes Loop at Indian-Celina, and anything inside the Deam. Hikers, horses, and mountain bikes share more than 260 miles of trail; horses and bikes need a Forest trail-use permit. I do not sit a white-blazed tread on a Saturday in October and then complain about people.
Check the Forest alerts the week you drive. As of this writing the Forest has a seasonal cave closure, a Peninsula Trail closure, a Tipsaw Trail bridge out, and a section of Tower Ridge Road closed for safety. Hickory Ridge Lookout Tower — 110 feet of steel, 123 steps, the last of eight fire towers on this Forest — currently wants Hunter Creek Road, not the closed stretch of Tower Ridge. Parking at the tower is limited. I do not hunt a full lot.

Wind and thermals in a Hoosier hollow
A weather app that says “west 6 mph” is lying to you in a hollow. Morning thermals crawl up the face as the oak duff warms. Evening thermals fall. Midday they swirl at the ridge lip. I hunt lower in the morning with a crosswind that dumps into a cut, and higher in the evening so falling air carries scent off the travel line. If the wind switches every three minutes I do not force a tree — I still-hunt damp leaves or sit a bench where a bad swirl hits a cliff or a posted inholding, not a bedding thicket. Season notes versus the rest of Indiana
Do not copy the whole state table onto this page. The 2026–27 archery window (Oct. 1–Jan. 3, 2027), 16-day firearms season (Nov. 14–29, 2026), muzzleloader (Dec. 5–20, 2026), OTC licenses, Sunday hunting, and the bait ban are on the Indiana guide. What actually changes on this dirt:
- Antlerless with a firearm during firearms season is legal on the Hoosier if you hold a multi-season antlerless, bundle, youth, or lifetime license. The firearms license itself is still antlered-only. The “no doe with a gun” rule is for Division of Fish & Wildlife properties, Mississinewa Lake, Salamonie Lake, and Patoka Lake — not for National Forest land. Do not confuse a Hoosier ridge with the Patoka Lake property next door. Confirm the current list on the county antlerless bag page.
- County antlerless caps still apply. Most of these nine counties sit in the 3- or 4-deer band. DNR edits the map when EHD or CWD data moves. I do not paste the table. Check it the week you hunt.
- Baiting is illegal on public and private land statewide — corn, apples, salt, mineral blocks. The ground stays baited 10 days after you pull it. Crop fields from normal farming are not bait. I hunt without a pile.
- CWD is not the Hoosier story yet. The Positive Area is the northeast cluster around the April 2024 LaGrange detection. The Enhanced Surveillance Zone is the southwest around Posey. Confirm the March 2026 map on the DNR CWD page before you assume a Perry County deer needs a cooler. Testing is free and voluntary. - Rifles are legal on this public land in 2026 under Senate Enrolled Act 280: .219-inch (5.56 mm) bullet diameter or larger, no more than 10 of those cartridges on you, no full-metal-jacket. I still will not take a long poke with a bad backstop. Most honest shots here are inside 80 yards.
- Hunter orange is required during youth, firearms, and muzzleloader seasons. Solid orange, not camo-orange. A ground blind of man-made material on or within four feet of the ground needs 144 square inches of orange visible on each side.
- No hunting in recreation areas with designated boundaries, in Pioneer Mothers Memorial Forest, or where posted. Pioneer Mothers is an 88-acre old-growth oak-hickory Research Natural Area and National Natural Landmark just south of Paoli on State Road 37. No hunting, no camping, no target shooting, no horses, no bikes. Hunt around it. Do not hunt it.

Where to sit without dropping a pin
I will not give you a GPS coordinate. Pins on public land become parking lots. These sit types repeat from a Bedford two-track, a Tell City gravel spur, a Deam wilderness trailhead, or an Orange County ridge.
Leeward bench off a ridge road. 400 to 900 yards, last stretch ugly. Set up 20 to 40 yards off the bench on the downhill side so scent dumps below the travel line. This is the Mark Twain sit, transplanted onto Hoosier oak.
Saddle that connects two bedding pockets. Not the lowest, cleanest gap on the map. The one with rhododendron, blowdowns, or a cliff on one side that makes people groan. Rut sit. Light grunt, not a rattling concert — you will call in orange before you call in a buck near Nebo or Hickory Ridge.
First thick cover off easy access during gun week. When shots start at 7:05 a.m., deer dive into the nastiest hollow, not off the scenic overlook. Hunt the downwind edge of that mess, 40 to 120 yards off, not in the middle of it. Public-land tactics that work on any of these sits live on how to hunt public land deer.
Deam Wilderness interior, midweek. 12,953 acres, designated 1982, Brownstown District, Brown / Jackson / Lawrence / Monroe. Thirty-six miles of trail. No wheels, no motors, no generators, group size 10. Do not park along Tower Ridge Road. Do not camp within a half mile of Monroe Lake’s edge unless you are in a designated Forest campsite. Do not shore a motorboat on the wilderness shoreline. Pack-out is real. If you shoot deep, you are quartering. Blackwell Campground is the overflow parking and free camp with vault toilets, not a deer pin. I do not hunt Grubb Ridge or Hays on a Saturday in October. I go a drainage over, or I hunt Tell City midweek.
Brown County edge, on purpose or not at all. Brown County State Park is not a general-season deer hunt. The deer that live against it use Yellowwood State Forest and the north Hoosier as the huntable half of their home range. You will see more orange there than on a random Perry County ridge. Hunt it on purpose or go south. Those state forests do not have their own WorldDeer URLs; they are named on the Indiana page.
These are white-tailed deer in timber. Most honest shots are inside 80 yards; a lot of the good bow shots are inside 30. That is a shot placement problem, not a courage problem. After the shot I mark last sight and last blood, and I wait if it is liver or gut. The checklist is on after the shot and how to field dress a deer. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her. Do not copy that.
If you are not hunting
The same land is a trip if the wind dies. Hardin Ridge on Monroe Lake is the north-end campground, beach, and two cabins (mid-April to early October) — a developed rec site, not a deer sit. Tipsaw, German Ridge, and Indian-Celina are the south lakes; gas motors are banned on Indian, Celina, Saddle, Tipsaw, German Ridge, Springs Valley (Tucker Lake), and Sundance. Mano Point is Ohio River access. Hemlock Cliffs is a one-mile box canyon between Highways 237 and 37, about two miles north of I-64 — sandstone overhangs, seasonal waterfalls, hemlock, wintergreen. No camping there, and climbing is prohibited from the large rock shelter. Hickory Ridge tower is the view. Buzzard Roost is the river bluff. Clover Lick Barrens is where Indiana started putting wild turkeys back on 6,000 acres in 1972. Pioneer Mothers is the old-growth walk. I would rather burn a blown-wind afternoon on that trail than educate a bench I plan to hunt at daylight.
If you hit a deer on I-69 or U.S. 50 on the way to camp, start at what to do if you hit a deer. Bloomington lots are why hostas get hammered; that garden problem belongs next to a deer-reduction-zone tag, not a Perry County two-track — do deer eat hostas.
Where to stay, ice, and the meat pole
Pick a base for the district you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery that is open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet clothes. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before. Call a processor before you shoot. Bloomington shops drown in deer the first firearms weekend. Ask two questions: are you taking CWD-area deer, and when can I actually pick up meat. I am not pasting a shop name I cannot personally vouch for this year.
Bloomington, IN — north Hoosier, Deam Wilderness, Hardin Ridge, Monroe Lake, IU grocery hours and late food. Best all-around base if you have not picked a unit yet. Foliage weekends and home football Saturdays book rooms; firearms week is its own circus.
Bedford, IN — Supervisor’s Office and Brownstown District. Shorter drive to interior forest roads than staying on Kirkwood. Limestone town. Quieter nights.
Tell City, IN — Tell City District office on 15th Street. German Ridge, Tipsaw, Ohio River hills. Closer to a Perry County ridge than Bloomington will ever be. Plan groceries; this is not a 10 p.m. town.
French Lick, IN — Orange County, Pioneer Mothers, Lick Creek, Springs Valley. Cabins and rooms that already exist for the resort crowd. Paoli is the closer grocery if you are hunting the old-growth edge; French Lick is the pillow.
Nashville, IN is pretty and it fills for foliage that overlaps early archery. I do not fight that for a deer hunt. Coming from out of state, read planning an out-of-state deer hunt before you book a cabin around Nov. 14.
A Hoosier drag out of a hollow can be 600 to 900 yards of pain. I side-hill to a ridge road even if it adds a third of a mile. I keep a cheap plastic sled in the truck when the leaves are down and the ground is slick. The hardware-store version, about $40, has hauled more deer for me than any boutique pack frame. I process my own deer in the garage, taught by my uncle who was a butcher, and I still call a shop when I am a mile in on a cliff. Mountain deer run lighter than corn-fed Illinois deer — size the cooler with how much meat from a deer.

If this Forest is slammed
If every Hardin Ridge or Hickory Ridge pull-off has a truck at 5 a.m., I do not drive home. I go to a nastier access on the same district, I hunt Tell City if I started in Bedford, or I slide to Harrison-Crawford, Clark, or Jackson-Washington state forests — 24,000-plus, 25,000-plus, and 18,000-plus acres of the same oak belt, empty 600 yards off the gravel. Those state forests do not have dedicated WorldDeer URLs yet; they are named on the Indiana page. I do not invent a secret WMA.
If I need deer on the ground, I leave the hills and hunt a weekday FWA or knock on a farm-woodlot door — that plan is on the state page, not here. Kentucky’s hill country on the Kentucky state page and Daniel Boone is the sibling hunt if you are building a multi-state southern-oak year. Illinois Shawnee around Marion is the western sibling on the Illinois state page — no dedicated Shawnee URL on WorldDeer yet, so I am not inventing one. Ottawa is actual big woods if 204,000 acres feel small. None of those are a same-morning backup from Bloomington.
Wildlife that actually lives here
Wild turkey are the honest overlap — same barrens, cuts, and oak mast. Turkey hours on the National Forest are half an hour before sunrise to sunset. Timber rattlesnakes and copperheads use the same south slopes I hunt as deer bedding; I watch my hands in the leaves into November. Indiana bats are why caves stay closed August 16–May 14. Bald eagles show up around Monroe and the south lakes. There is no established black-bear hunt here the way there is on Daniel Boone. Whitetails are the animal you came for.
FAQ
Do I need a draw tag to hunt deer on Hoosier National Forest?
No. Regular statewide Indiana deer hunting is over the counter. A resident or nonresident deer license covers Forest deer hunting under the county’s antlerless cap. Reserved hunts, Camp Atterbury and Crane military hunts, Muscatatuck and Big Oaks refuge hunts, and state-park management hunts still draw — those are not this Forest.
Can I hunt Pioneer Mothers Memorial Forest?
No. The 88-acre old-growth tract south of Paoli is a Research Natural Area. No hunting, camping, target shooting, horses, or bikes. Confirm on the Pioneer Mothers page.
Is baiting legal on the Forest?
No. Not corn, not minerals, not a “just this once” pile. Indiana bans baiting on public and private land. The Forest Service does not give you a workaround.
How far do I need to walk?
I start taking it seriously at about 400 to 900 yards, and I feel better when the last 200 yards are steep or thick. Easy Nebo or Hardin Ridge walking does not count as distance. If the walk is pleasant the whole way, expect company.
Can I shoot a doe with a rifle here during firearms season?
Yes, if you have a license that covers antlerless (bundle, multi-season antlerless, youth, lifetime) and you are on National Forest land, not on a listed DFW property or Patoka Lake. The firearms license itself is antlered-only. Read the current property list. Do not trust a forum screenshot.
Can I hunt Sunday?
Yes. Sunday hunting is legal on statewide Indiana deer seasons. Wear orange when a gun deer season requires it.

I am not a guide. I am a public-land hunter who has eaten tag soup on more than one Midwest ridge. If you pick a district, hunt a bench or a nasty cover edge off the easy two-track, stay out of Pioneer Mothers and the rec-site buffers, and keep a grocery and a processor in the same town as your pillow, the Hoosier will give you a shot. When it does, slow down, make it count, and side-hill the deer out.
