Who this forest is for
If you want gated two-tracks, northern hardwoods, and a legal deer you will drag through hobblebush, hunt Green Mountain National Forest — and pick Manchester District or Rochester/Middlebury before you book a cabin.
If you need 12 sightings a sit and a short drag to a bean edge, do not start here. Hunt a Champlain Valley WMA or an expanded-archery town on the Vermont page, then come to the Greens when you want the woods trip.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I grew up broke, so I learned public land before I ever paid for a lease, and I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. Vermont is the trip I take when I want New England farm-edge deer and true Green Mountain woods on one license. A Saturday in Addison County corn and a Saturday west of Rochester do not feel like the same sport. This page is the woods.
This is a meat-and-tracks hunt. Fish & Wildlife’s 2025 harvest on the spine units that actually overlap this forest ran 0.77 to 1.23 deer per square mile in WMUs M, L, and I. WMU B in the Champlain Valley ran 5.00. You will see fewer deer than a valley farm. Shot windows in maple-beech-birch and hemlock are 20 to 50 yards. If you need Illinois numbers, stay off the Long Trail lot.
Two blocks, two districts — pick one
The Forest Service is blunt: this is Vermont’s only national forest, more than 400,000 acres in southwestern and central Vermont, and it is not one blob. Manchester District and Rochester/Middlebury District do not share a parking lot. Rutland to Breadloaf is not an evening sit from a Glastenbury trailhead. Book the town that matches the district, or you will hunt from a motel you already paid for.
Manchester Ranger District — 2538 Depot Street, Manchester Center, VT 05255, (802) 362-2307. Hours as posted: Monday and Thursday 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Southern Vermont from the Massachusetts line north to Vermont Route 103 in Clarendon. Glastenbury Wilderness, Lye Brook Wilderness (900 to 2,900 feet, a high plateau with ponds and bogs east of Manchester), Big Branch Wilderness, Peru Peak Wilderness, George D. Aiken Wilderness, and Robert T. Stafford White Rocks National Recreation Area (22,624 acres; the Forest Service page is the number I use). Bromley sits on the district recreation list. I do not hunt a ski-area parking lot, and I do not treat a white-blaze Long Trail lot on Stratton as a secret sit.
Rochester / Middlebury Ranger District — 99 Ranger Road, Rochester, VT 05767, (802) 767-4261. Hours as posted: Tuesday–Friday 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m. Central Vermont. Breadloaf Wilderness is the largest wilderness on this forest; Breadloaf Mountain is 3,835 feet. Joseph Battell Wilderness holds Mount Horrid — peregrine closures on those cliffs are a spring/summer problem, not a November deer plan, but the white-blaze corridor is still a people highway. Bristol Cliffs Wilderness is the small west-facing escarpment. Moosalamoo National Recreation Area is 15,857 acres of hiking, bike, and ski trail density around Silver Lake and the Robert Frost Trail. I hunt the timber and wintering-cover edge off a gated Forest road, not the Falls of Lana overflow lot.
The Supervisor’s Office is in the woods it serves now: 4387 U.S. Route 4 East, Mendon, across from Woodward Road. That is a map stop, not a hunting access. Finger Lakes National Forest in New York is administered from the same unit. It is a different state, a different license, and a different stand calendar (Sept. 2–Dec. 31 there; third Thursdays here). Do not mix them in your head. Counties this forest actually sits in: Bennington, Addison, Rutland, Windham, Windsor, and a slice of Washington. You can drive U.S. 7 or Vermont 100 and think you are “in the forest” when you are on posted private or a ski-area lease. Green paint and a current MVUM beat a phone basemap.
Terrain, and how deer actually use it
Green Mountain deer do not live in a Pike County bean edge and they do not live on a Champlain Valley fencerow. Deer habitat here is security cover on a granite spine, with food spread out: beech mast when it is actually on the ground, oak on the lower benches, logging browse, leftover farmstead apples at the valley contact, and hemlock/spruce yards when winter arrives. The Forest is mostly maturing northern hardwoods — maple, beech, birch — with red spruce, balsam fir, and hemlock filling the rest. Vermont’s hunting digest notes the Forest Service improves about 2,500 acres of wildlife habitat a year on this unit. That is the cut you want, not a named waterfall. On June 13, 2025, the Rochester/Middlebury ranger signed the Telephone Gap Integrated Resource Project decision for towns including Brandon, Chittenden, Goshen, Killington, Mendon, Pittsfield, Pittsford, and Stockbridge. New browse is real. A fresh cut next to a Long Trail kiosk is still a people funnel. I hunt the ugly edge of that work, 400 to 900 yards off the easy two-track, last 200 yards steep or wet.
Winter writes the density map. Fish & Wildlife keeps spine-unit objectives at 12 deer per square mile in I, L, M, and P because the mountain winter does more of the killing than any hunter I know. Deer bed on the leeward hemlock benches and the first nasty cut off a gated road. They travel the dry finger between two wet pockets. I hunt the wet-to-dry edge, not a white blaze. When beechnuts are actually falling I sit the mast bench. When they are not, I quit the pretty timber.
When I time movement I check deer feeding times, then I let snow and pressure rewrite the clock. Sharp tracks into cover are a sit. Rounded tracks are a walk. The classic December play is taking a big track at daylight after the first real snow and staying with it. That is miles, wet wool, and the discipline to stop when the track starts to meander into a bed.
Access, parking, and opening weekend
Download the Motor Vehicle Use Map for the district you will park in. Free PDFs and the interactive visitor map sit on the maps page. Do not travel off the Forest road system. Park off the traveled portion. Do not block a gate. ATVs and OHVs stay on trails posted open — the Forest has had an OHV restriction order on the books since 2008. Most Forest roads close in winter; snowmobile use is on posted VAST trails, typically Dec. 15–April 15, conditions permitting. A route that looked open on Google in August may be seasonal, gated, or a snowmobile trail. I keep a paper MVUM in the truck because cell service dies in Breadloaf.
Check current Forest alerts the week you drive. Rochester/Middlebury has posted occupancy limits at Warren Falls, Bingo Brook, Chittenden Reservoir, Blueberry Lake, Silver Lake, and Texas Brook, plus FR 54 / FR 233 restrictions and a Sparks Pit closure. Manchester has posted Devil’s Den and FR 71 limits. I do not hunt a closed pit. I do not camp 16 days in a 30-day window — the occupancy order is 14.
Stands and blinds are the citation that bites Illinois hunters. Temporary and portable only. Owner name and address on the stand. In no earlier than the third Thursday of August, out by the third Thursday of December. No damage to any living tree — nails, bolts, screws, screw-in steps, wire, or chain that penetrates bark are out. No live limbs, shrubs, or trees cut. Opening Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026, every Long Trail/AT lot, every Route 7 foliage pull-off, and anything with a recreation name near Manchester or Rochester will have a truck. Hunt it like opening day on public land: 400 to 900 yards off the easiest access, last stretch wet, steep, or deadfall. I pick a backup parking pin before daylight. If the first lot is full, I do not drive the road looking for a miracle. I go to the pin. Treat a white blaze like a road. Wind and thermals
A weather app that says “west 6 mph” is lying to you on a west-facing Green Mountain slope. Morning thermals dump downhill. Evening thermals dump downhill again. Midday they swirl at the ridge lip. Lye Brook’s west face toward U.S. 7 is a scent dump into Manchester. Breadloaf benches dump into the White and New Haven drainages. I sit the downwind corner of cover and let a bad swirl dump into a cut, a posted ski-area boundary, or a drainage I do not expect deer to walk. I pick setups where my mistake blows into dead space, not into the best bedding. That is the same call I make in the Ozarks. The Greens just have more relief and more leaf-peeper parking to dump into.
Season notes versus the rest of Vermont
Do not copy the whole state table onto this page. OTC hunting license (one regular-season buck), archery and muzzleloader as extra licenses, Sunday hunting (legal), baiting (banned), hunter orange (recommended, not required), CWD (not detected; New York and Quebec carcass rules), and the nonresident $102 hunting license live on the Vermont page. If you are coming from out of state, read planning an out-of-state deer hunt before you book one town for “both” Green Mountain blocks. You cannot hunt them as a lunch-break backup.
What is not the same as a Champlain Valley farm sit, and what is extra on this Forest:
- Legal buck changes on the same trip. In WMUs G, I, L, M, P, and Q a legal buck is any deer with at least one antler three inches long — a spike can be legal. In WMUs K, O, N, H, J1, and J2 you need two or more points an inch long on one antler. The spine of this forest is mostly the spike units. Drop west toward Manchester/Bennington into WMU K and you are on the two-point rule with more deer. I decide that at the truck with the WMU map, not after the shot.
- Antlerless permits are tiny on the spine. The 2026 Board cut statewide antlerless permits to 12,050. WMU L and M got 50 apiece. WMU I got 250. P got 100. K, the valley contact, got 1,100. - Harvest density tells you what you bought. In 2025, WMU L posted 332 deer (0.91 per square mile), M 347 (0.77), I 523 (1.23). WMU K, the southwest valley edge, posted 1,175 (2.68). Source: 2025 deer harvest report. I take the first legal deer that matches the hunt I drove for.
- Baiting is banned statewide, and natural cervid urine is illegal. Forest Service habitat work is not a bait pile. I hunt without corn.
- Stands are a Forest order, not a WMA copy. WMA temporary-stand dates run third Sunday in August through third Saturday in December. This Forest is third Thursday to third Thursday, labeled, no bark penetration. Finger Lakes dates are different again.
- CWD has not been found in Vermont. That is why they are strict about New York and Quebec carcasses. Bone it out before you cross back. If a deer looks sick, use CWD symptoms and how to get your deer tested.
- Dogs are not a deer method. After a hit, a Fish & Wildlife–certified leashed tracker may recover the animal. I still-hunt. I do not pretend a Glastenbury plateau is a southern dog drive.
A lease is not the Vermont default. Open-unless-posted private land plus WMAs plus this forest is the real access story. The honest compare is public land vs lease deer hunting.
Where to sit without dropping a pin
I do not publish a tree. I publish a pattern.
On Manchester District: the first cut or hemlock edge off a two-track that does not have a recreation name. Avoid Lye Brook trailheads, Stratton Pond, Bromley, and any lot with a selfie stick in October. Big Branch country holds deer, bear, and moose — the Forest’s own write-up says so — and the AT/Long Trail crosses it for about five miles. Hunt the motor-legal side of that wilderness if you need a drag. Wilderness bans motors and mechanical transport. Do not shoot a deer into Elbow Swamp you cannot get a sled through.
On Rochester/Middlebury: get off Vermont 100 and the Moosalamoo trail grid. Hunt the nasty hardwood/hemlock mix on the Telephone Gap side of a gated road, or a wintering-cover bench that is not visible from a Long Trail kiosk. Breadloaf is solitude and a long drag. Mount Horrid is a view, not a November stand. Silver Lake and Falls of Lana are weather-day walks.
One morning sit tight to bedding. One evening sit on a travel bench. If I cannot explain why a deer would walk it at 8:10 a.m., I do not sit there. Still-hunt only in wet snow or enough wind. In 2014 I tracked a buck line 600 yards in crunchy snow and blew him out of his bed because I got impatient. Tracking is hunting. The deer gets a vote.
Shot windows in this cover swallow a bad hit. I decide max range before I climb. Bow in timber: 30 yards unless the lane is wide and the deer is calm. Rifle: still a backstop and a “no farther than that spruce” line — and not across a Forest road. Refresh shot placement and the after the shot hub. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her. In hobblebush that mistake is a lost deer on a face that all looks the same after dark.
If you are not hunting
Weather dies up here. Have a daylight plan that is not “drive to camp and stare at the wall.”
South: Bromley if you want a developed hill, White Rocks if you want quartzite and a short walk, Glastenbury’s Bald Mountain trail if the legs still work. North: Robert Frost Wayside, Moosalamoo, Silver Lake, Brandon Gap on Route 73. None of that is a reason to hunt a trailhead on Saturday of firearm week. The Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail share tread through this forest — hikers in October, hunters in November, and a food-storage order year-round because black bears use the same corridor.
Where to stay, ice, and the meat pole
Pick a base for the block you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet wool. Do not sleep in Manchester and hunt Breadloaf. Do not sleep in Middlebury and “just run over” to Glastenbury for the evening sit.
Manchester, VT — Manchester District roads, Lye Brook and Glastenbury access, grocery and rooms if a November storm shuts the gaps. Tourist town in October. Hunt interior, not the Bromley lot.
Bennington, VT — southwest forest, Glastenbury Wilderness edge, Massachusetts line. Do not wander south without a Massachusetts license.
Rutland, VT — gap town. Processors that already know the opener is chaos. Supervisor’s Office in Mendon. Best all-around service base if you are bouncing, not a substitute for being close to the parking area.
Rochester, VT — Route 100, Rochester District two-tracks, ranger station on Ranger Road. Quiet. Confirm gate status before you plan a December sit.
Middlebury, VT — Breadloaf and Moosalamoo, Champlain Valley farm edges if the mountain is slammed, expanded-archery towns nearby. A short run to the west benches, a long run to Manchester District.
Call a processor before you shoot. Valley shops drown in deer the first weekend. Ask two questions: when can I actually pick up meat, and do you take a quartered deer. The official list is the wild game processors PDF. A processor is not a reporting station. Tag the deer immediately. Report within 48 hours. Regular-season deer go to an official reporting station — not a phone app. Field-dress first. During the November firearms season, keep both central incisors for the biologist.
Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before. A Green Mountain drag through hobblebush can be 900 yards of pain. I keep a cheap plastic sled in the truck when snow is possible. If this forest is slammed
Same district, uglier access first. Wet, steep, deadfall. Most orange quits at the first dry two-track that still has a view of a foliage turnout.
Switch Green Mountain blocks only with a town plan. Manchester District slammed on Lye Brook lots → Glastenbury interior off a nastier spur, or accept the drive and hunt Rochester District from a Rochester or Middlebury room. Rochester slammed on Vermont 100 → Manchester only if you already have a south-block room. Do not commute between blocks in the dark.
Switch public land next. West Mountain WMA and the Kingdom Heritage lands are the remote Vermont backup — bogs, spruce, moose country, a December snow hunt. If you need to see deer, slide to a Champlain Valley WMA on a weekday and take a legal antlerless deer on an archery tag. A different state is a different tag. New Hampshire’s White Mountains are the eastern cousin — covered on the New Hampshire deer hunting page until a White Mountain child URL is live. Do not hunt a 404. Maine’s western public land is on the Maine page; Sunday hunting is the trap if you drive over from Bethel. Pennsylvania’s Allegheny and Kentucky’s Daniel Boone are sibling mountain trips, not a same-weekend backup from Rutland. Michigan’s Ottawa and Hiawatha are the Great Lakes version of this hunt: snow tracks, room to walk, fewer deer than a farm.
Wildlife that actually lives here
Black bear — common enough that the Forest has a food-storage order on every acre. Store food in a vehicle, a certified canister, or hung 12 feet up and 6 feet from the trunk. I do not keep a gut pile next to the truck. Moose live in Breadloaf and Glastenbury in real numbers; they are a lottery, a different season, and a different animal. Wild turkey, beaver, ruffed grouse, and snowshoe hare are the other animals you will actually jump. Bobcat and pine marten use Lye Brook. Peregrine falcons nest on Mount Horrid in spring. I do not sell a catamount sighting as a hunt plan.

FAQ
Is Green Mountain the same hunt as a Champlain Valley WMA?
No. The valley has more deer, extra antlerless tags, and a two-point rule in the densest units. This forest is fewer deer, longer drags, gated two-tracks, and a mountain winter. Statewide dates are the same. Density and the legal-buck line are not.
Should I hunt Manchester District or Rochester/Middlebury?
Manchester if you want the Massachusetts line, Glastenbury/Lye Brook, and a Manchester or Bennington base. Rochester/Middlebury if you want Breadloaf, Moosalamoo, and a Rochester or Middlebury room. They are not a same-day backup. Book the town that matches the MVUM you downloaded.
Can I leave a lock-on in all season?
Not past the third Thursday of December, and not before the third Thursday of August. Label it. Do not screw it into a live tree. Take it with you if you can. Abandoned stands get pulled.
Can I bait on Green Mountain National Forest?
No. Vermont bans baiting and feeding wild deer year-round. Natural urine lures are illegal. I hunt this forest without bait.
Can I hunt the Long Trail corridor?
Hunting is allowed on Forest land under state seasons, including Wilderness, with the 150-yard developed-recreation buffer and no shooting across a Forest road. The tread itself is hikers. I treat a white blaze like a road and sit off it. Do not turn a shelter into a meat pole — AT/Long Trail shelter restrictions are posted, and the food-storage order still applies.
Where should I stay for a first Green Mountain trip?
Manchester or Bennington if you picked the south block. Rochester or Middlebury if you picked the central block. Rutland if you need a processor and you are honest that it is a gap town, not a trailhead. St. Johnsbury is the Kingdom, not this forest.
