Pick the region before you pick a tree.
If you want more deer, longer gun seasons, and the chance to hunt with dogs, hunt the Gulf Coastal Plain and the Delta and accept floods, ticks, and a different kind of pressure.
If you want steep oak ridges, saddles, and room to walk, hunt the Ozarks or the Ouachitas and accept fewer daylight deer, CWD rules in the north, and a drag that climbs.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I grew up broke, so I learned public land before I ever paid for a lease, and I still split time between my 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. Arkansas is the next state south of that hunt: same limestone hollers on the north side, then pine and bottoms if you keep driving. A Saturday on White Rock and a Saturday at Bayou Meto do not feel like the same sport.

Species: it is a whitetail state
Arkansas is white-tailed deer country. There is no mule deer hunt here. If you grew up on western tags, do not pack a 400-yard mule setup and expect the same shot windows. In Ozark hardwoods, Ouachita pine, and Delta cane, most honest shots are inside 80 yards, and a lot of the good ones are inside 40.
The Buffalo River highlands have elk. That is a different license and a different drawing. Do not confuse an elk rumor with a deer plan. Black bears use the same oak ridges; I treat a popped-corn bait pile as a bear problem, not a deer sit.
2026–27 season stub (confirm your zone)
I am not pasting the proclamation. This is a 2026–27 stub, last checked September 7, 2026, from the AGFC zone table. If this table and AGFC disagree, AGFC wins. Arkansas runs 17-plus deer zones. WMA dates are often shorter than the private-land zone around them.

Two rules that actually change a trip: “muzzleloader season” is now alternative firearms — muzzleloaders plus non-semiautomatic straight-wall centerfires .30 caliber and up, plus large-bore air rifles that meet the energy rule. Shotguns with slugs are not legal in that window. And the early buck-only archery hunt is a three-day velvet window. In 2026 it sits on the last weekend of August. One buck. It counts. Confirm equipment on the AGFC deer-specific regulations page. Do not trust a forum screenshot.
Statewide bag on most private land is four deer, no more than two antlered bucks, with antlerless numbers split by weapon. Button bucks count as antlerless and must be checked as button bucks. Outside the CWD zone, most of the state uses a three-point-on-one-side rule. Zones 16, 16A, and 17 (and several east-side WMAs) use a 15-inch inside spread or 18-inch main beam. Inside the CWD Management Zone, antler restrictions come off. Youth 6–15 may take any buck. I decide legality at the license counter and again when the deer is standing there, not in the dark on opening morning.
OTC vs draw, and what it actually costs
Most Arkansas deer hunting is over the counter. Residents who want a full bag buy the Sportsman’s License for $25 and get six deer tags, two turkey tags, and a bear tag. The $10.50 Wildlife Conservation License is one deer. The $35.50 combo adds fishing. Nonresidents get sticker shock on the $410 annual hunting license, not on a separate deer stamp — six deer tags come with it. A 3-day license is $225. A 1-day is $100. If you are coming from out of state, read planning an out-of-state deer hunt before you book a cabin around the opener. What still draws: permit firearm hunts on some WMAs (Fort Chaffee, Freddie Black Choctaw Island, and others). A draw application is not a deer license. Leased-lands WMAs — Big Timber, Casey Jones, Jack Mountain, Gum Flats, and the rest of that AGFC list — need a $75 Leased Lands Permit on top of a hunting license. Anyone 16 or older hunting or trapping on WMAs needs the WMA general-use privilege; a hunting license covers it. If you only want to hike an AGFC-owned WMA without a hunting or fishing license, the WMA/Lake Conservation Permit is $10.50 as of July 1, 2026.
Hunter education is required for anyone born after 1968. Arkansas accepts other states’ cards. Youth under 16 can hunt without it if a licensed adult 21 or older is right there. Harvest checking is mandatory: tag before you move the deer, then check in the AGFC app or by phone within 12 hours. I close it when I am back in cell service. Buy licenses through AGFC licensing. CWD, baiting, Sundays, and dogs
Chronic wasting disease is not a rumor here. It showed up in 2016 in Newton County elk and deer. AGFC’s first intensive sample around those animals came back at 23 percent in northern Newton County. The zone has since spread across the Ozark highlands and into new counties — Grant and Sevier were added for July 1, 2026. Carcass rules matter more than a Facebook argument. You cannot haul an intact CWD-zone deer into a clean county. You cannot import most out-of-state cervid parts. Low-risk cuts are the exception. I bone meat in the CWD zone or I use an AGFC drop site. Do not guess; read the current CWD hunting regulations.
Baiting is a three-layer rule. Wildlife management areas: no bait. Private land outside the CWD zone: feeding and baiting deer is legal year-round, and food plots are legal year-round. Private land inside the CWD zone: you may hunt deer and elk over bait only Sept. 1–Dec. 31. I hunt public without bait either way. Corn piles teach deer and teach other hunters where to sit. Natural deer urine was banned; AGFC lifted that prohibition starting in 2025–26. I still skip urine in the CWD core. Sunday hunting is legal, unlike the old patchwork we still explain on the Pennsylvania state page.
Dogs are the Arkansas split. Ozark and most northern zones (1–5, 9, 16) do not allow dogs for deer. Southern and some river zones allow dogs during listed modern-gun dates. Nonresidents may use dogs only during the last nine days of regular modern gun in the dog-legal zones, need a $100 Nonresident Hunting Dog Owner’s Permit, and may take only one deer per year with dogs. WMAs are closed to deer dogs unless the area card says otherwise. If you run a tracking dog after a hit, that is a different call — AGFC has a wounded-deer procedure. Do not turn a tracking dog into a deer drive on a no-dog WMA.
Public land that actually matters
Arkansas has a lot of green on the map. Most of it is not “secret.” The useful question is which tracts are big enough, ugly enough, or farm-close enough to match the hunt you want. - Ozark-St. Francis National Forests — the Forest Service’s own welcome page calls it 1.2 million acres of hardwood, pine, and streams, with headquarters in Russellville. White Rock, Piney Creeks, and Sylamore are the big cooperative WMAs inside that proclamation. This is the Arkansas version of the saddle-and-bench hunt I run on the Missouri side. No dedicated Ozark NF URL is live on WorldDeer, so use this state page, the Ozarks public-land guide, and a Forest Service map. Hunt 0.8 to 1.6 miles off the easy two-track. Last 200 yards steep or brushy.
- Ouachita National Forest — the other big public block, most of it in Arkansas, spilling into Oklahoma. Pine-oak ridges, more east-west than the Ozarks, and Winona WMA is the name I hear in camp. No dedicated Ouachita URL is live here. Use the Ouachita Forest Service map and the same pressure rules. Hot Springs is the base if you want grocery and a processor without a Delta flood.
- St. Francis National Forest WMA — 22,798 acres on Crowley’s Ridge in Lee and Phillips counties, per AGFC. Small, hilly hardwoods plus river-adjacent bottoms. 15-inch/18-inch buck rule. Do not treat it like 1.2 million acres of Ozark.
- Delta WMAs and Dale Bumpers White River NWR — Bayou Meto (George H. Dunklin Jr.), Trusten Holder, and the White River refuge complex. More deer, more water, more mosquitoes. Flood gauges close units. White River NWR has its own special-use permit. I do not pretend a ridge-saddle plan works in flooded timber.
- Fort Chaffee WMA — western Arkansas military land with permit firearm hunts and CWD rules. Public-use compartments close for training. Do not show up on a whim with a rifle.
- Freddie Black Choctaw Island — Mississippi River island research area. Doe-before-buck on the east unit, permit guns, and the area closes when the Arkansas City gauge hits 31 feet. That is a flood hunt, not an Ozark hunt.
Army Corps land around Norfork, Greers Ferry, Ouachita, and Dardanelle is the overlooked ribbon if the national forest parking lot looks like a boat ramp on opening morning. If White Rock is slammed, I do not invent an Ouachita child URL. I hunt a nastier access on the same forest, or I slide to Piney Creeks or a Corps tract. If a Delta WMA parking lot looks like a Black Friday sale, I leave and hunt a smaller tract or a midweek sit. Missouri’s Ozarks page is the sibling woods hunt if you are building a two-state November. Oklahoma’s Ouachita spillover is the west-side backup, not a same-morning hop from Mountain Home.
One tactic that works in hills and bottoms
I do not still-hunt pretty oaks all day and hope. I pick one morning sit tight to bedding and one evening sit on a travel edge, and I only sit there if I can explain why a deer would walk it at 8:10 a.m. Fresh tracks beat last year’s rubs. When I time movement I check deer feeding times, then I let the region change the food: white oak acorns in the Ozarks, pine edges and clearcut regrowth in the Ouachitas, soybeans on the Grand Prairie, green browse in January.
Ozarks and Ouachitas: hunt saddles, benches one-third down the leeward slope, and the first brushy point off the ridge spine — the same three spot types on the Ozarks guide. Do not walk the skyline at daylight. Delta and river WMAs: hunt the first dry ridge or the edge of the water, not the middle of the flooded block. Dog-legal zones on a Saturday in late November are a drive whether you signed up for one or not. I sit the downwind side of the push.
Wind is not optional. I pick setups where a bad swirl dumps into water or dead space, not into the bed — same lesson as do deer move in the wind, just hotter. I wasted money on $400 ozone scent control that made zero difference. Bow in timber: 30 yards unless the lane is wide and the deer is calm. Straight-wall in alternative firearms: still a backstop. Refresh shot placement and the after the shot hub before opening weekend. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her.
Pressure: the modern-gun opener is a holiday
Arkansas’s modern-gun opener is a cultural event. Every Forest Service pull-off with a gravel pad will have a truck in it. That is not a reason to stay home. It is a reason to hunt like public land deer: hunters cluster near roads, peak on opening weekend, and quit when the walk gets steep or wet. I hunt the opener 0.8 to 1.6 miles off easy access, I hunt midweek of the first gun week if I can take the days, and I hunt late archery when the Christmas crowd has gone home. Highest pressure: Bayou Meto on Saturday of modern gun, and the first gravel lot on White Rock at 5 a.m. Lowest: a Wednesday in late October on a nasty Ozark sidehill.
Where to stay, and why the town matters
Pick a base for the side of the state you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery that is open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. Hunters do not all want hotels. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet clothes. Arkansas heat in September archery is a meat race; a room with a freezer or a cabin with a porch for a cooler is worth more than a pool.
Russellville, AR — Ozark-St. Francis headquarters town on I-40. Grocery, rooms, White Rock access, processor the same afternoon.
Harrison, AR — north Ozarks and Buffalo River country. Newton, Boone, and Searcy CWD ground. Confirm carcass rules before you drive a deer south.
Mountain Home, AR — northeast Ozarks, Norfork and White River, Corps land if the forest lots fill. Cabin country. Cook in the kitchen.
Hot Springs, AR — Ouachita pine-oak without a Delta flood. Real grocery and a fallback if the weather dies.
Camden, AR — south pine woods and dog-country WMAs. Longer gun seasons. Pack ticks and a different map.
Stuttgart, AR — Delta / Bayou Meto. Duck-town processors and ice when the high is 72.
Processors, ice, and getting a deer out
Call a processor before you shoot, especially for the modern-gun opener. Ozark shops book. Delta shops drown in deer the first weekend. Ask two questions: are you taking CWD-area deer, and when can I actually pick up meat. In the CWD zone I ask whether they will hold the carcass until the test posts.
I process my own deer in the garage when I can, taught by my uncle who was a butcher. On an Arkansas road trip I still want a backup shop and a cooler plan. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before, twice if archery is still 80 degrees. An Ozark drag up a limestone slope can be 900 yards of pain. I keep cheap climbing sticks in the truck so I can hang 18 feet off a bench instead of hoping a ridge-top oak hides me.

Tag it, then check it. How to tag a deer is the mechanics; Arkansas wants the harvest in the system within 12 hours, and evidence of sex stays on until it is checked. You may quarter in the field if the head stays within arm’s reach of all four quarters until then. Field work is how to field dress a deer. Hill-country deer run lighter than corn-fed Illinois deer, so I size coolers with how much meat from a deer. Missouri’s opener is a different calendar. Oklahoma’s Ouachita side is a different license. Hunt one state honestly.

Do I need a draw tag to hunt deer in Arkansas?
No. A resident Sportsman’s License or a nonresident annual hunting license covers most of the state over the counter. Some WMA firearm hunts still draw. Leased-lands WMAs need the extra $75 permit. Elk is a different hunt.
When is Arkansas modern-gun deer season?

Can I bait deer in Arkansas?
