Pick the habitat before you pick a WMA.
If you want more deer and a boat or a levee road, hunt the Mississippi and Atchafalaya bottoms and accept CWD rules, mosquitoes, and a parking lot that fills before daylight.
If you want room to walk, longleaf ridges, and a still-hunt only forest, hunt Kisatchie and accept fewer deer, pine thickets, and a 150-yard buffer off every campground.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I still split time between a 65-acre Pike County, Illinois lease and public dirt in the Ozarks. Louisiana is the trip I take when I want two hunts that do not feel like the same sport: a bottomland sit where the water is in the way, and a pine-hills walk on Kisatchie that rewards the hunter who will leave the two-track. A Saturday on Sherburne and a Saturday west of Natchitoches are not interchangeable.

Species: it is a whitetail state
Louisiana is white-tailed deer country. There is no mule deer tag here. In palmetto, cane, and 15-year pine, most honest shots are inside 80 yards, and a lot of the good ones are inside 40. Bottomland bucks can look like Illinois deer. Kisatchie bucks often look like they have been living on browse and heat. In yards they hammer plants like hostas; in the woods I hunt acorns, honeysuckle, and whatever greenbrier is still standing. Black bear is a different permit. Feral hogs are on almost every public tract I would bother to hunt; they are a bonus, not the reason I drive south.
2026-27 season stub (confirm your deer area)
I am not pasting the full ten-area proclamation. This is a 2026-27 stub, last checked September 7, 2026. If this table and the LDWF seasons page disagree, LDWF wins. Find your parish on the deer-area map first. Parishes split across areas. Kisatchie has its own still-hunt calendar even when the parish around it allows dogs.

Youth and honorably discharged veterans get a private-land either-sex week that starts as early as Sept. 26 in Areas 3, 7, 8, and 10. Primitive firearms is still-hunt only. Hunters 65 and older, youth, and qualifying disabled hunters may use any legal weapon during primitive season. Areas 5, 6, and 9 mix either-sex and bucks-only days into February; do not assume “open” means a doe is legal that morning. Two 2026 changes that actually change a trip: Deer Area 1’s season limit is now 2 antlered or 5 antlerless inside a 6-deer cap, and CWD “control areas” were rewritten as 15-mile management zones. Special early bucks-only archery in Areas 1, 2, and 6 is private land inside those zones only.
OTC vs draw, and what it actually costs
Most Louisiana deer hunting is over the counter. Buy a basic hunting license, then a deer license. The deer license includes tags, archery, and primitive. Youth 17 and under buy a youth hunting license with tags included. Have tags in possession before you hunt. Immediately after the shot, tag the deer before you move it. What still draws: some WMA and refuge lottery hunts, including youth days on Sherburne and quota gun hunts on Tensas River NWR. A lottery application is not a deer license. Nonresidents get sticker shock on the $200 basic license, not the $100 deer add-on. If you are coming from out of state, read planning an out-of-state deer hunt before you book a cabin around a WMA either-sex weekend. Buy licenses at LDWF licenses. On LDWF land you also need a WMA Access Permit ($20 annual or $5 for five days if you are 18 or older) and a self-clearing check-in every day. I have watched people get cited at the gate for skipping it.
CWD, baiting, Sundays, and dogs
Chronic wasting disease is not a rumor here, and it is not statewide yet. LDWF’s parish table shows 55 positives through 2025-26: 52 in Tensas, and one each in Catahoula, Concordia, and Ouachita. Do not haul a whole deer out of a CWD management zone. Deboned meat, cut-and-wrapped meat, quarters with no spine or head, clean skull plates, capes, and finished mounts are the legal list. Whole-carcass import from other states is banned on the same terms. Natural cervid urine is a CWD vector; certified lures only, or skip them.
Baiting is legal on most private land. It is banned on WMAs and on Kisatchie. Inside current CWD management zones, baiting and feeding are allowed Sept. 1, 2026 through March 31, 2027 unless a zone’s apparent prevalence hits 2.5 to 20 percent, in which case the next surveillance season shuts bait off. I hunt public dirt without corn. Piles teach deer and teach other hunters where to sit.
Sunday hunting is legal. Dogs are a Louisiana deer method on private land during the “firearms with or without dogs” window for your area. Area 10 has no dog season. Primitive, archery, WMAs, and Kisatchie are still-hunt only, and training deer dogs is prohibited year-round on the forest. A tracking dog after a hit is a different rule; read it before you turn a hound out on a WMA. Do not bring a deer-dog plan onto Kisatchie and then blame the Forest Service.
Public land that actually matters
Louisiana has more than 1.6 million acres of WMAs, refuges, and conservation areas, plus about 604,000 acres of Kisatchie. Most of the green on the map is not “secret.” The useful question is pine hills you can walk, or bottoms you may have to boat. This is the short list I would spend gas on. - Kisatchie National Forest — 604,000 acres across seven parishes. Still hunt only. One deer per day. Portable stands only (24-hour limit). Stay 150 yards off developed sites and do not shoot across a forest road. Catahoula and Red Dirt preserves need a free season permit, plus a self-clearing daily permit on deer gun hunts. Vernon Unit archery opens Sept. 19. Caney District (Webster and Claiborne) runs closer to Area 2 dates, still hunt only. Hunt 400 to 900 yards off the easy forest road. Last 200 yards should be ugly: briar, cutover, or a creek swamp other people will not cross in snake country. Official: Kisatchie hunting.
- Sherburne WMA / Atchafalaya NWR complex — 43,637 acres of bottomland hardwood in Pointe Coupee, St. Martin, and Iberville parishes. Cottonwood, overcup oak, bitter pecan. 2025 managed either-sex hunt: 59 deer, 10.3 efforts per deer. That is a lot of boots for the deer you see. Lafayette beats Baton Rouge traffic at 4 a.m. Official: Sherburne WMA.
- Richard K. Yancey WMA — Concordia Parish oxbow country. The 2025 managed hunt led the state with 245 deer at 5.0 efforts per deer. Meat hunt if you can stand pressure and CWD-zone carcass rules. Tallulah and Ferriday are closer than Baton Rouge.
- Dewey W. Wills WMA — Catahoula and LaSalle. 101 deer on the 2025 managed hunt, 5.1 efforts. Mixed swamp and pine-hardwood. Read the limited-access map before you commit a boat.
- Fort Polk-Vernon and Fort Polk North WMAs — military land. Fort Polk North put 209 deer on the 2025 board at 5.3 efforts. October hunts get suspended when the Army closes the range. Do not pick up leftover ordnance. Leesville is the base.
- Loggy Bayou WMA — Bienville and Bossier. Only 64 deer on the 2025 managed hunt, but 2.6 efforts per deer, the best success rate on that sheet. Smaller, nastier, worth a midweek sit.
- Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge — Delta refuge in CWD country. Federal dates, quota gun hunts, often 1 deer per day. Confirm on the Tensas River NWR hunt page, not a WMA rumor.
- Maurepas Swamp WMA — southeast swamp out of the Florida Parishes. 54 deer on the 2025 managed hunt at 6.6 efforts. Boat more than a pretty oak. Pearl River WMA sat at 13.2 efforts per deer; I would hunt Maurepas on a weekday first.
If Kisatchie is slammed, I hunt a nastier access on the same district, slide to Caney, or take a midweek WMA sit. If a Sherburne lot looks like a Black Friday sale, I leave. Arkansas Ozark and Ouachita country, and Mississippi’s Bienville, Canemount, and Copiah WMAs, are sibling hunts for a multi-state year. They are not a same-weekend backup from Alexandria. One tactic that works in hills and bottoms
I do not still-hunt pretty oaks all day and hope. I pick one morning sit tight to bedding and one evening sit on a travel edge, and I only sit there if I can explain why a deer would walk it at 8:10 a.m. Fresh tracks in mud beat last year’s rubs. When I time movement I check deer feeding times, then I let the habitat change the food: acorns and honeysuckle in the hills, overcup mast and palmetto edges in the bottoms, waste grain along the Delta.
Pine hills: hunt the nasty edge other people skip — a 3-year-old cutover, a beaver swamp, a seeded log deck growing briar. Kisatchie either-sex gun days are short; I treat them like a drive I did not sign up for and sit the downwind side of the push. Bottoms: water is a fence. Deer walk the first dry ridge, the levee toe, and the oak flat that did not flood last week. I wasted a morning in 2018 hunting a Missouri oxbow that had two feet of new water and no tracks. Wind is not optional. Swamp thermals die and swirl. I pick setups where a bad swirl dumps into water, not into the bed — same lesson as do deer move in the wind, just hotter. I wasted money on $400 ozone scent control that made zero difference. Bow in timber: 30 yards unless the lane is wide and the deer is calm. Rifle on a levee: still a backstop. Refresh shot placement and the after the shot hub. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her. October archery is a heat hunt. Hydrate, wear a tick system you will actually keep on, and do not step off a log in cottonmouth country without looking. I wear snake gaiters in the bottoms. The cheap pair has saved more hunts than any grunt call.

Pressure: either-sex weekend is the circus
Louisiana does not have a single Nov. 15 holiday. Pressure stacks on WMA either-sex firearms days, on Kisatchie either-sex gun days (Oct. 31–Nov. 1 and Nov. 27 in 2026-27), and on any lot you can see from the blacktop. Hunters cluster near roads and boat ramps, peak on the Saturday a doe is legal, and quit when the walk gets wet. I hunt those days 400 to 900 yards off easy access, or I hunt Tuesday through Thursday. I do not rattle all day on a pressured WMA. Sherburne on an either-sex Saturday is the highest-pressure hunt I would do here. Kisatchie on a Wednesday in early January is the lowest.
Where to stay, and why the town matters
Pick a base for the side of the state you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery open after dark, and a processor matter more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. I want late checkout on opening morning and ice I can buy at 9 p.m.
Natchitoches, LA — Kisatchie Ranger District and Red Dirt. Grocery, rooms, and a real town if the weather dies.
Alexandria, LA — central pine hills, Catahoula and Evangeline units, I-49, processors.
Leesville, LA — Vernon Unit and Fort Polk WMAs. Confirm military closures before you book the week.
Tallulah, LA — Tensas bottoms, Big Lake, the refuge. CWD drop coolers and processors that know the opener is chaos.
Lafayette, LA — Sherburne / Atchafalaya access without Baton Rouge traffic.
Monroe, LA — northeast pine-hardwood, Russell Sage, and CWD sampling on the Tensas/Ouachita edge.
Processors, ice, and getting a deer out
Call a processor before you shoot, especially for a WMA either-sex weekend. Ask two questions: are you taking CWD-zone deer, and when can I actually pick up meat. Inside a CWD zone, plan to bone or quarter in the field so you can legally leave. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before. A swamp drag can be 400 yards of palmetto. If you are not hunting
Kisatchie is also a hiking forest — longleaf, sandstone, Kisatchie Hills trails if you are based in Natchitoches. Sherburne has a public shooting range. If the woods are closed or the weather dies, walk a marked trail, buy ice, and try again at daylight.

Do I need a draw tag to hunt deer in Louisiana?
No. A basic hunting license plus a deer license covers most of the state, including Kisatchie. Some WMA and refuge hunts still draw.
When does Louisiana deer season start?

Can I bait?
On most private land, yes. Not on WMAs or Kisatchie. CWD zones have a 2026-27 baiting window with a prevalence trigger. I hunt public dirt without bait.
Where should a first-timer go?
If you need to see deer, hunt a bottomland WMA on a weekday either-sex day and take a legal doe. If you want a woods trip, hunt Kisatchie off the easy road and do not expect Illinois numbers.
What about CWD and eating the deer?
Have it tested if you are in a management zone, and do not eat a sick-looking animal. Testing: get your deer tested and LDWF’s CWD testing page. Sundays are legal. Wear hunter orange or blaze pink during firearms seasons — 400 square inches on public gun hunts.
