A depiction of a tranquil woodland scene at dawn in Texas, representative of prime deer hunting locations. The landscape should showcase dense clusters of gnarled oak trees, here and there relying on the soft light of the breaking day. Occasional deer can be seen grazing or peeking out from amongst the foliage. Also paired with various hunting equipment, such as a high-seated hunting perch nestled in a treetop, a hunting rifle propped against a tree trunk, and a pair of binoculars left on a nearby rock, all unbranded. No humans or human-made structures are present.

Texas Deer Hunting: The Best Spots and How to Hunt Them (updated 2026)

Updated on September 8, 2026. Season dates, county bag limits, and public-hunt permits move. Confirm them on the TPWD white-tailed deer page and the current Outdoor Annual before you wire a lease deposit or buy a tag.

Pick the hunt before you pick a tree.

If you will pay for a gate code, hunt South Texas brush or Hill Country live oak on a lease, sit a long rifle season that covers the rut, and accept feeders, neighbors, and a contract that matters more than a map.

If you will not pay ranch money, hunt East Texas pine on an Annual Public Hunting permit, accept pressure, a bait ban, and a drawn doe tag on the Forest Service WMAs, and do not pretend Sam Houston is Webb County.

I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I grew up broke, so I learned public land before I ever paid for a lease, and I still split time between my 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. I have not paid a South Texas brush lease. I have paid Midwest farm-timber money, and I have run the Texas tag math when friends asked why they should fly to Uvalde instead of driving to West Plains. A Saturday on a Webb County sendero and a Saturday off FM 1375 in Sam Houston do not feel like the same sport.

This page is the statewide trip plan. There is no live Sam Houston or Davy Crockett unit page on this site yet, so I am not inventing those URLs. The woods how-to for pine public lives here plus hunting national forest land. If you are still choosing a state, start at deer hunting by state and the deer hunting hub. The honest compare is Texas vs Midwest deer hunting. Texas sits next to hunts we cover in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, and New Mexico.

Texas deer hunting facts

Last checked September 8, 2026. If this table and TPWD disagree, TPWD wins. This is a plain-English readout, not the proclamation.

Species White-tailed deer in 252 of 254 counties. Mule deer in 74 counties (Panhandle and Trans-Pecos). Axis, sika, fallow, and other exotics on private land are not a native deer tag. TPWD white-tailed deer
License OTC. Resident hunting $25. Nonresident general $315 (the only nonresident license valid for white-tailed or mule deer, including MLDP tags). Youth (under 17) $7. Archery endorsement $7. Nonresident 5-day special $48 is exotic/small game only — not valid for native deer. TPWD hunting licenses
Seasons (2026–27) Archery Oct. 3–Nov. 6, 2026. General North Zone Nov. 7, 2026–Jan. 3, 2027; South Zone Nov. 7, 2026–Jan. 17, 2027. Youth-only Oct. 30–Nov. 1 (both zones) and Jan. 4–17 (North). Muzzleloader Jan. 4–17, 2027 in 90 counties. Special late: North Jan. 4–17; South Jan. 18–31 (antlerless and unbranched antlered only). County bag still rules. TPWD 2026–27 season dates
Bag Statewide annual: five white-tailed deer, no more than three bucks, except on MLDP properties. County limits and antler restrictions can be tighter. Mule deer: two, no more than one buck. TPWD deer page
Sunday hunting Yes. Statewide. No Pennsylvania-style Sunday close.
Baiting Legal on private land for deer. Unlawful on most public hunting lands unless a specific unit authorizes it. TPWD means and methods
Dogs Cannot be used to hunt deer in Texas. Tracking a hit deer with a dog is not a listed exception the way Oklahoma writes it. TPWD means and methods
Hunter orange Not required on private property (recommended). On public hunting lands during daylight when firearm hunting is permitted: at least 400 square inches of hunter orange plus orange headgear, 144 square inches on chest and back. Archers wear it whenever firearms are legal on that unit. TPWD blaze orange
CWD Confirmed in free-ranging white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, and red deer in localized portions of Texas. 2026–27 Outdoor Annual lists voluntary check stations and statewide carcass-disposal rules, not a mandatory-zone map. See CWD symptoms. TPWD CWD
Public land Texas is about 172 million acres and roughly 97% private. TPWD public hunting is a little over a million acres and 180-plus areas. APH permit $48. National Forests and Grasslands in Texas: Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, Angelina, Sabine, Caddo, and LBJ grasslands. Drawn hunts on WMAs and state parks. Corps reservoirs. Cross Bar BLM in the Panhandle. Official: TPWD APH / public hunting
Official regs TPWD white-tailed deer. Buy licenses: txfgsales.com

Species: whitetails first, then mule, then spotted deer that are not a tag

Most of Texas is white-tailed deer country. TPWD’s last published population work puts the herd around five million. The latest big-game harvest survey (mailed January 2026, closed April 21, 2026) estimated 782,405 white-tailed deer harvested by 714,424 hunters, 63% success, 11.5 days afield. That is a meat-and-antler machine, not a rumor. It is also not evenly spread. South Texas brush, Edwards Plateau live oak, Cross Timbers, and East Texas pine all grow whitetails. They do not hunt the same.

Mule deer live in the Panhandle and Trans-Pecos — 74 counties have a season. The same survey estimated 10,704 mule deer harvested by 27,980 hunters, 37% success. Annual bag is two mule deer, no more than one buck, except on MLDP. Rifle seasons are short: Panhandle Nov. 21–Dec. 6, 2026; Trans-Pecos Nov. 27–Dec. 13. If you cannot tell a mule from a whitetail at 250 yards, read mule deer vs whitetail before you squeeze. The species page is mule deer. New Mexico is the western neighbor hunt if the Texas mule tag is a 16-day window you cannot make.

Axis deer are not native. TPWD lists them as an exotic. On private property there is no closed season, no state bag limit, and no state tag — you still need a hunting license and the landowner’s permission. That is in the current Outdoor Annual exotic rules (Sept. 1, 2026–Aug. 31, 2027). A nonresident who is only hunting exotics can buy the five-day special for $48 instead of the $315 general license; that paper is not valid for white-tailed or mule deer. Axis were first stocked in Kerr County in 1932 and now run free-range in the Edwards Plateau. Breeding can happen year-round; peak is often June and July. Species ID is on axis vs whitetail. Do not shoot a spotted adult on a native tag and call it a fawn.

Black bears are a state-threatened species in Texas. You cannot hunt them. If you see one in East Texas pine, that is a wildlife note, not a tag — start at where are black bears in Texas. Feral hogs are the other year-round problem on a deer lease; the feeder fight is on how to keep hogs out of deer feeders in Texas.

2026–27 season stub (confirm your county)

I am not pasting 254 county proclamations. This is a 2026–27 stub, last checked September 8, 2026. County bag, doe days, and antler restrictions still rule. If this table and the TPWD white-tailed deer page disagree, TPWD wins. One 2026–27 change that actually changes a trip: doe days expanded in 21 counties from four days to 16.

Weapon / season 2026–27 dates Notes
Archery (white-tailed) Oct. 3 – Nov. 6, 2026 Archery endorsement required. 252 of 254 counties.
Youth-only (early) Oct. 30 – Nov. 1, 2026 Hunters 16 and under. Both zones.
General North Zone Nov. 7, 2026 – Jan. 3, 2027 Centerfire legal. Long overlap with rut in a lot of counties.
General South Zone Nov. 7, 2026 – Jan. 17, 2027 Two extra weeks. This is the South Texas rifle hunt people mean.
Muzzleloader-only Jan. 4 – 17, 2027 90 of 254 counties. Definition of muzzleloader was updated for 2026–27.
Special late North Jan. 4 – 17, 2027 Antlerless and unbranched antlered only.
Special late South Jan. 18 – 31, 2027 Same restriction. Not a trophy cleanup week.
Mule deer archery Panhandle Oct. 3 – Nov. 20; Trans-Pecos Oct. 3 – Nov. 26 74 counties. Confirm the county list.
Mule deer general Panhandle Nov. 21 – Dec. 6; Trans-Pecos Nov. 27 – Dec. 13 Short. Do not treat it like a two-month whitetail rifle season.

Antler restrictions on white-tailed bucks apply in listed counties: two legal bucks, but only one may have two branched antlers and an inside spread of 13 inches or greater. A legal buck there is an unbranched antler or a 13-inch inside spread. Ear-tip to ear-tip on an alert buck is the field guide, not a tape on a live deer. Collin, Dallas, Grayson, and Rockwall are the metro archery-endorsement counties year-round. Mandatory harvest reporting hits those four for bucks and antlerless, plus a longer antlerless-only list east of I-35 — report in the Texas Hunt & Fish app within 24 hours. I close it when I have cell service. Paper fails in a wet pack.

OTC tags, and what the $315 actually buys

Most Texas deer hunting is over the counter. There is no statewide deer draw. What you pay for is access, not a lottery ticket. Residents buy a $25 hunting license. Nonresidents who want a native deer buy the $315 general license. That is the only nonresident paper valid for white-tailed deer, mule deer, or MLDP tags. The $48 five-day special is a trap if you meant to shoot a whitetail. Archery endorsement is $7 on top if you hunt the October bow season or those four metro counties. Licenses go on sale August 15 and run through August 31 of the next year. Buy at txfgsales.com or a retailer. Digital tags live in the Texas Hunt & Fish app.

The cart, Super Combo, hunter ed, APH, MLDP tagging, and how a nonresident actually buys the General Hunting License are on how to get a Texas deer hunting license.

Hunter education is an age-and-birthdate rule: anyone born on or after Sept. 2, 1971 must complete the course, or hunt as accompanied, or buy a one-time $10 deferral if 17 or older. Military, some Texas Guard, and qualifying peace officers are exempt. Certification is $15 in person. Proof has to be on you, printed or in the Outdoor Annual app. Certification is not required to buy the license. If you are coming from out of state, read planning an out-of-state deer hunt before you book a cabin around the opener.

Rimfire is not legal for white-tailed or mule deer. That is a means-and-methods line, not a campfire argument. High-fence hunts are a different ethics conversation — read high-fence deer hunting ethics before you wire a ranch that advertises guaranteed scores.

CWD, baiting, Sundays, and dogs

Chronic wasting disease is not a rumor here. TPWD has found it in white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, and red deer in localized portions of the state. The 2026–27 Outdoor Annual CWD page lists voluntary check stations — Bexar, Coleman, George West, Gillespie, Gonzales, Hamilton, Hondo, Hunt, Kimble, Lytle, Panhandle, Rocksprings, Sutton, Trans-Pecos, Val Verde, Washington — not a mandatory-zone map. Confirm TPWD CWD before you haul a head. Statewide carcass disposal applies if you leave the property of harvest: unused parts go in commercial trash, back to the property, or buried at least three feet down with three feet of cover. Deboning is legal if meat stays in whole muscles, separate bags per deer, and proof of sex stays with it. Rendering is not a lawful disposal method. If a deer looks sick, skinny, or oddly tame, use CWD deer symptoms and how to get your deer tested for CWD. Broader context is on deer diseases. After a hot late summer, dead deer in creeks can also be EHD.

Baiting is the culture shock. Private-land Texas hunts over corn feeders as a default. On TPWD public hunting lands, baiting is generally prohibited unless a unit authorizes it. I hunt public without corn either way. A pile teaches deer and teaches other hunters where to sit. Hogs will find the same spinner. Sunday hunting is legal statewide. Dogs cannot be used to hunt deer. Do not turn a hog dog into a deer drive on a WMA.

Public land that actually matters

Texas public deer hunting is real and it is not the magazine cover. TPWD sold 60,713 APH permits last year. The $48 Annual Public Hunting permit (valid Sept. 1, 2026–Aug. 31, 2027) opens more than 180 wildlife management areas, state parks, and leased dove fields on top of a hunting license. Youth under 17 hunt free with an adult APH holder. The $12 Limited Public Use permit is hiking and camping, not hunting. This year’s printed Map Booklet is the last one; use the online area search. The how-to lives on hunting national forest land and the public land deer hunting hub. What a WMA actually is lives on wildlife management areas. Destination pages live under Places. Lease-versus-public math is on public land vs lease deer hunting.

No dedicated Texas forest URL is live on WorldDeer, so use this state page and the official maps. Hunt 0.8 to 1.6 miles off the easy two-track. Last 200 yards thick or wet.

  • Sam Houston National Forest / Sam Houston WMA — about 163,000 acres in Montgomery, Walker, and San Jacinto counties, 50 miles north of Houston. Loblolly, mixed pine-hardwood, Lone Star Hiking Trail traffic, suburbs pushing in. Forest Service office in New Waverly. This is the East Texas public hunt I would actually book on an APH. Huntsville is the base. Map: Sam Houston National Forest.
  • Davy Crockett National Forest / Alabama Creek WMA — about 160,500 acres in Houston and Trinity counties. Ratcliff Lake is the pretty parking lot. Alabama Creek is about 14,560 acres of cooperative WMA inside that forest. For 2026–27, USFS antlerless and buck deer permits on Forest Service WMAs are a draw. Deadline September 15, 2026. APH required to apply. Alabama Creek adult antlerless: 65 permits, 368 applicants last year, baiting not allowed, hunt dates Nov. 7, 2026–Jan. 3, 2027. Do not show up opening morning assuming a walk-in rifle doe. Map: National Forests and Grasslands in Texas.
  • Angelina National Forest / Bannister WMA — about 153,300 acres around Sam Rayburn Reservoir (Angelina, Jasper, San Augustine, Nacogdoches). Bannister is about 25,660 acres. Same USFS drawn deer-permit system. Pine, lake edge, boat-ramp pressure on weekends.
  • Sabine National Forest / Moore Plantation WMA — about 160,800 acres on the Louisiana line (Sabine, Shelby, San Augustine, Newton, Jasper). Moore Plantation is about 26,500 acres. Toledo Bend is the other lake. This is the Texas version of a Kisatchie pine walk, not a South Texas sendero.
  • Caddo and Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands — about 38,200 acres north of Dallas–Fort Worth in Fannin, Wise, and Montague counties. Caddo WMA / Bois d’Arc Unit is in the same USFS drawn-permit list. Prairie, post oak, closer to the metro headlights. Decatur is the ranger-district town.
  • Drawn hunts on WMAs and state parks — the other public door. Deadlines are the 1st and 15th of each month August through November 1. Application fees are $0, $3, or $10. Many gun hunts then charge $80 or $130 if you are drawn. 2026–27 added hunts on new state-park acreage including Bear Creek, Silver Lake, Post Oak Ridge, plus added ground at Caprock Canyons, Enchanted Rock, and Honey Creek. Catalog: TPWD drawn hunt catalog. Black Gap and Matador are the west Texas WMA names people drop; they are still a draw, not a walk-in trophy ranch.
  • Corps of Engineers reservoirs — the overlooked ribbon if a WMA lot looks like a boat ramp. Rules live on how to hunt Army Corps land for deer. I have burned a morning on a gate that was legal last year and locked this year.
  • Cross Bar BLM, Potter County — the rare Panhandle public scrap near Lake Meredith, also in the drawn-hunt catalog. Confirm current access before you drive from Amarillo assuming a national-forest walk-in.

East Texas pine is also timber-company country. Some of that is leased to TPWD for APH; some is a private lease with a different gate code. Notes that change a trip are on timber company land in the South.

If Sam Houston is slammed, I do not invent a child URL. I hunt a nastier access on the same forest, or I slide to Davy Crockett with the USFS permit already in the mail. If a Bannister lot looks like a Black Friday sale, I leave and hunt a smaller tract or a midweek sit. Louisiana’s Kisatchie and Oklahoma’s Ouachita side are sibling hunts for a multi-state year. They are not a same-weekend backup from Huntsville.

Lease reality: this is still a private-land state

The deer you saw on a South Texas Instagram live behind a gate. Landowners who lease hunting rights need a hunting-lease license displayed on the property: $79 for 1–499 acres, $147 for 500–999, $252 for 1,000-plus. That is the landowner’s paper, not yours. You still need the hunting license and written permission. MLDP properties get longer seasons and tags that do not count against the statewide five. Harvest Option antlerless runs Oct. 3, 2026–Feb. 28, 2027; Conservation Option is the biologist-written version. I am not pasting a ranch brochure as a public-land plan.

Lease math lives on average deer lease price per acre by state. What I actually see quoted: Texas $12–$40 per acre for a native deer lease, with South Texas trophy ground and high-fence packages well above that. Cheap acres with a corn feeder are not Iowa genetics. If you are shopping “affordable,” read affordable deer hunting leases before you sign a Hill Country PDF. APH will not replace a managed ranch. It will put you on mapped pine if you e-scout.

One tactic that works in brush, live oak, and pine

I do not still-hunt pretty oaks all day and hope. I pick one morning sit tight to bedding and one evening sit on a travel edge, and I only sit there if I can explain why a deer would walk it at 8:10 a.m. Fresh tracks beat last year’s rubs. When I time movement I check deer feeding times, then I let the region change the food: browse and cactus edges in South Texas brush, live oak mast and cedar breaks in the Hill Country, acorns and clearcut regrowth in East Texas pine, wheat and CRP edges in the Panhandle.

South Texas lease: hunt the first brushy bend off the sendero, not the feeder the whole camp can see from the bunkhouse. Hill Country: hunt the oak flat just off the cedar, and do not confuse an axis track for a whitetail. East Texas public: hunt the hardwood drain inside the pine, 0.8 to 1.6 miles off the two-track — the same saddle-and-bench idea I use on the Ozarks public-land guide. Panhandle mule: glass farther, sit the leeward rim, and do not take a 19-inch mule in a 20-inch county.

Wind is not optional. I pick setups where a bad swirl dumps into a creek or dead space, not into the bed — same lesson as do deer move in the wind, just dustier and hotter. I wasted money on $400 ozone scent control that made zero difference. Bow in timber: 30 yards unless the lane is wide and the deer is calm. Centerfire on a sendero: still a backstop. Refresh shot placement and the after the shot hub before opening weekend. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her.

Pressure: the rifle opener is a holiday

Texas’s November 7 rifle opener is a cultural event. Every national-forest pull-off with a gravel pad will have a truck in it. That is not a reason to stay home. It is a reason to hunt like public land deer: hunters cluster near roads, peak on opening weekend, and quit when the walk gets steep or the pine gets thick. I hunt the opener off easy access, I hunt midweek of the first gun week if I can take the days, and I hunt late archery when October is still 85 degrees and the crowd is still at football. Highest pressure: Sam Houston on Saturday of gun, and any WMA lot you can see from the highway. Lowest: a Wednesday in January on a nasty pine sidehill, or a midweek drawn-hunt compartment you actually won.

Where to stay, and why the town matters

Pick a base for the side of the state you are actually hunting. Drive time to the gate, a grocery that is open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. Hunters do not all want hotels. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet clothes. October archery is a meat race; a room with a freezer or a cabin with a porch for a cooler is worth more than a pool.

Uvalde, TX — South Texas brush. Lease country, long drives between gates, rooms and a grocery after a ranch road. Stay here if you actually signed the ranch, not if you only have an APH PDF.

Mason, TX — Hill Country live oak, axis overlap, quieter than Kerrville on a rut weekend. Grocery, processor options, and a shorter drive to cedar country.

Nacogdoches, TX — East Texas public scraps, Angelina and Davy Crockett access. The APH trip, not a high-fence brochure.

Huntsville, TX — Sam Houston gateway. New Waverly is closer to the ranger office; Huntsville has the late grocery and a real town if the weather dies.

Alpine, TX — Trans-Pecos mule deer. Short rifle season. Confirm carcass disposal before you haul a mule east.

Canyon, TX — Panhandle mule and Palo Duro country. Process close. Do not treat a 16-day rifle window like a two-month Hill Country sit.

Processors, ice, and getting a deer out

Call a processor before you shoot, especially for the gun opener. East Texas shops drown in deer the first weekend. Hill Country shops book around Thanksgiving. Ask two questions: are you taking CWD-area deer, and when can I actually pick up meat. I am not inventing shop names that change. Leave unused carcass parts at the property when you can. That is the CWD-smart play, not a slogan.

I process my own deer in the garage when I can, taught by my uncle who was a butcher. On a Texas road trip I still want a backup shop and a cooler plan. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before, twice if archery is still 85 degrees. A Sam Houston drag through yaupon can be 900 yards of pain. I keep cheap climbing sticks in the truck so I can hang 18 feet off a pine instead of hoping a sendero oak hides me.

Find a game cooler on Amazon Amazon associate tag checkcheck-20. We may earn a commission.

Tag it immediately, then report it if your county is on the mandatory list. How to tag a deer is the mechanics; Texas wants the license tag on the animal before you field-dress or move it, property name and county filled in. Field work is how to field dress a deer. Brush-country deer run lighter than corn-fed Illinois deer, so I size coolers with how much meat from a deer. Oklahoma’s opener is a different calendar. Louisiana is ten deer areas. Hunt one state honestly.

Highway miles in the Hill Country and East Texas pine are real deer country after dark. If you clip one on the drive, the checklist is on what to do if you hit a deer; the state-by-state collision picture is on deer collisions by state.

Wild diet here is browse, mast, and whatever wheat or feeder corn is next door. The wild menu is on what do deer eat. If you are staying in a Hill Country cabin yard, do deer eat hostas is the garden answer, not a hunting tactic.

FAQ

Do I need a draw tag to hunt deer in Texas?

No for a general native-deer license. Resident $25 or nonresident $315 is over the counter. Drawn hunts are the public-land upgrade: state parks, many WMAs, and USFS deer permits on Alabama Creek, Bannister, Moore Plantation, Caddo, and Sam Houston WMA. USFS deer-permit deadline for 2026–27 is September 15, 2026. Axis on private land is a hunting license, not a deer draw.

When is Texas deer rifle season?

For 2026–27, general season opens November 7 in both zones. North Zone runs through January 3, 2027. South Zone through January 17. Archery is October 3–November 6. Confirm your county. Last checked September 8, 2026 on the TPWD deer page.

Can I bait deer in Texas?

On private land, yes. On most TPWD public hunting lands, no, unless that unit authorizes it. I hunt public without bait. Hogs will find the same corn — see hogs in deer feeders.

Can I hunt deer with dogs?

No. Dogs may not be used to hunt deer in this state.

Can I hunt on Sunday?

Yes. Sunday deer hunting is legal statewide.

Can I fly in, buy a license, and hunt public land this week?

Yes: nonresident general $315 plus APH $48. That is not the South Texas hunt people mean. Confirm unit rules in the public hunting maps. Baiting is generally illegal on those units. Wear the orange.

Where should a first-timer go?

If you need to see deer and you have lease money, hunt a Hill Country or South Texas ranch you actually signed and take a legal antlerless deer. If you want a woods trip you can afford, hunt Sam Houston or Davy Crockett with the APH already bought and the USFS permit applied for. Do not expect Illinois numbers on a pine two-track.

What about CWD and eating the deer?

Have it tested if you are near a known detection, and do not eat a sick-looking animal. Testing is on get your deer tested. Follow statewide carcass-disposal rules. Wear the orange on public land. Report the harvest in the listed counties within 24 hours.

I am not a guide. I am a public-land hunter who has eaten tag soup on both sides of a state line, and I have watched friends overpay for a Texas gate code they did not scout. If you pick the hunt on purpose — lease, APH pine, mule window, or axis — stay near a grocery and a processor, and hunt fresh sign off the easy access, Texas will give you a shot. When it does, slow down, make it count, and enjoy the drag.
