Buy the right stack before you park at Assunpink
I have watched Pennsylvania plates roll into an Assunpink lot with a home-state license in the console, and I have watched people buy a New Jersey firearm license and walk in on Fall Bow. You need a New Jersey bow license, firearm license, or All-Around for the season you are hunting — and, on permit seasons, the zone paper on top. National walkthrough: how to get a hunting license. Step 1: Hunter education
New Jersey is not a 1960 birth-year state. A regular firearm or bow license needs a hunter-education course-completion card for that discipline. Finish the free HunterCourse.com New Jersey program, pass the 100-question test, then book a live-fire at hunter-ed registration. Bow and firearm are separate range days, March through November. Office: hunter education, (856) 629-0552. First-time buyers go in person unless the card is already on the profile — staff can take two to three days after live-fire. Nonresidents bring home-state hunter ed, get a Conservation ID, and show the paperwork (license information, buy a license). Apprentice is how you hunt while that is unfinished.
Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is six months in New Jersey, not a Hunterdon weekend house. Online resident purchases want a New Jersey driver license; agents take that or an MVC non-driver photo ID. A Pennsylvania address with a Salem permission slip is a nonresident cart. Active-duty U.S. service members may buy resident with proof of duty and hunter ed (or apprentice). Disabled-veteran and National Guard licenses are free only after Fish & Wildlife or DMAVA certifies you. Confirm on license information.
Nonresident deer hunting is over the counter. That is why this trip is not Iowa. Cost band on the 2026–27 fee table: resident firearm and bow in the high-$20s to low-$30s, All-Around in the low-$70s, nonresident firearm or bow in the mid-$100s. Confirm the line the week you buy.
Step 3: What goes in the cart
New Jersey does not sell “a deer license.” It sells a method stack:
- Conservation ID and Child Support Certification. Annual, before the first purchase of the year — online, or in person if that first buy is at an agent. Skip it and the cart dies.
- Bow path: Bow & Arrow license (or All-Around). That is Fall Bow and Winter Bow. Permit Bow still needs the antlerless zone or Multi-Zone permit, plus a bow-season buck permit if you want a buck.
- Firearm path: Firearm license (or All-Around). That is Six-Day Firearm. Permit Shotgun and Permit Muzzleloader add the antlerless permit and, if you want a buck, the matching buck permit. A bow during Six-Day Firearm means both licenses, or All-Around.
- Rifle Permit to carry a muzzleloading rifle or a smoothbore muzzleloader firing a single projectile. It is not a deer tag. Apprentice holders cannot buy it.
- Zone antlerless or DRS Multi-Zone for that permit season, then one Antlered Buck Permit. Multi-Zone is listed as “DRS Multi-Zone” — High, Medium, or Low, one season at a time.
The nonresident 2-day small-game firearm license is not valid for deer. Farmer exemptions cover the farm you live on, with a CID — not a WMA lot. Same official table: adult zone or buck permits in the high-$20s, Multi-Zone in the mid-$50s, Rifle Permit around $10.
Step 4: When it goes on sale
Buy the hunting license once hunter ed is on file. It expires December 31. All deer permits go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday, September 14, 2026, and run until that season ends. If you buy antlerless before the season opens and you want a buck, the buck-permit deadlines are Permit Bow by October 31 at 11:59 p.m., Permit Muzzleloader by November 30, Permit Shotgun by December 16. If your first antlerless buy is after the season opens, the buck permit has to be in that same transaction. Permits are non-refundable once you leave the agent. Zones 45 and 46 have no permit seasons this year — do not buy paper for a closed season.
How you carry it, tag it, and report it
Display the license on outer clothing, not under a pack. Do not heat-laminate the durable copy (license information). Do not move the deer until a transportation tag is on it — name, CID, date, season, zone, county, township, Deer Management Unit, antler points if a buck. Fill the harvest-report stub on the license; that stub is not the tag. Report by 10 p.m. the day of harvest on the Automated Harvest Report System or (855) 448-6865, then write the confirmation number on the tag. Public land does not need a second license — Special Areas do
Stokes, Wharton, Assunpink, Colliers Mills, and the WMA list take the same New Jersey hunting license. They do not take a Pennsylvania license or a Zone 9 antlerless permit in a Zone 1 lot. Special Area zones 39, 54, 61, 64, 66, 67, 68, and 71 have their own access rules — buy after the property has said yes. Maps: state hunting guide and public land deer hunting. Sunday deer hunting is archery only, on WMAs and private property — not state parks or forests. Centerfire and rimfire rifles are illegal for deer. Stand habits: tree stand safety.
Youth and first-timers
Youth firearm and bow licenses are free from age 10 until December 31 of the year the hunter turns 16, after hunter ed. Ages 10–13 hunt with a licensed adult 21 or older. Youth are exempt from antler-point restrictions. Apprentice is the try-it path: bow from 14, firearm from 18, mentor 21-plus, two per type per lifetime. Still buy the deer permits. Not valid for muzzleloader deer or a Rifle Permit, and not proof of hunter ed later. First sit: deer hunting for beginners. Crossing a border: planning an out-of-state deer hunt.
Common ways this goes wrong
- A Pennsylvania or New York license on New Jersey dirt because “it’s the same river.”
- Fall Bow on a firearm-only license, or Six-Day Firearm with a bow and no bow license.
- Permit Shotgun or Permit Bow with only the hunting license — or a muzzleloader with no Rifle Permit.
- Missing the October 31 / November 30 / December 16 buck-permit deadlines.
- A Special Area or Zones 45/46 permit season that is not actually open to you.
- The 2-day small-game ticket, treated like a deer tag.
- Moving the deer before the transportation tag is on it, or reporting after 10 p.m.
