Updated on September 7, 2026. Confirm every fee, lottery deadline, and hunter-education rule on the Connecticut DEEP hunting and trapping licenses page before you buy. This is the field readout, not the proclamation.

Who this is for Resident and nonresident whitetail hunters in Connecticut. There is no mule deer tag here.
Buy it here DEEP Online Outdoor Licensing System, town clerks, some outdoor retailers, or select DEEP offices.
Hunter education Required unless you held a Connecticut resident license in that discipline within the last five years. CE/FS firearms or a separate bowhunter course. Online coursework must include a field day. Out-of-state apprentice cards do not count.
What you actually buy Archery: Small Game and Deer Archery Permit. Firearms: Firearms Hunting License plus a method-specific deer permit. Revolver needs a separate endorsement. Landowner deer permit is free if you qualify.
OTC vs draw Private land and no-lottery state land are OTC. Named forests, WMAs, and water-company blocks go through a January lottery. Lottery or no-lottery shotgun — not both.
License year Calendar year. Lottery applications open in early January; leftover lottery permits recycle in mid-March.
Antlerless / bonus Zone rules. Zones 11 and 12 (suburban southwest) get extra antlerless and replacement tags. Zones 2 and 4A do not honor the antlerless-only tag.
WMA / public extras No second “WMA license” for no-lottery state land. Lottery covers Yale-Myers, MDC reservoirs, Centennial Watershed, and a short WMA list. Aquarion archery needs their own access permit.
Youth / apprentice Minimum hunt age is 12. Ages 12–15 buy a junior license and hunt with a licensed adult 18 or older. No mentored adult shortcut.

Buy the permit before you argue with a stone wall

I have watched people show up in Voluntown with a Massachusetts license and a story about “it’s the same woods.” Connecticut does not care. You need a Connecticut deer product — the archery permit, or a firearms license plus the right deer permit — including Pachaug and a Ridgefield backyard with a signed consent form. National walkthrough: how to get a hunting license. Seasons and parking lots: Connecticut hunting guide.

Step 1: Hunter education

DEEP will not sell you a hunting license unless you held a Connecticut resident license in that discipline within the last five years, or you show a Conservation Education/Firearms Safety (CE/FS) certificate — or a recognized equivalent — for the discipline you are buying. That is not Michigan’s 1960 birth-year cutoff. Firearms: a two-day traditional class, or an approved online course plus a full in-person field day. Online-only does not cut it. Bowhunting is a separate CE/FS bowhunter course; a previous archery stamp or a combo class from another state is not proof. The card has to say bowhunter. Course age is 10; hunting age is 12. Classes are free. Listings: Connecticut hunter education. Out-of-state hunter ed: email the certificate, a photo of your driver’s license, and your Connecticut Conservation ID to [email protected]. Verification can take multiple weeks. They will not accept an online-only certificate. Do this in August, not the Friday before shotgun.

Step 2: Resident or not

Residency is where you live, not where your in-laws have a cabin in Litchfield. A New York or Massachusetts address is a nonresident cart. I am not inventing a day-count test DEEP does not print on the license page — if the vendor asks for a Connecticut ID, that is the answer. Nonresidents can buy the same deer products over the counter. The lottery is open to you too. The cheap three-day out-of-state bird SKU does not tag a deer.

Active full-time U.S. armed forces members pay resident license fees with proof of service carried in the field; those licenses are issued at DEEP or town clerk offices. Residents 65 and older get a free annual firearms hunting license once hunter ed is on file. Confirm both on the 2026 licenses page. Driving in: planning an out-of-state deer hunt. Neighbors: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York.

Step 3: What goes in the cart

Connecticut does not sell “a deer license.” It sells a method stack:

  1. Conservation ID. Create one in the online system first. It is your license number. Two IDs will lock the cart — email [email protected] if you already made a mess.
  2. Archery path: Small Game and Deer Archery Permit. Bow and crossbow on state and private land. Bowhunter ed on file.
  3. Firearms path: Firearms Hunting License, then one shotgun-style deer permit — State Land Lottery, State Land No-Lottery, or Private Land Shotgun/Rifle. Muzzleloader is a separate permit. You cannot hold lottery shotgun and no-lottery shotgun in the same year.
  4. Revolver endorsement only on private land of 10 or more acres when the consent form allows it, plus the carry permit the town already requires.
  5. Landowner deer permit if you own 10 or more contiguous acres. Free. Spouses, lineal descendants, parents, grandparents, and siblings can get additional free permits. If you do not live on that property, you still need the hunting license underneath.

Cost band, not a scraped table: on the 2026 DEEP sheet, resident firearms license plus one deer permit is low two-digit per line; resident archery is mid two-digit; nonresident firearms is high two-digit; nonresident archery is the three-figure line. Junior and 16–17 resident prices are discounted. Open the official fee table the week you buy. Online purchases are signed electronically; a vendor license still has to be printed and signed.

Step 4: When it goes on sale

Deer products are calendar-year. Private-land and no-lottery permits do not wait on a leftover draw. The clock is the lottery. For 2026, DEEP opened applications January 2 at 9:30 a.m. Adults can apply individually or in a group of up to four, for up to six areas, and you find out immediately. Buy by January 31 or you forfeit it. Unsold permits went first-come March 16 at 9:30 a.m. Youth 12–17 use a separate youth lottery — wait until the adult they hunt with has an area. Confirm those dates on the 2026 deer hunting page. Sunday deer hunting is legal on private land only, and not within 40 yards of a blazed public trail (the printed guide said 40 feet; DEEP corrected it). State land is closed Sundays.

How you carry it, tag it, and report it

Print the current harvest tag before you leave. Fill it at the deer and keep it with the animal until it is processed. Report within 24 hours online or at 1-877-337-4868, then write the confirmation number on the tag. Check stations are only for Zone 11/12 replacement tags (carcass or head, within 72 hours). Private land still needs a signed DEEP consent form for the current season. Fluorescent orange (400 square inches) is the default; bowhunters wear it November 18–December 31 except they may drop it in a stand at least 10 feet up. Tree-stand habits: tree stand safety. CWD has not been detected in Connecticut or New England. Debone meat from CWD states before it crosses the line. Natural deer urine is banned. Testing context: CWD in deer.

Public land does not need a second license — lottery land does

No-lottery state forest takes the firearms license plus the no-lottery shotgun permit, or the archery permit — not a private-land shotgun permit. Look at the interactive hunting area map the night you buy. Lottery is how you get into Yale-Myers (Area 51), MDC reservoir blocks, Centennial Watershed, Trout Brook Valley, and a handful of WMAs. Some MDC blocks require age 18, a background check, a waiver, and a pre-hunt meeting. Aquarion archery is a separate company permit. None of that is a second statewide “WMA license.” Woods list: state hunting guide and public land deer hunting — Connecticut has no national forest.

Youth and first-timers

A hunter 12 through 15 buys a junior firearms or junior archery product, finishes hunter ed, and hunts with a licensed adult 18 or older (one adult, two minors). The junior license stays valid if they turn 16 later that calendar year. Resident juniors get the half-price stamp and permit break DEEP publishes each year. Junior deer training days for 2026 run November 7–14 (no Sunday on state land); the adult mentor does not carry a gun and hunt along. Connecticut has no apprentice license that skips hunter ed for adults. Field side: deer hunting for beginners.

Common ways this goes wrong

Where to hunt once the permit is in the truck

Start with the Connecticut deer hunting guide for seasons, Sunday hunting, baiting, and the public-land list. Michigan’s deer license is the OTC contrast — no January lottery for ordinary state land. Rhode Island and Massachusetts are the honest neighbors if you would rather hop a border than fight a Pachaug Saturday, not a same-license cheat.
