Pick the Maryland before you pick a stand.
If you want more deer and extra antlerless tags, hunt Region B — especially the suburban bow counties around Baltimore and D.C. — and accept backyard shots, CWD paperwork, and a Sunday chart that is not statewide.
If you want mountains, bottleneck rifles, and room to walk, hunt Region A in Garrett and Allegany, and accept two antlerless deer for the year, fewer sightings, and a Green Ridge parking lot that fills before daylight on opening Saturday.
If you want the hunt Maryland actually owns, buy a sika stamp and hunt the Dorchester marsh. That is not a whitetail with spots. It is a different animal, a different call, and a different drag.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I still split time between a 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. Maryland is the trip I take when I want three hunts in one license year without flying west. A Saturday on Green Ridge, a Thursday evening in a Montgomery woodlot, and a dawn sit on Fishing Bay do not feel like the same sport. I learned that the hard way in 2019, when I packed a Midwest rattling bag into a phragmites flat and spent two hours educating every sika in earshot.

Species: a whitetail state with a sika footnote that is not a footnote
Most of Maryland is white-tailed deer country. Farm-edge deer in Frederick and Carroll, ridge deer in Garrett, and the over-browse problem in Montgomery yards that shows up as hostas disappearing — see do deer eat hostas if that is your actual problem. There is no mule deer tag. In a 12-acre woodlot or a Fishing Bay cedar swamp, most honest shots are inside 40 yards.
Sika are why people fly into BWI with marsh boots. Separate bag, separate stamp, separate pages: sika deer and sika vs whitetail. An antlered sika is any deer with one antler visible above the hairline. The 2026–27 sika bag is three deer, no more than one antlered, in each weapon season — independent of your whitetail bag. Bonus antlered stamps do not apply. Archery is open in every county; the deer are not. In 2025–26 Dorchester produced 3,439 of the state’s 3,910 sika. Wicomico had 313, Worcester 118, Somerset 36, Caroline 4. If your plan is “I’ll just shoot a sika in Frederick,” you are hunting a rumor.

Two 2026–27 facts that actually change a trip: the Suburban Deer Management Zone — Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George’s — now has an unlimited archery antlerless bag, and the nonresident sika stamp is $200. Region A (Allegany, Garrett, and western Washington County west of the mapped line) still caps you at two antlerless whitetails for the regular seasons, one per day, plus one extra antlerless on primitive days. Region B archery antlerless is 15; muzzleloader and firearms antlerless are 10 each. Statewide antlered whitetail bag is two, no more than one per weapon season. A bonus stamp cannot put two antlered deer in Region A in the same weapon season. One antlered deer may be under the three-points-on-one-antler rule; any additional antlered deer must meet it.
OTC vs draw, and what it actually costs
Deer hunting in Maryland is over the counter. Buy the license, buy the method stamp for the season you are in, and if you are chasing sika buy that stamp before you hunt one. The $200 nonresident sika stamp is the sticker shock, not the $160 base license. I decide stamps at the kitchen table, not in a Dorchester gas station at 4:40 a.m. Licenses run through the next July 31. Hunter education is required for first-timers. Harvest reporting is mandatory. Tag it, then check it in and get a confirmation number before you quarter a CWDMA deer for the ride home — how to tag a deer. If you are coming from out of state, read planning an out-of-state deer hunt before you book a cabin around the firearms opener. Maryland is cheap compared with a western draw. It is not a walk-in-and-shoot state on public land in November.
CWD, EHD, baiting, Sundays, and dogs
Chronic wasting disease is not a rumor here. Maryland’s first hunter-killed positive was November 2010 in Allegany County. Through 2025–26 DNR has 354 positives, including 112 in Allegany Harvest Management Unit 233 — 42 of those on Green Ridge State Forest. The CWDMA is Allegany, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, and Washington, public and private. Do not drive a whole carcass out of that box. Meat or quarters with no spine or head, a cleaned hide, a cleaned skull plate, and a finished mount can leave. Whole animals go only to a listed processor, taxidermist, or a landfill inside the CWDMA. Natural cervid urine is a CWD vector. DNR wants synthetic lures hung above deer height, or skip them. I skip them. After the 2025 late-summer EHD outbreak in central and southern Maryland, dead deer in creeks were not all CWD. That is EHD, and DNR tied part of the 14.9% harvest drop to it. Not a reason to cancel a 2026 sit. A reason not to assume last year’s camera deer is still alive.
Baiting is legal on private land and illegal on state-owned or state-controlled property. I have watched people dump corn on a Green Ridge two-track and then act surprised when Natural Resources Police cared. Sunday hunting is legal in 20 of 23 counties, but “legal” does not mean this WMA, this morning, until dark. Many counties are private-land only. Designated public Sunday hunting exists on named tracts in Allegany, Cecil, Dorchester, Garrett, St. Mary’s, and Washington — not every green polygon. Some Sundays end at 10:30 a.m. Dogs and drones cannot hunt deer. A tracking dog or drone may find a wounded deer after you call Natural Resources Police at 800-628-9944. Public land that actually matters
Maryland is not a national-forest state. The useful acreage is state forest, Chesapeake Forest Lands, and WMAs. Maps and tract lists live in the public hunting lands chapter. This is the short list I would spend gas on.
- Green Ridge State Forest — nearly 49,000 acres in Allegany off I-68. Biggest western public block and the CWD hotspot (42 positives on the forest). Hunt 400 to 900 yards off the obvious road. Opening Saturday is headlights. No live Green Ridge child URL exists, so I am not inventing one.
- Savage River State Forest — more than 55,000 acres, mostly Garrett. Biggest state forest. Snow, laurel, and a drag that teaches you why people hunt closer to the truck. Slide to Potomac-Garrett if the lots look like a holiday boat ramp.
- Dan’s Mountain WMA — 10,622 acres. Steeper than the postcard version of western Maryland. Backup when Green Ridge is slammed. Still Region A bags and CWDMA rules.
- Indian Springs WMA — about 6,600 acres in Washington County. Check the mapped Region A line before you assume a 15-doe Region B bag.
- Fishing Bay WMA — about 30,000 acres in Dorchester. Largest WMA. Sika marsh, tidal guts, September mosquitoes, October circus. Boat or a long wet walk. I ruined leather boots here in 2018.
- Chesapeake Forest Lands — about 75,000 acres of scattered timber in five lower-Shore counties. Not one forest. Stay 150 yards from occupied buildings and 150 feet from exterior boundaries. Quiet alternative when Fishing Bay is a parking lot.
- Idylwild WMA — about 3,600 acres in Caroline. Shore farm-woods, not sika headquarters.
Suburban public dirt is different: Patuxent River State Park (CWD positive in HMU 411), reservoir archery permits at Liberty, Loch Raven, and Prettyboy, and county parks with their own applications. If Green Ridge is slammed, I hunt a nastier access on the same forest or I slide to Dan’s Mountain. If Fishing Bay is slammed, I pick a smaller CFL parcel. Pennsylvania’s Allegheny and Virginia’s mountain public land are sibling hunts for a multi-state year. They are not a same-weekend backup from Cumberland.
One tactic that works in three Marylands
I do not still-hunt pretty oaks all day and hope. I pick one morning sit tight to bedding and one evening sit on a travel edge, and I only sit there if I can explain why a deer would walk it at 8:10 a.m. Fresh tracks beat last year’s rubs. When I time movement I check deer feeding times, then I let the region change the food: soybeans in Frederick, acorns on Savage River, marsh edges for sika.
Region A: hunt the ugly side of the ridge. Thermals dump into the hollow at mid-morning. I wasted a November sit on a scenic Green Ridge oak flat and watched deer bed 80 yards below me in laurel. Wind is not optional — same lesson as do deer move in the wind, just steeper. Region B farm country: hunt the fencerow other people skip. Firearm opener is a drive whether you signed up for one or not. Suburban zone: hunt the 8-acre woodlot with no parking, bow only, and a backstop. Unlimited antlerless does not mean unlimited safe shots. Sika: still-hunt the marsh edge at first light and listen for the whistle. Do not rattle. Rubber boots, not broken-in leather. Cover swallows a bad hit. I decide max range before I climb. Bow in timber or marsh: 30 yards unless the lane is wide and the deer is calm. Shotgun in farm country: a backstop and a “no farther than that oak” line. Refresh shot placement and the after the shot hub before opening weekend. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her. Maryland’s retrieve rule is not optional: if you wound it, you try to recover it, and you need written permission to follow it onto someone else’s land.
Pressure: the firearms opener is a holiday, the bow woods are not empty
Maryland’s regular firearms season is two weeks, but every easy Green Ridge pull-off and every Fishing Bay ramp will have a truck in it on Nov. 28. Hunt like public land: people cluster near roads, peak on opening weekend, and quit when the walk gets wet or steep. I hunt the opener 400 to 900 yards off easy access, midweek if I can take the days, and late archery in the suburban zone when antlerless tags still matter. Frederick County led 2025–26 at 6,342 deer. That is not a secret honey hole. Sunday harvest was 6,998 deer — 9.8% of the statewide total. A lot of those came off private land. Do not assume the WMA gate is open because a forum map tinted the county “Sunday.”
Where to stay, and why the town matters
Pick a base for the Maryland you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery that is open after dark, and a processor who will take a CWDMA deer matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. Hunters do not all want hotels. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet clothes.
Cumberland, MD — Green Ridge and Allegany CWD country. I-68, grocery, and approved processors if you do not want to bone a deer in a hotel bathtub.
Oakland, MD — Savage River, Potomac-Garrett, Deep Creek services. Cook in the cabin. Snow plan in December.
Hagerstown, MD — Washington County and Indian Springs. Halfway between the mountains and Frederick. Confirm which side of the Region A line you are hunting before you unpack.
Frederick, MD — highest county harvest, CWD drop-off culture, processors that already know the opener is chaos. Meat hunt, not a wilderness trip.
Cambridge, MD — sika marsh. Closest real town to Fishing Bay. Ice, boat ramps, and a place to dry waders.
Salisbury, MD — lower Shore CFL parcels, Wicomico and Worcester sika without committing to a Dorchester overnight.
Processors, ice, and getting a deer out
Call a processor before you shoot, especially for a CWDMA deer and the firearms opener. Ask two questions: are you on DNR’s approved list, and when can I actually pick up meat. If they say “call us after you kill one,” keep calling down the list. DNR publishes the shops on the CWD page — Frostburg, Orleans, Frederick, Hagerstown, Westminster, and others. I am not turning that into a directory. Use it.
I process my own deer in the garage when I can. On a Maryland road trip I still want a backup shop and a cooler plan. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before. A Fishing Bay mud drag can be worse than a frozen-ground slog because nothing slides. Field work is how to field dress a deer. Sika run smaller than a corn-fed Illinois doe. Maryland also has a Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry pipeline and a tax credit for donated deer. If your freezer is full and the suburban zone is handing you unlimited antlerless, that is the honest use of the extra tags.

Do I need a draw tag to hunt deer in Maryland?
No. Deer licenses and stamps are OTC. Bear is a lottery. You still need the right method stamp, and a sika stamp before you hunt sika.
When is Maryland firearm deer season?

Can I bait deer in Maryland?

If you need to see deer, hunt a Region B weekday sit and take a legal antlerless deer. If you want mountains, hunt Savage River or the ugly side of Green Ridge. If you came for sika, hunt Dorchester with marsh boots and the sika ID page open the night before.
Are rifles legal in suburban Maryland?
Bottleneck rifles are limited to designated counties and mapped parts of Frederick and Worcester. Shotguns and straight-walled cartridges are legal statewide during firearms and junior hunt days. I still will not take a long poke with a bad backstop in a neighborhood woodlot.
What about CWD and eating the deer?
Have it tested if you are in the CWDMA, and do not eat a sick-looking animal. Testing: get your deer tested. Symptoms: CWD deer symptoms. Do not haul a whole carcass out of the seven-county box.
