Buy the Delaware license before you cross the canal
I have watched Maryland and Pennsylvania plates pull into a Redden lot with a home-state license in the console. Delaware does not care that you “hunt the Shore.” You need a Delaware hunting license, or a valid LEN, to hang a deer here. The national walkthrough lives at how to get a hunting license. Step 1: Hunter education
Delaware Code Title 7 and the DNREC license page require an approved hunter-education course if you were born after January 1, 1967. Some printed-guide footnotes say “on or after” — confirm on DNREC the week you buy. The course is a 10-hour basic with live fire. Online vendors exist; you still attend Delaware’s field day. Other-state cards are accepted if you upload them in Digital DNREC (up to five business days) or show the physical card to an agent. Minimum age is 10. Register at hunter education. Born on or before that cutoff: you skip hunter ed. You do not skip the license, the LEN, or the Harvest Report Card.
Step 2: Resident or not
Delaware residency is not a beach house and a Pennsylvania tax return. Live in Delaware at least one year before you buy a resident license, and claim only one U.S. state — the one on your federal return. A Maryland address with a Kent County lease is a nonresident.
Nonresident adult hunting licenses are sold over the counter. Confirm the current price band on the DNREC fee sheet the week you buy. Resident adult licenses sit under $50 on that sheet; nonresident adult licenses sit in the $200 band. I am not pasting a number that will be wrong next July. Step 3: What goes in the cart
Think in layers, not “a deer license.” Buy the adult hunting license (16–64 resident; 16+ nonresident) — not the 3-day small-game ticket. It comes with a Deer Harvest Report Card holding four antlerless tags. Punch and date in ink before you move the deer; do not tear the card apart. Buck tags are extra: residents buy the Hunter’s Choice / Quality Buck combo (either-sex plus a 15-inch-spread buck); nonresidents buy one antlered tag (three inches of antler or more) and one Quality Buck tag. Two antlered deer is the cap. Extra antlerless tags, a Conservation Access Pass, the stand/blind permit, and park registration are add-ons only if you need them.
License-exempt hunters (resident 65+, kids under 13, qualifying farm occupants, some veterans) still pull a free LEN every year and still get a Harvest Report Card. Skip the LEN and you cannot register a deer.
Step 4: When it goes on sale
The license year starts July 1. Buy when Digital DNREC opens the new year if you hunt opening week of archery. Wait until the Friday before November firearms and you will still get a regular license in a normal year — Delaware is not Iowa. What disappears is a numbered lottery stand at Blackbird or White Clay, not the tag. Hunter-ed verification is the delay that wrecks opening morning. Upload the card in August.
How you carry it, punch it, and report it
Delaware allows a digital hunting license. Deer hunters still carry a paper Harvest Report Card. Punch it and write the date in ink before you move the deer or field-dress it. Register within 24 hours at Digital DNREC or 1-855-DEL-HUNT (1-855-335-4868). Write the 12-digit number on the card. If you buy extra tags later, carry the newest card DNREC prints. Antlered reports need outside spread (15 inches or greater, or less) and points one inch or longer. Delaware confirmed its first wild CWD case in 2026. Read carcass and bait rules on DNREC CWD before you haul a whole deer across a county line. Symptoms: CWD in deer.
Public land does not need a second deer license — it needs the right extra
Redden, Blackbird, Taber, Midlands, and the wildlife areas take the same Delaware hunting license. They do not take a Maryland license, a 3-day small-game ticket, or bait. Baiting is private land only, and banned inside the CWD management zone even on private dirt. Hunter orange (400 square inches) is required when a firearm deer season is open. Firearm deer hunting on several areas is a daily lottery (White Clay Creek State Park, Augustine, Blackbird, Cedar Swamp, Woodland Beach except Lighthouse Island, portions of Little Creek, Ted Harvey, portions of Assawoman). Show up about 1.5 hours before shooting time and buy the stand/blind permit if you will sit a state stand. Quality Buck tracts will not let you tag a skinny six. Parks want the park registration. Youth and first-timers
Kids under 13 hunt on a LEN with a licensed (or exempt) adult 21 or older. Ages 13–15 buy the junior license, which dies on the 16th birthday — if that falls mid-season, buy the adult license first. Youth 13–15 still need hunter ed. The 2026–27 youth and non-ambulatory deer hunts are September 26–27 and November 7–8, 2026; the adult companion may not carry a firearm that weekend. Common ways this goes wrong
- A Maryland or Pennsylvania license on Delaware dirt because “it’s the same peninsula.”
- Buying the nonresident 3-day license and expecting it to cover a buck.
- No hunter-ed card uploaded, born after January 1, 1967.
- Tearing “tags” off the Harvest Report Card. Delaware wants the card intact.
- Skipping the Conservation Access Pass, then parking at Assawoman.
- A skinny six on a Quality Buck tract, or a second antlered deer after both buck tags are used.
