Buy the tag before you book the motel
I have watched people drive to Ironwood with a Wisconsin license in the console. Michigan does not care that you “hunt the border.” You need a Michigan deer license to hang a deer on Michigan dirt, including Ottawa and the rest of the UP forests.

Step 1: Hunter education
If you were born on or after January 1, 1960, Michigan wants a hunter-education certificate before it will sell you a hunting license. Online courses exist; some still need a field day. If you already passed hunter ed in another state, Michigan usually honors it — bring the card or the number, do not assume the vendor can “look you up.”
Under that birth year, you are generally exempt from hunter ed, but you are not exempt from buying the license.
Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is not “I have a cabin.” It is domicile — where you actually live, with the usual DNR tests (driver’s license, voter registration, time in state). A Wisconsin address with a Watersmeet camp is a nonresident. Buy the wrong class and you have a ticket, not a story.
Nonresident deer licenses in Michigan are sold over the counter in a normal year. That is the whole reason a lot of us hunt the UP instead of drawing Iowa. Confirm the current nonresident deer price band on the DNR fee sheet the week you buy; I am not pasting a number that will be wrong in October.
Step 3: What goes in the cart
Think in layers, not “a deer license”:
- Base license (the conservation / hunt-fish foundation Michigan uses that year).
- Deer license — this is the kill tag for your buck, and in many years it also covers a deer of either sex in some units. Read the current deer-license wording. It changes.
- Antlerless license if you want a doe on public or a second deer. These are unit licenses. A leftover private-land antlerless tag does not let you shoot a doe on Ottawa.
- DMAP only if a landowner has unused permits and you are hunting that property.
Combo hunt/fish packages exist. If you already bought a fishing license, do not double-pay for a base you already hold. The eLicense cart will usually block a duplicate; a gas-station vendor might not.
Step 4: When it goes on sale
Michigan puts the next deer year on sale in the spring, long before anyone is thinking about November. If you wait until the Friday before opening day, you will still get a resident or nonresident deer license in a normal year — the part that disappears is public-land antlerless in the good DMUs, and some leftover drawings.

How you carry it, tag it, and report it
Digital licenses in the DNR Hunt Fish app are legal if the current year says they are. I still screenshot the license and keep the kill tags where I can fill them out with gloves on. Tag the deer before you move it. Report the harvest the way DNR asks that year — app, website, or a check station in a CWD zone.

Public land does not need a second license — it needs the right unit
Ottawa, Hiawatha, and the state game areas take the same Michigan deer license. What they do not take is an antlerless tag written for a different DMU, or a private-land leftover you bought because it was cheap. Look up your DMU on the DNR map the night you buy the extra tag, not at the two-track.

Youth and first-timers
Mentored hunting is how a kid or a spouse who has not finished hunter ed can go. The mentor has to be licensed. The mentee has to stay at the mentor’s side under the current distance rule. Do not send them to the other end of a food plot with a rifle and a story about “they’re basically with me.”
Apprentice-style licenses, if DNR is still selling one this year, are for adults who want a season while they finish hunter ed. Confirm the name of the product on the cart. It changes.
Common ways this goes wrong
- Buying only the deer license and skipping the base license.
- A Wisconsin or Minnesota license on Michigan dirt because “it’s the same woods.”
- A private-land antlerless tag in a national-forest parking lot.
- No hunter-ed card at the vendor, born 1960 or later.
- Moving a CWD-zone carcass across the state line because the processor is cheaper at home.
