Pick the New Hampshire you actually want.
If you want more deer, extra antlerless tags, and a chance at a 200-pound field-dressed buck, hunt Wildlife Management Units L and M in the southwest and seacoast — shotgun towns, posted lots, and a first-come special permit.
If you want tracking snow, gated two-tracks, and room to walk, hunt White Mountain National Forest and the Connecticut Lakes — and accept fewer deer, longer drags, and a season that closes early in Unit A.
I have hunted whitetails for 23 years, starting with my dad in southern Missouri when I was 12. I grew up broke, so I learned public land before I ever paid for a lease, and I still split time between my 65-acre lease in Pike County, Illinois and public dirt in the Missouri Ozarks. New Hampshire is the trip I take when I want the New England version of an Upper Peninsula sit: beech ridges, spruce edges, and one honest track in new snow. A Saturday on a Nashua-area woodlot and a Saturday west of Lincoln do not feel like the same sport.

Species: it is a whitetail state with moose in the same woods
New Hampshire is white-tailed deer country. There is no mule deer tag. In mountain laurel, spruce edges, and suburban woodlots, most honest shots are inside 80 yards, and a lot of the good ones are inside 40.
Fish and Game’s digest still puts the statewide herd over 100,000. That is not 100,000 deer on the White Mountains. Southern Units L and M, plus central units like J2 and H2, carry most of the kill. Interior mountain units such as D2E, C1, E, and G2 posted firearm harvests in the dozens in 2025, not the hundreds. North Country deer are the big-bodied animals the trophy program is built for: 200 pounds field-dressed qualifies. The heaviest deer registered in 2025 dressed 248 pounds, taken with a firearm in Rockingham County. That is a seacoast deer, not a Presidential Range rumor.
You will see moose tracks in Unit A and on the national forest. Do not confuse a moose scrape with a deer plan. Suburban deer in Unit M live in hosta beds and 40-acre woodlots. If the garden is the problem, start at do deer eat hostas. This page is the hunt.

Two 2026 changes that actually change a trip: Special Unit L and M antlerless permits are no longer a July lottery. They go first-come, first-served near the end of July online and at Fish and Game headquarters in Concord — 3,500 Unit L permits (one tag, $26) and 4,000 Unit M permits (two tags, $36). And WMU A still shuts archery and firearms a week early. If your cabin is in Pittsburg, that is not a suggestion.
OTC vs extra tags, and what it actually costs
Most New Hampshire deer hunting is over the counter. A regular hunting license is one firearms deer. An archery license is one archery deer, either sex. The Special Archery Deer Permit is a second antlered deer, bow only, and you have to buy it with the archery license — you cannot add it later. The muzzleloader license lets you fill the firearms tag early with a .40-caliber or larger single-shot muzzleloader, a crossbow, or a bow. It does not hand you another kill tag. I decide that at the counter, not in the dark on November 11.

Nonresidents take the hit on the $113 hunting license or the $83 archery license, not on the $26 extra tags. If you are coming from out of state, read planning an out-of-state deer hunt before you book a Lincoln cabin around the firearms opener. Hunter education is required if you have not held a license. Register the deer within 24 hours, online or at a station. Online registration is down for the first two days of muzzleloader and the first three days of firearms — you go in person those days. Tag it in the woods first; how to tag a deer is the mechanics. You may quarter in the field, but the head and hide come out. A conservation officer can ask to see them within 48 hours.
CWD, baiting, Sundays, and dogs
Chronic wasting disease is not a New Hampshire problem yet. Fish and Game has sampled more than 9,000 deer since 2002 with no positives. That is why they ban whole carcasses from CWD states — including New York and Pennsylvania — unless the meat is de-boned. Natural cervid urine is a CWD vector; Fish and Game wants synthetic lures, or skip them.
Baiting is legal in a short window with a permit and a landowner signature. I hunt New Hampshire without it. Corn piles on the White Mountains teach other hunters where to sit, and state-land bait sites are a June paperwork race I would rather spend scouting beech. Sunday hunting is open; the 2026 digest does not close Sunday the way Connecticut still does. Dogs are not a deer-hunting method here. If you hit a deer and lose it, New Hampshire licenses leashed dog trackers who can work at night. Call one instead of pushing a gut shot. I gut-shot a doe in 2007, pushed her too early, and never found her.
Hunter orange is recommended, not required — a hat or vest visible at 200 feet. I wear it during firearms week anyway. You cannot discharge a firearm or bow within 300 feet of a dwelling without permission, or within 150 yards of a White Mountain campsite, developed site, or across a Forest Service road. Drives are capped at six people. Unposted private land is generally open under New Hampshire custom and RSA 635:4 posting law, but Fish and Game still tells you to ask, especially on small southern parcels. A “Posted” sign that does not meet the letter of the statute is still a sign I honor.
Public land that actually matters
New Hampshire looks small on a map and then dumps 751,000 acres of White Mountain National Forest in your lap. Most of it is not “secret.” The useful question is which tracts match the hunt you want. - White Mountain National Forest — 751,000 acres, New Hampshire and a strip of Maine. Hunting is allowed, including Wilderness, under state seasons. Stay 150 yards off campsites and developed sites. Do not shoot across a Forest Service road. Gated roads are the hunt; trailhead lots on a Saturday are the crowd. Lincoln and North Conway are the bases. Hunt 400 to 900 yards off the easy two-track, last 200 yards steep or wet. Confirm you are not standing in Maine without a Maine license.
- Connecticut Lakes Headwaters — more than 146,000 acres of easement around Pittsburg in Unit A. Former paper-company ground, still open to hunting. Low density, big-bodied deer, severe winters, and a season that closes early. Bait permits on this tract go by lottery, not first-come. This is a tracking hunt after the first foot of snow, not a treestand-over-beans hunt.
- Nash Stream Forest — North Country state forest north of the national forest. Fewer hikers than the Presidentials, still real mountains. Pair it with Unit A/B country when Lincoln Woods is a zoo.
- Pisgah State Park — about 13,000 acres in southwest New Hampshire, Unit L country. Highest deer densities in the state on rugged ground. Firearm pressure is real on opening weekend; weekday sits and the ugly interior still work. Keene is the grocery and processor town.
- Bear Brook — large state park east of Concord. The Bear Brook Refuge inside it is bow-only. Do not show up with a .30-06 and argue with the sign.
- Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge — far north, federal rules on top of state seasons. Check the refuge hunt brochure before you pack a rifle. Silvio Conte units are the same warning.
- Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge — seacoast, special USFWS permit plus a New Hampshire license. This is a Unit M meat hunt, not a White Mountains trip.
- Fish and Game WMAs — about 53,000 acres across roughly 100 tracts. Maps are on huntnh.com. Small, managed, and often closer to a southern tag than any national forest road.
If the Kancamagus trailheads look like a leaf-peeper Saturday, I do not invent a second White Mountain URL. I hunt a nastier gated access on the same forest, or I slide north to Nash Stream and the Headwaters. If a Unit M parking lot is headlights at 5 a.m., I leave and knock on an unposted farm woodlot or sit a smaller WMA on Tuesday. Vermont’s Green Mountains and Maine’s western public land are sibling hunts if you are building a multi-state year. They are not a same-weekend backup from Lincoln.
One tactic that works in both Hampshires
I do not still-hunt pretty oaks all day and hope. I pick one morning sit tight to bedding and one evening sit on a travel edge, and I only sit there if I can explain why a deer would walk it at 8:10 a.m. Fresh tracks and wet-looking droppings beat last year’s rubs. When I time movement I check deer feeding times, then I let the unit change the food: waste apples and acorns in L and M, beech mast and browse cuts on the national forest.
South and seacoast: hunt the nasty edge other people skip — a wet fencerow, a 40-acre woodlot with no parking, a powerline that looks like a tick factory. Firearm opener in shotgun towns is a drive whether you signed up for one or not. I sit the downwind side of the push. White Mountains and Unit A: swamp edges and spruce when pressure is up, hardwood benches when beechnuts are actually on the ground. Snow is a trail camera you do not have to hang. Sharp tracks into cover are a sit; rounded tracks are a walk. The classic North Country play is taking a big track at daylight and staying with it. That is not a slogan. It is miles, wet wool, and the discipline to stop when the track starts to meander into a bed.
Wind is not optional in hill country. Morning thermals dump downhill; evening thermals dump downhill again. I pick setups where a bad swirl dumps into a drainage, not into the bed — same lesson as how to read wind thermals, just steeper. I wasted money on $400 ozone scent control that made zero difference. Cover swallows a bad hit, so I decide max range before I climb. Bow in timber: 30 yards unless the lane is wide and the deer is calm. Pressure: November 11 is a holiday
New Hampshire’s firearms opener is the second Wednesday in November — November 11 in 2026. Every Forest Service pull-off with a view of the Kanc will have a truck in it. That is not a reason to stay home. It is a reason to hunt like public land: hunters cluster near roads, peak on opening weekend, and quit when the walk gets steep. I hunt the opener 400 to 900 yards off easy access, I hunt Thursday and Friday of firearms week if I can take the days, and I hunt late archery in Units L and M when leftover antlerless tags still matter. I do not rattle all day on a pressured Pisgah parking spur.
Southern compact-area towns are a different circus. In much of Hillsborough, Rockingham, and Strafford you are in shotgun, straight-wall, muzzleloader, and bow country — not a .30-06 across a backyard. Read the town list in the digest. Buckshot is illegal in Auburn, Chester, Greenland, Newington, Portsmouth, and Stratham. I still will not take a long poke with a bad backstop.
Where to stay, and why the town matters
Pick a base for the side of the state you are actually hunting. Drive time to the parking area, a grocery that is open after dark, and a processor matters more than a pretty lobby. Cabins and motels both work. Hunters do not all want hotels. I want late checkout on opening morning and a place I can hang wet wool.
Lincoln, NH — west White Mountains, I-93, Pemigewasset country. Grocery, rooms, and a real town if a November storm shuts the Kanc.
North Conway, NH — east side of the forest, more lodging, more processors, more leaf-peeper traffic. Book early for November 11.
Pittsburg, NH — Connecticut Lakes and Unit A. Quiet. Cook in the cabin. Confirm the early closer before you plan a December sit.
Plymouth, NH — central/Lakes access off I-93 without committing to North Conway prices.
Keene, NH — Unit L and Pisgah. Southwest meat hunt, processors that already know the opener is chaos.
Concord, NH — southern WMAs, Bear Brook, headquarters if you need a license reprint, and a processor belt for Units J, K, L, and M.
Processors, ice, and getting a deer out
Call a processor before you shoot, especially for the firearms opener. North Country shops book. Southern shops drown in deer the first weekend. Ask two questions: when can I actually pick up meat, and do you take a quartered deer. If they say “call us after you kill one,” keep calling down the list.
I process my own deer in the garage when I can. On a New Hampshire road trip I still want a backup shop and a cooler plan. Ice is a town problem — buy it the night before. A White Mountains drag through hobblebush can be 900 yards of pain. I keep a cheap plastic sled in the truck when snow is possible. Do I need a draw tag to hunt deer in New Hampshire?
No. A regular hunting or archery license covers one deer OTC. Extra antlerless tags in Units L and M are first-come, first-served near the end of July, not a lottery in 2026. The Special Archery Deer Permit is OTC but must be bought with the archery license.

Are rifles legal in southern New Hampshire?

What about CWD and eating the deer?
