Buy the tag before you book the motel
I have watched people book Forks around a late-archery blacktail sit with a modern-firearm tag in the console, and I have watched people roll into Winthrop with an Oregon license because “it’s the same Cascades.” Washington does not care. A modern-firearm deer tag is not valid in archery-only dates, and an Oregon tag does not hunt Olympic or Okanogan-Wenatchee. The national walkthrough lives at how to get a hunting license. Step 1: Hunter education
If you were born after January 1, 1972, Washington wants proof of hunter education before it will sell you your first hunting license. Traditional classroom, or pass the online test and then show safe firearm handling at a field-skills evaluation. Classes thin out after August. Official path: WDFW hunter education. A one-time, one-license-year deferral is on the books for ages 10 and older. Approved applicants pay a $24 deferral application fee with the license, hunt general seasons only, and cannot apply for special permits. Bowhunter education does not replace hunter ed. If you already certified in another state, bring the card or the number — do not assume WILD can “look you up.”
Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is not a cabin in Leavenworth. Under RCW 77.08.075 and WAC 220-220-050, a resident has kept a permanent place of abode in Washington for at least 90 days immediately before buying, can show intent to stay (a Washington driver’s license or ID issued at least 90 days prior is the usual proof), and is not licensed as a resident somewhere else. A Methow weekend house with an Idaho address is a nonresident. Military orders to a Washington duty station are a different paperwork path — call Licensing.
Cost band, last checked September 8, 2026 against the official fee table: resident deer license in the low $60s; nonresident about $600; youth under 16 about $30; resident senior 70+ in the low $20s. Special-permit applications run about $10 resident and about $152 nonresident per category. A multi-season deer tag, if you draw, is about $192 for everyone. Step 3: What goes in the cart
Think in layers, not “a deer license”:
- Big-game hunting license with deer as a species option — resident, nonresident, senior, youth, or a resident bundle that includes deer. Ages 15 and older have to give a Social Security number.
- One hunting method on the deer transport tag — modern firearm, archery, or muzzleloader. That choice is the season you hunt. Modern-firearm tag holders may use archery, muzzleloader, crossbow, or modern firearm, but only during modern-firearm dates. Archery and muzzleloader tags lock you to those seasons. A general-season deer license is valid statewide for the deer that GMU actually holds. The legal animal (any deer / any buck / 3-point minimum) is still GMU-specific. - Special-permit application if you want quality, buck, antlerless, second-deer, or the age/disability/Master Hunter categories. Buy the hunting license and select the matching transport tag before you can buy the application. Up to four hunt choices per category, two in quality deer. Weighted points reset to zero when you draw that category.
- Multi-season deer application if you want one tag that covers general archery, muzzleloader, and modern firearm until it is filled. That is a separate drawing, not a second deer. 2027 applications: December 1, 2026 through March 31, 2027. If you draw, buy the tag by July 31. Details: multi-season tags.
You cannot refund a season you could have hunted. Transport tags can be exchanged for a different method before archery Sept. 1, muzzleloader Sept. 20, or modern firearm Oct. 10 — and not after you have applied for a special permit (Points Option excepted). Step 4: When it goes on sale — OTC vs draw honesty
General season, first-year nonresident included. In a normal year you can still buy a deer license and a weapon tag the week before the opener. That is the honest first Washington deer trip: a west-side blacktail in the rain, or an eastside 3-point mule on a short rifle window, not a quality special-permit you hoped to draw.
What still draws. Special-permit applications for 2026 ran April 20 through May 20; WDFW extended that window to May 27 because print copies ran late. Results posted by the end of June. Confirm the next year’s window on the special permit application instructions before you spend a nonresident application fee — I am not inventing 2027 dates. A $152 application is not a deer tag. Buy an application and never submit hunt choices and WDFW assigns a Points Option. The pamphlet listed 8,500 multi-season deer tags for 2026; confirm the current cap in publication 02706.
How you carry it, tag it, and report it
Paper or the MyWDFW app. A website screenshot is not the license. Transport tags have to be in physical possession. On the kill, either cut the month and day completely out of the paper tag and attach it, or validate in the app and immediately write the confirmation number and harvest date in ink on weatherproof material and attach that. Then report, even if you never left the driveway. Every 2026 deer tag and every special permit needs a hunter-activity report by midnight January 31, 2027 (later seasons: within 10 days of the close or by March 31, whichever comes first). Miss it and you owe a $10 penalty before you buy next year. Report in the app, at fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov, or by phone — not mail. Official: mandatory hunter reporting. CWD is in northeast Washington. Public land does not need a second deer license — it needs the right tag and the right pass
Olympic, Gifford Pinchot, Okanogan-Wenatchee, Colville, and Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie take the same Washington deer license and the weapon tag you bought. What they do not take is an archery tag on a modern-firearm Saturday, or an Oregon license on a two-track that happens to look like home. There is no live WorldDeer unit page for those forests yet. Youth and first-timers
Everyone who hunts, including kids, needs a valid hunting license and the deer tag. Youth prices apply if you are under 16 on the day you buy. If a youth draws a youth special permit and then turns 16 before buying the license and tag, WDFW charges the adult price. Deferral is the first-timer path if hunter ed is not done: general seasons only, no special-permit applications. Common ways this goes wrong
- Buying a modern-firearm tag, then hunting late archery because the unit is still “open.”
- An Oregon, Idaho, or British Columbia license on Washington dirt because “it’s the same crest.”
- Treating a $152 nonresident special-permit application as the deer tag, or applying before the deer license and matching transport tag are in the account.
- A Vehicle Access Pass on a DNR landing, or no Discover Pass on Capitol Forest.
- Skipping the January 31 hunter report because you did not kill anything, or moving a 100-series carcass west of Region 1 without the CWD rules.
