Updated on September 8, 2026. Confirm every fee, draw deadline, and hunter-education rule on the Idaho Fish and Game licenses page and the 2026 Big Game Seasons and Rules before you buy. This is the field readout, not the proclamation.
| Who this is for | Resident and nonresident hunters buying an Idaho deer tag (mule deer and/or white-tailed deer). |
|---|---|
| Buy it here | GoOutdoorsIdaho, a license vendor, a regional office, or 1-800-554-8685. Online and phone add a processing fee. |
| Hunter education | Required if you were born on or after January 1, 1975, unless you show a prior hunting license or hunter-ed certificate from Idaho or another state. |
| What you actually buy | Hunting license + Access/Depredation fee + a Regular deer tag or a White-tailed deer tag. Archery and muzzleloader hunts need extra permit validations. Controlled hunts are a separate application. |
| OTC vs draw | Residents: general deer tags sell over the counter after the controlled-hunt drawing posts in early July. Nonresidents: starting in 2026, general deer tags are a random draw. Leftovers sell on IDFG’s returned-tag list. No preference points. |
| License year | Hunting licenses expire December 31. Deer seasons in the 2026 brochure run August 2026 into February 2027. Confirm on IDFG. |
| Antlerless / bonus | One deer per legal tag. Extra deer come from extra controlled hunts, depredation hunts, or an unsold nonresident general tag sold as a second tag in early August (not valid in Units 10, 10A, 12, 16A, 17, 19, and 20). |
| WMA / public extras | National forest, BLM, and Fish and Game wildlife management areas take the same Idaho deer tag. Access Yes! is landowner permission, not a second license. |
| Youth / apprentice | Big game minimum age is 10. A Hunting Passport lets a first-timer hunt one calendar year with a licensed adult mentor without finishing hunter ed. |

Buy the tag before you book the motel
I have watched people fly into Boise with a Montana tag in the glove box and a cabin booked in Cascade. Idaho does not care that you “hunt the same mountains.” You need an Idaho hunting license and an Idaho deer tag to hang a deer on Idaho dirt — Payette, Boise, Sawtooth, the Panhandle, Nez Perce-Clearwater, Salmon-Challis, Caribou-Targhee, BLM, and the wildlife management areas. A Washington or Wyoming license does not convert at the state line.
The national walkthrough lives at how to get a hunting license. This page is only Idaho’s cart.
Step 1: Hunter education
If you were born on or after January 1, 1975, Idaho wants hunter-education certification before it will sell you a hunting license. Proof of a previously held hunting license or a hunter-ed certificate from Idaho or another state is the usual exemption. Carry the card. Load it onto your GoOutdoorsIdaho profile before a draw window. Idaho-specific online courses exist and do not require a field day. Anyone 9 and older can take the course. Archery-only and muzzleloader-only seasons need the matching permit validation — extra line items, not a free checkbox.
Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is not a cabin on the South Fork. It is domicile for at least six months immediately before you buy. A valid Idaho driver’s license is the usual proof. Owning property or paying taxes is not a qualification. A Utah address with a Stanley camp is a nonresident. Active-duty military permanently stationed in Idaho for 30 days, plus spouse and kids under 18 in the household, can buy resident licenses while that assignment continues. Lifetime certificates, as of July 1, 2026, need five years of Idaho residency.
Cost band, not a fee table: a resident adult hunting license plus Access/Depredation plus a deer tag is still in the tens of dollars (Price Lock is lower if you have kept an annual license). A nonresident adult hunting license plus Access/Depredation plus a deer tag is in the hundreds. Confirm the current numbers on the resident fee sheet and the nonresident fee sheet the week you buy. I am not pasting a number that will be wrong in October.
Step 3: What goes in the cart
Think in layers, not “a deer license”:
- Access/Depredation fee — paid on the first annual hunting, fishing, or trapping license of the year.
- Hunting license — required to hunt anything. The resident Sportsman’s Package bundles a combination license with deer, elk, and several other tags plus archery and muzzleloader validations.
- Regular deer tag or White-tailed deer tag — this is the kill tag. A Regular tag is valid for mule deer or white-tailed deer in the Regular-tag seasons. A White-tailed tag is white-tailed deer only. That is how a Panhandle hunter runs a long November rut without burning a Regular tag on a Unit 8 doe.
- Archery or muzzleloader permit if you are hunting an archery-only or muzzleloader-only season.
- Controlled-hunt application if you want a limited hunt. You already need a hunting license to apply. The application fee is not a deer tag. If you draw, you still buy the physical tag by the claim deadline.
Step 4: When it goes on sale — OTC vs draw honesty
Residents. You can buy deer receipts starting December 1 and redeem them after the controlled-hunt drawing posts. General resident deer tags go on sale in early July. First application period for deer in 2026 was May 1 through June 5. Second period was August 5–15. Leftovers from the second drawing went on sale August 25. If you drew a limited antlered-only deer hunt in the first period, you sit out the next year’s first-period antlered-only deer applications.
Nonresidents. 2026 is the first year general season deer tags are issued by random draw, not over the counter in July. The 2026 drawing finished March 20. After that, remaining general tags are returned-tag sales. There is no preference-point system. You need a hunting license valid for big game to apply, and that license fee is not refunded if you do not draw. Confirm the next year’s windows on the nonresident deer and elk tag page. Junior-mentored nonresidents do not need the draw for Regular or White-tailed tags.
If leftover nonresident general tags remain, IDFG has been putting them on sale as second tags in early August. Controlled-hunt tags cannot be used as second tags. Second deer tags cannot be used in Units 10, 10A, 12, 16A, 17, 19, or 20.
How you carry it, tag it, and report it
The Go Outdoors Idaho app will show your license. It will not stand in for the deer tag. A physical tag must be in your possession while hunting, even after you harvest. Tags bought online or by phone are mailed. A confirmation email is not a tag.
Immediately after the kill, notch the month and day — cut the triangles out cleanly — and attach the tag to the animal. Tearing, slicing, or punching is not legal. The validated tag stays attached to the whole or quartered carcass. In mule-only or white-tailed-only seasons, if the head comes off, the fully haired tail stays naturally attached.
Then report. Every deer tag you buy needs a mandatory hunter report within 10 days of harvest, or within 10 days after the season closes if you did not hunt or did not kill. App, GoOutdoorsIdaho.com, or 1-877-268-9365. Two tags means two reports.
CWD will ruin the drive home. As of March 2026, management zones cover Units 14 and 18 and a portion of Unit 1 in Boundary County east of the Selkirk crest. Do not haul a whole deer, elk, or moose carcass out of those zones. Mandatory testing for mule deer and white-tailed deer applies in Units 14, 18, 23, 63A, 64, 69, and that same portion of Unit 1 — lymph nodes or the head, within 10 days. Current list: idfg.idaho.gov/cwd. Symptoms: CWD in deer.
Public land does not need a second license
Payette, Boise, Sawtooth, Idaho Panhandle, Nez Perce-Clearwater, Salmon-Challis, and Caribou-Targhee take the same Idaho deer tag as a Fish and Game WMA. What they do not take is the wrong tag type, or a second tag in a unit that bans second tags. Access Yes! is landowner permission, not a second license. Written permission is the trespass law.
Baiting deer is illegal. Bait means food, salt, or natural scent placed to attract big game; synthetic liquid scent for deer is the stated exception. Dogs are not legal for big game except bear and lion; one leashed blood-trailing dog is allowed within 72 hours of the hit. Hunter orange is not required for deer. Sunday hunting is legal. Those field rules live on the Idaho hunting guide.
Youth and first-timers
Only properly licensed youth 10 or older may hunt big game. A 9-year-old can buy a license to apply for a controlled hunt but must be 10 on the hunt. The Hunting Passport is how a first-timer — kid or adult, resident or nonresident — tries one calendar year without hunter ed. You must never have held a hunting license in any state. Minimum age 8; still 10 to hunt deer. One passport per lifetime, except an 8-year-old can buy another each year until turning 10. You still buy general season tags. You cannot apply for a controlled hunt. The mentor is 18 or older, holds a valid Idaho hunting license, and stays close enough to talk without shouting. Two mentees max.
Common ways this goes wrong
- A White-tailed tag in mule country south of the Salmon, or a Regular tag when the plan was a long Panhandle rut.
- A nonresident assuming 2026 general deer tags are still over the counter in July.
- Driving with a confirmation email because the physical tag is still in the mail.
- Buying resident because “we own property.”
- Moving a Unit 14 or 18 carcass across the zone line, or skipping the hunter report because you did not kill anything.
Where to hunt once the tag is in the truck
Start with the Idaho deer hunting guide for seasons, public land, and which tag matches which ridge. Species: mule deer vs whitetail, mule deer, white-tailed deer. Public dirt: hunting national forest land and the public-land hub. If the 2026 nonresident draw missed you, neighboring trip pages are Montana, Wyoming, and Washington. FAQ
Can a nonresident buy an Idaho general deer tag over the counter in 2026? Not as the first tag. General nonresident deer tags went through a random draw. After that, the remaining path is returned-tag sales. Confirm on the nonresident tag page.
Do I need hunter education? If you were born on or after January 1, 1975, yes, unless you can show a prior hunting license or a hunter-ed certificate. A Hunting Passport is the one-year first-timer path.
Does a Montana or Wyoming license work in Idaho? No.
Do I need a separate license for Payette or Boise National Forest? No. You need a valid Idaho hunting license, the right deer tag, and any archery or muzzleloader permit the hunt requires.
Where do I report a deer? Within 10 days of harvest, or within 10 days after the season ends if you did not hunt or did not kill — app, GoOutdoorsIdaho.com, or 1-877-268-9365. CWD units also need a sample or a head.
