Buy the tag before you book a Lincoln cabin
I have watched people roll into a Kancamagus pull-off with a Maine license and a story about “it’s the same White Mountains.” New Hampshire does not care. Once you are on New Hampshire dirt — including most of White Mountain National Forest — you need a New Hampshire hunting or archery license to hang a deer. Step 1: Hunter education
If you are 16 or older and you have never held a hunting or archery license, New Hampshire wants a certificate first. The Fish and Game hunter education page (digest last updated August 27, 2026) is the rule. Classroom courses run a written exam and a field day; the online path still owes the field day. An approved course from another state usually works — bring the card. Online-only courses are not accepted. Pre-2014 certs need both hunter and bowhunter proof to buy both licenses. Lost it? Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is a New Hampshire driver’s license or a non-driver photo ID from the Division of Motor Vehicles. It is not a Lincoln cabin. If the applicant is under 18, a parent or guardian has to be the resident and show their ID.
Nonresident hunting and archery are sold over the counter in a normal year. Cost band, last checked September 8, 2026 on the official license-prices page: resident hunting and archery sit in the low-thirties; nonresident hunting is the low-hundreds line; nonresident archery is the low-eighties. Habitat fee is a couple of dollars. Open that sheet the week you buy. Driving in: planning an out-of-state deer hunt. Step 3: What goes in the cart
New Hampshire does not sell one object called “a deer license.” Layers, from the 2026 deer hunting regulations:
- Regular hunting license (or combo hunt/fish). One firearms deer tag. Small game is included. The nonresident small-game SKU is not a buck tag.
- Archery license if you hunt with a bow. One either-sex deer on its own tag. Crossbows during archery are legal in listed WMUs and statewide if you are 68 or older.
- Muzzleloader license for the 11 days before firearms. It does not add a kill tag. You fill the firearms tag early. You still need the regular hunting license underneath.
- Special Archery Deer Permit for a second antlered deer, bow only. Buy it with the archery license. You cannot add it later.
- Special Unit L or Unit M antlerless permits for extra does in those southwest and seacoast units. L is one tag; M is two. Caps for 2026: 3,500 Unit L and 4,000 Unit M. First-come near the end of July — not a lottery this year.
Resident landowners and their kids under 16 may hunt their own land in season without a regular hunting license. Archery and muzzleloader still get purchased. That is not a White Mountain pass.
Step 4: When it goes on sale, and the first-time trap
Hunting licenses are a calendar-year product. If you wait until the Friday before November 11 you will still get a firearms deer tag in a normal year. What you will not get is a Unit L or M antlerless permit that sold out in late July.
The trip-wrecker is the first New Hampshire hunting or archery license. Fish and Game will not sell that one on the website or at a Walmart unless you already held a hunting or archery license, or took hunter or bowhunter education in New Hampshire, in the year 2000 or later. How you carry it, tag it, and register it
The signed license has to be on you. Lost licenses reprint free at the original agent or Concord. Tag the deer in the woods before you move it. Hunting with a detached tag is illegal. Mechanics: how to tag a deer. Register within 24 hours — the person who killed it has to be the one who registers it. Online registration is shut down for the first two days of muzzleloader and the first three days of firearms. You may quarter in the field, but the head and hide come out. CWD has not been found in New Hampshire; whole carcasses from CWD-positive states still cannot enter except de-boned meat and the listed exceptions. Symptoms: CWD in deer.
Public land does not need a second license — the state line still matters
Fish and Game WMAs, state forests, Pisgah, Bear Brook (bow-only in the refuge), and White Mountain National Forest take the same New Hampshire deer license. There is no extra “WMA stamp.” What they do not take is a Maine license on Evans Notch, or a Unit L antlerless tag in a Lincoln Woods parking lot. WMA how-to: what is a wildlife management area. Youth and first-timers
There is no minimum age. Hunters under 16 skip the regular hunting or archery license. They still buy Special Archery Deer, Unit L/M, turkey, and bear products. They hunt within sight and hearing of a licensed adult 18 or older. Youth deer weekend in 2026 is October 24–25. Rules: youth hunting in New Hampshire. Common ways this goes wrong
- Buying nonresident small game and thinking it tags a deer.
- A Maine or Vermont license on the New Hampshire side of White Mountain National Forest.
- Trying to check out the first New Hampshire hunting license on huntnh.com or at a Walmart.
- An online-only hunter-ed certificate with no field day, or forgetting the Special Archery Deer Permit until October.
- Treating the muzzleloader license as a second deer, or a Unit L tag on a Unit A track west of Pittsburg.
- Registering online on firearms opener, when the website is dark, or rolling a whole New York carcass home through Concord.
