Buy the tag before you book the motel in Belchertown
I have watched people roll into a Quabbin gate with a New Hampshire license in the console and a Zone 6 antlerless printout on the dash. Massachusetts does not care that you “hunt New England.” You need a Massachusetts hunting license to hang a deer on Massachusetts dirt, including October Mountain, Birch Hill, and the watershed woods around Belchertown.

Step 1: Hunter education
Massachusetts is not a birth-year state the way Michigan is. You are eligible if you have a government-issued Basic Hunter Education certificate from any jurisdiction, or if you held a hunting or sporting license anywhere before January 1, 2007. MassWildlife does not ask you to upload the card. Online you check a box. At a vendor you say it out loud. That affidavit is under penalty of perjury. Never taken the course and never held a pre-2007 license? Stop and take it. MassWildlife’s classes are free; other states’ certificates count. Bowhunters do not need a separate bow course for the archery stamp. Crossbows are a disability permit. There is no adult “apprentice” ticket that skips hunter ed. Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is not a summer cabin in the Berkshires. A resident hunting license is for someone whose legal residence in Massachusetts covers at least six months immediately before you apply. A Connecticut driver’s license with a borrowed Pittsfield address is a nonresident. Buy the wrong class and you have a ticket, not a story.
Nonresidents buy the Non-Resident Big Game Hunting License. That is the deer license; the small-game ticket does not carry the two antlered tags. You still add the same stamps and antlerless permits; the prices are higher. Confirm the current band on the fee sheet the week you buy. Resident hunting sits in the tens of dollars plus a Wildlands stamp. Nonresident big game is a low-hundreds ticket before stamps. I am not pasting MassWildlife’s table. Long guns do not need a Massachusetts gun license to possess or transport; they should travel unloaded and cased, and you may not buy ammunition here. Official: general hunting regulations. Step 3: What goes in the cart
Think in layers, not “a deer license”:
- Hunting or Sporting license (residents) or Non-Resident Big Game — plus two antlered deer tags, valid in every Wildlife Management Zone.
- Wildlands Conservation Stamp on the first resident license of the year, and on every nonresident license.
- Archery stamp for archery deer season. No extra course.
- Primitive Firearms stamp for muzzleloader season, including if you hunt that season with a bow.
- Antlerless Deer Permit for the zone you will stand in. A Zone 11 leftover is not a Zone 2 doe tag. Quabbin shotgun needs Quabbin-specific antlerless permits sold later in the fall, not a Zone 6 ADP.
- Winter Deer Permit only for Zones 13 or 14 (Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket) in the winter season. Free, but add it to the account.
A Sporting license is hunt-plus-freshwater-fishing. If you already bought a fishing license, do not double-pay. Combos do not include the archery stamp, primitive stamp, or an antlerless permit. Step 4: When it goes on sale
Licenses expire December 31. Confirm the year in MassFishHunt before you hunt January 2 on last year’s PDF. The date that actually bites people is July 16: Antlerless Deer Permit applications close. No application fee. Awards open August 1. You can check any time through December 31; waiting does not change the odds. If you are awarded a permit, you still have to buy it.
Surplus ADPs are leftovers after the drawing. In 2026, Zones 10, 11, 13, and 14 were unlimited. Limited leftover (Zones 1, 3, 4S, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 12 that year) went on sale at 9 a.m. on September 16, one permit per zone per day. Zones 2, 4N, and 6 often stay tight. Read the current ADP allocation and odds page. Quabbin DWSP access applications open July 1 and are not instant. Apply before you book the motel.
How you carry it, tag it, and report it
A phone image of the license is legal for hunting. Deer is the exception. If a tag is required — deer, bear, turkey — you must carry a paper copy of the license, permits, and tags. Fill out and attach the paper tag before you move the animal. Report within 48 hours on MassFishHunt or at a check station, then write the confirmation number on the tag. Every deer taken in the first week of shotgun season goes to a physical check station — that is not optional because you “already reported online.” Use the check station map before you leave the woods.
CWD has not been found in Massachusetts. Whole carcasses and high-risk parts from outside New England (Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont) stay out. If you also hunt New York in the same week, de-bone before you come home. Symptoms: CWD in deer. Official: MassWildlife CWD.
Public land does not need a second license — Quabbin and Blue Hills need extra paper
A MassWildlife WMA, October Mountain, and most state forests take the hunting license you already bought. Georgia-style WMA licenses are not a Massachusetts product. What they do not take is an antlerless permit written for a different zone, or a Sunday hunt. Hunting is closed on Sundays statewide. Baiting is illegal. Dogs may not hunt deer. Wear 500 square inches of blaze orange on chest, back, and head during youth, shotgun, primitive, winter, and early deer seasons. Quabbin, Ware River, Wachusett, and Sudbury watersheds need a free DCR DWSP access permit plus a current Massachusetts hunting license. Up to two Quabbin antlerless permits go on sale on MassFishHunt in mid-November — confirm the date on the DWSP access permits page. A leftover Zone 6 ADP is not a Quabbin tag. Blue Hills is a separate archery lottery in Zones 10 and 11; apply on the Blue Hills Deer Management Program page. Selected hunters need a hunting license, an archery stamp, and Zone 10/11 antlerless permits — Blue Hills-specific ADPs were discontinued. Youth and first-timers
Ages 12–14 do not buy a hunting license or stamps. They hunt with a licensed adult 18 or older: one minor per adult, one firearm or bow, one bag limit. Ages 15–17 buy the Minor Hunting license (resident) or Non-Resident Big Game, with parent consent, plus season stamps. The Youth Deer Hunt Permit is free for ages 12–17 in the youth’s MassFishHunt account, good on the youth hunt and any open deer season after. Common ways this goes wrong
- Buying only the hunting license and skipping the archery or primitive stamp for the season you actually hunt.
- A New Hampshire, Connecticut, or Vermont license on Massachusetts dirt because “it’s the same woods.”
- A Zone 11 antlerless permit in a western WMA parking lot, or a Zone 6 ADP at a Quabbin gate.
- Checking the hunter-ed box when you never took a course and never held a pre-2007 license.
- Phone-only license on a deer hunt with no paper tags in the pack.
- Skipping the physical check station the first week of shotgun season, or hunting Sunday.
