Buy the tag before you point the truck at Dahlonega
I have watched people roll into a north Georgia WMA lot with an Alabama license in the console and a story about “it’s the same ridge.” Georgia does not care. You need Georgia hunting privileges and a Georgia Big Game license — or a Sportsman’s license that already includes both — plus the free Harvest Record.

Step 1: Hunter education
If you were born on or after January 1, 1961, Georgia wants a hunter-education certificate before it will sell you a season hunting license. Online courses exist; classroom courses are still free for residents. Certificates from any U.S. state wildlife agency or Canadian province count — bring the number. Ages 16–25 must show the card at purchase and carry it hunting. Age 26 and older (still born 1961 or later) must have passed the course but do not have to flash the card at the register. Under 16, a licensed adult has to be in a position to take the gun unless you are 12–15 and already certified. Apprentice, short-term, and own-land (or parent/guardian land in the same household) skip hunter ed. Current wording: WRD hunter education.
Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is not a cabin in Blue Ridge and a Florida driver’s license. WRD’s test is domicile in Georgia for at least three consecutive months, shown with a Georgia driver’s license or official Georgia ID. You get one domicile. Full-time military stationed in Georgia (and dependents) and full-time students at a Georgia college can buy a regular resident license — not lifetime, honorary, or the discounted flavors. Confirm on the resident guide. Nonresident landowners still buy nonresident licenses. The own-land exemption is for Georgia-resident landowners and their immediate household family.
Nonresident deer licenses are sold over the counter in a normal year. Confirm the current hunting-plus-big-game band on WRD’s licenses, permits & passes table the week you purchase. I am not pasting a fee sheet that will be wrong next July.
Step 3: What goes in the cart
Think in layers, not “a deer license”:
- Hunting license — basic hunting privileges. Age 16+ unless you are a resident hunting own/family land.
- Big Game license — required on top of hunting for deer, turkey, or bear. Sportsman’s, Honorary, and Lifetime Sportsman’s already include it. Under 16 is exempt. Resident landowners on their own land are exempt.
- Harvest Record — free, required at every age, even kids and lifetime holders. Valid March through February. Get a new one each March.
- Sportsman’s license instead of stacking hunting + big game + fishing, if that is the cheaper box for how you actually spend the year.
A combo hunting and fishing license is hunting plus fishing. It is not big game. Cost band, not a scraped table: resident hunting plus big game sits in the tens of dollars, or a Sportsman’s license if you also fish. Step 4: When it goes on sale
Georgia does not have a single “deer license goes on sale in March” holiday. Annual licenses are 365 days from purchase. The Harvest Record is available on or after March 1 for the coming season. Deer quota hunts on WMAs and some state parks took applications June 1 through Sept. 1, 2026 (11:59 p.m. Eastern). Odds live on WRD’s quota hunt page. A drawn slot is not transferable. How you carry it, tag it, and report it
Electronic copies are legal. I still screenshot the licenses and keep a paper Harvest Record where I can write with gloves on. On most ground, enter the date and county on the Harvest Record before you move the deer. Some WMA and refuge hunts require a check station instead — follow that hunt’s listing. CWD is not a license, but it will ruin the drive home. First detection in Georgia was January 2025. As of April 2026 the CWD Management Area is Atkinson, Berrien, Lanier, and Lowndes. Follow carcass rules on georgiawildlife.com/cwd. Symptoms: CWD in deer.
Public land does not need a second hunting license — it needs the right hunt
There used to be a separate WMA license. That is not how the current cart works. A valid Georgia hunting or fishing license already covers access on signed WRD WMAs and PFAs. If you are 16 or older and you walk on without hunting or fishing privileges, you need a Lands Pass instead. Lands Pass is access, not a deer tag. See WRD land access.
What public land still adds: sign in for deer hunts, and — on quota weekends — actually be drawn. Berry College’s Q1000 firearms weekends are a circus. Bonus-hunt deer, when a WMA offers them, go through that area’s check station and do not eat a line on your statewide Harvest Record. Youth and first-timers
Resident hunters under 16 need the Harvest Record for deer — not the hunting license or Big Game. Direct supervision means the licensed adult can take the gun immediately. Ages 12–15 who have finished hunter ed may hunt unsupervised; some WMAs still tighten that. Nonresident youth through 15 still need a nonresident hunting license to hunt deer, but not Big Game, plus the Harvest Record. Apprentice is the short-term adult path if you have not finished hunter ed; you still add Big Game and the Harvest Record. WRD does not require a mentor.
Common ways this goes wrong
- Buying only the hunting license — or a combo hunt/fish — and skipping Big Game.
- An Alabama or South Carolina license on Georgia dirt.
- No Harvest Record because “I’m a kid” or “I have Lifetime.”
- A quota WMA with a legal Sportsman’s license and no draw, or a WMA walk at 16+ with neither a hunting/fishing license nor a Lands Pass.
- Moving a deer before the date and county are on the Harvest Record, or buying a season license with no hunter-ed number if you were born 1961 or later.
Where to hunt once the tag is in the truck

Can a nonresident buy a Georgia deer license over the counter? Yes, in a normal year. Hunting plus Big Game, or Sportsman’s, plus the free Harvest Record. Quota WMA hunts are the part that may not be sitting on the shelf. Confirm on GoOutdoorsGeorgia.com.
Do I need hunter education? If you were born on or after January 1, 1961, yes, before a season hunting license — unless you are on an apprentice/short-term license, or hunting own/parent land under the exemption.
