The Rampur Greyhound is associated with the former princely state of Rampur in northern India, where tradition credits local rulers of the eighteenth or nineteenth century with developing the breed, reportedly by blending native sighthounds of Afghan type with imported English Greyhounds. The result was a courser tough enough for jackal and capable against larger game, prized by aristocrats for sport. When princely patronage ended and coursing declined after Indian independence, the breed's numbers fell steeply, and it survives today in modest numbers with dedicated fanciers. It has no recognition from major international kennel clubs, and its early history rests largely on oral tradition, so accounts of its origins should be read as heritage rather than settled record.
