The Rajapalayam takes its name from the town of Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu, where it is believed to have been bred for centuries by local families as a boar hunter and guardian. The breed's numbers declined sharply in the twentieth century as hunting waned, and Indian institutions and enthusiasts have since promoted preservation efforts, including commemorative postage stamps honoring native breeds.
