The story behind the Phu Quoc Ridgeback
The dog is named for Phu Quoc, an island off Vietnam's southwestern coast, where a distinctive ridged hunting dog has been described by visitors and local accounts since at least the nineteenth century. Relative isolation allowed a consistent type to persist, and the dogs were used by island households to hunt small game and to guard homes, working largely on their own initiative. The relationship to other ridged breeds elsewhere in Asia and Africa is unresolved, and claims of direct connection should be treated cautiously. Vietnamese fanciers have worked in recent decades to document the type, promote it as a national breed and encourage organised breeding, and the dogs are exhibited at Vietnamese shows. International recognition is limited, and populations abroad are very small. Numbers on the island itself have been affected by crossbreeding, making preservation efforts an ongoing concern.
