The story behind the Neapolitan Mastiff
The Neapolitan Mastiff descends from the heavy guarding mastiffs of the ancient Mediterranean world, and dogs of this general type were kept in southern Italy for centuries as farm and property guardians, working quietly and locally without formal recognition. The modern breed was identified and standardised in the middle of the twentieth century, when Italian enthusiasts, notably the writer Piero Scanziani, gathered dogs from the countryside around Naples and established a standard, giving the breed its name and its route into the show world. Later breeding emphasised bulk, loose skin and wrinkle, which has become a subject of health debate. The FCI recognised the breed, and the AKC admitted it more recently. It remains uncommon and is kept mainly as a guardian and companion.
