The story behind the Hamiltonstovare

Swedish hunting has long favoured hounds that work singly rather than in packs, and during the later nineteenth century Count Adolf Patrick Hamilton, a founding figure of the Swedish Kennel Club, developed a hound suited to that style. He drew on German hounds, with Holsteiner, Hanoverian Haidbracke and Kurland stock among those cited, combined with English foxhound blood for speed and stamina, aiming at a dog that could work cold northern terrain independently. The breed was shown in Sweden before the end of that century, initially known simply as the Swedish Hound, and later renamed after its creator. It became one of the most numerous breeds in Sweden and is still used widely there for hunting hare and fox. Outside Scandinavia it remains uncommon, with small numbers in Britain and North America.

Feeding a Hamiltonstovare

Match intake to the season, since a hound that works through a Nordic autumn burns considerably more than one resting in summer. A complete diet for active medium dogs, given in two servings away from hard running, keeps condition trim without leaving the dog hungry.

Watch for: Nothing intolerance-related is characteristic of the breed. Digestive upsets in hunting hounds usually follow scavenged carrion or an abrupt switch of food rather than any single ingredient. Should signs continue, let a veterinarian investigate and supervise whatever dietary change is tried.
