The story behind the Croatian Sheepdog
The Croatian Sheepdog is native to the Slavonia region of eastern Croatia, especially the plains around Djakovo, where it drove cattle, pigs, and sheep and guarded herds on the move. Records held by the church diocese at Djakovo are cited by breed historians as describing dogs of this appearance well before modern breeding, though the population developed as a farm landrace rather than through any planned programme. Systematic work to describe and standardise the type is credited to a Croatian veterinarian working from the 1930s onward, and international recognition by the FCI followed in later decades. Numbers remain modest overall: the dog is reasonably common in parts of Croatia as both a stock worker and a sport dog, and scarce beyond the region.

Feeding a Croatian Sheepdog
A small, hard-driving worker with high energy output relative to size, so calorie-dense food and portions matched to the day's work suit it best. Increase the amount for dogs doing genuine stock work or sport, and keep adults lean and muscular rather than covered.
