The story behind the Chippiparai
The Chippiparai comes from the plains of southern Tamil Nadu, where it has long been associated with towns in the Madurai, Tirunelveli, and Virudhunagar regions. Local tradition holds that these hounds were kept by rural communities and once patronized by regional rulers, used to course hare and other small game and to guard homesteads. Precise origins are undocumented, as the breed developed as a landrace shaped by climate and function rather than written pedigrees. Numbers declined through the twentieth century as coursing faded, but Indian enthusiasts and the Kennel Club of India have promoted native breeds in recent years, and Indian postage stamps have honored the Chippiparai. It remains rare and is essentially unknown outside South Asia.

Feeding a Chippiparai
Sighthounds carry little body fat, so this South Indian courser wants a digestible, moderately fat-rich diet split into two servings and offered well away from sprint sessions. A faint rib outline is normal; feeding toward plumpness helps nothing.
Watch for: Little formal documentation exists for the breed. Sighthound keepers commonly describe light, easily upset digestion and better results from smaller, more frequent servings. Report ongoing diarrhoea or skin irritation to a vet before adjusting ingredients.
