The story behind the Catalan Sheepdog
The Catalan Sheepdog belongs to the Catalan Pyrenees and surrounding uplands of northeastern Spain, where shepherds used medium-sized shaggy dogs to gather and drive flocks over rough ground and along traditional drove roads. Like most European herding types it emerged from regional farm stock rather than from a planned programme. Spanish enthusiasts began recording the dogs in the early twentieth century, a standard was drawn up in the decades that followed, and FCI recognition placed the breed among sheepdogs. Numbers fell sharply mid-century as traditional pastoral farming contracted, and recovery efforts from roughly the 1970s onward rebuilt the population from surviving working animals. Today it is reasonably secure in Catalonia, where it also appears in agility and obedience competition, but remains uncommon beyond Spain.

Feeding a Catalan Sheepdog
An active medium-framed herder that does well on food with enough fat and protein to support daily work, adjusted upward for dogs in real employment. Judge portions by body condition felt through that heavy coat rather than assessed by eye, and offer two meals daily.
Watch for: There is no recognised ingredient sensitivity tied to this breed. Coated herding dogs sometimes present skin irritation their owners suspect is dietary when matting, damp, or environmental allergens are the actual cause. Rule those out with a veterinarian before altering the food.
