Buy the Outdoors Card before you book the motel
I have watched a Michigan truck roll off the Sault Ste. Marie bridge with a DNR printout on the dash. The cedar looks the same. The ticket does not. You need an Ontario deer licence to hang a deer on Ontario dirt — Crown land west of Thunder Bay or a farm woodlot on Manitoulin. A Michigan deer license does not travel north with you.

Step 1: Hunter education, then accreditation on file
Passing a course is not enough. Ontario will not sell a hunting product until hunter accreditation is already in the Fish and Wildlife Licensing Service. Residents 12 and older take the Ontario Hunter Education Program and walk the certificate into a participating ServiceOntario. Online filing is promised for the new licensing system in early 2027, not this fall. Course notes: hunter education.
Non-residents create an account, buy the Outdoors Card first, then file hunter ed or a post-1968 resident hunting licence from a recognized jurisdiction. Email [email protected] (up to 15 business days) to buy online before you drive, or walk into an issuer and buy that day. Official list: non-resident hunting licence. Michigan is on that list with a footnote — some card types are not accepted. A gun hunt is extra paper: residents carry a Possession and Acquisition Licence; non-residents declare firearms with CBSA.
Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is not “I have a camp on Lake of the Woods.” Ontario wants both: your primary residence in the province, and at least six consecutive months living there in the 12 months immediately before you apply. A Minnesota address with a Rainy River cabin is a non-resident.
Cost band, last checked September 8, 2026 on the ministry fee tables (Canadian dollars, plus 13% HST unless noted): Outdoors Card under $10 for three years; resident deer licence and tag in the mid-$40s; farmer’s deer in the mid-$20s; non-resident deer around $240; export permit $35 with no HST. Step 3: What goes in the cart
Think in layers, not “a deer license”:
- Outdoors Card — plastic, three calendar years. The licence summary is temporary proof while the card is in the mail.
- Deer licence and paper tag — one antlered deer in any WMU with an open season. Yellow sticky seals are gone. Print the tag once. It is not listed on your licence summary; you still carry the paper.
- Antlerless validation — residents apply to the antlerless deer draw. Non-residents do not. Party hunting on someone else’s valid antlerless tag is the other path, under the 5-kilometre and same-WMU rules.
- Controlled deer hunt validation — southern gun weeks in WMUs 53B, 69A, 70, and 76–94. Resident draw, groups up to four. A CDH validation is not a deer tag. Farmers and landowners with 20 hectares in a CDH unit can attest instead of winning the draw.
- Additional deer tag — listed hunt codes only, after the deer licence is in the cart. 2026 offered 7,055 tags, first-come from 8:30 a.m. Eastern July 8. Northern leftovers exist; the ministry’s own table warns northern deer numbers are generally low.
A farmer’s deer licence is cheaper and smaller: valid only in the geographic area on the tag. Hunt outside that county or district and you needed the regular deer licence.
Step 4: When it goes on sale
The Outdoors Card and the antlered deer licence sell through the season in a normal year. The clocks that wreck a trip are on apply to hunt big game: antlerless draw March 1–June 30, 2026 (results August 1); controlled deer hunt draw July 1–31 (results September 1); additional tags first-come from July 8. Wait until the Friday before November 2 and you will still get an antlered licence. You will not get into a draw you skipped.
How you carry it, tag it, and report it
Carry the Outdoors Card, the licence summary (paper or phone), and the printed paper tag. The tag cannot live on a phone. Notch the day, month, and time immediately after the kill, at the kill site, before you move the deer. Attach it to an antler or an ear if you leave the animal. Mechanics: how to tag a deer. Buy a deer tag, you file a hunter report even if you never left the truck. 2026 deer reports are due January 14, 2027. Miss it and a $25 surcharge lands on the next deer product; consecutive misses after July 1, 2026 can jump to $50. Public land does not need a second licence — it needs an open WMU
Crown land takes the same Ontario deer licence. What it does not take is a Michigan tag, a farmer’s licence written for a different county, or an additional tag coded to a different hunt. Look up the unit on the WMU map the night you buy. Crown Game Preserves, including Chapleau, are closed. What a non-resident can actually get this season
A first-year non-resident can buy an Outdoors Card and an antlered deer licence over the counter after accreditation is on file. The map is the other half. A lot of far-north units list “None” for non-resident deer season. Most southern controlled-hunt farmland (WMU 76–94) is resident-only. Manitoulin, Bruce-area units 82A/B, 83A and 84, and a wide band of central and eastern units do list non-resident dates. You cannot enter the antlerless or controlled-hunt draws. Youth and first-timers
The apprentice program is Ontario residents 12 to 14 who have already passed hunter ed, hunting under a licensed mentor 18 or older. They share a firearm and, unless they bought their own tag, they share a bag. They cannot apply to big-game draws. Residents hunt on their own at 16, or 15 with written parental consent. Non-residents start at 16. There is no adult apprentice that skips hunter ed. Field side: deer hunting for beginners.
Common ways this goes wrong
- A Michigan, Minnesota, or New York license on Ontario dirt because “it’s the same woods.”
- Buying the deer licence before hunter accreditation is on file.
- A southern gun week without a controlled-hunt validation, or a far-north trip in a unit with no non-resident season.
- A farmer’s deer licence two counties over, or a phone screenshot treated as the paper tag.
- Skipping the hunter report because you did not kill a deer, or Rainy River without the licensed guide.
