I have watched a truck from Superior, Wisconsin roll into a Minnesota WMA with a Go Wild printout on the dash. The woods look the same across the St. Louis River. The ticket does not. You need a Minnesota deer license to hang a deer on Minnesota dirt, including Superior, Chippewa, and every WMA from Houston County to the Boundary Waters.

Step 1: Hunter education
If you were born after December 31, 1979 and you are over 12, Minnesota will not sell you a firearms hunting license without a Hunter Education and Firearms Safety certificate, an equivalent from another state, or an apprentice validation. Ages 16 and older can finish the approved online course with a virtual field day; younger hunters do a hybrid or a classroom course of at least 12 hours. Bring the card. If you are archery-only with no certificate, confirm on that DNR page. Under that 1979 year you are generally exempt from hunter ed. You are not exempt from buying the license.
Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is not “I have a cabin near Ely.” DNR wants legal residence in Minnesota for at least 60 days before you buy, and anyone 21 or older needs a current Minnesota driver’s license or public safety ID. That split is on the online sales page. A Wisconsin address with a Gunflint Trail camp is a nonresident.
Nonresident deer licenses are sold over the counter. That is the whole reason a lot of us hunt Minnesota instead of drawing Iowa. Cost bands, last checked September 7, 2026 on the DNR hunting licenses table: resident adult deer licenses sit in the mid-$30s; nonresident adult deer licenses sit in the $180s, plus the issuing fee. Confirm the current line items the week you buy.
Step 3: What goes in the cart
Think in layers, not “a Minnesota deer license”:
- The deer license for the weapon. No more than one firearms, one muzzleloader, and one archery deer license per calendar year. Minnesota does not make you buy a separate base or habitat license just to hold a deer tag.
- Declare a deer permit area. You are not locked to that number. You can hunt anywhere the method on the license is legal. DNR uses the declaration for harvest stats and the antlerless lottery. Look it up on the interactive DPA map the night you buy.
- Antlerless lottery, if you need a doe in a lottery DPA. Firearms and muzzleloader hunters there are bucks-only unless they draw. Archery, youth under 18, veterans-home residents, and hunters 84 or older can take either-sex without the drawing. Bonus permits are not valid in lottery, bucks-only, or either-sex areas.
- Bonus, early-antlerless, and disease-management permits only where the DPA allows extra antlerless. Landowner extras: DNR landowner licenses.
The old “A” and “B” firearms licenses are gone. One statewide firearms license covers the November opener and the late southeast season.
Step 4: When it goes on sale
All deer licenses — archery, firearms, muzzleloader, and bonus — go on sale Saturday, August 1 and stay on sale through the season. After a season is open, a license bought before legal shooting hours is valid that day; bought after shooting hours start, it is valid the next day.
The antlerless lottery deadline is the first Thursday after Labor Day. For 2026 that is Thursday, September 10, on the DNR deer FAQ. Buy the firearms or muzzleloader license, declare a lottery DPA by that date, and you are entered. Winners get a postcard; you still need a valid license for the season you hunt. Special hunts now use a separate preference-point pool; in 2026 you can apply for both. Surplus leftovers, when listed, go first-come at 5 p.m. on October 1. Create the LoginMN account in August. How you carry it, validate it, and register it
Buy on the DNR licensing site, in the MN DNR Licensing app, or at an agent. Carry paper, a PDF, or the app. I still screenshot it. Cell service dies in spruce.
Site validation replaced physical carcass tags. Validate at the kill site in the app, on the paper form in the regulations booklet, or in ELS before you move the deer. Then register within 48 hours and before it is processed. Antlers stay attached until it is registered. Online and the app will not open until site validation is done. Public land does not need a second license
WMAs, state forest, Chippewa, and Superior take the same Minnesota deer license. There is no extra public-land stamp. What they do not take is a bonus permit in a lottery or bucks-only DPA. Some state parks and Camp Ripley archery are special hunts; that application is not a deer license. Baiting is illegal statewide. Youth and first-timers
Youth 10 to 12 need a free deer license. Youth 13 to 17 buy the youth-price license. Youth 12 and older need a firearms safety certificate or an apprentice validation to hunt with a firearm. The statewide youth firearms season is October 15–18, 2026; an unused youth firearms license still works in November. Youth under 18 may take either-sex in lottery DPAs without applying and cannot shoot a doe in a bucks-only DPA. Details: DNR youth deer season. Common ways this goes wrong
- A Wisconsin or Michigan license on Minnesota dirt because “it’s the same woods.”
- Planning a freezer doe in a lottery DPA and missing the September lottery Thursday.
- A bonus permit in a lottery, bucks-only, or either-sex area. It will not tag that deer.
- Waiting for a phone sale, looking for a paper carcass tag, or buying a second “B” firearms license. The shotgun zone is gone; some counties passed their own ordinances.
