Buy the tag before you book the cabin
I have watched people drive to Bath with a Pennsylvania license and a story about “it’s the same ridge.” New York does not care. Step 1: Hunter education
DEC will not sell a first hunting license until hunter education is on the DECALS profile. That is not Michigan’s 1960 birth-year cutoff. In-person classes are free and fill in late summer. Listings: DEC hunter education. Online hunter ed and bowhunter ed are for New York residents 11 and older. Nonresidents take an in-person class here or bring an IHEA-USA certificate from home. Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is not “I have a camp in Hamilton County.” DEC’s general sporting license information is blunt: an annual resident license requires more than 30 days of permanent New York residency immediately before you buy. Land ownership does not make you a resident. A Pennsylvania driver’s license with an Adirondack camp is a nonresident cart. Lifetime licenses need a full year and are residents-only. Active-duty military stationed here and full-time college students living here during the school year can qualify with proof. Step 3: What goes in the cart
New York does not sell “a deer license.” It sells a hunting license, then privileges, then WMU antlerless paper. Read the current privileges needed table the week you buy.
- Annual hunting license (junior hunting if you are 12–15). Required before any privilege. Includes big game and small game, plus an Antlered Deer Tag. Ages 14 and older also get a Regular Season Bear Tag.
- Bowhunting privilege for the special bow seasons, including crossbow. You get a Bow/Muzz Antlerless Deer Tag. Bowhunter education on file.
- Muzzleloading privilege for the special muzzleloader seasons. Another Bow/Muzz Antlerless Deer Tag. Buy both and either tag can be used in either of those seasons with the legal implement.
- Deer Management Permit for a doe in a named WMU. Limited-quota units close October 1. Unlimited/bonus units stay open all season.
Regular-season firearm deer needs the hunting license. Regular-season bow or crossbow, for hunters 14 and older, can run on the hunting license plus bowhunter education. Crossbow during a bow season still needs the privilege. Confirm that split on the privileges page; it changed when the 2025 crossbow law landed.
Cost band, last checked September 8, 2026 on DEC’s hunting licenses page: resident adult hunting in the low-twenties; nonresident adult the hundred-dollar line; bow and muzzle privileges a tens-of-dollars line each. Junior hunting is a single-digit line for both residencies. DEC lists a non-refundable DMP application fee; youth and some older lifetime holders are exempt.
Step 4: When it goes on sale
The license year is September 1 through August 31. DEC put 2026–27 hunting licenses and DMPs on sale August 3, 2026 — see the August sale announcement. Wait until the Friday before Southern Zone opener and you will still get a hunting license in a normal year. The clock that matters is the limited DMP deadline: October 1 for quota units. Leftovers, if any, may show up at agents on or around November 1. DEC’s antlerless deer hunting page is the source: up to four DMPs (two limited, two unlimited/bonus), unlimited transfers, and statewide Earn-a-2nd-Buck. Harvest and report an antlerless deer on a DMP, a Bow/Muzz Antlerless tag, or a DMAP tag, and a second Antlered Deer Tag lands in DECALS. Keep proof of that first antlerless deer for seven days. How you carry it, tag it, and report it
Backtags are gone. Carry the license on paper or in HuntFishNY. Sign in while you still have service. E-tag users report immediately when the deer is down; no paper tag is required while the carcass stays in your possession. Leave it at camp or a processor and make a tag with your name, DEC ID, and the eight-digit confirmation number. Public land does not need a second statewide license — two corners do
A Catskill or Adirondack Forest Preserve tract, a DEC WMA, a state forest, and Finger Lakes National Forest take the same New York hunting license. Youth and first-timers
Nobody under 12 buys a hunting license. Ages 12–15 buy a junior hunting license, finish hunter education, and hunt with a licensed adult under the current junior big game rules. 12- and 13-year-olds hunt deer with a firearm or crossbow only in opt-in counties (through December 31, 2028). Mentors for firearm/crossbow deer are 21 or older with three years of big-game experience, stay at ground level, and keep physical control. If the mentor is not a parent, carry the permission form. During the Columbus Day weekend youth hunt, the adult does not carry a gun or a bow. No adult apprentice skips hunter ed. Field side: deer hunting for beginners.
Common ways this goes wrong
- A Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or Vermont license because “it’s the same woods.”
- Bow season with a firearms hunter-ed card and no bowhunting privilege.
- A DMP printed for 8R hanging on a Northern Zone two-track.
- Paper-tag reporting on the old seven-day clock, or a second buck before the Earn-a-2nd-Buck paper tag is in the pocket.
- A whole out-of-state carcass in the bed at the Thruway booth, or Suffolk DEC land with no access permit.
Where to hunt once the tag is in the truck

Michigan’s deer license is the other OTC cart. Iowa’s deer license is the draw you do not have to fight here. Massachusetts and Vermont are honest border hunts, not a same-license cheat.
