Do not book Silver City until the hunt code is in the cart
I have watched people price rooms around a Gila rifle split with a Midwest plan: “I’ll buy the tag when I get there.” New Mexico does not sell public-land deer that way. You apply in March, you draw a hunt code, you hunt the dates and legal wildlife printed on it — or you hunt private land on a July OTC tag, or you sit leftover and hope. Step 1: Hunter education
Hunter ed here is an age-and-place rule, not a 1960 birth-year cutoff like Michigan. Before you buy a Game-Hunting License, anyone 17 or younger needs a hunter-education number from New Mexico or another state, or a Mentored-Youth number. That is on the NMDOW hunter education page. Other-state cards are no longer valid under age 9. White Sands Missile Range and Fort Bliss require hunter ed at every age. Online courses are open to hunters 9 and older. Bowhunter education does not certify you to buy a hunting license. Reprint your CIN card so the hunter-ed number prints under your name, and carry that.
Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is 90 days of domicile immediately before you apply, and you have not claimed residency elsewhere. That is the wording in the 2026–27 booklet, not “I have a cabin near Reserve.” A Texas driver’s license with a Gila camp is a nonresident. Students who have lived here one full semester, and military permanently assigned to a New Mexico installation, are the written exceptions. Buy the wrong class and you have a ticket, not a Coues story.
Step 3: What goes in the cart
Think in layers. This is not a Michigan stack you grab at a gas station in October.
- Create a CIN account at onlinesales.wildlife.state.nm.us or 888-248-6866. Do not open a second account if your name or residency is wrong — call the Information Center.
- Game-Hunting License or Game-Hunting & Fishing License. Nonrefundable. Required before you apply for deer. By itself it is small game.
- HMAV if you are 18 or older. Habitat Stamp if you will hunt Forest Service or BLM — buy it in the draw cart, or before May 15 if you want it printed on the combo tag.
- Deer application — hunt codes from the booklet. You pay the application fee and the full deer license up front. Unsuccessful applicants get the deer fee back, not the game-hunting license, the stamps, or the application fee. The highest fee among your choices is charged; if you draw a cheaper hunt, the difference is refunded.

Step 4: Draw, leftover, and private-land OTC
The 2026–27 deer deadline was March 18, 2026, at 5 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time. Paid applications cannot be edited. Up to four hunters can ride one application, and everyone on it has to be eligible for every hunt code, including last year’s harvest report. New Mexico does not give preference points. It is a random sequence, then first, second, and third choices. A fourth-choice deer hunt is a quadrant dump — NW, NE, SW, or SE — and you keep whatever hunt in that quadrant still has licenses. Quotas are statute: at least 84 percent of draw licenses go to residents, 10 percent to hunters applying with a New Mexico-registered outfitter, 6 percent to nonresidents without an outfitter. 2026 results were listed for April 22. Leftovers: 537 deer licenses went on sale July 8, 2026, residents first 24 hours, then nonresidents July 9 — NMDOW leftover notice. Private-land-only deer is OTC from July 1 and is not valid on public land. Units 2A, 2B, 2C, 4, and 5A still go through the March draw with a landowner authorization.
What a nonresident can actually get this season
A first-year nonresident does not walk into a Silver City vendor in October and buy a Gila rifle tag. You apply in March, sit leftover after the resident day, or buy private-land-only deer from July 1 in units that are not 2A, 2B, 2C, 4, or 5A. Exclusive WMA draws are residents only. How you carry it, tag it, and report it
Successful draw applicants get a mailed license/tag combo unless they chose E-Tag. If you picked E-Tag, download the NM E-Tag app each license year, log in while you still have service, and do not log out. After the shot, tap Tag My Animal, then write the E-Tag number, CIN, and date and time of kill on tape or flagging and attach it before you move the deer. Antlered deer also need an antler tag. Public land does not need a second deer license
Gila, Carson, Santa Fe, Lincoln, Cibola, and BLM take the same New Mexico deer hunt code. What they do not take is a private-land-only tag, or a hunt code written for a different GMU. Youth and first-timers
Junior resident deer is the cheaper line for hunters 17 and under on opening day. Mentored-Youth lets an 8- to 17-year-old first-timer buy a game-hunting license before hunter ed and hunt deer, pronghorn, turkey, javelina, or small game under a mentor — not elk. White Sands and Fort Bliss still want a real hunter-ed card at any age.
Common ways this goes wrong
- Waiting until October to buy a public-land deer tag like it was Michigan.
- Clicking License Sales instead of Draw Hunt Applications.
- A private-land-only tag on a Gila two-track.
- Skipping last year’s harvest report and watching every draw application bounce.
- A fourth-choice quadrant you were not actually willing to hunt.
