Updated on September 8, 2026. Confirm every fee, draw deadline, and hunter-education rule on the Nevada Department of Wildlife apply-and-buy hunting page and in the 2026–27 licenses and tag fees before you put a card in. This is the field readout, not the proclamation.

Who this is for Resident and nonresident hunters after Rocky Mountain mule deer in Nevada. There is no white-tailed deer hunt.
Buy it here ndowlicensing.com or a license agent. Support: (855) 542-6369.
Hunter education Required if born after January 1, 1960. Other-state or Canadian-province cards count once they are on the NDOW account. Adults 18+ can finish online; under 18 still need the in-person class.
What you actually buy A hunting or combo license (valid 365 days from purchase) and a mule deer tag if you draw, hit leftover, or buy First-Come, First-Served.
OTC vs draw No walk-up mule deer tag. Main draw, second draw, then leftover / first-come. Mountain lion is the OTC big-game exception. Restricted guided mule deer is a separate earlier nonresident draw with a licensed Nevada guide.
License year 365 days from the day you buy it. 2026 main draw: March 23 – May 13 at 11 p.m. Pacific; results May 29.
Antlerless / bonus Antlerless is its own hunt class when NDOW opens it. You may apply for antlered and antlerless. One deer tag. Bonus points are squared, plus one for the current year.
WMA / public extras No second “WMA license.” Humboldt-Toiyabe and BLM take the same unit tag. Mason Valley WMA: shotgun slug or bow, Saturdays / Sundays / Wednesdays and listed holidays.
Youth / apprentice Big game at 12. Must turn 12 before the opener of any hunt choice. Junior mule deer is resident-only. Apprentice licenses are NDOW-office only and do not skip the deer draw.

Do not book Elko until the tag is real

I have watched people price rooms around a Ruby opener with a Michigan-style plan: buy the tag when you get there. Nevada does not sell mule deer that way. You apply in spring, wait on May 29, and pay in seven days — or the tag goes to an alternate and NDOW still treats you as if you took it. The national walkthrough lives at how to get a hunting license. This page is Nevada’s cart. Seasons and towns sit on the Nevada deer hunting guide. Trip math: planning an out-of-state deer hunt.

Step 1: Hunter education

If you were born after January 1, 1960, Nevada will not sell you a hunting license until hunter education is on the account. That cutoff is on the NDOW hunter education page. An official card from any U.S. state or Canadian province counts. NRA and military certificates do not. First-time tag applicants still have to register the card in the portal. Adults 18 and older can certify online. Under 18, Nevada wants home study plus the in-person class. Course notes: what to expect in hunter education.

Step 2: Resident or not

Residency is not “I have a cabin near Wells.” Under NRS 502.015, a resident has a principal Nevada home, was physically present here for the six months before the application, and did not buy or apply for a resident hunting, fishing, or trapping privilege in another state. A Utah driver’s license with an Elko camp is a nonresident. Full-time college students living in Nevada can qualify if they meet that six-month test — call the regional office before you click it.

Step 3: What goes in the cart

Think in layers. This is not a Midwest stack you grab at a gas station.

  1. Create the NDOW licensing account at ndowlicensing.com and get hunter ed on it.
  2. Hunting or combo license. Valid 365 days from purchase. You can apply without buying one, but you will not earn a bonus point if you fail. One point per hunt category per license year.
  3. Deer application — up to five hunt choices. Use them. The nonrefundable application stack on a regular mule deer app is the posted $10 big-game fee, $3 game-tag fee, and $1 processing fee. Bonus-point-only skips the $3.
  4. The mule deer tag only if you draw, take an alternate, hit the second draw, or buy First-Come, First-Served. Party applications are legal for mule deer; points average and round.

Cost band, last checked September 8, 2026 on NDOW’s apply-and-buy hunting page: resident adult hunting in the high $30s or combo in the $70s, deer tag in the $30s if drawn. Nonresident combo in the $150s, deer tag in the $240s. Restricted guided nonresident deer is posted in the $300s. Confirm the cart.

Step 4: Draw calendar, leftover, first-come

2026 dates from NDOW’s apply-and-buy calendar and the application process page:

Pay in seven days. Miss it and NDOW treats you as if you took the tag while the paper goes to an alternate. There is no waiting period after a mule deer tag. Skip two consecutive open seasons and the points vanish.

What a nonresident can actually get this season

A first-year nonresident with zero points is not buying a Ruby rifle tag at a Wells gas station. Honest paths: apply in the main draw, take a point, sit the second draw, watch FCFS for a nonresident leftover, or apply for the restricted guided hunt in February if you are actually hiring a Nevada master guide. Neighbor carts: Arizona, California, and Colorado. Utah’s hunt story is on the Utah deer hunting guide. None of those papers work on Nevada dirt.

How you carry it, tag it, and report it

Carry the license and the tag. Only the person named on it may possess it — using a buddy’s deer tag is a felony if an animal is down (NAC 502.385). When the deer is down, immediately notch date and antler points with a knife. A pen mark is not a notch. Attach it to the carcass before you reach the truck (NAC 502.390, 502.400). Mechanics: how to tag a deer. The hunt survey questionnaire is mandatory, success or not, by 5 p.m. Pacific January 31 — February 28 if your hunt closed after January 31. Skip it and you owe $50 and you are locked out of the next application period until you file (NAC 502.405). CWD has not been detected in Nevada as of the June 30, 2026 regs page; the Transportation Restriction Zone still has mandatory sampling. Symptoms: CWD in deer.

Public land does not need a second deer license

Humboldt-Toiyabe, BLM sage, and most state wildlife areas take the same unit mule deer tag. A tag written for 101–109 does not unlock a Jarbidge two-track. Great Basin National Park and Death Valley are closed. Mason Valley WMA is the deer exception that changes a weapon: shotgun slug or bow only, and only on Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays, and listed holidays (NAC 503.170). Woods how-to: hunting national forest land and public land deer hunting.

Youth and first-timers

Anyone 12 or older with a hunting license can apply for big game. Youth must turn 12 before the opening of any hunt choice on the application. Junior mule deer is resident-only. New for 2026: one junior tag from the main draw; a second only as alternate, second draw, or leftover. Ages 12–13 hunt with a licensed adult. At 14 they may hunt alone with a valid license and a rifle or shotgun that is not fully automatic (NRS 202.300). The apprentice hunting license is a one-time NDOW-office product for someone who has never held a hunting license. Hunter ed is waived; a mentor must directly supervise (NRS 502.066). It is not a mule deer tag.

FAQ

Can a nonresident buy a Nevada mule deer license over the counter? No. Tags go through the drawing. Leftovers, if any, show up in the second draw and then First-Come, First-Served. Confirm on the NDOW application process page.

Do I need hunter education? If you were born after January 1, 1960, yes, unless you are on an apprentice license under a mentor that day.

Does a Utah or California license work here? No. A Ruby hunt needs a Nevada mule deer tag for that unit group.

Where do I report a deer? Notch the tag in the field. File the hunt survey questionnaire in your NDOW account by the January 31 / February 28 deadline, success or not.
