Buy the tag before you book a camp past Millinocket
I have watched people roll up to a Golden Road checkpoint with a New Hampshire license and a story about “it’s the same White Mountains.” Maine does not care. Step 1: Hunter education
Maine will not sell you an adult firearms hunting license unless you show an approved hunter-safety certificate or proof you already held an adult firearms license in any year beginning with 1976. Archery is its own stack: an adult bow license after 1979, an archery education course, or a Maine crossbow permit held before 2024. A Michigan firearms card is not a Maine archery license. Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is domicile, not a camp in Greenville. IFW wants a U.S. citizen, or a non-citizen domiciled in Maine for one year, plus the usual tests: vote here if you vote, a Maine driver’s license if you drive, Maine plates on vehicles that live here, and you are current on state income tax. A Massachusetts address with a Rangeley camp is a nonresident. Nonresident big game is sold over the counter. A resident of New Brunswick or Quebec who is not a U.S. citizen needs a registered Maine Guide to hunt deer unless they own or lease Maine land, stay current on the taxes, and keep that land open to hunting. Read the waiver PDF on the license page.
Step 3: What goes in the cart
Maine does not sell one object called “a deer license.” Think in layers:
- Big game hunting license — firearms (“Hunt”) or archery. One antlered deer (antlers 3 inches or longer) for the year. Combination hunt/fish is still big game. Small game is not.
- Antlerless deer permit if you want a doe outside the either-sex windows. It is written for a WMD.
- Muzzleloader permit if you are 16 or older and you stay into December. Junior and senior lifetime (70+) already include it. Resident add-on is low-teens; nonresident is high-sixties on the 2026 sheet.
- Expanded archery permits only in mapped suburban and island zones, over the counter: multiple antlerless plus one extra either-sex.
- DMAP only on the property named on the permit, during regular seasons.
Super Pack is resident-only and still requires hunter ed plus the antlerless lottery application. A Maine resident who owns and lives on 10 or more contiguous acres, and their immediate family, may hunt that land without a license.
Step 4: When it goes on sale, and the antlerless clock
Big game is a calendar-year product. You can buy it the week you drive from MOSES, an agent, or Augusta. Not every town clerk sells nonresident licenses. Wait until the Friday before firearms and you will still get a buck tag. What you will not get is a northern WMD antlerless permit that already went to the lottery.
For 2026, lottery applications opened June 25 and closed August 3 at 11:59 p.m. Drawing was August 13. Claim and pay by September 10. Leftovers went on sale September 15, with a second window September 29. No fee to apply. If you are drawn, IFW publishes a $12 permit plus a $2 agent fee. You must already hold a valid Maine big game license; you get two WMD choices. Dates: antlerless deer permit.
How you carry it, tag it, and register it
Keep an electronic or paper copy of the license on you. Maine is still in-person for deer. Before you move the animal, attach a plainly visible tag with your name, address, and license number (transportation tag PDF). Keep the deer open to view. Present it at the first open station on your route within 18 hours, unless you are staying at a temporary camp in an unorganized township — then seven days or until you leave the woods, whichever comes first. Public land does not need a second license — the unit still matters
IFW wildlife management areas, Bureau of Parks and Lands reserved land, and the Maine side of White Mountain National Forest take the same Maine deer license. There is no extra “WMA stamp.” What they do not take is an antlerless permit written for a different WMD. WMA how-to: what is a wildlife management area. Youth and first-timers
Hunters under 16 buy a junior hunting license. It already includes muzzleloader and one expanded-archery antlerless plus one expanded-archery either-sex permit. Youth deer hunt in 2026 is October 23–24.
Apprentice is the adult first-timer path: 16 or older, never held an adult hunting license, no more than five times. Hunt beside a supervisor at least 18 who has held a valid hunting license for the prior three consecutive years. Field side: deer hunting for beginners.
Common ways this goes wrong
- Buying small game and thinking it tags a deer.
- A New Hampshire or Vermont license on the Maine side of the White Mountains.
- An antlerless permit for the wrong WMD, or a doe in a buck-only firearms district without one.
- Taking an either-sex deer on the license in October archery, then expecting a November buck.
- No registration station on the route, and Sunday is closed.
- A New Brunswick or Quebec hunter without a Maine Guide and without the landowner waiver.
