Animals with Antlers vs. Horns: Which Animals Have Which, and Why It Matters

Antlers and horns are completely different structures: antlers are solid bone, grown fresh every year and shed every winter, and they belong only to the deer family — deer, elk, moose, and caribou. Antlers: the fastest-growing bone in the animal kingdom

Every spring, a bull elk or whitetail buck begins growing an entire skeleton’s worth of new bone on his head. Antlers are the fastest-growing bone known — up to about an inch a day at their summer peak — nourished by a furry living skin called velvet that’s warm to the touch and rich with blood vessels. By late summer the bone hardens, the velvet dries and is rubbed off, and the antlers serve through the autumn rut as weapons and advertisements. Only the deer family — about 43 living species of cervids — grows antlers. The size range is spectacular: a bull moose carries palmated antlers spanning up to about 6 feet and weighing 40–60 pounds (the extinct Irish elk reached about 12 feet), while the rabbit-sized pudu of South America makes do with simple 3-inch spikes. Antlers are almost exclusively male equipment, with one famous exception: female caribou and reindeer grow antlers too — which, since males shed theirs by early winter, means Santa’s antlered Christmas reindeer are, by the calendar, almost certainly females.

Horns: built once, kept forever

A horn is a two-part structure: a spike of living bone growing from the skull, wrapped in an ever-thickening sheath of keratin. Nothing about it is disposable. A bighorn ram’s full curl represents a decade of continuous growth, recording annual rings like a tree trunk — biologists age wild sheep by counting the ridges. Because horns are permanent, horned animals tend to use them more cautiously than deer use antlers; a broken horn stays broken for life. Like an antler, part of it branches (the forward “prong”), and the sheath is shed and regrown every single year — the only animal that annually sheds the sheath of a true horn. Why grow a new skeleton every year?

Shedding and regrowing 40 pounds of bone annually looks like evolutionary madness — a bull moose pours minerals equal to a whole second skeleton’s worth of calcium and phosphorus into antlers he’ll drop in December, and bucks measurably deplete their own bones to do it. The payoff is honest advertising. Because antlers restart from zero each spring, this year’s rack reports this year’s health: age, nutrition, and injury show up immediately in the bone, and a doe or a rival reads a big symmetrical rack as proof of a thriving animal, not a lucky inheritance kept from better days. Horns, growing cumulatively, tell a longer, blurrier story. And then there’s the narwhal

One last piece of famous headgear is neither antler nor horn: the narwhal’s “unicorn horn” is actually a tooth — a single spiral canine that erupts through the upper lip and grows up to about 10 feet long, threaded with millions of nerve endings that may sense the water around it. Nature, having invented bone antlers, keratin horns, ossicones, and the pronghorn’s hybrid, apparently couldn’t resist one more approach. It’s a fitting reminder of the rule underneath all the headgear: every spike, curl, and rack is a separate evolutionary experiment in advertising and armament — and the deer family’s disposable, rebuildable version remains the most extravagant experiment of them all.

For wildlife watchers, the antler calendar is worth keeping in your head: bucks and bulls carry hardened antlers from late summer through the winter shed, so an antlered whitetail in June is wearing velvet and an antlered one in March is getting rare.
