Nebraska is not Michigan. Print the tag.
I have watched people treat Nebraska like a Midwestern OTC state because they can still buy a Michigan deer license the Friday before Ironwood. That works if you live here and wait until July 8. It does not work if you want a Sandhills mule deer or a statewide archery card and you skipped June. Print the deer permit. A phone photo of the confirmation email is not the tag.

Step 1: Hunter education
Nebraska does not use a 1960 birth-year cutoff. Ages 12 through 29 need proof while they hunt: firearm hunter education for a gun or air gun, bowhunter education for a bow or crossbow on deer. A Nebraska permit showing the number, a hard card, or a certificate from a recognized state or country all count; a phone display is allowed. Path: NGPC hunter education. Classroom is free, eight hours, 85 percent. Enroll at 11. Ages 16+ can finish online. You do not need the card to apply in June — you need it, or an apprentice exemption, before you hunt. Bring the number. A North Platte vendor will not look up a 1999 Missouri class for you.
The workaround is the Apprentice Hunter Education Exemption Certificate: $5 under “Stamps, Apprentice Certificates, Etc.” It expires Dec. 31 and you may renew it once, the next year only. Hunt with a licensed person 19 or older in unaided visual and verbal contact. That adult may not cover more than two apprentice hunters. If the mentor is 19–29, they need the matching card too.
Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is 30 continuous days in Nebraska with intent to stay. A driver’s license or voter card is what an officer will ask for. School or a military posting out of state still counts if Nebraska is your legal home. Active-duty military and full-time students here for 30 days can qualify. A Sandhills cabin does not. Tests: permit and stamp requirements.

Step 3: What goes in the cart
This is not a Michigan base-plus-deer stack, and a small-game hunt permit does not cover deer.
- Habitat stamp — required unless you are a resident under 16, a qualifying landowner on your own ground, or you hold a 64-and-older veteran or 69-and-older senior hunt permit. Lifetime hunt permits do not cover deer.
- Deer permit — sign it, print it, carry it. Unit Buck Permits in 2026 are Season Choice: archery, the nine-day November firearm season, and December muzzleloader with the legal weapon of that season. Statewide archery and muzzleloader are separate products. Party hunting is illegal. Permits are not transferable or refundable.
- Antlerless add-ons — Season Choice antlerless, and River Antlerless on private land only (Niobrara, Lower Platte, Blue, Lower Missouri). It does not put you on a WMA.
- Landowner deer — qualifying owners and immediate family, listed ground only. No habitat stamp. A recreational lease does not qualify.
Combo hunt/fish packages also skip deer. Do not buy a small-game hunt permit because the cart looks empty.
Step 4: When it goes on sale, and what a first-year nonresident can actually get
All big-game sales start at 10 a.m. Central. For 2026 the application calendar is:
- June 1–12 — draw. Residents may apply only for Platte Any Deer or Frenchman Any Deer, or they buy a preference point. Nonresidents apply for one permit among Sandhills, Upper Platte, Plains, Calamus West, Pine Ridge, Frenchman, Platte, Republican, Buffalo, Loup West, statewide archery, or statewide muzzleloader — or they buy a point.
- July 8 — residents buy OTC and leftover deer permits until quota or the season closes.
- July 22 — nonresidents buy limited leftovers, subject to the cap (statewide nonresident buck quota cut from 10,000 to 9,000 for 2026).
- Aug. 5 — remaining permits, including forfeited draw tags, open to anybody.
Mail apps due 5 p.m. Central the last day; internet 11:59 p.m. A $7 application is not a deer permit. Miss the claim deadline in the results notice and you lose the tag and the points. A first-year nonresident actually gets a point if they missed June, a western unit or statewide archery/muzzleloader if they drew, leftovers July 22 or Aug. 5 if anything remains under the 9,000-buck cap, or River Antlerless / Season Choice antlerless if those are still for sale and the dirt matches. How you carry it, tag it, and report it
Sign the permit before it is valid. After the shot, punch or notch sex and date immediately and keep the canceled permit on the animal, or with you, until check-in. Mechanics: how to tag a deer. Check the deer before it leaves Nebraska, and do not cut it smaller than quarters (four legs with femur or scapula attached, plus the loins) until then. Outside November firearm, Telecheck within 48 hours and before 1 p.m. the day after that season closes. During the nine-day gun season you may use a check station or Telecheck; in by 1 p.m. the day after the close, and you go with the deer. Write the seal number on the permit. Phone: 844-279-4564. Public land does not need a second license — Gifford Point does
Open Fields, most WMAs, Bessey (Halsey), McKelvie, Pine Ridge, and Oglala take the same deer permit and habitat stamp. No extra walk-in stamp. They do not take a River Antlerless tag, or a Pine Ridge unit buck on Box Butte Reservoir WMA — that WMA/SRA is Plains after the 2026 line move. Youth and first-timers
Minimum age 10. Youth 10–15 buy the youth deer permit (either species, either sex on the 2026 fee page). Resident youth under 16 skip the habitat stamp; nonresident youth still buy it. Every deer hunter 15 or younger hunts with a licensed person 19 or older. Do not send them to the other end of the shelterbelt.
Common ways this goes wrong
- Buying only a small-game hunt permit and thinking it covers deer.
- A phone screenshot instead of a printed, signed deer permit.
- Showing up in November as a nonresident without a June application or a leftover tag.
- A Pine Ridge tag on Box Butte, or a River Antlerless tag on a WMA.
- Ages 12–29 with a firearm card and a bow in the stand, or the reverse.
- Cutting the deer into steaks before Telecheck, or hauling a whole CWD-country carcass home.

FAQ
Can a nonresident buy a Nebraska deer license over the counter? Not statewide archery or muzzleloader, and not in June. Those are a June 1–12 draw. Leftovers: July 22 for nonresidents, Aug. 5 for anybody, if quota remains. Confirm units on the big-game permits page.
Do I need hunter education? Ages 12–29, yes, unless you hunt on a valid apprentice exemption with a licensed adult 19+. Firearm ed for a gun; bowhunter ed for a bow or crossbow on deer. Other-state certificates count.
Does an Iowa or Kansas license work in Nebraska? No. Hunter education from those states usually counts. The license does not.
