Buy the tag before you book the motel
I have watched people drive to Bedford with an Illinois license in the console because the Hoosier “looks like Shawnee from the map.” Indiana does not care. You need an Indiana deer license to hang a deer on Indiana dirt, including Hoosier National Forest. A Kentucky or Ohio license does not work one ridge over the line either. Step 1: Hunter education
If you were born after December 31, 1986, Indiana wants a hunter-education certificate before it will sell you a regular hunting license. That cutoff is later than Michigan’s. Classroom courses for residents are listed through DNR hunter education; online is offered for hunters 12 and older at hunter-ed.com/Indiana. If you already passed hunter ed in another state or a Canadian province, bring the card or the Hunter Education Number. Born on or before that date, you are generally exempt from hunter ed. You are not exempt from buying the deer license. Apprentice is the workaround if you have not finished the class yet.
Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is not “I have a cabin near Nashville.” DNR’s test is a true, fixed, permanent home and primary residence in Indiana for 60 consecutive days before you buy, and you cannot also claim hunting residency somewhere else. Nonresident deer licenses are sold over the counter in a normal year. That is why a lot of us hunt Indiana instead of drawing Illinois leftover. On the DNR fee sheet last updated September 4, 2026, resident deer licenses sit in the $24–$91 band; nonresident deer licenses sit at $240 a license or $550 for the bundle. Confirm the current number the week you buy. A nonresident youth 17 or under hunts on a resident-priced license if a parent, grandparent, or legal guardian is an Indiana resident. A hunting lease does not make you a landowner for the farmland exemption — that exemption is for people who farm the ground.
Step 3: What goes in the cart
Indiana is not Michigan. You do not buy a base license and then a deer tag. A general hunting license covers small game. A deer hunting license is what lets you hunt deer:
- Archery license — one deer of either sex in archery season. Crossbows count. You can stack these up to the statewide bag.
- Firearms license — one antlered deer, firearms season only. Not a doe tag. Not valid in muzzleloader season.
- Muzzleloader license — one deer of either sex in muzzleloader season. Not valid in firearms season.
- Multi-season antlerless — one antlerless deer in youth, archery, firearms, or muzzleloader. It does not fill a deer-reduction-zone bag. The first one is full price. The second and later are the discounted SKU — no other deer license type unlocks that discount.
- Deer license bundle — one antlered and two antlerless across youth, archery, firearms, and muzzleloader. It cannot satisfy a DRZ bag.
- Deer reduction zone license — mapped zones only, extra bag, earn-a-buck inside that extra bag. Do not assume the bundle covers it.
- Military/refuge license — only if you drew Camp Atterbury, Crane, Muscatatuck, or Big Oaks. That deer is extra bag. Using a regular deer license on those hunts eats your statewide bag instead.
You are allowed one firearms license, one bundle, up to ten DRZ licenses, and up to six archery, muzzleloader, and multi-season antlerless licenses combined — then county limits of 1, 2, 3, or 4 still cap you inside a county. Step 4: When it goes on sale
The license year starts April 1. If you wait until the Friday before the November firearms opener, you will still get a resident or nonresident deer license in a normal year. The part that disappears is a reserved-hunt slot, a military/refuge draw, or a state-park management hunt. Those applications live on the reserved hunts page.
How you carry it, tag it, and report it
Electronic copies in the GoOutdoorsIN app are legal. I still screenshot the license and keep a paper temporary transportation tag I can fill out with gloves on. Attach that paper if you do not have the carcass in your hands and eyes. The head stays on until you check the deer in. Public land does not need a second deer license
Hoosier National Forest, the south-central state forests, and the Fish & Wildlife areas take the same Indiana deer license. There is no extra Forest Service hunting stamp. Some DFW properties still want a daily self-check or a one-day access permit. Camp Atterbury the installation is not Atterbury FWA. During firearms season you still cannot shoot an antlerless deer with a firearm on Division of Fish & Wildlife properties, Mississinewa Lake, Salamonie Lake, or Patoka Lake. That ban is not a Hoosier rule. Youth and first-timers
The resident youth hunt/trap license covers one antlered, six antlerless, and the DRZ extra bag on a single license for ages 17 and under. Buy it before they turn 18; if they turn 18 after the purchase, it still runs to March 31. A licensed adult 18 or older has to be with them during youth season, free hunting days, and any apprentice hunt. Apprentice licenses skip hunter ed for up to three purchases in a lifetime: close proximity, able to communicate, no more than two apprentices per adult.
Common ways this goes wrong
- Buying a general hunting license and thinking it covers deer.
- Using a firearms license as a doe tag, or carrying it into muzzleloader season.
- An Illinois, Ohio, or Kentucky license on Indiana dirt because “it’s the same woods.”
- Treating the bundle as a deer-reduction-zone license.
- Paying full price for every extra antlerless tag because you never bought the first multi-season antlerless SKU.
- Skipping check-in because you are headed back to Illinois the same night.
