Buy the all-game license before you book the motel
I have watched people drive to Tuscaloosa with a Georgia sportsman’s license in the console. Alabama does not care that you “hunt the border.” You need an Alabama all-game hunting license to hang a deer on Alabama dirt — Black Warrior, Oakmulgee, or a pine stand you paid a club to sit. Alabama does not sell a separate deer stamp the way Michigan layers a deer license on a base. The all-game license is the deer license. Step 1: Hunter education
If you were born on or after August 1, 1977 and you are 16 or older buying a hunting license, Alabama wants an approved hunter-education course first. That cutoff is on the hunting laws page. Sit an in-person class or finish an all-online course listed on the hunter education page, then log into MyOutdoorAlabama and make sure the hunter-safety number actually sits on your profile. The new cart started taking lifetime licenses online in mid-July 2026. I still check that the number migrated.
If you already passed hunter ed in another state, bring the card or the number. Do not assume a vendor can “look you up.” Course notes: what a hunter education course is actually like. Outdoor Alabama lists exemptions for APOST-certified officers employed in the state, active-duty U.S. military, and Alabama residents in the active National Guard. Born before that 1977 date, you are generally exempt from hunter ed — not from buying the license.
Step 2: Resident or not
Residency is not “I have a camp in Jackson County.” Outdoor Alabama starts with your driver’s license, plus 90 days of bona fide residence right before you buy unless you qualify as military stationed here. Two driver’s licenses? You are a nonresident. Details: nonresident requirements. Military stationed 30 days or more, and full-time college students 17–23 at an approved Alabama school who live here, can buy resident licenses.
A first-year nonresident can buy all-game over the counter. Annual is the expensive one — low $400s on the 2026–27 table. The 10-day (mid $250s) and 3-day (high $170s) trip licenses are how I would hunt a long weekend from Illinois. Resident all-game sits in the mid-$30s. Confirm the current band on the official fee table the week you buy. Residents 16 through 64 buy the hunting license. Step 3: What goes in the cart
Think in layers, not “a deer license”:
- All-game hunting license — deer and turkey. This is the product. Digital or paper, it has to be on you.
- Wildlife Management Area license — required to hunt deer, turkey, or waterfowl on a WMA. Low $20s on the 2026–27 table for residents and nonresidents.
- Free AREA permit for that WMA, plus a daily check-in on the Outdoor Alabama app or a paper daily permit at the kiosk. I screenshot all three before I leave cell service.
- Bait privilege license — only for deer or feral swine over bait on private or leased land outside the CWD zone. Required of all ages. No exemptions. High teens resident, mid $60s nonresident. Illegal on public land, including WMAs, SOAs, national forest, refuges, TVA, Corps, and the entire CWD zone.
Small game does not cover deer. A wildlife heritage license does not cover deer. A Georgia or Mississippi license does not cover Alabama. Get a Conservation ID and keep it. Lookup: CID lookup.
Step 4: When it goes on sale
Annual hunting licenses run September 1 through August 31. I buy when I pick the weekend, not the Friday before gun opener. I am not inventing a first-sale date Outdoor Alabama has not posted. An OTC all-game license is still sitting there opening morning in a normal year. What disappears is a Special Opportunity Area draw. Nonresidents who want an SOA limited-quota hunt have to hold a nonresident hunting license and a nonresident WMA license first — that is on the license FAQs. If a hunt is drawn, the AREA permit says so.
How you carry it, tag it, and report it
Paper or digital licenses are both legal if they are in your possession. I still screenshot the PDF. A deer and turkey harvest record — paper or the Outdoor Alabama app — has to be on you. One record, not two. Fill it out before you move the deer or start field dressing. Then Game Check within 48 hours, or before you hand it to a processor, whichever comes first.
Three ways, from Outdoor Alabama: the Outdoor AL app (works offline), game.dcnr.alabama.gov, or phone 1-800-888-7690 with your Conservation ID or license number ready. License-exempt hunters get a free H.E.L.P. number. If you transfer the deer, you owe written paperwork: name, CID, confirmation number, harvest date. Mechanics: how to tag a deer. CWD is not a license, but it will ruin the drive home. The management zone is still Lauderdale, Colbert, and Franklin as of the last check. Whole carcasses do not leave the zone. Public land needs a second license. National forest often does not.
This is the Alabama gotcha people from the Midwest miss. A state WMA is not “just public dirt with your all-game license.” Deer on a WMA needs the WMA license, the AREA permit, and the daily check-in. Youth and first-timers
Youth means under 16. At 16 you buy a hunting license. Under 16 you generally skip the hunting license, but you still Game Check and you still buy the bait privilege if you bait. Get the kid a Conservation ID / H.E.L.P. number before opening weekend. Special youth deer days run just before gun season — dates on the deer hunting page, last checked September 7, 2026. Each youth party (max two) needs a non-hunting, properly licensed adult 21 or older, or the parent. Adults who have not finished hunter ed buy Supervision Required: under normal voice control, not more than 30 feet from a properly licensed hunter 21 or older who is not also Supervision Required.
Common ways this goes wrong
- Buying small game because it was cheaper, then hanging a deer.
- A Georgia or Mississippi license on Alabama dirt because “it’s the same pine.”
- Walking a WMA with only the all-game license — no WMA license, no AREA permit, no check-in.
- Baiting on a WMA, a national forest, or anywhere in the CWD zone.
- Moving the deer before the harvest record is filled out, then Game Checking three days later.
- Hauling a whole CMZ carcass toward Birmingham because the processor is cheaper.
