Buy the Florida pieces before you book the motel

I have watched people roll into Tallahassee with a Georgia license in the console. Florida does not care that you “hunt the line.” You need a Florida hunting license and a Florida deer permit to hang a deer on Florida dirt, including Apalachicola, Ocala, and Blackwater.

The national walkthrough lives at how to get a hunting license. This page is Florida’s cart. Seasons and where to sit are on the Florida deer hunting guide.

Step 1: Hunter safety

If you were born on or after June 1, 1975, Florida wants a hunter-safety certificate before it will sell a hunting license that lets you hunt unsupervised with a gun, muzzleloader, bow, or crossbow. Present the card. If the license does not show you passed, carry the card. Courses: FWC hunter safety. A hunter-safety card from another state is accepted. That is not a hunting license. You still buy Florida’s license and deer permit. Law enforcement and military personnel are not exempt from the course.

Anyone 16 or older, born June 1, 1975 or after, can check the hunter-safety deferral and hunt under a qualified hunter 21 or older who is licensed (or exempt) and has met hunter safety (or is exempt). The license prints that you must hunt under supervision. Details: FWC hunter safety certification deferral. Youth under 16 are license-exempt for ordinary Florida hunts.

Step 2: Resident or not

Residency is not a cabin near Milton. FWC wants Florida as your only state of residence, shown by a Florida driver license or ID with a Florida address verified by DHSMV. Backups if you do not have that card: voter-information card, declaration of domicile, or homestead exemption. Landlord letters are no longer accepted. Active-duty military stationed in Florida, plus spouse and kids in the household, count as residents with orders. Source: Florida residency.

An Alabama or Georgia address with a panhandle camp is a nonresident. Nonresident deer hunting is over the counter in a normal year: hunting license plus deer permit, then extra permits if you need them. Nonresidents do not get the resident Sportsman’s bundle. Confirm the current nonresident cost band on the FWC fee list the week you buy. I am not pasting a number that will be wrong next spring. Also read planning an out-of-state deer hunt.

Step 3: What goes in the cart

Florida does not sell “a deer license.” It sells a hunting license and then stacks permits:

  1. Hunting license — required to take or attempt game. Resident annual, resident five-year, or nonresident annual.
  2. Deer permit — required to take or attempt deer. A few dollars, not the expensive line.
  3. Weapon-season permits — archery, crossbow, and muzzleloading each add a permit if you hunt that season. General gun does not.
  4. Management-area permit — required on WMAs, wildlife and environmental areas, and some public small-game areas. National-forest deer hunts usually sit inside a WMA brochure.
  5. Quota or limited-entry permit — required on named hunts. This is not the deer permit.
  6. WMA deer-dog permit — no-cost, required if you run dogs on the WMA system where the brochure allows it.

Residents who hunt WMAs and more than one weapon season usually buy the Sportsman’s license, which folds in hunting, freshwater fishing, WMA, archery, muzzleloading, crossbow, deer, turkey, and Florida waterfowl permits. It is not a nonresident product.

Cost band, not a scraped table: resident hunting licenses sit in the teens; deer and weapon-season permits are a few dollars each; the WMA permit is in the mid-twenties; Sportsman’s is around eighty. Nonresident hunting licenses sit around one hundred fifty plus the same deer permit. Issuance fees stack on. All sales are final. Read the live numbers on FWC.

Step 4: When it goes on sale

Annual licenses are sold year-round and run 12 months from the start date you pick. Buy the hunting license and deer permit the week before you leave.

Quota is the part with a clock. For 2026–27, FWC ran Phase I for archery, muzzleloading, general-gun, and family quota May 15 through June 15, 2026. Phase II was June 26 through July 6. Leftovers opened July 9 and run until filled. If you are reading this later, do not apply to a closed Phase I. Check leftovers on limited-entry hunts. Unsuccessful Phase I applicants get a preference point for that hunt type. You can also apply for a point only. Special-opportunity hunts are a separate, paid product — confirm those extra fees on FWC.

How you carry it, log it, and report it

Buy at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com, in the Fish|Hunt FL app, at a tax collector or license agent, or by calling 888-HUNT-FLORIDA. I still screenshot the license.

Florida does not use a paper kill tag on an ordinary deer. You log the harvest before you move the deer from the spot you found it, then you report it within 24 hours — or before processing, transfer, or leaving the state, whichever comes first. App, website, or 888-HUNT-FLORIDA. Keep the confirmation number. Kids under 16 and resident hunters 65 and older still log and report. Mechanics: FWC harvest reporting and how to tag a deer.

CWD rules are not a license, but they will wreck the drive home. Confirmed cases have been in Holmes County. The management zone covers parts of Holmes, Jackson, and Washington counties north of I-10. Do not haul a whole carcass out of that zone. Symptoms: CWD in deer. Official: FWC CWD page.

Public land is a permit stack, not a second state

Apalachicola, Blackwater, Ocala, Osceola, Three Lakes, and Big Cypress take the same Florida hunting license and deer permit. What they add is the management-area permit, and on a lot of named hunts a quota permit. Apalachicola is the large walk-on forest. Ocala, Blackwater, and Three Lakes still draw for general gun. Read that year’s WMA brochure the night you apply. A leftover private-land antlerless tag does not let you shoot a doe on a WMA. Baiting, dogs, Sundays, and hunter orange live on the Florida hunting guide.

Youth, seniors, and first-timers

Under 16 does not need a hunting license, deer permit, or WMA permit. They still log and report a deer. Youth deer-hunt weekends let a hunter 15 or younger take one deer (not a spotted fawn) toward their annual bag, with an adult 18 or older supervising. If that adult is hunting, the adult needs the license. Confirm the weekend on the season-dates page.

Resident hunters 65 and older are license-exempt with proof of age and residency, or they can grab the no-cost Resident 65+ Hunt/Fish certificate at GoOutdoorsFlorida. Homestead hunting in your county of residence is another exemption. Live list: do I need a license. Exemptions do not skip harvest reporting.

Where to hunt once the license is in the truck

Start with the Florida deer hunting guide for zones, Sunday hunting, baiting, dogs, and the public-land list. For a woods people skip, look at where to hunt.

Florida is white-tailed deer country. Neighboring calendars: Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. If you also hunt the Upper Midwest, how to get a Michigan deer license is a different machine. Compare states from deer hunting by state.

FAQ

Can a nonresident buy a Florida deer license over the counter? Yes, for private land and for WMA hunts that do not require a quota. Confirm on FWC hunting licenses.

Do I need hunter education? If you were born on or after June 1, 1975 and you are 16 or older, yes, unless you hunt under the mentoring deferral or you are license-exempt. Out-of-state cards count.

Does a Georgia license work in the panhandle? No. Key deer are not legal game either.
