Georgetown Community Raises Concerns Over Potential Deer Trapping Program Resumption
Residents of Sun City Texas in Georgetown have voiced opposition to a proposed white-tailed deer trapping program expected to potentially restart in 2026 after a multi-year pause.
A petition opposing the program is currently being circulated, reigniting community debate similar to concerns expressed in 2021 when the program was previously active.
Community Reactions and Ethical Concerns
Barbara Meisner, a Sun City resident for eight years, described the trapping method as an outdated and inhumane form of wildlife management and advocated for more humane alternatives.
Another local, Laura Dole, recounted the distressing sounds of deer being trapped and loaded onto trailers during the prior program, underscoring the emotional toll on residents.
Details of the Trapping Method and Regulatory Framework
Derrick Wolter from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) explained that local communities can seek special permits for deer population management, including live trapping methods.
The technique involves setting nets a few feet above ground and baiting with corn to lure deer beneath; once the deer trigger the net, it falls and confines the animal.
The trapped deer are then transported to processing facilities where euthanasia is performed, with regulations mandating the donation of meat to charitable organizations.
Population Control Context and Wildlife Management Challenges
Wolter noted that while wild animals historically regulated their populations naturally, changes in landscape and human development have introduced unique challenges requiring intervention.
He pointed out that communities often pursue deer management to mitigate vehicle collisions and damage to residential landscaping caused by deer browsing.
Permit Activity and Community Decision-Making
Since 2011, Williamson and Travis Counties have issued a total of 19 special deer management permits, reflecting ongoing efforts to control local deer populations.
Sun City Wildlife Management Committee held a private town hall meeting to discuss the program’s potential return; however, no public comment was provided by the community association at this time.
An upcoming workshop is scheduled for November 6, 2025, to gather resident input, with a final decision on the trapping program expected on November 20, 2025.
