Side-by-Side Vehicle Collides with Deer Near Leader, Injuring Three
LEADER — On the night of Friday, October 3, a side-by-side vehicle traveling east on 76th Street Southwest in Cass County struck a deer, causing injuries to three individuals. The incident occurred around 11:03 p.m., approximately one mile east of the town of Leader, according to Cass County Sheriff Bryan Welk.
Deputies reported the vehicle was moving at an estimated speed of 35 to 40 miles per hour when a deer suddenly emerged from the roadside ditch. The driver attempted to slow down, but the collision was unavoidable, resulting in loss of control of the vehicle.
Injuries and Emergency Response
- The front passenger, a 53-year-old man from Albert Lee, suffered a severe head injury and was non-responsive at the scene. He was airlifted by North Memorial Health Air Care to CentraCare-St Cloud Hospital for critical treatment.
- The driver, a 21-year-old man from Hayward, and the rear passenger, a 50-year-old man from Motley, sustained minor injuries.
The Motley Fire Department and Staples Ambulance provided on-ground assistance following the crash. Sheriff Welk confirmed that alcohol was not believed to be a contributing factor, and the crash remains under investigation.
Wildlife Context and Considerations
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), common to the Cass County region, are most active during dusk and nighttime, coinciding with this accident’s timing. Their crepuscular activity patterns and tendency to move along roadside corridors increase the risk of vehicle collisions during these hours.
Deer frequently use ditches and brush-covered edges as travel routes, which likely explains the sudden appearance onto the road. At speeds of 35-40 mph, a collision with a deer can cause significant trauma due to the animal’s size, often between 100 to 300 pounds for adults, depending on sex and age.
Such incidents highlight the challenges for both drivers and wildlife in shared habitats, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in areas with high deer populations, especially during peak activity times in fall, which also coincides with the deer breeding season (rut).
