Indiana Implements Revised Deer Hunting Regulations for 2025-2026 Season
INDIANAPOLIS — As the 2025-2026 deer hunting season approaches, Indiana has introduced significant regulatory changes aimed at streamlining the hunting process and providing clearer guidelines for hunters.
“Our primary objective with these updates was to simplify an otherwise complex framework,” explained Joe Caudell, the state’s deer program coordinator with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR). “We reviewed the existing regulations carefully, sought input from the hunting community, and refined the rules accordingly.”
Key Regulation Adjustments
The revised deer hunting rules reflect a balance between sustainable deer population management and improving hunter experience. The main adjustments include:
- Statewide bag limits have been standardized to six antlerless deer and one antlered deer, excluding Deer Reduction Zones and youth seasons.
- County-specific antlerless bag limits now replace the previously established season-long antlerless limits and the county bonus antlerless quotas.
- Firearm hunters are prohibited from harvesting antlerless deer on Indiana DNR Fish & Wildlife properties as well as at Salamonie, Mississinewa, and Patoka lakes.
- The bundle license permits a harvest of one antlered and two antlerless deer.
- Crossbows are now permissible under the archery license, providing greater accessibility during archery seasons.
- The allowable muzzleloader caliber has been reduced from .44 to .40 inches, expanding firearm options for hunters using traditional methods.
- Portable tree stands and ground blinds may be set up on DNR properties within Deer Reduction Zones from noon September 1 until February 8.
- Drones and devices equipped with infrared sensors are authorized solely for locating harvested deer, maintaining a strict prohibition on their use for hunting.
- New state legislation permits rifles with centerfire cartridges having a minimum bullet diameter of 0.219 inches (5.56 mm) or larger for deer hunting on both public and private lands.
Season Dates for 2025-2026
The schedule for the upcoming deer seasons is as follows:
- Deer Reduction Zone: September 15, 2025, through January 31, 2026 (where open)
- Youth Season: September 27-28, 2025
- Archery Season: October 1, 2025, to January 4, 2026
- Firearm Season: November 15 to November 30, 2025
- Muzzleloader Season: December 6 to December 21, 2025

Adjustments to bag limits and hunting equipment are critical tools in managing Indiana’s white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations sustainably.
